      Thx for sharing life’s 🎇 🔗🎆
My big problem with small notebooks is “where did write what”. For me it ended up with 10 different notebooks for different categories….
As a result I went back to big post its where I transfer/put the post it in a bigger notebook.
The results are that I don’t feel limited to small notebook space, and I can be as detailed as I want to be, so I don’t loose the key element.
So basically, I work with post it notes that I put in bigger notebook. Sometimes Its like treasure hunting map…In a good way😊.
      That’s where I feel comfortable.
A big deep note on one page, and the next has a few post it notes with thoughts and ideas

I'm a perfectionist and it took me years to use a notebook without stopping or ripping out paper, because I wasn't satisfied with how it looked. Now I'm two years into journaling and and using pocket notebooks on the go without paying attention to the aesthetic. It was mentally freeing, because perfectionism is one of my weaknesses. Using a notebook as my second brain is helping me overcome my perfectionism, every day a little bit more.

Same here. I have thrown away several notebooks after a dozen or so pages because I made a mistake and couldn’t cope with imperfection. The pressure to make it visually perfect became overwhelming and so I gave up. Willing to try again with a smaller pocket book as opposed to the forty dollar giant ones. Wish me luck, lol.

I was a heroin addict for almost two decades, ended up on the street going through awful shit like getting stabbed one night. Slept on the sidewalk in the rain (Seattle area, it's cold up here) and ate out of dumpsters. I was out there for almost three years.
I've now been clean for 3 and a half years. Rebuilt my life completely. I tell EVERYONE that the two things that helped me stay on track are: exercising regularly for the massive mental health benefit mainly AND writing down all the things I'm going to do with check boxes next to it. That way I don't get stuck over thinking what I'm going to do because I have already decided. I just DO what's on that list. Next project is starting a Photography and Videography business. I have slowly accumulated the gear while working full time in a factory doing metal fabrication, while also learning Davinci Resolve. I got three cameras (R5 is my main) plus a GoPro, nice tripod and some lights. Need more lights BUT I'm getting close. I've already had one business (SEO/Web Design, which is related to my old career) that made money, but I hated it. Stopped doing it. I've decided to go all in on this and am totally driven about doing something for the first time in my life. I'm lucky to have some business experience with things like sales, marketing and social media advertising and with all the knowledge I have now, it's finally time to turn my passion into my living.
It sounds too easy but exercise plus writing down and tracking my goals/projects daily really did help me turn my entire life around.

Thank you for sharing your experience and how writing in a notebook and exercising had changed your life. I noted that just doing those two things consistently and routinely create an anchor. The routine becomes a comfort to keep coming back to. I liked what you said about drawing checkboxes and all you have to do is to go down the list.
I know for me every morning I writing out my plans and also write my feelings, thoughts on what happened the day before. I don’t feel overwhelmed like I use to.

It is so great to know that one of my role models goes through all the same things, the distractions, the constant "squirrel-ness," doing the un-necessary filler tasks, etc. as I go through on an every day basis.

I've started carrying a pocket notebook and journaling and exploring the ideas of "common place books" and compendiums. I have to say, it's been VERY refreshing to know that at any time I can stop, slow down, and just write something down in my notebook. I did struggle with the whole "what notebook should I buy, what should I write in this one, vs that one, etc" and some of the best advice for that, is the best notebook for you to use is the one you have right now. Start with something cheap from walmart or the dollar store, just to start somewhere. And then eventually get in to something like Field Notes, Moleskin, Totebook, Leuchtturm, etc.
As a society I feel like we are starting to really yearn and crave that "slow down". Life has been happening so fast and we are constantly bombarded with ads, videos, news, whatever it may be, that we are desperate for an outlet to just slow down and be meaningful. Notebooks are a great avenue for that.
Someone also said, journaling and notebooks are cheaper than therapy lol. Not dogging on therapy, but I know at least for me, writing out thoughts, feelings, and emotions has helped me process some of them as you put them pen to paper.

I can attest to the benefits of keeping a notebook. My personal notebook is a bit larger. I use an A5 Dotted Leuchtturm. The dotted journal actually opens up my creativity because the lines do not hinder my perspective. Some pages are artistic quotes I create, others are notes from lectures and sermons, and each week and month have their own page simply planning my schedule. One thing I have been doing for several years is keeping track of all the books I read during the time I am using that personal notebook. So glad you shared this on the channel! Really hope it helps people who have never considered it. Also nice to meet Zac on here. Not sure I could go without my cell phone but man it would be nice.

Great video!!! I worked in fashion industry for about 10 years of my life. During college I remembered that one of the tasks was to have a notebook and write/draw anything on it. It didn't have to be exactly relate to clothes, it could be an idea for a product campaign, a picture, a background that you saw and you liked it. It really makes a whole difference because as you said Peter, I'm also struggling to create because I have 10 others things to do exactly at the same time. This keeps you focus on what you are doing and you won't forget an idea if you write it down. Also, I have a to do list everyday so I know what I should be doing. Love your work Peter.

In 1992 Julia Cameron published a book called the Artist’s Way which has similar goals to the ones you describe in this video. The book has some basic principles but ultimately it’s meant to encourage creatives to write down their ideas, feelings ,goals etc. and to get into the practice to write every morning when you get up. It’s meant to help you get in touch with your creativity. It’s a great practice whether you do it first thing in the morning or at another time during the day, whether you combine writing and sketching … whatever you choose… it’s amazing what you can get accomplished too when you write stuff down

Wow. Listening to you describe feeling stoked on an idea one day, but doing 3 other things before doing it, so by the time you get to the amazing idea the next day, you're no longer stoked on it so don't do it ... one of the most relatable things I've ever heard someone say on UA-cam, or in life! And it's something I'm re-struggling with (re-struggling?) the last few months with reaching the 1 year milestone of going full time in starting my own business, but being far too familiar with the snowball effect you described that keeps happening! Seems like you are, despite your large amount of followers, a very down to earth guy. Surprisingly and cool to see.
Plus you seem cool about pulling others into your videos.
Happy I found you and happier still that you found a way to still the chaotic mind.
Must admit, as a creative… I seem unable to give direction to my life…. Either I lack the money, the self- confidence, the knowledge, the support, the trust or mental peace to get any place.
Love your friend Zach too by the way.
I feel we all need friends like you guys. Not in a creepy way, though is it even possible for a 50- year old woman to creep out people? That in itself suddenly seemed creepy, lovely….
Great vibes, great content and great community.
    Have a great day everyone….:).

Yes! Thank you for confirming my thoughts on digital note taking! I recently decided I'm totally done with trying to use digital calendars to keep myself organized. There's something so refreshing about putting it on paper and decorating the page with little doodles. Shayda Campbell has some wonderful journal drawing tutorials that I used to watch all the time. Then I decided to try a digital calendar thinking it would be more versatile. Technology is out of control. It's getting so overblown and overly complicated. I'm not a programmer and I don't want to take a 6 month course to learn how to use an app. Paper and pencil keeps my information where I want it, keeps my data safe and I feel so much better now! I didn't realize that tech was stressing me out so much!

I've always wanted to write a blog and I did try couple of times but I successfully talked myself out of it because of so many other things. Your words sound so familiar. Today tho before I evev seen your video I was wondering how could I pass on some of my wisdom to my two little doughters. And yet again the thought of blogging came back to my mind and a very clear concept of what is it going to be about. Your video just made me go and bought a domain on squarespace and right now I'm sitting writting down in my little notebook about my next steps. Thank you Peter. Keep inspiring us all 😊and all the best in 2024 🎉

A few months ago I picked my gratitude journal back up and have stayed at it. It’s really been good for me.
One of the things I love about that particular journal is that it has simple prompts, and little space so I find it easy to keep the habit everyday because I can always carve out 5 minutes in the morning and 5 at night.
Open-ended journaling has been beneficial for me in the past, but I find it harder to keep up with due to the lack of constraints.
What constraints or prompts do you use with a blank journal to keep you on track?

So true Peter, I started using a small notebook with me every day and taking some notes in it. Movie ideas, shots to do, things to shop, measurements I must remember when I go to the hard ware store.
You’re so right in what you say, a pen and paper is relaxing and peaceful in some strange way.
I thought I was alone in this modern world to carry around a pen and paper.
Thanks for the inspiration in all you do. ❤

Only through this video, I realised that I have exactly the same issue.. the many fireworks that just keep going off in my head. No wonder I am always so mentally tired but unproductive in real life. You have aptly described what goes on in my head all the time. I may be teaching in the class and then I will have ideas flying off on the next craft project that I need to do (which has no relevance to the Math class I am having at that moment). And, I have the WIP on my table which I needed to complete but I moved on to something else because I wanted to try out the idea that popped into my head. Or when I was working on my project and suddenly decided that I needed to prepare a teaching slide for my English class the next day so that the pupils know what are verbs. So, I should really start a notebook. Thanks for showing me what my brains are up to. :)

I can't love this video enough.. I feel like the words you used to describe the way your brain works is very similar to me and I've never been able to find the words to explain it myself!! Thanks so much!! I've tried notebooks, but I fall out of the habit after a few days because my brain is like.. NOW NOW NOW go do "this" new thing.

This was the most helpful video I have seen on the topic of 'writing it down'. And you explained my problem thoroughly. It took me two days to watch this, since I had the idea to make a leather cover for my field notes that I hadn't bought yet, but had to stop to make a leather bag for my new LED light, which had to wait because I needed to get colored pencil lead for my mechanical pencil that was going into my new field notes cover, along with the 6" steel ruler that I already have but needed to find (for dimensions, of course)....

It's been roughly two years since I've carried a Field Notes notebook. I recall how daily writing and sketching would help me better understand my creative process and how to build upon it. The part about slowing things down hits home and reminds me to let the inner voice, imagination, thoughts, and feelings pour onto paper wherever and whenever. Thanks for sharing your uplifting experience.

It’s been shown that in an educational setting students who wrote their notes out vs students who used a computer or something digital, the students who wrote their notes were better able to grasp and keep the information. And you talking about the grand finale way of thinking is a wonderful way of putting things like that out and helping others, myself included, with ways to help calm the mind. A lot of days that is a very hard thing to do and anything helps.

Writing things down changed everything. It helped me 4x my business, but I do it mostly on a digital notebook as I cannot keep track of my physical note books and the clutter drives me nuts. I use Supernote, and it gives the tactile feel with the ability to organize however I want with multiple notes books for everything all at my finger tips.

There's something you do in these videos which I am sure is intentional, and I guess in the grand scheme of youtube as a platform it's nothing hugely special. But the fact that you look straight at the camera, and therefore, into my eyes, into everyones eyes, just gives me strength. Seeing someone do the thing I want to be doing, while also seeing that they struggle too, gives me strength. It makes this dream feel real. Thank you

Agreed! It's super annoying watching videos from lesser creators, when they stare at the flip out screen of the camera, which is positioned off the the side. I don't get engaged as much, because it feels like they are talking to the camera and not to the viewer.

Coz it got too noisy inside my head and my work flow started going down hill which i ended up loosing a lot of missed opportunities. But after watching this... This might... No. Will be the time i get back onto that creative workflow and jott down every inspiration that hits me. And maybe... Just maybe.. I'll have my own UA-cam channel and platform. 😊

I keep lined Moleskine pocketbooks for songwriting. I have one that has staff paper for melodies. It feels good having something physical to look back at and share. I might grab a couple packs of field notes, I've always wanted to learn to sketch with a pencil/charcoal.

  • @disposablepal

i remember the first video when you mentioned a pocket notebook. i went out and got a field notes and started making a daily to-do list and it changed my life. i still do it daily, but i learned to pace myself. my daily goals range from big projects to tiny tasks like returning an email i've been meaning to get to.
these days i've been using a Traveler's Company passport notebook, its super customizable and allows me the freedom to have my to-do lists, but also have space for random thoughts and notes, as well as a spot for doodles and sketches. i have adhd and if it doesn't get written down, i wont remember it, but also if i try to do it on my phone i get distracted. there's something incredibly satisfying about grabbing a pen/pencil and just dumping whats in your head onto paper in a way only you can understand later

I remember my father taking down notes on these small notebooks and later on making an Excel sheet or writing down something on MS Word. But his first preference was always a small field notebook which he always carried. Interestingly he never carried a purse and he had amazing handwriting which I don't have. This video sparked something in me as my father is no longer with me. Miss dad. Now i realize that the notebook that we carried was actually so cool!!

I have notebooks and daily logs & phone logs from my voice recorder from years and yrs ago and then my mobile iphone changed everything..
I still write some things down.. But know I need to do this daily and make a habit of it again.. Your friend made some incredible concrete facts clear that all those platforms we use are owned by them... Not us! Such an ahh haa moment... Need to get my best photo images in print in albums & on walls..
I've had 25 yrs of printed images and my photography business in albums.. Now online, which has been very challenging with crappie wifi at home, that Century Link finally is figuring out.... It makes for sharing my images challenging at times.. Love having my Deb Ritch Photography website, and Social Media, just trying to make more consistent posts and sharing.. Thanks for your encouraging posts and ideas! You Rock, Peter M... ❤️Deb 🤠📷🐴
