Labyrinth sounds like good idea in your head, it could have worked better but the execution wasn't that great and people couldnt get past the fact sonic was so slow
I swear the first boss of Sonic 2 on the GameGear is next to impossible on the actual system. The screen blur makes it almost impossible to ever see the tiny balls.
It's really easy on the Master System. You have way more room to see what's coming, AND the balls all bounce at the same low height. The Game Gear's low resolution gives you MUCH less time to react, and for some reason they added variable bouncing.
Nowadays, people talk about the Game Gear like it was some kind of failure. And it's true that the Game Boy outsold it. But here's a little secret nobody tells you about: us kids back then who had Game Boys were SUPER jealous of the kids who actually had a Game Gear. Remember, back then, graphics were EVERYTHING, so the bright colors of the Game Gear looked so amazing to us. But it was pricey. And our parents had already gotten us a "portable game thingy." But kids who had Game Gear? Yeah, they were the shit.
@@malvessidrums I was never jealous. A friend of mine had a game gear, and this thing sucked 6 batteries in 4 hours, while everybody else in our group was playing game boy all night (under the street light XD), having tournaments n stuff. So in the end, this one friend got a game boy as well and sold his game gear.
Not really. I had seen people with a Game Gear, but much like the genesis at the time I did not see a single game I wanted to play for it. These days I can look back and see quite a few interesting games I want to try out, but at the time there was nothing the GG offered that my trusty game boy didn't offer better.
I had a Game Boy growing up, whereas my best friend in school had a Game Gear. It's true the Game Gear had awesome graphics, but apart from the Sonic games, and maybe Streets of Rage, I didn't really care for the games. So no, I wasn't really jealous of him (until he got an SNES with Street Fighter II, that is)
...Y'know something horrible i just realized? Sonic 2's false ending...When you look up into the sky...and you see a vision of Tails... One of the stars looks like a bullet hole. Make of that what you will.
In Tails Adventure, he actually uses real bombs from the start, and upgrades to shit like napalm and mini nukes Tails does NOT fuck around when he's by himself. He actually killed bird people. Not defeated, not taken prisoner, not arrested, _killed_ Who'd have thought Sonic was the moral beacon for Tails?
Sleeps are for squares and chumps. Johnny as well as the great Clement action is what's most important for the world to see no matter how late it gets even if you have to stay awake till morning.
Well in the instruction manual he did send a ransom note to Sonic saying that Sonic must give him the Chaos Emeralds if he wants his buddy Tails back. So if Sonic fell in the lava and died, then the ransom is meaningless...
Sonic never killed robotnik in both sonic 1's so he was probably being nice. Have you seen how many times Sonic could've killed eggman right then and there in the Sonic series?
It's kind of a shame that Johnny didn't mention the soundtrack to these games (least of all the fact that Green Hills Zone in Sonic 2 would later become Sonic CD's Japanese Intro Theme; I guess that is fairly common knowledge, though); they really do hold their own, and in fact I actually prefer Sonic 1 MS/GG's rendition of both Labyrinth and Scrap Brain Zone to that of the Mega Drive version.
They certainly are good tracks. It would have been nice if some of those 8-bit games were represented in the handheld version of Sonic Generations so that we could listen to them with modern instrumentation.
Johnny, I've been enjoying your work for a long time... but HOW _DARE_ YOU DISPARAGE MY BELOVED BRIDGE ZONE. I just don't know how I can respect your opinions as a video game critic from here on.
Honestly this is one of the funniest videos you have ever made man. Like honestly it had me so weak when you said that tails died. Realizing that as a kid and knowing how badly you screwed up. Your reaction is priceless
I'm surprised you didn't say anything about Green Hills Zone's music basically being an 8 bit rendition of Toot Toot Sonic Warrior. And that this game debuted _before_ Sonic CD.
+SomecallmeJohnny fair enough and I had fun with triple trouble.. Personally, anticipating that Sonic Pocket Adventure review myself, that game needs more love.
6:56 Actually Johnny a company that goes by the name of Ancient were responsible for developing this game and porting it not Sonic Team. Afterwards a company known as Aspect developed most Gamegear Sonic titles.
John's reaction to Tails death was priceless! Personally I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that Tails is dead, but I can see why he would think that. Its kind of like with Rayman Raving Rabbids which also ends with a cliffhanger. (although in that game that is the only ending you get which is just Rayman failing to save the Baby Globoxs)
The one thing I've always hated, in every Classic Sonic game I've ever played, is mandatory no-ring challenges: Final Zone in Sonic 1, Death Egg Zone in Sonic 2, the Death Egg Robot in Sonic 3&K if you fail your first try as Sonic or Tails, EVERY ACT 3 of 8-Bit Sonic 1 and 2... I HATE having to do no-damage runs. Always have, always will. Those are probably the main reason why I rarely go back to Classic Sonic nowadays, despite having been a big fan of Sonic in my childhood (even my favorite, Sonic 3 & Knuckles). I usually go for Mega Man or Metroidvania games when I feel like platforming.
You finally combine your personal issues with explaining the game design, what a rare treat~ and you somehow don't ramble about your personal experience when you talk about it... applauded.
Don't forget the PS2 _Sonic Mega Collection Plus_, where you start with the first three, _3D Blast_, and a handful of the Game Gear games. It was fun unlocking games, like _Ristar_ which turned out being one of my favourites on the collection.
Green Hills Zone in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-bit) is actually an early version of Sonic CD's Japanese Theme, "You can do Anything/ Toot Toot Sonic Warrior" and I love it!
To anyone wanting to play these games nowadays, I highly reccommend the SMS remakes of Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 by Creative Araya, from-the-ground-up remakes that make the level design better, put the chaos emeralds in special stages where they belong and adding super forms, more playable characters, more stages, the remakes are really the definitive versions of these games. And they're fanmade! I really love this fandom sometimes.
My first gaming experience was Sonic 2 on the Master System! :) I was really young, so couldn't get past the first boss - I had to ask my brother to pass it for me. I remember vividly seeing him play Sky High Zone. I also remember being confused as to why the controller had two buttons, when both did the same thing. Thanks for talking about it, specially since it seems so overshadowed compared to the inferior Game Gear version. It brought back great memories!
1 is bland and 3 just sucks in all ways. Older people like 1 because it was the first one and younger people like 3 because of furry on furry action. 2 is lightyears ahead of both.
Sonic 2 on Game Gear... FUCK THIS GAME. It was one of the first games I've owned, and GODDAMN THIS ANTLION!! If the bane of Johnny's Sonic life is the Slicers, Mine is the GODDAMN ANTLION!
Skizzy Sage One of. And even still, that damn antlion made me give up the game entirely. Plus, it was the Game gear version, which was Screen crunch central, I swear. And I agree about the handglider: How is it even controlled? I just mashed buttons randomly as a kid, and SOMEHOW got the Sky High Zone Chaos Emerald with the Handglider once. I think, my recollection is fuzzy at best.
Thanks for uploading this at 10 Johnny. I have to choose between a good night's sleep or potentially risking me becoming enticed in these videos and watching them all night ... ok the decision is obvious.
Sonic 1 & 2 on the Master System were the very first games I ever played, apart from Alex Kidd, and I loved them. The screen resolution makes all the difference though, I found the Game Gear versions basically unplayable. It's beyond me why they thought it was a good idea to port the Game Gear versions to Sonic Mega Collection instead of the Master System versions.
darcyzscarecrow you had sonic 1 and 2 on master system where you from? I'm American the original Nintendo out sold master system 10 to 1. so we didn't get to see the sonic on master system. genesis took off like a rocket here and gave super Nintendo a run for their money.
Thomas Reagan Probably an European, Australian or a Brazilian, there are many PAL and Brazilian exclusive Master System games like Mortal Kombat 3, Street Fighter 2, Land of Ilusion, etc.
Thomas Reagan Also in Brazil is like the universe that Sega outsold Nintendo by a large amount, the Master System sold about 5 million and the Mega Drive sold about 3 million (remember that Brazil is a third world country, videogames, especially back in the day were super expensives) the NES and SNES together didnt seld more than 1 million here.
my childhood right there! remember playing these two games mainly at my grans house late at night when I was about 7 or 8 both for the master system. these two sonic games were most memorable in my eyes cause at the time I didn't realize there was another version of sonic 1 and 2, (genesis). happy memories.
I'm so glad you're getting to the handheld games because even though they start off a little rocky, they get absolutely fantastic once we get to the GBA
As someone that owns one. Yes, it is literally a Genesis shoved into a 'small' container with a screen, a screen out port, and a second controller port.
8-bit Sonic 2 on the Sega Master System II was my first-ever video game. Plus I can finish the first level of Sonic 1 in 24 seconds. Also thank you so much for this. I'm in agony at the moment from a car crash and this makes me feel so much better.
Corrections: 1) The hardware cannot handle loops. Later GG titles have loops, but they're scripted events with no physics involved. 2) The Sonic Team did not make these.
@@DumbBunny5328 No, they don't. If you let go while upside down, he doesn't fall out of the loop. The speed at which you enter it doesn't change whether you hold a button or not. If you enter it slowly then let go, you still don't roll back the other way. Come on, dude. Don't spread misinformation.
Sonic 2 for Master System is my childhood. I'm not a fan of Sonic, but this game is one of my most favorite games. Played the crap out of as a kid, always had so many lives because of all the rings I collected. And a first game I finished 'till the end (Also I totally feel ya, for that ending). So awesome... You win this time Johnny, I'm subscribing.
Still don't know why, but I always come back to this video for the line "I can't process all this blast" (4:29). I can't point exactly why, but I love that line.
My parents had a distraught, weeping child on their hands the day I failed to find all the emeralds in Sonic 2. The 8-bit music playing over the credits was like a corkscrew to my heart. WHY, SEGA?
The worst part is, they never released the MS versions anywhere else, same for Chaos and Blast. Which is a shame since those are obviously the best versions.
Awesome review, Johnny! I had no clue that there were differences between the Master System and Game Gear versions (even though I've been playing Sonic my whole gaming career). Also, I personally think you'll have a great time with Sonic Chaos and Sonic Triple Trouble :3 Have fun, Johnny! :)
3:10 Yeah...this sentence is only valid for a few more months til March hits, then no more Wii Points can be added to the Wii Shop; so get these two along with Sonic Chaos while you can.
As a Sonic fan, I played every Sonic game I could get when I was a kid, including the Game Gear games. But I never completed a single one until recent history, when I finally finished Sonic Labyrinth. The platformer games were killer.
Man, 8-Bit Sonic 1 on the Master System was like one of the first games I ever played. It was built-in one of my Master System IIs. I owned Sonic 2 on the Master System as well. I think the reason why I never grew up with the Mega Drive games was probably because we were broke at the time, lol. The ending of Sonic 2 also scarred me for life when I was 8... I always missed the chaos emerald in Gimmick Mountain Zone Zone because I couldn't figure it out. 😂
This Sonic was the first I ever played at an alarming 1 year old! I had no idea it was a Gamegear game for years, it was always a Master System to me, and as far as I can tell most people in Europe and the U.K. P.S I still have the poster you got with it proudly hanging on my wall, 24 years and 6 House moves later. Fantastic games.
True Pride You went out of your way to hammer in that this review is for the handhelds only despite the fact that Johnny also discussed the console versions of the games in the video (which I pointed out), then you went and repeated yourself for like the fiftieth fucking time. As for your question, I already said its a game he hasn't covered yet. I think you have difficulty with comprehension
Skizzy Sage You unlock one for every 20 Emblems you collect. Adventure DX is also the only collection I'm aware of that has all twelve Game Gear Sonic games; Mega Collection Plus only has six.
You have four trigger words for sonic 2 8-bit? I'm sure most people only have one Antlion. I'm surprised you didn't mention that you don't get rings for antlion and the other bosses Final boss, somewhat acceptable Every boss, fuck them all, fuck em even more on the Game Gear,
Bridge Zone being sampled for Janet Jackson's song 'Together Again' blew my mind when it was first released. This Sonic 1 game was my first Sonic game and hearing how she sampled the song was my first geek out moment. In the 90s you were lucky to hear of any celebrity having anything to do with gaming.
Like here in the UK, Brazil had all of the Master System Sonic games (1, 2, Chaos, DRMBM, and Spinball); Brazil, most likely as a result of not having the Game Gear games, also got a Master System port of Sonic Blast too. In the case of Sonic Triple Trouble and Sonic Drift Racing (SD2), we Master System gamers have Sonic Retro's unofficial port section.
Sonic triple Trouble and Sonic Drift 2 were port for Master System in Brazil but this port is new and exclusive to master system portable(it's a plug and play) www.tectoy.com.br/master-system-portatil-amarelo-msp-30-jogos-tectoy/p/995020340825
Nice review of games people rarely seem to talk about. I do wish that I could get Sonic 2 for the Game Gear (or Master System) in one of these collections, but it seems like it's only available in the Game Cube version (and I only have Playstations) in the US. One of my BIGGEST challenges with Sonic 2 for the Game Gear (which apparently isn't the case for any other Sonic Game) was trying to complete Act 3, boss included, with no rings. No...rings...at...all throughout the entire act!! One hit and you are done! That's part of what made the first zone so incredibly hard for me. I love the Green Hills Zone Music...and apparently they used that music for the introduction to Sonic CD (and added lyrics to it too!). It's funny that as hard as this game was, I look back on it fondly. The music was great, the levels were interesting, and it was challenging...and thus satisfying...when I was finally able to beat it and save Tails!

DYING IN LAVA IS SUFFERING

I didn't know that, because i just saw a NES one time in my life and it was from a collector.
my childhood right there! remember playing these two games mainly at my grans house late at night when I was about 7 or 8 both for the master system. these two sonic games were most memorable in my eyes cause at the time I didn't realize there was another version of sonic 1 and 2, (genesis). happy memories.
Now that you've done these, you gotta do some Game Boy Mega Man games, too!
No... Mega Man X.
Or as I like to call it;
"The i series"
Megaman is my favourite Sonic character.
I don't understand, Is that a trigger word for you?
Dont forget about the Wonderswamp Games.
I'm so glad you're getting to the handheld games because even though they start off a little rocky, they get absolutely fantastic once we get to the GBA
the game gear wasn't the only sega handheld. the nomad was a thing.
As someone that owns one. Yes, it is literally a Genesis shoved into a 'small' container with a screen, a screen out port, and a second controller port.
And is a Vampire when it comes to batteries, even more then the Game Gear.
Salty and the pico as well
What is the Nomad?
it's a handheld megadrive. never got released here in europe.
8-bit Sonic 2 on the Sega Master System II was my first-ever video game. Plus I can finish the first level of Sonic 1 in 24 seconds.
Also thank you so much for this. I'm in agony at the moment from a car crash and this makes me feel so much better.
Corrections:
1) The hardware cannot handle loops. Later GG titles have loops, but they're scripted events with no physics involved.
2) The Sonic Team did not make these.
Sonic triple trouble’s loops have proper physics
10:04 Apparently Eggman saved Sonic because Eggman wanted to see his mech kill Sonic instead. I know it's dumb. Big fan btw.
Another fun marathon is starting. Can't wait to see your thoughts on the Sonic Advance series.
11:35 yet at the good ending, both are seen in the same manner, did they both die?
Still don't know why, but I always come back to this video for the line "I can't process all this blast" (4:29). I can't point exactly why, but I love that line.
"How do ya feel about, explosive devices..."
Sonic 06 or Tails' Adventure?
***** Tails' main weapons are bombs in that game.
My parents had a distraught, weeping child on their hands the day I failed to find all the emeralds in Sonic 2. The 8-bit music playing over the credits was like a corkscrew to my heart. WHY, SEGA?
My favorite part was his reaction to Tails' death.
"I can't process all this blast"
Lovely line.
“My Meat Shield!” 😂
I love the music of these two games. They are a treat to listen to. My favorite track from Sonic 1 is Bridge Zone and Sonic 2 I love Green Hills Zone.
“Did Tails. . . die?” Lmao
There was also the Sega Nomad, but that was apparently a "hybrid" system like the Switch.
"you can get the games on the Wii vertual console nowerdays"... Every night in my dreams...I see you...I feel you...rest in peace Wii shop.
The worst part is, they never released the MS versions anywhere else, same for Chaos and Blast. Which is a shame since those are obviously the best versions.

@@DiscontinuedChannel-z1t it's the internet. Lighten up.
3:10
Yeah...this sentence is only valid for a few more months til March hits, then no more Wii Points can be added to the Wii Shop; so get these two along with Sonic Chaos while you can.
It's been 3 years since this video released?!?
It's been 3 years since this video released...
Feels like yesterday...
“My meat shield!”

As a Sonic fan, I played every Sonic game I could get when I was a kid, including the Game Gear games. But I never completed a single one until recent history, when I finally finished Sonic Labyrinth. The platformer games were killer.
You better play sonic jam, for the game.com. i would send you one, bc you need to play the *WORST* sonic game.
you ... MONSTER
How's he even going to record that?
Jamal Mian He's gonna have to use an emulator. But I think he's gonna decide whether he covers that with a Straw poll.
Why Sonic Jam on the Game.com because Sonic Jam is a collection game with a little 3D Sonic game
Jesus Christ, this review is a goddamn nostalgia trip for me, I was raised by Master System Sonic. Seriously, it is a gem
Weird the Master System versions aren’t also on Sonic Origins Plus
Man, 8-Bit Sonic 1 on the Master System was like one of the first games I ever played. It was built-in one of my Master System IIs. I owned Sonic 2 on the Master System as well. I think the reason why I never grew up with the Mega Drive games was probably because we were broke at the time, lol.
The ending of Sonic 2 also scarred me for life when I was 8... I always missed the chaos emerald in Gimmick Mountain Zone Zone because I couldn't figure it out. 😂
"I can't process all this blast!"

But Johnny, what about Knuckles Chaotix?
True Pride It's a game he hasn't covered yet.
True Pride By that logic Sonic 3 is a handheld game because it was ported to the nintendo ds
True Pride He also talked about the console versions of the games anyway in the same fucking review so whats your point?
True Pride
You went out of your way to hammer in that this review is for the handhelds only despite the fact that Johnny also discussed the console versions of the games in the video (which I pointed out), then you went and repeated yourself for like the fiftieth fucking time.
As for your question, I already said its a game he hasn't covered yet. I think you have difficulty with comprehension
True Pride Why can't I suggest a review of a console Sonic game? Humor me
"how you fell about explosive devices" foreshadowing tails adventure review?
Kids when they realize what happened to tails : 11:27
Oohh.. great vid Johnny! During the Tails revelation, I almost cried! Thanks for showing these games.
Sonic marathon to go edition
Wheres my fries?
IDK what to say
I love your Sonic videos because I can really tell you get into and enjoy yourself.
Gotta thank SADX for introducing me to these games! They aren't great, but I had a lot of fun playing these games as a kid! ;3
+Busterman64 - Lmao, same here.
But how did i unlocked them actually?
Skizzy Sage you unlock them by getting emblems
Skizzy Sage You unlock one for every 20 Emblems you collect.
Adventure DX is also the only collection I'm aware of that has all twelve Game Gear Sonic games; Mega Collection Plus only has six.
AdmiralOctopus Can i get them in the hd version too?
I'm super excited for your sonic battle review. it was so fun, I hope it holds up to you when you go through it.
You have four trigger words for sonic 2 8-bit?
I'm sure most people only have one
Antlion.
I'm surprised you didn't mention that you don't get rings for antlion and the other bosses
Final boss, somewhat acceptable
Every boss, fuck them all, fuck em even more on the Game Gear,
he isn't that hard in the MS version, but in the GG version it can fuck off and die.
I hate the bosses so god dam much cept silver sonic he is ok
10:14Lmao john sound like hes introducing categories on a game show.Phenomenal video, im on the Sonic Rush hype train :)
sonic pocket adventure
I got you bud.
+SomecallmeJohnny don't hold on marine. really bash her.
+Pat D Smith Show no mercy we have all been there even Clement.
thats rush adveture, not pocket adventure.
*****
I beg your pardon?
Bridge Zone being sampled for Janet Jackson's song 'Together Again' blew my mind when it was first released. This Sonic 1 game was my first Sonic game and hearing how she sampled the song was my first geek out moment. In the 90s you were lucky to hear of any celebrity having anything to do with gaming.
4:25 I'm looking at you Iron fortress from sonic forces... :(
right down memory lane ^^ sonic 1 for the master system was my first sonic game but the music is still in my head nearly 30 years later.
I used to have a Master System II with Sonic 1 built in. Unfortunately, I lost it quite a while ago.
It also helps that the soundtrack to SMS Sonic 1 was composed Yuzo Koshiro.
I think Sonic 2 for Master was also released for Brazil.
Sonic triple Trouble and Sonic Drift 2 were port for Master System in Brazil but this port is new and exclusive to master system portable(it's a plug and play) www.tectoy.com.br/master-system-portatil-amarelo-msp-30-jogos-tectoy/p/995020340825
this version has tails adventure and ristar too
Can't wait for you to go over Sonic Chaos AKA Sonic & Tails!
I LOVED THAT GAME. :D
Definitely my favorite mobile/handheld Sonic game.
So when are you going to review Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed?
CaptainViewtiful98 never muhuha
CaptainViewtiful98 He already did, is just barely anyone even watched it.
Link please? I only remember him reviewing the first one.
Oh, I apologize, their names are similar so I forgot they are separate.
11:55 And people still call this f***boy useless! WHY?!
"Oh, look at the little motobugs!"
I don't know why, but I find it hilarious the way you said it.
