Sonic 2 for Master System is my childhood. I'm not a fan of Sonic, but this game is one of my most favorite games. Played the crap out of as a kid, always had so many lives because of all the rings I collected. And a first game I finished 'till the end (Also I totally feel ya, for that ending). So awesome...

I had a similar instance with your tails situation as a kid, I was 4 or 5 and I'm playing my first game, megaman x and I'm having a blast, I get through the first level, pumped up for this awesome game ahead, I choose chill penguin stage, get through the level with the dash boots and I'm pumped up from the speed and then I get to the fight, whoop chills ass and then the screen stops, then the explosion of the boss. as a 4 year old not really understanding what's going on i freaked out and felt like I did something wrong so I cried lmao
Technically the Sega Nomad is another Sega handheld. It was kind of interesting in it played Genesis cartridges. The more you know...

Oh I remember playing Sonic 2 on the Game Gear as a kid, and by playing I mean dying constantly on the first boss due to the small resolution & then finally getting to the second Zone only to rage quit as soon as I got to the glider.
As of a few days ago, Sonic 06 is officially ten years old
Ahhh Sonic 1 for Master System was my first ever game and I don't think any Sonic game will beat it, for me. It might be partially nostalgia, but the soundtrack and backdrops were so good. Especially in Jungle and Scrapbrain.
FYI Collecting all of the chaos emeralds in the 1st game nets you a different ending and not just a higher score :).

that wall with a secret entrance, invisible, on sonic 2 sega master system, with one of the needed emeralds, is a true pain in the ass!!!.
i even was near to give up on those days, when i discover that fucking hidden room, when you are moving up into a big ramp.
a ramp, where you have to jump from the right to the left, for enter on a hidden roomp crossing trough the wall. this is located on a long ramp that comes from left to right.
Anyone remember the chain restaurants that used to loan out Game Gears with a hold of a driver's license for the kids while you ate there? My only memories of this system come from that time.
It's funny that I always thought Sonic 1 on the Master System was there before the Mega-drive. But then again, I was only introduced to consoles when the Master System II was out and had Alex Kidd pre-installed. I think I was around 7 or 8 maybe. Didn't even know the Mega-Drive existed then. When I saw the MD version I was like "oh, they upgraded Sonic, nice!" :).
I actually know Sonic on SMS better than on MD. In some way I still like it more... maybe nostalgia kicking in.
I played the gamegear version of sonic 2 on the sonic gems collection (for the gamecube) and oh my gosh, the nostolga flow.
How did Johnny not talk about that spike pit in Scrambled Egg Zone that you're unable to get out of?
I was poor as a kid, only had an MS so MS versions of 1 and 2 came for me before MD versions. To me, it made and still makes better chronological sense to play MS 1 / 2 and then MD 1/2/3 etc...

There was another Sega portable console, Johnny. The Sega Nomad. (although it was basically a portable Genesis and died quickly).
I remember playing sonic 2 for the game gear so much growing up. I never could beat the first part of the game so I just gave up and played spiderman lol.

Well, there's a good reason they made Metroid II floaty and slow after all. Slow it down, Sonic.
For someone like Quarter Guy who thinks that these games are only about platforming so the lack of shuttle loops is a positive in the 8-bit version of Sonic 1. Also FUCK THE ANTLION COMING STRAIGHT FROM THE UNDERGROUND! Also thank goodness for the full screen option for Game Gear games on the 3DS eshop. It will make playing the GG version of Sonic 2 a little more playable. Not much but still.

I absolutely love Sonic 1&2 on SMS because they don't try to emulate the Mega Drive originals, but do their own thing in 8-bit and do it damn well, just a shame the Game Gear ports suffered badly because of the resolution crunch, kudos to anyone who can tolerate those ports. As for the rest of the 8-bit Sonic games, they were just bad.

I swear the first boss of Sonic 2 on the GameGear is next to impossible on the actual system. The screen blur makes it almost impossible to ever see the tiny balls.
Screw the Antlion. I've had access to the boss through Sonic Adventure DX for years now and I still haven't beat it.
It's really easy on the Master System. You have way more room to see what's coming, AND the balls all bounce at the same low height. The Game Gear's low resolution gives you MUCH less time to react, and for some reason they added variable bouncing.
Okay, I never want to hear about Eggman's tiny balls.

Nowadays, people talk about the Game Gear like it was some kind of failure. And it's true that the Game Boy outsold it. But here's a little secret nobody tells you about: us kids back then who had Game Boys were SUPER jealous of the kids who actually had a Game Gear. Remember, back then, graphics were EVERYTHING, so the bright colors of the Game Gear looked so amazing to us. But it was pricey. And our parents had already gotten us a "portable game thingy." But kids who had Game Gear? Yeah, they were the shit.
I had both, both were really shit. Hehehe

A friend of mine had a game gear, and this thing sucked 6 batteries in 4 hours, while everybody else in our group was playing game boy all night (under the street light XD), having tournaments n stuff. So in the end, this one friend got a game boy as well and sold his game gear.
Not really. I had seen people with a Game Gear, but much like the genesis at the time I did not see a single game I wanted to play for it. These days I can look back and see quite a few interesting games I want to try out, but at the time there was nothing the GG offered that my trusty game boy didn't offer better.

I had a Game Boy growing up, whereas my best friend in school had a Game Gear. It's true the Game Gear had awesome graphics, but apart from the Sonic games, and maybe Streets of Rage, I didn't really care for the games. So no, I wasn't really jealous of him (until he got an SNES with Street Fighter II, that is)

It's kind of a shame that Johnny didn't mention the soundtrack to these games (least of all the fact that Green Hills Zone in Sonic 2 would later become Sonic CD's Japanese Intro Theme; I guess that is fairly common knowledge, though); they really do hold their own, and in fact I actually prefer Sonic 1 MS/GG's rendition of both Labyrinth and Scrap Brain Zone to that of the Mega Drive version.
The music of Sonic 1 8 bit is by Yuzo Koshiro, the composer behind Streets of Rage and Actraiser.
They certainly are good tracks. It would have been nice if some of those 8-bit games were represented in the handheld version of Sonic Generations so that we could listen to them with modern instrumentation.
It's also worth noting that some of Bridge Zone's composition was used for Tails's theme in Sonic Adventure.

Well in the instruction manual he did send a ransom note to Sonic saying that Sonic must give him the Chaos Emeralds if he wants his buddy Tails back. So if Sonic fell in the lava and died, then the ransom is meaningless...

Jose Colella Sonic Gems has them by default. The unlockables there are Vectorman 1 & 2
Don't forget the PS2 _Sonic Mega Collection Plus_, where you start with the first three, _3D Blast_, and a handful of the Game Gear games. It was fun unlocking games, like _Ristar_ which turned out being one of my favourites on the collection.

The one thing I've always hated, in every Classic Sonic game I've ever played, is mandatory no-ring challenges: Final Zone in Sonic 1, Death Egg Zone in Sonic 2, the Death Egg Robot in Sonic 3&K if you fail your first try as Sonic or Tails, EVERY ACT 3 of 8-Bit Sonic 1 and 2... I HATE having to do no-damage runs. Always have, always will.
Those are probably the main reason why I rarely go back to Classic Sonic nowadays, despite having been a big fan of Sonic in my childhood (even my favorite, Sonic 3 & Knuckles). I usually go for Mega Man or Metroidvania games when I feel like platforming.
DarkEinherjar one of the reasons Sonic CD is my favorite is because those no-ring challenges are nowhere to be found in that game

Forcing no-damage runs on the player is a bullshit way of making the game challenging, 'nuff said.

And I agree about the handglider: How is it even controlled? I just mashed buttons randomly as a kid, and SOMEHOW got the Sky High Zone Chaos Emerald with the Handglider once. I think, my recollection is fuzzy at best.

Sonic 1 & 2 on the Master System were the very first games I ever played, apart from Alex Kidd, and I loved them. The screen resolution makes all the difference though, I found the Game Gear versions basically unplayable. It's beyond me why they thought it was a good idea to port the Game Gear versions to Sonic Mega Collection instead of the Master System versions.
darcyzscarecrow you had sonic 1 and 2 on master system where you from? I'm American the original Nintendo out sold master system 10 to 1. so we didn't get to see the sonic on master system. genesis took off like a rocket here and gave super Nintendo a run for their money.

Probably an European, Australian or a Brazilian, there are many PAL and Brazilian exclusive Master System games like Mortal Kombat 3, Street Fighter 2, Land of Ilusion, etc.

Also in Brazil is like the universe that Sega outsold Nintendo by a large amount, the Master System sold about 5 million and the Mega Drive sold about 3 million (remember that Brazil is a third world country, videogames, especially back in the day were super expensives) the NES and SNES together didnt seld more than 1 million here.

Advance 1 is the best one...
1 is bland and 3 just sucks in all ways. Older people like 1 because it was the first one and younger people like 3 because of furry on furry action. 2 is lightyears ahead of both.
