How to Recover a Chair Seat -- Easy to Fold Corners
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 лип 2024
- I recovered the seat cushions of my 6 dining chairs using faux leather. We brought the table and chair set for the looks and Ikea didn’t have the seat color nor the fabric type we wanted so I recovered the seats myself.
The fabric on my seat cushions was white. Well after just one meal my kids they had them stained with spaghetti sauce. White fabric on seat cushions is so impractical especially with kids. I no longer need to worry about stains as food wipes right off the faux leather.
In this video I show you how to reupholster a dining chair seat cushion. I show how easy it is to fold the corners to make the job look great. This is an easy task that requires some basic tools. The tools I used are pictured in the video.
If you recover your seat cushions please let me know how you made out in the comments below.

The way you did the corners was so very helpful. It was the one thing I was scared of, but you took that fear away. Thank You
You are so welcome! How did your chairs turn out?
Will be covering my chair soon. Excellent video brief concise to the point yet covered all all topics needed.
Thank you for the wonderful review. Good luck with your chair.
A great to the point video. I think I knew what I needed to do but was overthinking again. You gave me the confidence to put things in motion and I thank you!
This is why I make videos. To help people do things themselves. I appreciate your comments
Excellent seat cushion corner advice. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
This is exactly what I needed to see! Thanks a bunch!!!
Glad I could help you figure out the corners.
good job ...just that little extra info we needed. Thanks
Awesome. I'm glad you found my video helpful.
Answered my question as soon as you did the first corner! Thanks!!!
Great! Glad my video helped you with folding the corners.
Great video the folding is probably the hardest part and suggesting leather is a great idea because it's easy to clean thank you!!
you're welcome. I used faux leather as it cost less.
Very helpful! We are recovering ikea chairs with red covers that dont match the new dining room they are going to. This was very helpful as other videos were a little too particular. Thanks for this!
Glad it was helpful!
Job well done I agree with you sofa is not sensible in white but you knew what your doing great video 👍
Yes! Thank you!
Beautiful work 👍
Thank you!!!
Gorgeous
thanks
This is what I was doing, but wasn't sure if I should cut the corners before or after and you didn't cut and it looks great! Thanks!
Glad to I helped you do it yourself.
You lay both sides down and you split the angle and staple along that angle, then you cut along those staples, repeat this process on the other side making you sure you leave about a 3/16" gap between the two rows of staples and cut that edge. At this point you will have two parallel staple lines splitting the difference of the angle. Now pull your center and staple between the two rows of staples and cut the excess. This guy did this whole process wrong, his corners are pursed and he left all the bulk.
Thank you for showing the detail on how you folded the corners, I've struggled with this...
You're welcome. I'm glad you found the video helpful.
Hi
Hello Hawkins Family. Did you enjoy the video?
Very good build
thanks
I like this video good work put more videos
I have more videos. Working on editing them.
Your video just helped reupholster my 'previously white' dining chairs! Thanks thousand times and I like how it s concise and to the point, good job! I just hit subscrive and will be watching many of your videos
I appreciate the feedback on my video style. I’m looking forward to another year of making DIY and woodworking videos. Thanks for subscribing
nice and lovely.
thank you!
love ur walls
Thanks John. That I give 100% credit to my Wife. She picked out the wallpaper and paint colour.
I got the answer I was looking for
Great! Good luck recovering your chairs
What is the best method of attaching vinyl faux to a chair that doesn't have any cushion and a front and back curve
Carpenter's glue if the vinyl has a woven back and the chair is wood or a contact cement like this: amzn.to/2tFD1jc if there it's just vinyl without a woven back.
Love what you did
Love the music
Love the spaghetti referral 😂🤳
And love the good vibes!

Keep up the great work.
Thanks for the nice comments. Glad like like my work.
I have covered my own dining room seats yrs ago but now need to know how to recover a chair back that is upholstered front and back....any demos?
Sorry I don't have a demo for upholstering seat backs.
Bet they are easier to clean up...look very nice on that black chair backs...
Oh ya, they are soooo! much easier to clean. The white fabric was like a sponge.
Thanks! The other videos spent too much time on things like "remove the seat from the chair". Duh!
Glad you liked the to the point format.
Sharon Garland well this guy had loud music playing and does not explain a darn thing!
I need to replace the cushions also on my kitchen chairs it's like sitting on cement lol and I cannot find a good video on that do you have one??
I haven't done a video on replacing the cushion. However, take the seat off your chair and take it to your local fabric store. They should be able to help you get a good piece of foam, batting and some fabric.
1976twiggy just do it yourself!
What is the name of your stapler? I have two that don't staple well.
It's from Canadian Tire: www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/mastercraft-heavy-duty-stapler-0577937p.html#srp
If they don't ship to where you live have a look at this one: amzn.to/2tV0jlH.
I should say I've not used the dewalt staple gun but the reviews look good and it is guarantee for life.
I'm just starting doing my 6 chairs.
If your hands are strong enough to use the "Arrow T50" type manual staplers, that's great - that's what I'm using, since the nice pneumatic staplers are much more expensive.
I think it's important to buy the right staple SIZE also. I tried 1/4 inch staples and they don't go through thick or dense/double layers of material. The interweb suggests 3/8 inch staples uphostery - and you might want to buy a 1/2 inch stash for the thick/double/triple material situations. For me, the 3/8 inch has been great so far.
You might also want to buy a tack puller and/or an "Arrow type" staple remover/puller. Both of these cost $3-5 at your neighborhood hardware store. The staples are $5 a box of 1,000 (don't get the "marine/rust resistant" staples which cost ridiculous amounts of money - $20-30 for the same 1,000!). By the way, you don't need as many staples as the OP puts in, and you might want to put them further from the edge of the cushion so they aren't visible. Putting the new cover over the old looks "controversial" to me, but as long as the old covers weren't wet and things don't slip, hey, it's an innovation over removing the old covers, and possibly replacing the 1 inch foam and batting material (polyester Dacron or cotton, as you like)...
Could have used a slower explanation of the corners, but my first recover turned out great. Thanks!
Thank you for the feedback. I've been thinking about re-editing this video to make it better. I will slow it down and add more clips of the corners.
What is the trick for when the seat cushion is thicker?
Pull the fabric really hard, start in the middle and work your way to the edges.
Keep checking to make sure your fabric is even as you go.
Please ignore the rude people out there you didnt tell that person to keep watching. Sad
Thanks Juliette for the good advice!
How many yards did you buy?
I measured one seat then added extra all the way around. Before I cut the materials I marked out the six squares on the back of the fabric. At this point I can't remember how many yards I used, sorry.
why you don't cut the extra at the corner. And you don't fix a black fabric( jacondas) at the end?
The frame of the seat covers the extra fabric. The original chairs didn't have the extra fabric. I didn't see the need to spend extra on covering the bottom with fabric as no one is looking under the chairs so I didn't need the extras..
It would have helped to see how those notches at the back fit into the chair frame.
Thanks for the feedback. I skipped over that as I figured most people would not have had those notches on their chairs. When I re-edit I will include that clip.
Where did you buy the faux leather??
I found at a local fabric store.
Check Hobby Lobby, if you have one nearby. Don't forget to check the clearance fabrics!
I need to cover seat pads with internal corners
Did you get you seats recovered?
Where do I buy the vinyl, my first attempt. Just got 4 vintage chairs.
You can find here: amzn.to/37LGQud (affiliate link)
The corners are tricky with thick fabric
They can be yes. You need to make sure your staples are long enough so they hold (I've learned that lesson)
What about the extra material left??? When you assembled the chair, I didn't see that bunch of material. Did you forget a step???
You can cut the extra material off.
I would've knocked that dewalt drill off that ledge at least 2x and gouged my floor. 😞
Ya I should probably have taken the chairs to the workshop.
You titled how to fold corners easy, but you flew through it and didn't really show the folds. Kathy again but slower on how to fold the material on the corners! Just sayin'....
Thanks for the feedback. I'm planning to re-edit this video and will use your comment to make it better.
An explanation of what you are doing and how to do it would be oh so much more helpful than stress-inducing music and speeded up filming. Moving on to someone else....
Thank you for the feedback I appreciate your honesty. This one is over do for a re-edit.
All you have to do is slow the video down. There's a 'playback speed' option right there on the video player in 'settings' (look for a round gear).
And for the music you can 'mute' it.
You just did you didn't show us how
Thank you for the feedback. I need to re-edit this one.
Too fast!!
Thanks for the comment. I've been wondering if I should post a re-edit or not.
Why is this in fast motion and why the loud annoying music and no talking?
Hi Butters, Thanks for the feedback. I'll look at adding a little more talking in future videos
I agree. It is a useful video but not fun to watch..
I appreciate the constructive feedback.
Patch up rush job! at least remove the old material.
The "old material" was still new. If it had been in bad condition I would remove it.
@@Woodified I would have left it too. There was no reason to take it off. Saves some unnecessary steps. Great job you did there. I was stuck at the corners. Thanks to you I think I can do them now.
@@thatgirlthatsme Glad my video helped you with recovering your chairs.
@@Woodified It absolutely did! My chairs turned out great! It's the first time I've ever done something like this. I honestly couldn't have done those corners if I hadn't found your video. My chairs look brand new again. So glad you took the time to make this video. So much appreciated!
Too fast
thanks for the feedback. Maybe it's time I reedit the video.
Amateur video. Manual staplers are for beginners.
Thanks for the critique. I was pleased to hear that you agree my video is spot on with my target audience.
Woodified lol
