July 3rd 2023???
It looks and sounds peaceful. The most important recharge is ourselves-just getting away from the normal pace and pressures of life.
🙂
I, too, am retired and am enjoying car camping out of my Toyota Highlander. Started last fall and have been out four times, 3 nights each trip. I focus on staying at National Forests, not park, campgrounds. Got a senior lifetime pass so it's usually $10/night. Just the right amount of privacy, nature and security for me.
Like you, each time I camp I come up with more improvements and that's part of the fun! Here are my camping tips garnered from UA-cam videos:
1. I bring an old, flat bed sheet and use it on the picnic table. Gives me a clean surface and nothing falls through the tabletop cracks. Simple to wash when I get home.
2. Upgraded to a 4" trifold memory foam mattress, twin extra long. Easy enough to level out with additional blankets.
3. Bought a pop-up shower tent. Good place to pee at night and I can get dressed standing up.
4. Screens are a must in warm weather. I have a magnetic one for the sunroof, a pair of slipover ones for the middle passenger windows, and a large screen for the rear. Also use a usb fan.
Sounds wonderful!
I have netting window covers and a small usb fan. Both are GAME CHANGERS for car camping!!!!!😊
I agree. There are solar charged fans too. You just put it on the car dash with the solar panel facing the windscreen and toward the sun.
I haven't had it warm enough to use a fan yet (WY) but those bug screens for the car windows are indeed essential. Cheap too. I think two of them were less than $15 on Amazon.
I joyously gave up camping in 1987, and it is always interesting to watch videos of campers struggling with heat, cold, insects, refrigeration, cooking, sleeping, and of them experiencing the rewards of the ever-present enjoyment of coffee. For me, the food preparation is always the most fun to watch, maybe because eating is fun, and even watching someone else cook and eat is fun. Sort of like watching someone else de-clutter. I always enjoy your videos.
😊
🤍
I love watching folks prepare a meal, cook, and eat as well.
ForestyForest is my favorite channel to watch for cooking content.
First time watching this channel. So, we’ll see.
What happened in 1987 that made you give up the joys of camping?
🙂🙂
We love camping. Now we have a small camper. When my mom retired, she took a long trip across country. She slept in her Subaru wagon. But she also took a small pup tent to both free up room for sleeping and to keep a “presence” at her site if staying more than one night. I dream of doing same one day. Love the awning.
I always freeze a gallon jug of water then place it in my cooler the night before. It cools the cooler before I put my stuff/ice in the day of. I have an Engel cooler. Then when camping I keep a damp towel over my cooler because I keep it in my car, due to its weight. Its too heavy for me to lift in and out, and I car camp for a week or two. Battery operated fan and a thick foam pad. Nice set-up!
🙂🙂
Camping is never boring. It is peaceful and a great place to read a good book. 🥰
😊
❤🙂
Thanks ❤❤❤
There is nothing like that early morning cup of coffee when you’re camping.
😊
Thank you for another great video. I have camped all my life and backpacked from the 1970s. I sleep my best when camping. I would rather camp than stay in a hotel. My rig now is a minivan but have used the same bed in a Jeep Patriot too and it is really great. I have a self inflating matrices that is 3 and 1/2" thick and has a foam core. Mine is made and sold by REI, and mine is short because I am verticality challenged. If you go up in elevation more than 2,000' you need to open the inflating valves and it is a good ideal to do the same if the day's are going to be hot. Battery or usb fans are really nice too. I love camping in the fall winter and spring the best because, no bugs, the stars, and it is less crowded. Living and camping out of a vehicle has allowed me to escape winter and see many parks, wilderness areas and preserves as well as historic sites. It is shocking how inexpensive you can travel in a car or minivan. My late husband taught me that when conditions are bad or you just want to watch a football game, a Motel can be a nice treat. Traveling in a vehicle and camping is a great platform for exploring this continent. Don't make it too comfortable or you may not want to go home...❤😊
🙂
Good for you. My husband and I camped for 26 years and loved it. The problem was that with camping and traveling with 3 kids we were more tired when we got home than when we left. That experience did give me wonderful memories. In the 1990s we decided to hang it up on the camping and enjoy staying in one place in a nice condo or Airbnb. I still have the first tent that we purchased in 1968 which was a 2 man pup tent. We camped all over the west with it and even took it to Hawaii. That tent and 2 sleeping bags was our accommodation for 1 week on 3 of the islands. Sometimes we just threw the bags on the beach and slept there. Other times there were beautiful camp grounds. The one had flush toilets, hot showers, green lawn, lagoon and waterfall and we were the only 2 people there. I still have a 2016 large high roof Transit van that I purchased for the business. It has very few miles on it and I have thought many times of converting that into a travel RV.
😊
Oh, I hope you WILL covert that van! And document the process!😊
That would be wonderful for adventures!
Looks fun. I never was a camper (I like hot water, bathrooms, and kitchens). The packing/unpacking always looks like so much work. 😂
😊
I just returned from my three week solo overlanding trip number three since retiring last year. I always learn new skills and strengthen my confidence. I’m so glad you’re seeking this outlet! I have reworked my pack out each time to fine tune. I drive a Toyota FJ Cruiser with a Rooftop Tent and 270 awning. I also quickly realized the 12V fridge was the way to go. I also have two Jackery’s for power.
Try a gutter guard for your windows for airflow. Cut it down to size of your window. It has grooves on the top and bottom that should fit right around the glass and into the top of the window.
Your shirt is hilarious. Beautiful campground!
Camping looks like a lot of work, but there are ways around much of it. Keep a master list of what is needed so that you don't have to reinvent the wheel. Bring USB charged fans, and a small charging block that you can plug into your ciggarette lighter. Bring a rechargeable flashlight as well. Bring frozen food, which will allow your ice to last longer. This video excited me fot my camping trip this summer with my two dogs. Its call of the wild for them, they go back to their wolf selfs.😊
😊
You mentioned a driving trip that would go to Rochelle IL, and you weren't sure what was there if interest.
IF you drive 54 miles south on Illinois 39, that will bring you to Ottawa ( IL
and the destination of STARVE ROCK ILLINOIS STATE PARK. If you've never been, it's magnificent and history. The caverns, the waterfalls, the overlooks to scenery. Illinois River, the Mississippi River and the Eagles that nest at the park. So whether you choose Starve Rock or Matthiason Park, neither will disappoint your photography session.
It's basically my backyard and the stretches of kettles and forest can't be beat.
Putting it on my list!
🥰
Check out Kayak Starved Rock private campground across the river from the state park. You could rent a kayak or bring your own! It's on the Illinois River. Check out historic Ottawa and Awesome Ottawa Tours.
I enjoyed this 😊 Nice to see you getting out there and doing something new to you 🎉
Congratulations! Hope you had a great time!
Video was inspirational. Thanks for sharing.
Trial runs are for tweaking the process. Looking forward to future trips you share with us.
🙂
Nice relaxing video. You did a good job. It takes a few outings to get the right setup that works for you. Keep at it you find the perfect fit for you.
"and yes they are real birds" 😂 I have never camped, not for me...but I loved watching you and understanding what it takes. Good mix of music and real sounds, good talk drinking your coffee...
🙂
My coffee saves the day🤍
Great job! Camping can be challenging, but worth it if you find serenity.
Nice very calming video, Thanks💖💖💖
What fun! Looking forward to seeing more of these videos.
☺
I enjoyed your video. I am looking forward to the future camping trips that you mentioned. I love to camp. There is peace being out in nature. Thanks for sharing! Joy and blessings to you!
🙂🙂
I really enjoyed your video you got this! My first night out in my Toyota Venza was sweltering. I had no screens no fan! I fixed that right away. It’s an easy fix. I bumped up to the minivan pretty quickly. It is a game changer. I enjoy your cooking videos too! 🦖Enjoy the road. Stay safe. 👍🚙🏞️🇺🇸
I really enjoyed your video. Its the 1st one i have watched. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it! I hope you’ll stick around!
I like your vibe, just the way you are. There is no need for chitter chatter if you're not in the mood. Just take us along. Enjoy learning and have fun with the journey. I think you're doing great. Bless you😊
We live in the PNW & we camp 🏕️ a lot. I enjoy cooking outdoors & feeding my family. I really enjoyed this content, thank you Tim✨🌷🩵
What a beautiful morning! You are so organized and making coffee was really cool. Your breakfast looks delicious and all the cooking gear is neat. Thanks for taking us along. Xo
☺
Love the scenery.
A solar generator would power your camera equipment, run a fan and also a plug in cooler. They don't produce any fumes or noise and can be charges from home before you leave if you don't want to use the solar panels.
The cooler I've used is from Aldi. It is available for $50, starting tomorrow. We checked ours with a medical lab thermometer and it runs around 37 degrees.
For netting, I've seen mesh tarps that could be thrown over the car, allowing the sunroof to be open and heat to escape.
Check out Mile High Campground in Cherokee, NC on the Blue Ridge Pkwy. 5000 ft elevation and EVERY site has either a stunning sunrise or sunset view. Primitive campsites but there are showers and bathrooms. Unbelievable place. The high, in August when we were there, was 65-68.
😊
I just retired May 31, and my teardrop camper (essentially a bed on wheels with AC and an outdoor kitchen) is almost done being repaired from the mid-April massive hailstorm we had here in CenTex. Once my car repair (same storm!) is done in about 3-4 weeks, I look forward to getting on the road with the dogs and getting OUT of Texas and the heat and finding places north until mid-September. Thanks for the view and for the motivation to get this trip planned.
😊
Looking good, Sir!! Safe travels.
Others have a Mini Fan. Yes, Solar and portable battery bank. Peaceful and the coffee with breakfast looked yummy😎👍
Too funny, coincidental. Have been thinking same. Good for you to go for it. Good videography. Lots of info here on car/ tent camping. Enjoy!
Happy New adventures, travel safe!
Good to get out and about !
Am in the east Tn area and I travel around with my pup. Each trip one gets better at boondocking or camping. Thanks for vid.
H.Lee Dye
Looked like a fairly successful maiden run! It definitely helped to see what you need or change for the next time. It just looked so relaxing and I could feel that cool morning air and smell the coffee 🤤. I’m glad everything went well and you lived to tell the tale! I’m looking forward to your next adventure! 🚙
😊
I love your t-shirt! I have this on my wish list. Loved the video. Beautiful!
☺
One of the newer DIY TENDS is using Gutter Guard covers on the top portions of your car/truck/van windows. Easy to cut them to fit. They allow for fresh air without bugs. Good for ventilation when cooking inside on rainy days if you install Rain Guards. 1 or 2 small USB fans and your good 😉. Enjoy your retirement👍. Nice calm camp!
Nice little video! Looks like a peaceful little reprieve! See you in your next one! I wish you well on future trips.
☺
You did amazing Tim. Inspires me to want to start camping again.
🙂☺
Ahh, the memories. Thank You for taking us along on your camping trip. We are early risers too and I forgot about staying quiet in the mornings when there are other campers right next to you. We broke down and bought a good thermos for our first cup of coffee in the morning, so we weren't waking the neighbors then we had our real cup of coffee later on with breakfast. Loved the birds in the background, a wonderful video.
☺
I liked this change-up to your videos that you normally do at your house. Look forward to more of them 🙂
☺
You are doing fine it looks very peaceful where you are
Amazingly beautiful and peaceful. I’m sure your tinkering about woke no one till the aromas of coffee, bacon and eggs drifted through the campsite. What a wondrous way to wake to new day. 😊
🙂
Camping is very relaxing ! The people most of time are pleasant. There are a lot of things to think about .A lot of preparation and planning. It is a great experience and yes a lot of photography opportunities!
☺
I love camping like this!
I love your words "take the show on the road". Haha. Can't wait.
😊
To me, the ambience of the camping video is pleasant and soothing. ❤
🙂
Modern tent camping is a great channel. Frazier is a wealth of knowledge on packing your supplies and setting up your site.
Thanks!
One thing I learned not to do while camping is to have anything open in the car while there is a wood fire nearby. Otherwise, the car will smell like it was in a forest fire. It’s even worse when it’s a car someone else usually drives, and they didn’t come camping. The cause of doing this was group camping in the rain. Those awnings are great for diverting smoke into a rear hatch.
🙂
Nice test run. Enjoyed watching and hearing your comments.
☺☺
Looks like fun. Love the views you showed.
☺☺
Hello Tim.
Oh my goodness, you had me with the pour over coffee and ground beans camping 😊
Where you lost me was sleeping in the car 😅
I'm not sure if this video is recent, but we are all for the most part in the midst of a HEAT WAVE.
I camped once, just once, at Iron Mountain in the U P. Gorgeous there, however, when you add in bugs, BIG bugs I decided camping wasn't my desire lol.
The quiet and serene beauty at the lake is priceless and I'm glad it was yours to take in .
🙂
Great video. I had to cancel my week long cabin camping dues to the heat dome. From one old timer to another, just some suggestions you might find useful:
* Replace the black tie-downs with something either very bright or glow in the dark.
* Instead of using foam pads as padding, get an inflatable pad, the kind hikers use, not an air mattress but the thinner rugged type. These will roll up nicely for easy stowage.
* Look up a YouTubber who calls herself, "Shoestring Martha"; she's a frequent boondocker out of her 4Runner.
Thanks!
🙂
Wow! You bought top of the art equipment 👍
I love camping with equipment that makes it easier
I’m not in to off the grid camping
I need my pillows 😂
You had a nice site right by the river. I have a small fan l use in my car, but I'm buying a small portable air conditioner for cars. Definitely, a thicker foam mattress will help. The breakfast looked good. That combined with the solitude and beauty of the outdoors is good for the soul. The best part of camping for me.😊 So relaxing.
☺
It doesn't matter what you camp in as long as your relaxing and enjoying yourself. If your going to spend more time camping you can buy more gear as you go. But I have enjoyed watching your new channel, and look forward to future videos. I have a Tacoma pickup truck and Im newly tetired and I have already started taking weekend trips and meeting friends on campsites. Smiles
I love watching from the beginning. I am biding my time as I take care of my aging parent. I feel blessed that I have a ton of camping experience, but I am honestly looking at car camping and eventually van dwelling as the next chapters and I feel like learning how to make that happen is a life skill I'm learning. Currently have my '24 Subaru Outback set up to car camp and it's SUCH an improvement over tent camping! Especially as I am growing older. Subbed, and looking forward to watching you grow.
Welcome!
Some of my best nights of sleep are in a tent, on a cool night with a nice breeze .. 👌
I recently added a makita portable coffee maker that operates on a drill battery to my gear
Nice video. I’ve camped in tents, cars, minivan and large RVs. They all have their perks, but as I age, a small/van RV seems ideal. Nimble yet home-like. Peace - John
🙂😊
I only live about half an hour from Harrison Bay, my wife and I love camping there. It, along with Fall Creek Falls, are two of our favorites in this area.
I love the sound of the birds. I love camping. But I would rather like a tent and an air matrres to sleep in. Looks really beautiful there. I am sure you will really enjoy the trip to great smokey mountains. Great video Tim. Have a great day!!
🙂
We tent camped alot in our younger days. Hearing blue jays in the morning still brings me back to quiet mornings a campground. Tfs
😊
🙂
Wow! You bought top of the art equipment 👍
I love camping with equipment that makes it easier
I’m not in to off the grid camping
I need my pillows 😂
Don’t worry if you feel you’re not entertaining…….most of us to watch to see the good and the not so good
We learn from each other ❤
I really need like this. Camping in a peaceful beautiful places. At age of 45.
As a kid, we did the tent camping thing for a minute -- but after a rainy night - sleeping bags on the ground, waking up wet was not my thing. Your adventure looked well thought out, loved the breakfast; missing a biscuit, home fries and a table cloth. The shot where your back is to the camera, looking at the lake drinking coffee--priceless, frame-worthy. 😊🚙
🙂
I’m glad that you enjoyed this adventure. The 1st time we camped w/kids (toddlers), they got so dirty that if they laid down on the ground, we couldn’t find them! It led to a family life of camping that our two sons carry on with their families. We really "graduated" when we purchased a 1994 tent trailer that we still own and that one son still uses.
I’m sorry that you didn’t have a campfire. To me, that's a highlight in the evening AND in the morning. There’s just something totally mesmerizing about a campfire. Add in a sweet dessert in the evening and you're in heaven. S’mores, anyone!? I’m sure there are UA-cam videos about starting and ending a campfire.
I’m sorry that this is so long but I’m stunned to read the comments of many women in this community who seem to camp on their own. I’m 75, reasonably healthy and would like to get back in to camping. But heading out on my own seems so challenging. As always, thanks for sharing…
🙂
I've been looking forward to this one! Everything looked good. I'm interested in seeing your net upgrades. If you ever want to go to Snoopers Rock on a Thursday morning. Let me know!!
🙂
Love how you are making a trip to all the places you have lived. I started life in Chicago but have lived in Ohio, Texas, Oklahoma and now Missouri. I am glad for all the places i have lived😊
❤
🙂
Great video, Tim. You are better than me. I'm glad you enjoyed yourself.
😊
I got a Coleman 1 burner butane stove. It’s super easy to just take it out of the case & fire it up! Compact, & the pots & tea kettles are so stable on the top.
Happy camping 😎☕🏕️😅😊
Starting off with a bang with those nature sounds
☺
We have tent camped along with an oversized van in the 70’s when money was tight and kids were young. Took a trip from midwest to west coast and was on the road for 4 weeks. Four of us and my brother, stayed a few days with relatives in Washington State and Phoenix, Arizona. Kept a journal and tracked every penny which I still have - spent less than $1,000 including gas!! Later when my husband had a contracting business we had a two person fifth wheel , then an all season pull behind. We have zigzagged across the US multiple times and seen the most magnificent country. Now my husband is in early 80’s and we do just hotels.. Love your videos and realistic info ! Enjoy your travels while you can.
😊
such a great trial !
☺
My in-laws used to love car camping along the Canadian east coast 😊
😊
Fun night out, your way! 😌
well said!
Love Mari!
I love that you take your coffee beans and set up with you!
Always!!!
❤
🙂
Get a screen tent and put it over the picnic table. Keeps the bugs out of the food and the mosquitoes out at night. Plus you can hang a lantern in the middle.
I love your commitment to grinding your coffee. I'm lazy and just bring instant. 😂
😊
Way to get out there!
restful sleep ....hope it was worthwhole live and learn
I like RV camping, as in, a really nice RV 😂
I like the air conditioning and a comfy bed. My grandson who is 15 wants to go camp on an island on Lake Ouachita. Which means I would have to go, as the only adult, because it's just the two of us. Of course he would bring a friend. I wonder if I could get up after laying down in a tent 😂
First visit here...the steak looked good. Your voice is very relaxing. Best of luck. You can charge your phone in your car
It was very enjoyable going camping with you! 😊
🙂☺
I just got back into canopy camping last year. Took my first trip car (small SUV) camping a couple weeks ago. You go into that first trip thinking you know what you will need and thinking you know what will work, and finding you got some of it wrong. My experience with truck canopy camping last year was you go into the 2nd and 3rd etc. nights armed with experience and a better idea of what you really need and what you can do without. Those mosquito nets for windows are a must. A foam pad for sleeping is a must for me. You can get a 3" or 4" tri-fold mattress (couple layers of hard foam and an inch or so of gel foam on top) fairly cheaply off Ebay or Amazon. I, of course, didn't go that route and bought some (expensive) hard foam through a local upholstery guy and added a couple inches of (not too expensive) gel foam from Walmart to go on top of it. I bought a thin but warm king-sized blanket that I fold over and don't even need a sleeping bag unless it drops into mid 30's. I sleep on top of the sleeping bag for more padding but have the sleeping bag handy in case I need it. Fro cooling your vehicle at night I suggest a rechargeable fan with a clip mount or some way you can put it where you need it. Handy for pulling air in from one of the windows or just to blow on you on hot nights to help keep you cool. My thoughts on a couple of subjects, take them or leave them as you see fit.
By the way, and like you mentioned, to me the best part of camping is having breakfast and a cup of coffee next to a river or a mountain lake. For me that, and getting some nice pictures, is the highlight of camping, that hour or so in the morning that makes all the preparation and driving worth it.
Some time ago, I built out a small trailer for camping. A video showing the build out is on my channel. It was very comfortable. But now I like my luxuries - like a bathroom. You might enjoy a channel called Hike Camp Climb. He also does some no speaking ASMR videos and his camera work is so good. I love his winter videos when we can hear the snow or sleet hitting the tent. The sounds of him chopping wood to put in his small tent stove is very relaxing. I think you’d enjoy.
I’ll look that up. Thank you!
❤😊
🙂
USB rechargeable fans that you can clip to the grab bars (we call them "oh my gosh!" bars 😂) over the back doors are great for beating the heat. I have 4 of them. No-see-um netting so you can vent the windows is also a plus, allows a little air in/heat out and helps reduce condensation. You are spot on with the WeatherTech window covers! Those are awesome!
I bought two of those fans. Just waiting for them to come in!
I LOVE camping! I grew up camping and those memories will be with me always. The only thing i don’t like are bugs😌 what a beautiful spot
❤
bugs, snakes, spiders, skunk, scorpion, chiggers That's why I'd love to camp inside one of the atriums at Gaylord in Nashville. 😎😁💖
I love camping too, I used to go camping across Michigan with my horse.
@@PamHaynes-oo3ck How fun!!
@@Good-DaySunshineHi Good Day. It was😂😂😂
Starved Rock State Park is about an hour south of Rochelle, IL. It is lovely there. Depending on when you travel, there are waterfalls to photograph.
☺
It’s a shame you’re not a camper. Hope you get more from the experiences than expected. As a lifelong lover of camping I envy you. It would be heaven on earth for me. My best.
Great video. Peaceful
☺
This is a great video! I'm retired as of today! I'm going to do the same thing!
Thanks for sharing.
🤗
This is something I have been dreaming of doing. I am going to do it this Summer. 🎉🎉🎉
❤
