  • This is the first part of my Good & Bad Heavy Metal Guitars series. After buying, selling and fixing tons of guitars for more than 20 years, I discuss what I consider to be good and bad heavy metal guitars.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Do you like my guitar playing?
    Check out MY ORIGINAL METAL SONG: • Monster Heavy Metal Gu...
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
    I play and talk about the qualities/flaws of the following good guitars (I use a Line 6 Spider III amp for all my tests):
    1. Jackson King V KV2 (made in the USA) with Seymour Duncan pickups and original Floyd Rose tremolo
    2. Carvin V220 (made in the USA) with original Floyd Rose & Carvin C22 pickups
    3. ESP MII (made in Japan) with original Floyd Rose tremolo and EMG 81 pickups
    4. B.C. Rich Wartribe Warlock (made in Korea) with Kahler Hybrid Tremolo and EMG pickups
    5. Ibanez Roadstar (made in Japan) with Edge tremolo and Ibanez pickups
    6. Charvel Model 4 (made in Japan) with Kahler 2300 tremolo and Jackson pickups
    7. ESP Horizon (made in Japan) with Seymour Duncan pickups
    I talk about four poorly crafted guitars I briefly owned:
    1. Gibson Explorer 84 Reissue (made in the USA) with Tune-o-matic bridge and EMG pickups
    2. B.C. Rich Mockingbird ST (made in Korea) with Rockfield pickups and Floyd Rose tremolo
    3. Gibson Shred-X Explorer (made in the USA) with Kahler tremolo and EMG pickups
    4. Moser SRiT (made in Korea) with licensed Floyd Rose tremolo and generic pickups
    Then I discuss the following topics among others:
    1. Some standard Dean guitars come with only one brand name pickup (Seymour Duncan bridge) and a licensed Floyd Rose tremolo (not the original). For a lower price, you can get a Schecter Hellraiser with two active EMGs and an original Floyd. For about the same price of a Dean Razorback, you can also get a custom Carvin made in the USA with your own specs such as color, wood, body, frets and much more. Alternately, for just a bit more than some standard Deans, you can get a top-notch Ibanez S2170SE. It comes with the superior ZR tremolo and three DiMarzio pickups.
    2. Another drawback I see with these Dimebag Deans (and even my Kerry King B.C. Rich) is the signature model concept. Unless you just record or play at home like me, I don't recommend any signature model as you might be seen as a copycat of someone. I don't mean to say I'm against all signature guitars. I just prefer the ones that look more generic. For example, the LTD JH-600 version without Slayer's eagle inlays looks more generic although it's still Jeff Hanneman's model.
    3. The Fender Stratocaster is an excellent guitar for blues, jazz and soft rock but most models are not good for heavy metal. The single-coil pickups don't have enough output for a crunchy metal sound, and the non-locking tremolo system has horrendous tuning stability.
    4. Contrary to popular belief, a guitar made in the USA is NOT ALWAYS BETTER than a guitar made in Korea or Japan.
    5. Price MAY NOT indicate quality. A few months after buying my ESP, I played the LTD JH-600, and it was BETTER than my ESP. This Korean version of the ESP had a smoother neck, less fret buzz and amazing sound all for less than half the price.
    6. Don't buy an average guitar to install expensive pickups later because: (1) It may not be cost-effective; (2) The pickup may not retrofit the cavity; (3) A guitar sound is DEEPLY AFFECTED by the wood and bridge's metal type. You have no guarantee the guitar will sound good. For example, a new set of active EMGs plus professional installation cost almost half the price of, let's say, a new Jackson Dinky with active EMGs and a fixed bridge. Passive pickups cost less and are easier to install. Either way, along with cost, any extra routing or drilling may be irreversible in terms of rematching certain guitar finishes.
    7. If you want a tremolo, stick with the original Floyd Rose made by Schaller or Ibanez's ZR and Edge Pro tremolos. These three systems have unbeatable tuning stability. Kahler is also a good option but it goes out of tune with bends.
    8. Alder is my favorite wood for heavy metal. It's light in weight and sounds extremely powerful.
    I conclude my video series with these recommendations:
    . B.C. Rich Deluxe Jr. V with original Floyd Rose and active EMG pickups
    . Music Man Axis SuperSport HH with fixed bridge and DiMarzio pickups
    . Charvel San Dimas Style 1 2H wih original Floyd Rose and Seymour Duncan pickups

    What ive found is that anything with a tune-o-matic (high bridge) is good for rhythm type stuff not so good for fast leads, but when it comes to accuracy in tremolo, alt and sweep picking hardtails and floyd roses WILL make things 10 times easier.

    To be honest wood plays very little in tone for solid body electric guitars. pick ups and volume on a good amp is the majority of tone. Fingers come first

    • @guitaroidman524
      @guitaroidman524 9 років тому +1

      Are you stupid? Wood plays one of the main roles

    • @kutchemes
      @kutchemes 9 років тому +16

      guitaroidman524 Wood matters but even different pick's effect much more than wood.

    • @disillusioned165
      @disillusioned165 9 років тому +2

      guitaroidman524 im not going to say that wood doesnt make a difference in a solid body, but i think pickups, scale length, bridge material, nut material, fret material, pot and tone caps and value if any, string gauge, and even the action can have more effect on tone. i wouldnt call it one of the main roles, but im not going to say id be ok with a plywood body either. i think it makes a huge difference in the feel of the guitar though which is important.

    • @piprnic1
      @piprnic1 9 років тому +13

      guitaroidman524 Wood has nothing to do with electric guitars. The pickups are magnetic and don't hear the resonation of the tone woods. Sorry, that's scientific fact.

    Kind of disappointing to know that an Explorer 1984 reissue is a bad guitar when you own one 😕 I find it really good in fact ! ...Or maybe it's because I own the Epiphone model, not the Gibson one mentionned in the video. I've always heard that Epiphone was much better than Gibson now 😄

    • @FaimlyGuyFan
      @FaimlyGuyFan 9 років тому +1

      I have to disagree Gibson is better quality then Epiphone, but Gibson are not worth a quarty of the price they go for, you can a much better guitar for a cheaper.

    • @PlaidBoy64
      @PlaidBoy64 9 років тому +1

      ***** Epiphones used to be of much higher quality than Gibsons. Know your facts, dude.

    • @m2karateman
      @m2karateman 9 років тому +1

      TheYoungFrogMan what was true once upon a time is not necessarily true now. That said, there are some Epis that seem to be better made than their Gibson counterparts. No different than it was with the early 80's Squire Strats vs. the Fenders from that era. The Squires were 'cheaper' alternatives, but in reality had better build quality.

    • @matthewhowell4060
      @matthewhowell4060 9 років тому +1

      ***** I don't know if the Epiphone is necessarily better than the Gibson but you are probably much more tolerant of any issues since you paid so much less for the Epiphone.

      Jacob does guitars I honestly really like line 6 amps. i have a line 6 120w Spider IV combo and its a honestly a really good all around amp for everything. i dont understand the hate line 6 gets.

    • @TheCrimsonIdol987
      @TheCrimsonIdol987 6 років тому

      Generally the sound is thin for the Spider series, it doesn't really have a nice punchy mid range, a deep bottom, and detailed highs. Everything seems too fizzy, not crunchy. Trust me, place them up against something like the Orange Micro Dark and the Joyo Zombie, and the Spiders lack serious punch.
      It gets even worse when you compare them to tube amps, as there are comparatively priced tube amps.
      Now if you're talking about the Line 6 Helix or Line 6's Helix Native Software, that's another matter as the amp simulation actually sounds great. It's like Line 6 decided to stop fucking around. Overall Line 6 makes decent stuff, but the Spider series just sounds wrong to me.

      Sorry shredder pricks but Les Paul have bigger tone than any of these guitars,And Dimarzio superdistortion are best pickups ever.

    • @rimrizzo5364
      @rimrizzo5364 10 років тому +1

      Brady Hiles Nah he's kind of right in a way. I mean ever listen to In Flames their guitarist use les pauls and other Gibson products and they have a fat ass heavy tone. They do put emgs in some of them but the biggest thing when it comes to tone is the wood of the guitar. These guitars do sound good but they sound thin, though thicker strings and raising the action on the guitar might help that. Other great guitars for a heavy sound are the Esps from the 80's that are worth like $3000 now, or an Ibanez rg 550 from the same era, mid 80's to early 90's along with the Ibanez 575. They go around 500-700 on ebay. Now if you have thousand of dollars to spend for a heavy sound nothing is better than a caparison or suhr guitars.

    Thank you for the nice comment. I posted on my main channel page a metal song I wrote and recorded. If you want to check it out, it's the main video on my channel page. You can also access the link in the Video Responses section of this page.

    Man you are a beast. I don't even care about those guitars but your playing is amazing. Congrats

    Great video. Statements that actually describe facts rather than platitudes! Willingness to criticize real issues. I am guessing the "fretting out" is related to the radius of the neck; that is something most guitar review neglect to discuss. Great shredding too! It is good to see that you can play much cleaner and faster on some guitars than others! That is something I notice about my own playing as well (although I cannot keep up with you on shredding speed!)

    @rolfeder I play metal on my mexi-strat because it's playability is the incredible. Add a carvin C22B in the bridge and a carvin AP11-2 in the neck and it will hang with any metal guitar.

    Hey man, are you still active? Your videos were one of the best back then.

    Note that if you changed your strings and that the new strings have a different thickness compared to the old ones, adjusting the springs may not be enough. You may have to add or remove a spring.

    @sbtrackrunner yes because when the lock is tightened the string moves a little bit in the nut slot detuning it a little bit

    I would!
    I use an ESP LTD M-53.
    I'm also starting out. This guitar only has 2 control knobs (volume and tone) so you wont get mixed up easily. I got mine at musicians friend so it came with clear toned strings. The pickups are great but the whammy is a tiny bit hard to use (not that much).
