This is the sort of stuff I stay subscribed for. I've never owned a VW, never plan to own one. But you do an excellent job of making make/model specific content that still relates to other makes and models. I really enjoy that this was just you working through the process and narrating it rather than talking about it then doing it off-camera. It was like I was standing in your shop drinking a beer while you worked.

8:25 Thanks for showing you braking the retainer. I just pulled mine to clean and paint as well, but I just had one slip out of the tape, and not brake. But it makes me feel better that you had the same issues as I did, but we both overcame them.

Nice information about wiper removal. I'll have to try that on my Passat.

love the vid, now you got me inspired to do my suburban engine bay. it's actually the cleanest engine bay ever. I've had so many comments about my engine bay. But however, I thought about replacing those looms cover. making them new. I have been pondering on about that a while......

you should have mentioned marking the wipers position so when you put them back on they are in the right spot alligned properly... learned that one the hard way

Sometimes there is a dot etched into the OE glass to show where the wiper should be located with the wipers are parked.

when removing wipers i put them up so there is no spring tension to fight against, then just wiggle wiggle. thankfuly no more wiring harnesses for me. the days of engine, tcm, full body harness replacements have disappeared. oh and btw if you ever work on a dodge, that is not a firewall... they like to call it a bulk head, i guess they have had too many fires, probably on either side of said wall :) good vid sir

Oh man. I've got a some hard times ahead. My 1984 Rabbit L's wiring all looks like a rat's nest. Parking lights don't work, rad fan doesn't come on, driver's side door doesn't turn the courtesy lighting on, no horns, etc etc. Woof. All I can think of is to do this and start over from scratch using the wiring diagram in the Bentley. Thanks for the advice.

+tjsean0308 it's not magnetic. It holds on really great. I'll mention it in the next Wookie video

Hello ,I have a 98 VW Jetta GLS 2.0 8v. I haave a broken pigtail 3-pin that connects to by the starter. So the black coated plastic wire goes or follows and plugs to the engine block. It looks like a plug type end (a round black plug type that is pluged to the block and a looks to me like a allen type bolt next to it. Which is difficult to get into to remove. A Plate or metal bracket that is holds the starteer and engine/frame bushing. The pig tail is broke and looking at this wire, it looks to me tha its a shielded wire. Can this wire be spliced together tosplice a wire that I cut from a car at the junkyard (also a 98 jetta.

Those spring type connectors are designed to be pushed down and pulled out.. you dont have to bend them or pry thrm off..

Echo ghettohillbilly1 -- mark the wiper locations before you remove them so they will be synchronized when you reinstall. Some OE windshields have a dot etched into the glass to show where the wipers should line up when the washer motor is parked (off).

In many cases that I've seen regarding fuel tanks not being able to take fuel, the problem has been a fault in the evap. system. Simple replacement of a smaller part than a fuel tank is much better, plus not as expensive for the customer.

    • @chriskeiley5343
      @chriskeiley5343 7 років тому +1

often times there is a check valve, in the filler or the tank that can get stuck. sometimes the vent is stuck or there is a clog in the vent line. if it is a faulty tank design, there is probably a recall. many dodge split or saddle tanks are under recall for said issue.

The MK4 is very failure prone. Well the MK5 is too, but the FCM is part of the main cooling fan

This is a long shot but are you in NC? Can you mentor me? Currently jobless and would like to learn how to wire/make harnesses. Currently have a corrado and mk1 project that is completely dismantled

HAHHAHA, I saw he JUST posted a video about pulling the engine. I love it.. I am really picky about wiring, especially when it comes to under the hood. :)

I also like it when FB live and your videos cross over. You'd think it would be boring to watch again, but seeing it all from different angles makes it interesting.
On the ETCG note- I think he originally said he wasn't going to clean up the engine bay, because he was pushed for time to complete the project. He has now gone way over that, so may as well just clean it up. I wouldn't want to be removing all of that at a later date to clean it, paint it, or whatever. But that's just my personal preference.

+Dan iel thanks for the FB live feed back. I think it's cool to see the two different videos. Haha.
I am cursed with the "while I'm in there" mindset. Hahha while I have the engine out, I might as well XYZ

Eric builds a (street) race car and emphasised in almost every other #FairmountProject video that he does not care THAT much for style.
Charles on the other hand plans on building a nice show car (I assume, lol). So there is that.
Seeing videos from both of them really makes me wanna have a Mazda 323f BG again but this time as a project car. Maybe sometime next year or so.

  • @sniperer72

The difference between etcg and humble mechanic. Eric doesn't clean the engine bay when he puts a shiny new motor inside.
