      As long as ye don't go yanking about on the trem and upgrade the pups to high output stacked humbuckers Ywngie manages just fine. He was talking about stock Strats. Ywngie's Strats are not stock standard Strats.

  • @dmometalguitar

    It's hard to say. A guy like Yngwie Malmsteen uses single-coil DiMarzios on his Strat, and he gets a really powerful sound. Just because single-coils won't give you a fully overdriven sound, it doesn't mean you can't get a powerful sound. Think of Eddie Van Halen - on the last two or three Van Halen albums, he didn't use full distortion on his humbucker and/or single-coils but still got a pretty strong and thick sound. It depends on your playing, amplifier, effects and other factors..

    Good point on what you said about Dean and BC Rich signatures. But if somebody plays a regular Dean ML, they usually get pegged with playing a "Dimebag Darrell" guitar. Just because he made them so popular.

    I will have to disagree with Fenders not being good for metal. They can be good for metal if you outfit them with some Hot Rails or some humbuckers. I've been digging single coils for lead lines in metal. They have a really clear and bright sound that's perfect for helping the lead lines cut through.
    The key is experimentation. Generally, humbuckers at least for metal.

    I got a Dimebag Razorback V second hand for under £350, and I just think it is amazing. The DimeTime in the neck had a great blues sound and the Dimebucker sounds pretty good

    Actually, my favorite guitar is the Jackson King V. But Carvin does deserve total respect. Where the hell on earth you're going to find a company that will build you a high quality custom guitar for $1,150 dollars? That's what I paid for my V220!

    when you say neck thru, I gess you mean a set neck.
    I think a real neck thru is a neck that goes all the way down to the bottom of the guitar and the body is actually two parts glued on each side of the neck like an old Aria pro II rs x70 .
    nice video by the way.

    Negative.
    About 1.5 yrs ago, a guy named R.M. Mottola (google him) did a study for American Lutherie (issue 91). using a spectrometer and a few other tests, it was determined that bolt on had a (slightly) longer sustain and that the human ear couldnt percieve the difference in sustain anyway.
    That said, the major reason for the difference in sustain in guitars is the build quality and woods used, not the type of construction (assuming its constructed well) .

    Lol -5. People are stupid man. Fender guitars are some of the best-made guitars on the planet. Their factory pickups aren't made for metal but if you know how to change a pickup, a HSS Strat with an EMG through a Fender Metalhead stack will give you crushing tone and your guitar won't suck in 2 years unlike some of the Dimebag Models that they're force feeding to spoiled 14 year olds (the ones who thumbs down'd you)

    @alconsirra you kinda contradicted yourself, you care about the feel and sound... but said gibsons / prs is no good for metal because of their scale length. thats not always true, most 22 fret guitars have a 24 3/4 scale... 24 fret guitars have a 25 1/2 scale... esentialy their are almost exactly the same for the first 19 frets.

    That's exactly the point I mention on the video. Dave's V model looks more generic, so you don't assimilate it immediately to a particular artist. My Jackson King V KV2 is also similar to Dave's original King V; but nevertheless, it doesn't indicate imitation. But the Dean Razorback or Dean Dime screams Dimebag Darrell -- that's his guitar shape, and the assimilation is immediate. This is terrible for any band.

  • @dmometalguitar
    @dmometalguitar  15 років тому

    The tuning issue is just one of the problems. This guitar is terrible overall. They use an EMG commonly used for neck pickup as the bridge one, and I didn't like the sound at all. Plus, that guitar's weight was so heavy that I couldn't play it for more than one hour without hurting my back. Stay away from it.

    If you read the slide carefully, I didn't say ALL Fenders - I said MOST Fenders. And yes, I'm a huge Malmsteen fan, and he does get a brutal sound on his model. But most models out there are not good for metal, mainly the standard ones.

    So, here is a question to everyone... I'm in love with the explorer body sytle (not the pointy, sharpened stuff), just the old school rounded flat look. I'm looking at the '84 Epiphone EXP with the EMG's, and a Dean Z Straight Six / Soul Z (EMG). Anyone have any input or suggestions? Ideally I'd love a mid 90's ESP EX model, that still had the hockey stick head. But those are rare and extremely pricey!

  • @scottn3134
    @scottn3134 9 років тому

    What about some of the budget guitars like the new Jackson Dinky JS32? I currently have a Jackson Performer PS4 and an ESP LTD MH50 (which does have fret issues). On the ESP I have to have the neck bowed and action fairly high to avoid the low E fret buzz and deadness on the first few frets. Still very playable thought. Anyway, thinking of getting the Dinky JS32 for the money.
    Oh, I had a Charvel Model 4 years ago and the pickups were way too loud. It played well, I just didn't care for the 22 fret neck or Khaler Tremelo.

    If the neck can be set up the frets are OK,
    The guitar can be hot rodded at a pretty good price.
    I mean, if your a bedroom jammer mostly, I'd start strat style,
    Take it apart and chk it out the worst is ya might have to get help
    If ya want to paint, just sand down till ya get that polli off, hang it up, choose your
    Color cans/an auto body it all works, and a pickup 50 to 65. Its the best experience
    If you never done it,

  • @Mobi666

    Well I own 2 import Razorbacks, and I absolutely love them. The balance of the body is perfect when playing live. Agree the neck pickup sucks, but I have no problems with the licensed floyd rose, and I do use it for divebombs & squeals. It's all about guitar setup. When you buy (any) guitar you should give it a good setup to your playing style. Some people want very low action, some don't. Also I never did pay the official MSRP price for my 2 guitars.

  • @GuitarnScythes
    @GuitarnScythes 14 років тому

    Dean and Gibson are probably my least favourite guitar brands. Gibson just uses their name to make the guitar fucking expensive, and Dean put's their DIME signature on every guitar to add an extra 300$ on the pricetag. I've also had several quality issues with Gibson, their Les Paul guitar too bulky and they have horrible fret acces. And well the Dean guitars don't appeal to me, they're trying way too hard to look 'metal'.

  • @GuitarnScythes
    @GuitarnScythes 15 років тому

    I've actually know someone with a Shred X explorer and he didn't like it as well.
    He let me play it, and I wasn't impressed. The tuning was ridiculous and I didn't know what Gibson was smoking when they decided to not add the locking nuts and go for locking tuners. He bought it for 3500 dollars and I just don't see where the hell all that money goes (I guess just for the name: Gibson). My ESP SV, which is a whopping 1000 dollars less expensive is waaaay better than the Shred X explorer, imo

  • @KyleDaSloth
    @KyleDaSloth 7 років тому

    lets be honest here. the only real reasons people buy crazy expensive guitars is a: to resell them 10-15 years later as an investment b: to hang them on a wall c: their influences are playing them and d: their influences played them back in the day because in the 70s and 80s most cheap guitars were shit. but nowadays many cheap guitars are really good. of course theres also that "proud to be made in America" thing. I still love my Korean guitars though.

  • @ARodYankFan
    @ARodYankFan 12 років тому

    @granskater I'd say Jackson. I love Ibanez (and the Edge Zero II your Ibanez option has) but Jackson's lightweight and has better pickups as you said. If you have the money to replace the Ibanez pickups with DiMarzios (amazing pickups for a cheaper price), then go for it. D-Activator and X's are the greatest DiMarzios for metal (...and maybe the X2N as well but it's kind of old...)

  • @MAzK001
    @MAzK001 13 років тому

    I kind of agree with the bolt on thing. My guitar has a mismatched washburn neck and stock hamer humbuckers. Somehow I feel that the sustain is also pretty decent considering my rubbish bolting on of the neck and my pretty screwed Ibanez TB15. But i might need some advice for my guitar cause it doesn't seem to have a lot of crunch. Im guessing it's either the am, the stock Hamer humbuckers or my playing... How exactly do you attack the strings to get the most crunch????

  • @MetalKen
    @MetalKen 14 років тому

    Also, the noition that Strats are not good for metal is completely faulty. Several major bands use them. Iron Maiden being one. Strats were used mostly on the Powerslave album, for example. You can see their guitarists using strats live on most of their recent (and even 80s) live albums. Strats can even do death metal. Example: The album None So Vile by Cryptopsy was recorded by Jon Levassuer, using a Fender Fat Strat (Humbucker, Single,Single), tuned down to B Standard.

  • @SuperUltra

    I wouldn't really recommend anything... it's subjective. I prefer a floyd rose because it's an added tool for songwriting for me personally. Plus it's fun to use. To really see how troublesome it can get when changing/tuning strings, I recommend you borrow someone's and try it yourself to see if it's worth the hassle. But of course, like anything else, after awhile, it gets easier.

  • @SuperUltra
    @SuperUltra 15 років тому

    When I got my first floyd rose, I did a lot of asking a research before I did anything. First thing, if you want to downtune, get higher gauge strings, so that it doesn't flub around so much... try not to use the factory strings. I changed mine the moment I got home. 2nd you gotta learn how to tune a floyd. Took me 3 hours to tune it properly. Unless, you don't really care about the floyd, then use a tremol-no or something and lock it down permanently. :)

I bought a 1990 Explorer reissue in that same year, and after that went straight to custom made guitars. In regards to kahlers and locking nuts. Just get your local luthier to machine the locking nuts and you'll have not tuning issues.

    Also, one downside when using floyd rose trems is that when you're locked to one tuning, you can't change it during a show or jam session. It'll affect the ENTIRE tuning. I've learned to live with it, but that's another thing you'd have to consider.

    @gksckddms Yeah. I agree. ESP are really creative and their guitars are amazing.
    Gibson are like the game company, Capcom. They are lazy now and put out mostly average products

    BTW, you can't buy Kahler X-Trems, those are only for guitar manufactures. You have to get the Hybrid. And another thing, the SD Blackout Metal is going to be WAY louder than the EMG-60.

    Jeff Henamens guitar has a 42mm nut. The standard ltd has a 43 mm nut. Love looking at YOUR nuts. Thanks

    That's why you don't use polish on a gibson guitar, nitrocellulose finishes are NOT poly finishes, they can and will stain if you don't take care of them PROPERLY.

    @AHMADF93 before 2004 yeah, after 2004 they started to cut corners. i've seen 6 messed up gibsons that are well over $1000 that have problems.

    $1,150 with hardshell case included. It took four months to build.

    Licensed Floyds aren't that bad. I have one on my B.C Rich JRV Standard and it stays in tune like a golden god. It's a real bitch to intonate though.
