- This video was made with the xtreme 2 on the orginal firmware 1.2. The xtreme 2 now has 30 watts on battery not 20 watts as was the case on this firmware.
The JBL Xtreme 2 is 20 watts on battery power. The JBL Charge 3 is 20 watts on battery power too. How do they sound at maximum when they are both playing at 20 watts power. Also to reach the full potencial of the JBL Xtreme 2 speak it must be charging. The raw sound without charging the JBL Xtreme 2 isn't 40watts ( it's between 30 and 35watts ). From what I can tell you x2 JBL Charge 3 are not better or louder than the JBL Xtreme 2.
For everyone else who doesn't know and own a JBL Xtreme 2 to boost the volume with around 5-10watts you must play music while charging the speaker ( and let's not forget about the bass boost mode by holding the bluetooth button and the volume down button for 10 seconds ) that's how you activate the bass boost mode and if you want to turn it off you do the same thing as you did to turn it on. For those who own Xtreme 2 and watching this video don't worry friends Xtreme 2 is better than 2 JBL Change 3's.

For anyone else not wanting to brick their xtreme 2, so called bass boost mode is actually a service mode that removes bass limiter. This increases distortion pass the designed threshold leaving the drivers susceptible to damage. You're welcome 😜

Nice review Sir, I have had charge 3, and got x1 today for outdoors, as charge 3 wasnt loud enough for that. So now I can use both outdoors and get 50w on battery :)

I really like deep bass, and although my charge 3 goes deeper than my Bose Color 2, I often felt like its wasnt enough. I really don't mind the size and weight (it's still way lighter than my 8L water bottles lmao), I'll pair the charge 3 and the Xtreme 2 to compensate the lack of mids on the Xtreme 2. I also have two friends with a charge 3 each so it's going to be great for parties ! Just waiting JBL to put 5.0 sound alongside the stereo mode (I know that won't happen but it'd be awesome).

thanks for the comments :) yes the x2 does sound good with the charge 3, it was like they were made to be paired. if they just gave the ability to use the x2 as a sub that would also be awesome :) I was playing the x2 along with the pair of c3s and it was really a nice listen. Next video will be comparing ac and battery modes between the x1 and x2. Heads up, on ac there is almost no difference in loudness between the x1 and x2.
Oh yeah, that was also a topic I was curious about. The ac volume difference makes sense since they're both 40W, i'm still interested about how their frequency response compare on AC mode at max volume . You answer comments pretty fast, Thanks about that !

if you are just interested in bass and have no problems playing loud, then sure, bu they are not comparable in terms of size or sound.

but they are all such different speakers. what are you looking for? the boombox of course has best bass, xtreme 2 good all rounder, the charge 3 mids focused. the charge 3 not so great outdoors but better for lower level listening indoors.
Xtreme 2 sounds much better than the Charge 3 (even when 2 Charge 3 are involved). Quality vs quantity.. I choose quality if the price is reasonable.

This is why i'm not gonna purchase the jbl extreme 2, it's not a outdoor speaker anymore, which is very sad. If i want a indoor speaker i would get a whole sound system that's the same price.

i would say yes.
The Xtreme really seems like a flop. I don't get why they didn't improve the battery life and gave it a higher power output.
The charge 3 battery has 22.2 waH, and the Xtreme has 37 waH. Not sure what caused you to think they were the same, but they are very different and both are capable of delivering enough power to the speakers.
I didn't say they were the same, i said they were both rated at 20 watts output on battery only power. This was before the firmware update of course.
@@alanrossreviews Where does it say this? When I read the specs it says that the charge has 2 ten Watt speakers, and the Xtreme has 2 twenty Watt speakers. That means 20 for the Charge and 40 for the Xtreme. The volume reflects these specs, if the wattage was the same, the Xtreme would sound crackly because its larger speakers would not have enough power
@@zekehowey first I don't know where you get the idea that there is a straight relationship between size of driver and power handling. While of course there is a relationship it is far more complicated than your understanding. Not least throw, sensitivity and several physical characteristics. Even a basic knowledge of how volume works would show you that the small power draw at minimum volume does not result in crackles and a problem driving these drivers. As for the actual maximum power draw of these two speakers, they were both published in the official specs. This was when the x2 launched. Jbl actually wrote on the specs page 40w on ac and 20 watts on battery. This was easily confirmed by comparing volume levels with x1 which is 40w ac and 30w battery. As mentioned since this video jbl Updated the x2 to the same 40/30 of the x1 and removed the old specs from their website. Thanks.

yes if you have installed the charge 3 update to get it to connect plus then it works with the xtreme 2. well best speaker is all about taste, use and requirements so very hard to say. there is a big choice :) personally i really like the beolit 17 but its a bit over your budget. biggest bargain is a pair of anker motion+ speakers with custom eq. also consider a minirig setup 2.1 or 2.2.

I just got the Charge 3 this week during sale, however I'm thinking of upgrading to Xtreme 2. Do you think it's worth upgrading? I rarely use speakers outdoors and I'm quite happy when I put my Charge 3 under the table and upped the highs a little bit on the EQ settings on my phone. Thank you so much!
i would look at the motion+, sony xb30 or sony xb40 rather than the xtreme 2. they are different beasts entirely.

oh btw, i have to point out this was before the firmware update so extreme 2 now goes a bit louder on battery.
When I connect the Xteme2 and the Charge 3, nothing happens when I switch between Party or stereo mode. Switching left and right does also not work. Latest firmware on both.
Is there a problem with compatibility?

ive now done against the charge 3.
Simple math might help you out. One larger is always better than 2 smaller of stereo isn't a concern.
charge 3 is larger than flip 4, they both go around same volume depending on type of track played. Simple maths fail.
Alan Ross Reviews that is technically inaccurate. I care about hardware measurements not opinions solely based on you ears.
The bass in charge 3 is so much lower than flip 4 it escapes me how someone would even attempt to compare these two. Not to mention the other features, battery, floats, and will be more durable from nicer passive radiators and stronger drivers.
thats weird because i didnt give you my opinion. You have missed every point i made so im not sure if there is any point in going on. I did try and point out you can get bigger sound in a smaller box and its not the size of the box that is the issue its the quality of components, read again what i said. You then confirm to me that you are trolling by saying the charge 3 is so much lower in bass when its a fact it goes deeper in the bass. Perhaps you refer to the boosted bass on the flip giving higher peaks but this does not amount to so much more bass. This amounts to so much more dsp boost to give it punch.

I've got a question but it's not related to a video... Hope I will get an answer :) Is Casper still Your favorite mattress. Im on the hunt for a new mattress preferably orthopedic as I got problem with my back and my all foam mattress developed a dip after 3y which is not bad as it was bit over £100. Would rather stay away from memory foam on top as I'm waking up in the morning with my t-shirt wet. I sleep on my back mostly but like to turn to sides aswell. There was a good deal for Eve on Amazon 2 days ago for £387 but I dont think it was 2018 model and I'm not sure how return policy works with Amazon. Purple is the mattress I would go for but sadly they do not sell in UK so will go with Casper probably.
yes i sleep on casper but i do use a memory foam topper, however even without a topper casper would be my best option. But its very personal. The good thing about casper is it is the middle ground for firmness so it will tell you which ones would be more suitable even if you dont get on with it. Great news that a mattress man is watching my speaker reviews :) well in hope you was anyway!

Could you do such test with low frequency mode enabled on all of them? Not on high volumes, as it can damage speakers because it lacks limiter, but it offers deeper bass and sounds overall flatter in my opinion.

Isn't this fixable by a software update? Unless they have messed something up about the battery and it will be depleted very fast if it's on 40 watts.
i think you hit the nail on the head, the battery simply wouldn't cope at 37 watt hours capacity. They needed a bigger battery.

HOW EVA!! now in 2022? we use the charge4 with the extreme2!! okay sound or we buy a motion boom or a tribit blast!! and save money...... and get some deep bass....top of the day to ya!!

I'm really struggling between the xtreme 2 and the xtreme, is the 10W difference on battery power really that noticeable? Because I am going to use the speaker outdoors, but probably never at maximum volume and while I'm indoor I can just plug the xtreme 2 in, which means it will only be a "problem" outdoors. So how big is this problem, I really like the better sound quality from the Xtreme 2, but with the price difference and the 10W it has lost, I am not sure anymore if I will buy the Xtreme 2 even though I will mainly use it as an indoor speaker...what would you buy?
if you dont listen at max then its not an issue. the difference is noticeable yes if at max. but also the xtreme 1 has more upper bass boost which travels more outdoors. i would say at this point its xtreme 1 as the better option for outdoors.

Hi, I have a JBL Charge 3 and a Flip 4. Both of them sound great in bluetooth mode, but whenever i plug them in via aux cable, the sound quality worsens and a get a constant buzz going through the music. I tried different aux cords, and different sources such as my phone, my pc soundcard, and a dac/amp that I have, and all of them have the same issue. Anybody else have this? Any ideas what to do?
What a big failure Jbl has done... 20 Watts on battery. Is the Xtreme 2 as loud as the Xtreme on AC?

Just returned my Xtreme1 since it was not connect+ compatible (we have a Charge3 and a pair of Flip4 units). The Xtreme1 was great outside, but way too boomy for indoors. Although it could be managed with a equalizer in Spotify, or other tools. However, I am not sure we will replace the Xtreme1 with an Xtreme2 unless the latest software update really pushes some volume changes. JBL stated they would not be able to update the Xtreme1 to connect+ based on the bluetooth hardware used.
the xtreme 2 goes as loud as the xtreme 1 now with the last firmware update. Not as loud on the peaks but louder overall because of stronger mids.
That is what I am finding out as well, but I agree with your video - is it really worth the extra cost as compared to adding another Charge3? Once the Xtreme2 starts to dip down under $300 somewhat, maybe so. I am going to ride it out, while monitor pricing. Thanks again for all of your videos!!

I may keep my Xtreme now. Ordered the X2 to pair with my "updated" Charge 3's (same colors as yours) since it won't work with the Xtreme. Xtreme does sound great outdoors with some music.
ah! the x2 does sound good with the charge 3 though. The c3 fills in the lost mids of the x2 somewhat.

that is correct, on main power you get 40 watts and on battery 20 watts.
I can tell nearly no difference between battery and a.c.
the difference is there but people think twice the power means twice as loud when reality is it means 30% louder.

Jbl xtreme have 20×2 watt speakers and jbl charge 3 have 10×2watt speakers (there is written on the original jbl site.)
thats on ac power, on battery its 30 watts. 2x15 watts for extreme 2 on battery. 2x 20 watts on ac plug in power.

I have got into some deep base instrumental stuff and the Battery could not handle it. Kept Dropping volume quickly - even though the deep base was pleasing .
I was listing also listening to a mates B&O S3 that he picked up on sale and realised how much more the mids were present with equal lower base . As you know Mids are slightly missing on the Beolit but I only realised when comparing . The vocals are clear on the Beolit which I love but they seem thinner when comparison .
Is the xtreme 2 worth a trial? The low base sounds fun . Vocals ok ?

hasnt really opened up, ive just been listening to a bigger variety of tracks. Also a:b with the my other speakers shows me more of the good side of the xtreme 2. It still is a very narrow sound if you stand off from it but the vocals do stand out yes, it has that strong 2-5khz range. The main thing though is low volume listening, you still get a strong bass and forward vocal at low volume, its still a nice listen. But 20 watts on battery???? what was they thinking. It does lack nice mids. Coming straight from the 17 not sure what you will make of it, the 17 sounder fuller and wider even though as you say the 17 wasnt best for mids but you could push it with the app. I would say its worth a try given the jbl return policy and if you do a fair amount of low volume listening where the 17 was basically unlistenable. Vocals do stand out, a little un-natural but enjoyable.

I tried the app on the Beolit to push mids but then it went warmer with less high end . I could not get it right .
More often than not i’m Listening under half volume . I never play a speaker at full volume

oh yeah im sure thats why they did it, but making the xtreme bigger but not upping the battery capacity so they could keep it to say 30 watts? yeah damn neighbours, life would be easier with them :) if thats the case you may like the xtreme but as you know i have not heard all the alternatives which oluv was talking about. If i stand off say 8 feet, im struck by how narrow the soundstage is when i a:b with the x1, if you are closer its not too bad, im sure better than the oslo. Anyway i wasnt too impressed on a quick listen but after going and forth witrh the charge 3 which i use mostly i did enjoy the x2 more, but at a price :)

yup! stereo kicks x2 ass but it cant match the x2 bass at higher volumes.
2x charge 3 is much better for more clear sound u can use equlizer with 2 speakers u get more dynamic. A equilizer can very good improve sound so thats why charge 4 is not better then 3. Most time i use the preset Rock that improve mid high range and bass Test it with this sounds charge much better
just the fact that the Jbl Xtreme 2 is softer is really a dealbreaker. A sony xb30 for example is even louder (while sounding ofcourse worse) and we live in 2018 so it should be as loud as the first Xtreme.
well i cant disagree with you, it is a puzzle why they have done this. As i said in the unboxing, it seems a rushed product.
i agree. They could've made the Xtreme 2 a lot better and just as loud as the old one if they tried harder. I think they should've skipped the jbl Boombox wich sounds just awfull in my opinion because of this harsh treble and no mids. The Xtreme 2 is almost perfect but it lacks loudness wich is just too bad. This really could've been a great speaker a possible the best in it's class.
i do think the mids on the extreme 2 are too lean and recessed, you have to pair it with certain types of music imho. I couldnt listen to a lot of 60s stuff on it. Im not knocking it, i like it for what it is, but i dont think its anywhere near perfect, maybe it could have been and i will try eq'ing to see just what it can really do.

its a hard decision, its either 2 charge 3s or one xtreme 2. But then the xtreme 1 is better outdoors and half the price :( Personally i like that the xtreme 2 can play low volume but still has a nice decent bass, good if neighbours are a problem. However it a lot of money for what it is.

I imagine all of jbl speakers reduce the watts to conserve power which is the way I prefer it for longer battery life when I don't notice a volume difference. I have an xtreme1 and flip 3. The charge 3 doesnt sound as good so I would still rather have 1 xtreme than 2 charges

Both have a 10,000mah battery. The xtreme defective battery issues were early on. My xtreme is newer and has always worked fine so they must have fixed it rather than recalling the product like beats did with the pill XL

Watts and loudness are different things. Over powering a small speaker is less efficient than using the same watts in a larger speaker.
watts and loudness not being the same thing is hardly headline news. However 0 watts does equal 0 loudness. While your example is true it has an inherent implication that is untrue, that being that having the same watts in a larger speaker than you might have in a smaller speaker means the small speaker is over powered. Over powered of course is a whole subject on its own however its fully possible to have a big and small speaker with the same power and both sound fine, of course a larger box offers other benefits but doesnt mean a small speaker will sound distorted or inferior. You are dealing with a whole sound chain including drivers and amp and the efficiency and throw having a huge impact way more than size of the box.

Larger driver of same basic quality as Jbl uses similar quality across the board, same size spacing between basket and voice coil, same or similar to-scale sized and strength magnet. With these we know that a max power has little to do with actual output. The charge 3 has 90 db@20 watts, the Boombox has 106 db. @xx watts (unknown value as the volume boost truck is applied to get that sound level for the Boombox, which likely reduces the limiter to 40 watts and is closer to 60 watts) but probably about 45 watts or so.
Once you know that db is not linear, and that you need twice the wattage to get 10% more sound, you'll understand, it takes 4 charge 3s to reach 106 db to equal the single boombox.
1, 20 watts, =90 db, 2 40 watts = 99 db, 3 60 watts = 104 db, 4 80 watts =106.
Double the watts does not double the loudness, even with the same exact speaker. This is why size matters with this kind of equipment. Larger speaker, larger box is more sound.
Also amplifiers do not affect the transducer ability. Amplifiers store and replace/modify electrical current, they do not enhance loudness to watts ratio. The can only increase max watts, while rms watts doesnt budge.

you totally missed my point, you started talking generalities which i pointed made its own assumptions that are not true. Then talked specifically about the charge 3 and boombox. not sure how we lost your actual opening line again that watts and loudness are not the same which again i have no idea why you thought this was news? the charge 3 is not over powered, there are more things at play than power. you can have more power and a smaller unit with no problems, its the whole chain that makes the sum. If you stick to the charge 3 it can be made to play fine with better amps and drivers with longer throw.

but, seeing as how we got here, the point, is that the charge 3, which I got right here in front of me, is pushing too many watts into it's speakers and does not need to do that. Most music with very high dynamic range (sad trap, opera, heavy metal, etc. ) is not helped by this watts as the bass will not stand out.
I dont think JBL made too many mistakes with the charge 3, but it is completely inferior to the extreme 2 in every way. The rich mids may be there but that's a sorry thread of an excuse to use.

There's not enough rich bass on JBL Bluetooth speakers to really FEEL music, the bass is present but you're listening to music not quite feeling it
you have to remember these are portable speakers at maximum volume where ass is reduced because of distortion. You can do better and you can do worse but you must have reasonable expectations of what a speaker this size can do.

Alan Ross Reviews sure the Aiwa is large and no its not waterproof and no it wouldn’t fit in a back pack but you could easily put it in your car and perhaps use the Aiwa carrying case to take it to a picnic or whatever, for its $300 price its sound is unmatched. And I would argue that the xtreme 2 is a bit large for some backpacks aswell.
my point is you can name dozens or products that will sound better but with portable bluetooth speakers you are judging the package. imho there is no comparison between the products other than price. For you clearly you would rather have the aiwa, if you can handle the size there is no comparison, clearly. Thats fine but one is not a replacement for the other.

since the charge 3 has set the eqalizer to play quite loud, it is not about woofer but about the size of the speaker and the speaker diameter, but xtreme 2 and less than 20 w. when we added the xtreme 2 menus on charge 3, they did not move so much like at xtreme 2

for real world use and all round use, yes, my charge 3s never let me down. Flip 4 has worn off me a little. But i loved my beolit 17 and now my minirig 2.2 is maybe my most all round enjoyable for pure musical ability. Really depends but the minirig im currently loving. Actually just finnished my video on it. But of course its mega money for full system so i would say charge 3 is still best value to me.
