The luscious soundscapes that Duran Duran creates here are so moving and powerful. I don't know how anyone can listen and not be touched. The official video (not this one)and single version are a real treat and matched well with visuals and song. Check out the video for Come Undone from the same album. Another gorgeous Duran Duran song to experience
While this is the explanation given by Simon Le Bon, the lyrics suggest a broader meaning. The line "Passion or coincidence once prompted you to say, pride will tear us both apart" suggests that the song could also be interpreted as lamenting a love affair going wrong.
@@MongooseTales Of course you or anyone else can interpret the song as you wish & Simon Le Bon (as seen & read in interviews) encourages this as he rarely provides an explanation about his song's lyrics. So yes, the words can mean whatever one wishes them to be. However, the song, fundamentally, is about Le Bon still processing the loss of his childhood & close friend, David Miles, who had passed away five years prior in 1986 to writing "Ordinary World" in 1991. The song is not only inspired by Miles but it is also influenced by The Gulf War (1990-1991). "Ordinary World" is the second part in a trilogy of songs that centers around Le Bon & Miles' passing. The first song was written soon after Miles' death & it is called, "Do You Believe In Shame?" found on Duran Duran's "Big Thing" album released in 1988 & also as a single in 1989. The song can also be found on the motion picture soundtrack for the film "Tequila Sunrise" starring Michelle Pfeiffer. "Out Of My Mind" concludes the trilogy & was released in 1997 as a single from Duran Duran's "Medazzaland" album in 1997. The track was also the main theme for the motion picture "The Saint" starring Val Kilmer.
My favorite Duran Duran song. I'd normally go with a band's higher energy songs, but I love this one. Others to recommend, Hungry Like the Wolf, Notorious, A View to a Kill, Rio, Skin Trade, Femme Fatale....
I'm a metal fan but have always had a special place in my heart for Duran Duran. Every lineup of this band is extremely talented, and they are all top-notch musicians. Nile Rodgers has played with them, and so has Warren Cuccurullo (Frank Zappa, Missing Persons, this album). That kind of gets lost in the glitzy aspect of the image they portrayed.
For me, this song was about the life I left behind. I was jobless for the longest time and hatched a ride out of state, where I now became homeless a well. The 'Ordinary Wotld' to me was trying to get back that part of my life I lost. I had made a friend during that time, who also had to leave, making this song fully encapsulating my life at the time of release

This is such a beautiful song, a huge change from their previous sound, but it's awesome! I loved this song as soon as it came out and listened to it quite ofter but now as I have gotten older, the message hits A LOT harder. I had typed the above before the end of your reaction but you are close, the song is about the loss of someone, it was written in the memory of a friend of his that had passed away.
He lost a good friend who took his own life. Simon Le Bon wrote the grieving process about trying to get over it. Some of their other songs about Simon's friend. Many musicians are able to get it out of their system by writing songs about it. A kind of therapy.
I watched a Netflix doc on them recently where Simon LeBon was talking about how different this song is from their early work which was typically much more abstract and ironic. He said he thought it was time to be less guarded and just write a sincere song about how he was feeling at the time. Kind of like when Adam Ant recorded "Wonderful".

Great reaction, thanks Shawn!😊 To me this is one of the most beautiful sad songs ever written. The verse with "here beside the news of holy war and holy need, ours is just a little sorrowed talk" (for years I thought it was "just a little sorrow, that's all") always gives me chills.
I never got that impression but can't blame you for thinking it because sometimes lyrics, when heard, can be hard to decipher. This line is influenced by The Gulf War (1990-1991).
Although I grew up then I'm not one of those people who claim that all the best music was in the 60s and 70s. This song is pure genius. I like several of their songs but this one is beautiful.

Simon Le Bon said (according to the song's wiki page) "everyone who heard it could apply it to something in their life, but for a different reason." His original meaning is very moving, but IMO one reason it's a great song is that people can relate to it in so many different ways. (For me personally, it has been about many things, but especially surviving with a chronic illness. And the verse with the lines about war etc. makes me think of the death of one of my pets, among other losses...just a little sorrow in the grand scheme of things, but not small to me.) It was the first Gulf War happening when they wrote it, but I'm not sure which war really mattered, in terms of the meaning of that verse...I think it could be any war, or any great suffering happening in the world. That's interesting about the trilogy, I never knew that.
@@intothesunset3 Absolutely, the song can & is applied to various situations & experiences in one's life. Not familiar with the group. Nice song. It's amazing how new tunes are created with so few notes & chords to choose from. I love minors. I feel sadness & joy at the same time. Language of the soul.

This is about his best friend dying-it’s so true that while you’re in the midst of soul shattering grief the ordinary world just carries on
