My neighbour planted three cute little sumacs beside her house. The bushes grew into little trees and I spent 15 years playing "Whack-a-Mole" with the rhizomes popping up all over my property. While beautiful in the wild, I believe their maintenance demands make them less suitable for a home garden.

We planted a sumac in a raised garden bed, surrounded by retaining wall block construction, 2 years ago. Beautiful plant that grows quite slowly, most likely because it is contained. I trim it to maintain it as an ornamental shrub. Just a week ago, I dug deep into the raised bed (this is raised 3 ft) to remove any spreading rhizomes, and then I prepped the soil for planting 8 dozen daffodils and narcissus for spring blooming.

Heed the warnings! Corral the sumac with bamboo shield is golden advice as sumac stops at nothing and will laugh all the way through property lines, grass paths and country lanes. Your A+ effort in removing and thinning the sumac is admired but I'm sure they'd root and rebound defiantly, vigorously even when heaped up in a waste pile.

I knew this day would come for you, and I felt terrible just thinking about it. =( If you leave ANY roots like you did, you're going to get new growth from it, and it will be many, many feet away from you expect it to be. I mentioned in another video of yours, that the one I planted in 2021 came back large and SO beautiful in 2022, and this past spring I realized it sent runners/rhizomes/roots out 6-8' out from the plant. It was heading into the grass, over and under a lot of perennials and TREES, and I had to dig up a huge part of a flagstone path in my quest to get rid of this plant, and redo the the path. I just found another sucker popping up the other day while cleaning things up for winter. This is a going to be a battle for a long time. Sigh..... (PS I second the idea of the bamboo shield in this spot, and even out in the dirt lands, or it will take over EVERYTHING out there, too) Good luck!

You are brave to add sumacs to your garden. They are so invasive. It took two years of professionals digging and grinding to finally get them out of the back of my lot -- and these were supposed to be dead trees. There is no such thing as a dead sumac! Then I dug out the rhizomes individually in back yard -- they looked like little Aliens. Finally, there is no sign of them -- but I am sure they are lurking. 👽

The problem now is where the roots were left will grow new plants. My parents dug up 2 sumacs and left root remnants and the following year they had to deal with like 100 new little plants popping up. Thankfully though if you keep up on the removal as they pop up they’ll disappear quickly. It’s nothing like the pain with invasive blackberries…

I saw sumac at a dairy farm in Indiana and I thought it was beautiful. I looked it up; it was not a good idea to plant in a home garden. But I think the way that Laura has it done here. It should be fine. And it is a beautiful shrub.

Laura you can also prune your sumac to take the form of a tree. Their so beautiful that way, rather than the wild shrub look .
But so invasive, i cant believe you transplanted some to another area 😁

My mom's last house was on a small lot with a steep slope, and the previous owners had planted sumac to help with erosion control. It did the job, but holy moly was it a beast if we didn't keep on top of pruning. It's a gorgeous plant, but even so... never again 😅

I have been so excited waiting to see this video. I have had a many year problem with Staghorn Sumac trees. Yes, they have great color. The former owners planted them as a wall about 12 feet from the fence and pool. Well... I have been fighting their ever encroachment. They have been banging now on the pool walls and for the last few years have been a constant battle. I literally cried when i saw you transplant some onto your new property. I mean tears and all. In 50 years when i am dead and gone, the only thing left of my work and beautiful gardens will be acres of SUMAC!

The Sumacs are beautiful for large, empty areas where nothing else grow. They are aggressively invasive and mine have taken over my garden border, my 50 ft. Thujas, my three 60 ft. Colorado Spruce evergreens. It will take a lot of effort to save the evergreens from the Sumacs. You must have a lot of time on your hands to annually control them, both above and underground. I no longer have the patience. They have to go, roots and all.

First off love your channel and all the inspiration I have received ❤! My heart hurts about the sumac. We live in the south where so much land is eaten up by kudzu, non native ivy, etc. unusable land, choked out native plants and animals. The only way to control is more poison, which is right into our streams and waterways. I feel many good hearted but short sighted and probably uniformed people can do a lot of damage way past when we are alive. Who is promising to keep it up after we are gone? It has broke my heart to get rid of many plants, and ferns I initially planted not truly understanding it. Still battling and this year they got into neighbors yard 😢. I did not know. Now I do. Their answer is poisoning all our fence lines heavily with roundup 🫣. I do hope it turns out better for you! ❤🙏🏻

Here in Connecticut, also zone 6, I battle a sumac, aka tree of heaven. It is a misnomer... it's hell. One plant sent rhizomes all the way down my side yard and now its poking up in the front beds too. Unless you are aiming for long term job security, I'd take them out, regardless of how deceptively pretty they can be at times.
PS That said, I am usually awed by your wisdom and design flair, but am now tempted to offer you a bittersweet cutting and some morning glory (aka bindweed) seeds from my yard! 😂😘
