I toured through France on a 49 cc moped. The hills were marked with one, two, or three carats to indicate the percentage of grade. In practice, one carat meant full throttle, two carats meant full throttle plus pedal assist, and three carats meant get off and push.

The eBikes are less than half the weight of a motorcycle. Different creature. For me pushing on in years, having loved bikes all my life, they get you back out in the air. If you have a short city-based commute they are perfect. I have had a couple at this point. If you are getting the likes of this be sure to get a second battery when you buy. They tend to be half the cost of a replacement when you buy later. And you will need to get another one because they tend to wear down easily. Generally, the cells used internally are 2600mAhr. Not usually the best. So if you have 2, a better plan for replacing one further down the road is to rebuild the cells with, say, 3500mAhr ones. That's cost effective and is not too hard if you know what you are doing. With regard to general longevity we kinda know how it goes. Tyres will go from 3000-5000 miles. Some of the parts are standard bicycle replacement gear - brakes, levels, gears, chainwheel, saddles etc. Often you can upgrade stuff with better than the original factory fitted. Also, if you still have the bike 5 yrs on, there is the prospect of far better and cheaper replacement batteries becoming available as technology improves. But so far, the battery tends to be the central issue. If you like traditional bikes, these will likely excite you. If you are into motorbikes, probably not.

I converted my Fatbike to a (moped) E-Bike with a 750W kit from Bafang (and a few additional bits) it comes with a throttle attachment, so far clocked up 2500kms to work and back mostly but plenty in the forests and tracks to. Top speed 50kmh but that's with pedaling and top setting assist (9 assist levels), moped only mode will do 25kmh. cost me $2k NZD way cheaper than any e-bikes on the market. The funniest thing is is comes with a 250W sticker to put over the 750W name plate to make it legal on NZ roads ;o)

One thing to clarify a little on the speed limit; the EU regulation only requires the motor to stop assisting at 25km/h, it's not max legal speed for the bike. You're free to go as fast as you can if you keep pedaling it all by yourself.
As for the bike itself, I'm not a fan of these hybrids that are not a good bicycle nor a good moped. A regular bicycle is in itself a really great vehicle, and if more people had electric motors in theirs, I think more people would start motorcycling as well.

Back in the day the 50cc Moped was very popular as it could be ridden at 16 years of age on the road. They had to be pedalled up hills as the engine could not do it alone (yes they had peddles hence Moped) and 30mph was a dream for most of them. All the rules that applied to full motorcycles applied to them as well but there was no CBT :) We were actually taught in school at 14yrs old to ride them.

I had a honda mt5 in 1996 and I new around 20 friends with mopeds often 8 of us out riding together it was a great laugh. Most went around 35mph.

Its an interesting video, I use an e-bike, but I got it to help me get walking again after serious illness. Its helped and I hope to get a "normal" motorcycle again next year!
Legality wise, the bike you have cannot be used on UK roads, as it has a throttle. The requirements are 250w motor, walking mode throttle only (3mph) and motor only assists peddling up to 15.5mph.
The bike you have is fine off road, on private land, but cannot be used legally on a public road, or cycle path.
So i'm a big fan of ebikes, as one has very much helped me build up my strength again, but we have to stick by the law. I've seen ebikes on the road clearly unrestricted flying along at 40mph, clearly something has to be done as this will affect the law abiding folks in the long run.

I see these bikes as a lot more practical than the actual electric motorcycles which are at this moment stupidly expensive for the range and performance they have compared to a normal bike . We've had an electric assist bike for close to 10 years, had the motor replaced on warranty after 2 years I think but other than that just basic bicycle stuff - chain, tires, brakes, sprockets. I don't think I've ever really noticed any degradation of the battery. We never run it completely empty which is the biggest wear from what I've understood. It's a bicycle with permanent downwind! i've considered a proper e-moped (those limited to 45 km/h) but my biggest issue with them is that you'r not allowed to be on the bikelanes (in Sweden) on the side of the road but are supposed to be on the road together with cars and motorcycles. Benefit would be putting on a topbox when going groceryshopping etc which isn't really feasible with a bicycle - they get really wobbly when topheavy...

I'm now commuting the 6 miles to work and my car has become a roadside ornament tbh and maybe its time to start doing without 🤔

It's worth noting for anyone thinking of buying one of these. Not only is the throttle illegal, that model is completely illegal as an ebike to use in any public place...on or off road. A legal ebike has to be pedal assist only (not self propelled), can only assist up to 15.5mph, and have a max motor power output of 25 watts. As this bike has a 500w motor, and is self propelled, it has to be registered, taxed, MOTd, and insured. You also need a licence to ride it. It basically is a moped.

A pedal assist hybrid bicycle with normal size wheels would give a nicer/safer ride and be more efficient. An on/off switch is more useful than a throttle for slow speed control and a cadence sensor is better than a torque sensor unless you're prepared to put in more effort. A 750/1000w motor would be needed to compete with a moped and a massive battery for useful range. The batteries last about 10 years and can be rebuilt, unlike human legs, use it or lose it!

To be pedantic, instead of it being called a "pedal-assisted bike" I think it should it be referred to as a "pedal-assisted electric bike" or an "electric-assisted bicycle", this is where ambiguity in the law could come into it.
In the late 1940s and through the 1950s, it was not uncommon to see petrol-engined assisted bicycles, these had to conform to most laws of the moped which was slightly less than the motorcycle requiring a minimum of a provisional licence and L plates or a full car driver's licence, vehicle duty, insurance, and number plate all of which in my opinion should be required on all road going vehicles including a bicycle today.

I personally am no lover of beaurocracy, I personally take into consideration do I think they will save a life and its a very difficult question to answer.
Cyclists tend to wear the minimum of safety gear even though the're going along at maybe 40mph in a pack and many times not. I understand why cyclists want to wear the minimum of safety gear but a haed hitting a solid object at 15mph or less let along 40mph can be fatal.
I am sure there will be many truck drivers oppossed to cameras covering blind spots along the length of a truck especially when turning left but I personally support this 100% as in this case it is others lives at risk, i.e. school kids though most go to school in SUVs these days and hippy girls on their bikes with baskets on the front or a child on the back.

As a pedestrian they are a true menace as they ride their deregulated (40KPH) scooters at full speed on the pavement beeping their extra loud horns if you get in their way. I think it is more cost effective to convert an old mountain bike to electric than it is to buy new, but only if you already have a bike. I put a befang crank motor on mine and upgraded the front brakes to disc and it made a good commuter bike. I would just charge while at work and had no range issues.
That said, until they increase the power density and charging speed of the batteries it won't replace a cycle.

Don't you need a number plate, tax, insurance and a helmet to use it on the road? Basically all the stuff you need with a moped. The Type Approval plate will be all the police are interested in. I think the worst aspect of getting pulled on the road would be Driving with no insurance which would be legally the same as driving a car without insurance i.e. points, fine, big jump in car, motorcycle insurance premiums.

Saying no need for tax or insurance is a benefit doesn't really work.
If you want one of those, you might also quite happily ride a motorcycle with no tax or MOT. Either way you're breaking the law.
Riding them on footpaths is way worse than the road though. The forest owners will have increasingly high repair costs for the footpaths. As well as damage to the vegetation. Mountain bikes cause some damage, now double the weight, and triple the speed, and that rate of damage rises quickly.
I dont know that I think these need be totally illegal. But the current law certainly needs adjusting if to allow for them. Especially as people will always abuse the law anyway.

Miss Saffron, the bike is totally illegal to use on the roads in the UK and EU so officially you shouldn't be recommending it for road use. You could try registering it as a moped but it wouldn't meet construction and use regulations and the law isn't going to change, I know this because I work in the industry. By 2030 all new bikes up to 125cc will be illegal so only electric with be available. Assuming that you will be a life long biker sometime before 2040 you'll be riding an electric motorcycle. You thought travelling at night was scary just wait when range anxiety hits you. A brave new world awaits!!

On the seat tube just behind where it says Mi Pro, if you follow the line down from where the shock mounting is. the box section (joining the main frame to the rear of the bike) is welded (from what I can see on my screen) at a guess 10mm from the shock mount, at the bottom it is pretty much central to the tube. That would be the first thing that would stand out to my engineering brain upon first seeing it. Carry on the great content and I'd love to see more electric bike reviews, as I have concerns about the disposal of the used batteries.
