Remember when Rolling Stones played Worc? My neighbors Dad had tix. His son and I begged for them but he sold them for a mint and we ended up with the Beach Boys tix. Still a great concert though.
I've lived in Worcester for 2 years (the past 2 years, moved out for work). Although I lived there mostly through the pandemic, the post-pandemic times were one of the best I've had. There are lots of things to do in this relatively small city and at the same time it doesn't have the hustle and bustle of big cities. You can catch a game at the Polar Park, lots of hiking trails and parks, good clubs(I used to go to a standup that was done regularly at Park Grill, Park Ave), great and diverse food options and very friendly people (except for massholes!). The great hiking trails of NH is just an hour's drive away. If you are craving big city, Boston is 50 minutes away! If you are craving a bigger city, NYC is 3.5 hours away! The rents can be low if you are willing to share apartments. I and many other grad students like me were paying 400+ utilities, but I would imagine you would be paying something like 1200 for an apartment of your own (one of my friends lived in a great place like that in downtown with its own tennis court, swimming pool, fireside place, coffeehouse, bbq, etc). Pretty good deal if you ask me. If I had a work-from-home job, Worcester would definitely be top5.
From grad student point of view. Does the location matter much? Or the university? I got admit in pace University in NY and Clark University and I'm confused as to which one to choose because clark is a better school and pace is in a better location.
That depends on the individual. Personally both of those things ultimately played into my decision back when I went to grad school. Ask yourself, do you want to work or live in the same state after grad school? If so, location will make a significant impact.
@@shrutidhapodkar6956 If having a good time during those 2 years is a priority, then location is VERY important. As for working, if you are opting for something like data science which can be done remotely, location is not a factor at all. You can get a job anywhere in the states. I could tell you something about my post-pandemic time in Worcester apart from what I already wrote up there. Some of these things are specific to WPI and I am not quite sure if they would apply to Clark. As an Indian grad student, most of your friend circle (about 80-90%) would be Indian. This sucks , in my opinion, and I initially thought the Indian students are stupid to not engage with the diversity of the place, but I was mistaken. There are multiple reasons for this, foremost being roommates and the course choices we make as a result of hearsay. Indian students generally tend to find each other to be compatible roommates and also because the South Asian community is so well-connected, it is another Indian they eventually end up with when co-signing a lease. Further, as I mentioned, course gossip. Many Indian students end up taking the same course at the same time, Practical reasons again; helping each other out (not cheating, mind you, that's taken very seriously here), the Indian alumni telling them that the particular course is good, etc. Also, the graduate student population, especially in tech courses (which is what Indians go for) are overwhelmingly Indian/Chinese. Americans largely are found in undergrad. That being said, you would still end up getting a lot of non-Indians as teammates or something else. But you would have to go out of your way to make close friendships with them; of the kind you would have with other Indians. Many Indians just deem it unfruitful and stick to status quo and I don't think it is unreasonable on their part to do so. We all came here for a more important reason! Again, as I said this would be for WPI, my instinct tells that it would pretty much the same for Clark for the same reasons, but you are better off talking to someone there. As for doing things, NYC beats Worcester any-day, but your location matters, no matter which of the 5 boroughs you end up in NYC or even Jersey City if you choose to live there instead and commute to Pace everyday. I have a soft spot for Worcester for the reasons I mentioned above. There was nothing you couldn't get in Worcester, despite it being a small city. You just have to get out more (something a lot of Indian students did not do) and explore. If you have a driving license, it is a big PLUS! You have many relatively cheap car rentals here that make it easy to go on trips. The weather's pretty much the same in both places, with Worcester's winter being a tad bit harsher (but also beautiful, lol) and the Fall season is always beautiful in New England.

The main plus: affordability! Nothing east of Worcester is even in the same stratosphere as what anyone who works for a living could afford and nobody wants to live too far west of it since there's only sadness and isolation and houses 40 minutes from the nearest grocery store
@@livinginmassachusetts25 Luxurious triple Deckers only exists in sandwich form. Born and raised here, watched it deteriorate. The rents are ridiculous ! Its great to have these colleges however all the housing has become geared to them,as you need to live with other people to afford anything decent! Not geared to working families anymore . The crime is out of control and people are just straight slobs. Too many absentee landlords which makes properties uncared for and really slummy ! Worcester sold itself to the highest bidders and pushed the families that help build this city out of it...!!!
The worst things about Worcester is the crummy roads and areas run down by opiate users and criminal minded immigrants who choose to be thugs rather then work honorably for their survival. The drivers are willfully obtuse and extremely rude and entitled when criticized about their misdeeds rather then apologetic like normal honorable people. Affordable housing and less corrupt police force. Take those elements out and the city is very diverse and historic. Good colleges and quick drives to other major cities like Boston, Providence, Hartford and Springfield. So if city life is what you like, Worcester is hard to beat and is overall safer then other similar sized cities. Just needs a little bit of spit and elbow grease to get this gem to shine again.
Being from the north shore city of Danvers, you couldn't pay me a million dollars to live in one of the hundred most dangerous cities in the United States.
It really depends on which part you're looking in. It is a surprisingly big city so there are rough parts and other places that are shockingly nice. We always reccomend checking crime maps online...there are a couple of resources that the city police department can refer you to.
@@livinginmassachusetts25 City police are not allowed to discuss "high crime areas" if you call in and simple ask which sections of ANY city are high crime, but there are resources out there you can use.

Don't forget that collectible cup.
Sadly Becker College closed for good 2 weeks after this video was made.
Oh my goodness I'm sorry to hear that. Thank you for updating us though.
I was gonna move out there and I just don't no
There's a lot of factors to consider for sure. Reach out if you ever have any questions!
Worcester is the 2nd largest city in New England, not just Mass :)
This is true! Did Matt say in Mass 😆...that guy always flubs his lines. Thank you for making this correction. -Tyler
Ps. I'm mostly joking, Matt is a delight...we have a bit of a bromance.
The main plus: affordability! Nothing east of Worcester is even in the same stratosphere as what anyone who works for a living could afford and nobody wants to live too far west of it since there's only sadness and isolation and houses 40 minutes from the nearest grocery store
Three Deckers are what Worcester has instead of trailer parks.
Woah! What about luxury triple Deckers ? 😉
@@livinginmassachusetts25 Luxurious triple Deckers only exists in sandwich form. You can turn a three decker into condos, remodeling the kitchen and bath, but it's the same concept as putting lipstick on a pig, or polishing a turd. I grew up in one, a 3 decker. We had nice neighbors and there were lots of cool kids in the neighborhood to hang out with. I never want to live in a three decker again. I live in a high rise in NYC now, built of solid concrete, so I rarely Here my neighbors. Our favorite summer activity was when the across the street neighbors would fight, and the wife would throw dishes out the window at the husband. It was always the highlight of summer vacation. It's how we learned to swear in.a foreign tongue. Our favorite winter activity was watching cars skid off the road, trying to drive downhill in the snow. It's how we learned to swear in English. I like Worcester, but I would never want to live there again. It'd a good place to be from. Snow is for children. Luxury three Deckers, is a real estate con job. If the guy or gal in the blazer utters those words, you need to find another real estate agent. All of those stairs is not considered a state if the art work out feature.
@@markrichards6863 Dude! i Lived in and miss living in 3 decca's!
❤ ur crazy 😜 been here in the Woo for 3 yrs. Originally from Boston 😊
Lol Matt is a wild man! Thanks for watching. How do you like Woostah?
@@livinginmassachusetts25 I do love it!
The best day you’ll have in Worcester is the day you move elsewhere.
The top line sell is hiking?!?! 😂
No top line sell is beer
Born and bred in WiSTA. LOVE IT. But not what's happening to it. So much corruption. But unfortunately thats everywhere.
Yeah, that is unfortunate truly. Are you still in Mass?
Just here to see the god that destroyed Limmy ua-cam.com/video/bSn73z5Buvw/v-deo.html
Being from the north shore city of Danvers, you couldn't pay me a million dollars to live in one of the hundred most dangerous cities in the United States.
You have a Bostonian accent.
Unfortunately Worester is ghetto now. I heard it used to be a great small city.
Heard/read the crime rate is HIGH compared to the rest of New England.
You're absolutely right, that's what i mean. I always call the station and ask what website they suggest to track local reports and calls. Some cities around here use a website called crime mapping, others don't.
Living in Tampa…not sure why I’m here
Well, thanks for being here anyways! We (mass and tampa) both had Tom Brady moments, so there's that.
Papa Gino's has DECENT pizza at least
Alright... I'll give you that... it's DECENT. I'm a Frank Pepe guy though
I lived in Worcester for two years. Simply. Awful. Place. Terrible roads. Crime. Unfriendly people. Ugly skyline. Crime. No sidewalks or bike trails. Guaranteed horrible winters. Crime. he only thing it has going for is that it's an hour to Boston or Providence.
LOL There are great schools in Boston, like Bunker Hill Community, Wheaton, Mass College of Pharmacy and uhm , uhm, oh ahh and Harvard. Basically how you listed the colleges in Worcester.
Also Worcester is NOT in Western Mass. It is Central Mass. Geeeesh....! 🙄🙄
I used to live there. Never again. I rather live in Boston or Providence. Or outside of New England. Never again!!!!
Aww, come on...come back, we have fresh baked cookies!
