The shot at 3:16 is burned into my memory. After they'd been written off, MVDP pulling on the front, blasting by the camera, Trek rider on last wheel bobbing and weaving just to hang on.
Full agree. I keep coming back to this one. I watched this at my aunt's birthday party, they always have cycling on in the background during their birthdays as any sunday in april is usually something big on the calendar, and my uncle's birthday is during the Tour de France. Usually, it's just 'there' and all of us casual cycling fans glance at the scree every now and then, but this race was completely different. It was the only time I can remember where we were are glued to the screen all the way until the end.
@@draloalo there's always someone who comes along to say "nah'. Consensus would suggest this was either THE greatest one day race win ever, or very very close to being so.
@@draloalo This is one of those comments where you wish that the negative likes still show up. OF COURSE Alaphillipe and Fuglsang fucked up. But that has nothing to do with the incredible performance which is being showed here..
At the time I thought it was the best bike race final I had ever seen and that hasn't changed. The total confusion towards the end for all those who rode and watched the race contributed to the most amazing finish. It was also the first time we could enjoy the different strategy of a new generation of world class road cyclists - MvdP, WvA and the Pog - who are not afraid to just go for it without being too concerned with conserving energy for the final few kms.
Absolutely love that very moment when the crowd understands that MVDP can actually do it and to see those 5 seconds when the spectators wait in crazy hope before they all burst out of joy in total frenzy. It is like they get a gift of pure irrational glee. Even the people located at the end of the road, who couldn't see the finish, go totally crazy. And as for MVDP... he comes back like an asteroid with such will and speed. Wonderful to see.
Same here, since 1980 or so. It was rare in 2019. But in 2023 we have seen especially MvdP do things that are pretty rare in cycling history. 2021 Tirreno....the attack with some food in has hand just went from pole position of that group and they just could never catch him. Ronde van Vlaanderen too. This years Milan San Remo taking on a group of three which are all considered worlds best time trialists and they can not get even a second back on him in stead losing time. And of course the WC that to my mind was better than the win in Amster Gold '19.
Oh my goodness! Goosebumps and fast heartbeats! Thanks for making this video! I have seen a shorter version of this, but this tells the whole story better to demonstrate why this comeback is so so so credible!!
Omg,this is epic, i only got into cycling a few years ago and mvdp as quickly become my fav. Was in glasgow this year to see him win the worlds, falling, breaking his shoes and winning by the margin he did possibly shades this, (maybe because i wss also there) either way id hsve loved to gave been watching the show when this was on. X
Remember seeing this and not believing what i was witnessing. That effort MvdP put in at the last km was the most insane I ever watched in the last 25 yrs in cycling. At 6 km remaining the commentators had even written him off.
The most incredible and unbelievable fact is when they just had 2.3 km -- and MvdP was in the 3rd group, about 50 (!) seconds behind the leaders !!! Tomorrow on race day for "Amstel 2024" it will be a different game I am sure. Because now -- 5 years and 6 Monuments and 1 Worldchampionship and many other great victories later, he is the big favorite !
It was exactly the same for me. Those white shorts stood out. Even in long shots through the trees, you could make him out up at the front, pulling hard.
5 years after. After watching today’s Amstel, Chapeu to Pidcock (2024). Everyone was talking smack at mvdp finishing 22nd. Weeks after winnng Flanders and Roubaix. People forgot that This. This is still unbelievable.
Many riders from many teams, have had the "go for it" mindset. And it has made cycling INCREDIBLY interesting to watch..... I cannot tell you how much I love watching the drama it creates. WVA, MVDP, POG, JONAS, there was that rider from Cirrus, who didn't quite make it but it was a hell of a finish, drama till the end, and you know everyone was rooting for him, it's been amazing. Is it the best strategy, no probably not, you will fail, and fail often. But you will be remembered when it creates the drama. But you will create a moment in history to remember. No you may not win, but everyone will remember how amazing YOU made that race, and you WILL turn heads your way. Because you WILL win it, at some point. You will play your cards right eventually.
Snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. There have been plenty of races where he throws the dice, goes all in. Sometimes it doesn't pay of but when it does he created a highlight reel we will talk about for ever. How legends are made.
I remember watching that when i had accidentally seen the result. I honestly thought it was a mistake as i was watching it unfold, as i was thinking no way can he win from there. Amazing stuff.
looking back at this now, with what Matthieu has accomplished since then. Just freaking insane!!! what a rider, including double worldchampion road racing and cyclecross in the same year!!!
@@benji1681 Consistency? Compare their results over their careers. MVDP has double the amount of cyclocross victories compared to WVA, 5 WCs vs. 3, 4 monuments vs.1, while WVA has almost double the amount of race days.
How about WVA winning the queen stage, a TT, the Champs Elysees sprint AND the green jersey in a tour where he also did loads of domestique work? They both won stages and wore yellow, but Wout dropping the world's strongest peloton and soloing to victory IN YELLOW... bonkers. Having said all that, I am on team MvdP when they go head to head, I just love his style and explosiveness.
Have you watched last years TDF ? WVA won on every type of stage and did so many breakaways. VDP won more prestigious races, but he can also have off days, WVA is very consistent
I'm not sure that he is, but regardless of this ultra dominant spring season by MvdP, what WvA did at the TdF last year was simply unprecedented. No rider should be this good in all conditions and stage types. I'm a big MvdP fan, but regardless, there's not many sportsmen I respect more than WvA.
No it wasnt the first time he shocked the road cycling world. In the Tour of Flanders 2019 he broke his front wheel and crashed at 60k to go, but still became 4th. But the Amstel Gold Race is a very good second time MvdP shocked the road cycling world ;)
I keep watching this every now and then. The commentary is almost as beautiful as the victory.
The shot at 3:16 is burned into my memory. After they'd been written off, MVDP pulling on the front, blasting by the camera, Trek rider on last wheel bobbing and weaving just to hang on.
@@josephbikes Agreed. And that last rider looks like Bauke Mollema; it's certainly his bobbing style.

One of the best! Insane ride
