- Here she is singing from Riccardo Broschi "Son Qual Nave". The things she can do with her voice are out of this world almost imposible for the human voice but not imposible for Bartoli.
For those who object to her facial expressions, they forget that she is not singing for a camera but for venues that seat between 3,000 and 5,000 people. None of those people would see these expressions as distracting. If you have ever sat in the upper balcony of an opera house you know that delicate facial expressions have absolutely no impact whatsoever. Her mastery of the form here is beyond belief. Even Horne at her best never achieved this level of perfection in the Baroque repertoire.
@Wilson Watt I'm pretty sure her fans and anyone who has any sense won't care if she sings standing on her head if she can sing like that.
I love her facial expressions.
To sing with such control requires vocal athleticism on a par with a Tiger Woods or Mohammed Ali and to think that she has performed at this level far longer than either of them managed. Unusual facial expressions are just part and parcel of her achieving such perfection. Who cares?

It’s mind-blowing that someone actually wrote this and even more unbelievable that someone crushed it. What a prodigious woman.
If there were a voice competition at the Olympics, she would have a chest full of gold medals. Her voice is absolutely gymnastic.
I can do crazier things with my voice, including holding notes that long (in straight tone and higher octaves). I have more range as well, including subaudible low notes - Check insta @adosburg

I was lucky enough to attend this concert. The recording conveys her amazing coloratura but not the staggering dynamic range of the opening phrase of the aria in a large concert hall and all on a single breath. The second time she laughed was when a member of the audience shouted "encore". One of the many nice things about her is that enjoys her performance as much as the audience. Truly she is La Phenomena!

its a really big breath!
Years of Training and Practice. Lots and LOTS of Practice. Hours of it weekly for multiple years. Uncountable numbers of hours spent in a small practice room doing nothing but sustained scales and runs. Learning to use the diaphragm for massive amounts of support rather than singing from the upper chest like untrained vocalists tend to do. Learning projection techniques, sustained breathing techniques that rival (and sometimes surpass) those of Olympic swimmers. Decades, starting at a very early age, spent training and perfecting technique and range and expressiveness.
I trained as an Operatic Coloratura myself, back during my teens and 20s. I know exactly what sort of fresh hell she went through to develop that level of skill, and its impressive. It helps that she's naturally talented and has a massive 3 1/2 to 4 octave range.
lung capacity + diaphragm. you have to train to use them together efficiently.
I think perhaps she is both the greatest coloratura and the greatest mezzo-soprano.
One thing I love about Cecilia is her appreciation for the baroque music --and her dedication to advocacy and education for the controversial Castrato arts. She is the reason why we know Faranelli and others.

When you sing you squeeze your abs to create breath pressure/support. Some opera singers prefer wearing corsets because it helps them create that breath pressure
@@laurenbrock5056 I’ve seen scientific research videos that proved the opposite was required. Space is needed by the upper body for the breath to linger longer, and a corset would be too restrictive. However, she’s probably wearing a fairly loose and elastic one,

I have watched the first 45 seconds of this dozens of times on repeat, and each time I do I feel like I am witnessing an other-dimensional level of talent. She is the definition of a vocal musical treasure.
My voice teacher studied with Maurice Allard, and he would have his students try to hold a note for a minute, going crescendo and piano, and the student who won was treated to a fine dinner. For teenagers, this was a big treat. He used all kinds of motivation and encouragement with his young students, making it fun. I have a feeling that this woman, if she decides to teach, would also be a lot of fun.

I attended a concert she gave in Rome that was simply astounding. Certainly the best performance of anything that I have ever attended. She did SIX encores.

One of the best things about her performances are her facial expressions. They are *chefs kiss* on point.
As someone who has sung for 50 years in musical theater, opera, symphonic choruses, etc, what Cecilia Bartoli does in this video is super human. It truly is miraculous. On some level I understand the technical level of what she is doing but the fact that she pulls it off so effortlessly is proof that there's a God.

@@celibidache1000 No it is correct. My teacher even told me that. Once of course you are using the correct technique of the inner mask or some people call it an italian smile ..but its the inner muscles to control the muscles in the larnx and through its like a neurological thing . My teacher would let me do the exercises for it ..but she said for arias i had to learn the mask without showing it not because of sound but because you would never get hired making faces like that. Its a trade off. It its done RIGHT its EXACTLY how you get the best sound. Obv though just making weird faces like that alone doesn't help. But its a pity most singers are taught these are just bad habits. Its absolutely correct and THIS IS GREAT SOUND!

If you think that Bartoli sounds great, that is your taste, and I can say nothing about it, but, from a acoustical and anatomical point of view, her technique is terribly flawed.

Such wailings and gnashing of teeth below about what is obviously a post concert encore which by tradition is always a light and fun moment. Not to be taken seriously and certainly not deserving of some of the clueless comments posted here. It's to Cecilia Bartoli's credit and technique that she still had the energy to sing such a demanding piece. I enjoyed it enormously, Thank you.
To those complaining about Cecilia Bartoli is not the best Mezzo Soprano for you. Just air, and noises.
I just read on Wikipedia that Paula Abdul as of 06/07/2024 listed herself as having the range of Mezzo-Soprano since 1987, having trained with a couple of voice coaches paid from her savings account. So talented is Paula she obtained this recognition and status in a mere 1 year of training.
Now to Cecilia, truly Such a beautiful gift to her audience and all the rest of us who will only ever be able to appreciate her via internet platforms.

Everyone has their favorite (especially soprano vs mezzo, etc), however the emotion she evokes in me when she sings puts her on the highest level for me. The lightness and purity in her higher notes are like a bird on a tree singing naturally. I love her.

Foxie Kool I had a teacher that told me that a singer is not to "look" beautiful over stage since we are not models, we are singers and need to incur on different expressions for different purposes as you explained. This lady is the graphic explanation of that. She is amazing.
