    I'm a Professional Pet Care Provider (Pet Sitter, Dog Walker, etc.) with my own company, and one thing I quickly learned when I started over 10 years ago was policy, policy, policy! A lot of people consider or go into Pet Sitting since they love animals, but that's only 1/3 of the job. Half is business/company practices and the rest is dealing with clients. Most of my clients are great people and I specializing in animals with special needs (behavioral concerns, need medications administered, exotic/rare pets, etc.), but I still run into clients who try to take advantage of me and my unique services. Those who try are always unsuccessful since I put together a Service Agreement with service and booking policies all clients must follow, otherwise my company will not offer services, period. Yes, there's still guilt when I think of the animal's well-being, but at the end of the day if I want to establish a good relationship with clients, the trust and respect must go both ways and I prefer a client base that supports me rather than takes advantage of me. It's a rewarding job, but it's certainly not for everyone.

    I used to be a pet sitter/dog walker and I tried my absolute best but the human clients were the absolute worst: rude, disorganized, not wanting to pay me or trying to scam me and when I don't back down and demand payment they blame me for "hurting" or mistreating their pet with no proof or just blasting me on Facebook. Really wasn't worth it for the few euros I got for my work tbh

    I'm soooo sorry you have had such a hard time! Lol, some times you live and learn. I'm a pet sitter and love it but I do have some stories. Can 100% say you MUST lay out your expectations and policies beforehand. And if you aren't comfortable or they're messing around you need to be ok dropping them.
    I jived with so much of what you've said (I've had pants ripped off too and personal things shredded) (plus the pressures and awkwardness, and the pain). Lol, I came in once on a new client and turns out they had chickens free roaming in a room in the back 😳 (I didn't know about them.) Really loooove hearing your experiences and input! It's nice hearing from someone who knows what really happens 🤣🐱

    • @Emiology

      If I was living a different life and threw my everything into the pet sitting I think I could probably make it work, but I ended up dropping about 90% of people who were fine during the meet and greet and became a nightmare soon after, and when you’re dropping that many people with the 20-30 other pet sitters it doesn’t leave many left 😂 My terms and conditions that they signed covered pretty much all of these situations but they still found ways around it 🤦🏻‍♀️ people are a nightmare

      @@Emiology I can so relate girl. I have people go, "But your so expensive." (Honestly I'm not, I could be charging more.) In my head I'm like you get what you pay for. Your babies are treated like they're my babies. You want a cheaper service go ahead here's where you can find them. I've had a few people come back after going elsewhere and treat me better after they had bad service elsewhere. I know I'm good and I treat them above and beyond what someone charging half my price does. The weeding through period is rough. But I'm fortunate to have really amazing clients after 7+ years of doing this. I don't have to try so hard for clients anymore, it's mostly word of mouth now. And I'm lucky my regulars have me coming even when they are working from home. They want me to stay in business so it's worked out well. You really have to have a tough skin to deal with the people and the loss of the pets (age, moving, or just not hearing back).
      BUT I'm glad you got to experience it and have decided you want to go in a different direction. I hope it works out well and you find something you love and are more comfortable doing! It makes all the difference in the world. When your burned out from dealing with clients it can make this job miserable. I appreciate you letting people know the good and bad because this is not easy work and nightmare clients and burn out is something people need to know about before deciding to do this! Wish someone would have told me about it before I started!

    My step mum is a equine vet and when she treats people’s horses which is very expensive for the owners so some of them are very cheeky and don’t pay but she doesn’t take them to court as she doesn’t really end up getting the money and spends more on a lawyer then what she earns from them so yes very frustrating when they don’t pay.

    As another dog walker/pet sitter, I can confirm all of these as being true. And Covid destroyed my business as well, I just decided to shut it down and get a normal job. It really sucks because I’ve built up this amazing client base and formed these great relationships with the animals but I just won’t be able to recover from quarantine if I continue with my business and not get a supplemental income.

      I see you wrote this comment a year ago. Have you been able to go back to your pet sitting business? I’m thinking about getting into doing it too, but not sure if things are back to “normal” enough yet?

    • @donnaryan71
      @donnaryan71 Рік тому +1

      @@BH-lp1vk late reply, and I only just saw this, but what happened to Paige happened to me too, during lockdowns. I am in Australia and we had some pretty long lock downs especially over Xmas which was my peak period so I lost a lot of income. However post-lockdown everyone wanted to go away and for a year it's been reasonably steady, so I would say yes, it's normal enough (at least in Australia and I would guess, elsewhere, except maybe in China where it is still a big problem). So if you want to, give it a go. Just take note of what the people who talk about policies say.

    I dog set a few weeks ago. Seem like the pet owner is clueless about how many accidents she had after the 3rd day. I didn’t do it for the $$$, but I’ve learned how clueless and careless a dog owner can be. There was no exchange of information on what happened during the 8 days/7 night they left on vexation. It was at more work then I anticipated but I stuck to it to a tea. I feel under appreciated. I totally get you and why you quite.

    Dog-trainer and (ex)dog-walker here. I can relate so much!
    Not being able to take sick-days without feeling horrible for the dogs that couldnt get out to pee was one of my main reasons to quit. I had an employee for a while, but she was too unreliable, which made it even worse.
    Since I only had one big dogwalking-group with roughly ten dogs at once I got around many of the other problems, since everything had to be very firmly structured to make that work. I only took at least twice weekly recurring customers, had a very toght pickup-schedule and payment was monthly up front.
    Meeting and introducing new dogs was always... interesting... more than once customers wildly understated their dogs behavioural issues like yours, which led to nightmarish scenarios. Fun.
    It can be an awesome job though, if you are able to put up firm boundaries with customers from the start.
    It helps a lot if you have a second leg to stand on moneywise for the first few years, so you can afford to be very picky about the clients you work with right from the start. It still takes two to three years at least to build up a stable, reliable client base with dogs/animals that fit well with your personality and with your kind of service.

    I'm a pet care specialist, senior educator and manager, and I offer babysitting for exotics at my own home... and I don't keep my mouth shut regarding care mistakes. I feel like my clients come to me to get the truth and know what I do as a job during the day; in my experience they seem quite open to polite criticism.
    The obstacle I have encountered right now, as we are in a pandemic, is that I refuse clients that are anti-vaxxers and anti-maskers as I have to put my safety first since I offer my services in my own home. I have been accused of 'discrimination'; although I 100% have the right to choose who I let on my own property, my privacy, my bubble.

    I had a situation where the owner was overseas, and two days before the booking, I contracted pnuemonia. I felt I couldn't cancel as she would not be able to get someone so last minute. I dragged myself out of bed 3 times a day for 2 weeks to look after her dog. It was winter and cold. I felt really, really ill and weak. The only good thing about that booking was the dog was very elderly and couldn't walk much or fast - because I certainly couldn't! . I think this contributed to me taking 6 months to get over the pneumonia.

    I can so relate to your experiences, I was a pet sitter/dog walker and like you I had some amazing clients, but I also have had more than a fair few unreasonable ones too.
    I had one lady who had a dog aggressive staffy, not a problem but I wasn't going to walk in any area's like parks incase a friendly dog came up to us. The owner insisted on paying me daily which was fine but only after I had a cup of tea with her.... I think she needed a friend, I felt bad too but she was a heavy chain smoker and I really didn't want to be there any longer than I had to be.
    I had another job where I had to dog sit for 17 dogs that lived in a small semi detached house with a small garden, and 8 cats they ranged in size from a Mastiff, to a Chihuahua. They was quite easy to look after the only problem was that even with the back door open they would 💩 in the house!! Some of the dogs would eat it quicker than you could clean it 🤢 the cats even 💩 in the shower or bath tub!
    And my belongings had gotten sprayed on by cats and I left stinking!!
    And lastly, I had a lady with a little dog, who was very destructive in the house. Her adult son had a disability and the dog would chew his equipment and make a pest of herself. This dog was terrified of the world, she'd not ever left the garden. I knew I could help as I have dealt with similar dogs before. Day by Day I grew her confidence and every day she would walk a bit further, and a bit further and a bit further. I was so happy with her progress which didn't happen quickly but I could see she was enjoying it more and.more. she was a hound breed so I encouraged her to.use her nose and she would feel more comfortable and confident. Her destructive nature had vanished she slept and was becoming a lovely dog to care for. Then I got a phone call after about a month, could I stop walking her because she found fleas on her. And she was very rude and I tried to discuss the use of frontline and if that proved not to work for her dog that there was other brands available from the vets that might work better. She didn't want to know.
    I felt so bad for the dog, she was doing so well and she was enjoying life. She was about a year old and was experiencing a world outside of her garden. 😞
    I had some really lovely clients too. Who when our services ended (as they was moving) have me thank you gifts for my services and this was a lovely side.
    I am quite happy that I am not doing this work anymore though, and the bad clients was so stressful, and I didn't need that in my life.
    Fortunately I moved so like you a good way to ease out without feeling guilty.
    I hope you last clients treat you well until the service ends.

    And then I’ve just put a new water bowl in there, and they won’t go near it, and they push a load of their bedding underneath it, so there’s this hill of hemp sitting right under it🤦‍♀️😂 any advice?!

    To avoid money issues, I always act this way: eithernI accept booking via apps ( Rover or cat in a flat), yes, they take commissions, but I prefer to be sure I'm getting paid. In alternative, if they want to do it outside of the apps ( which I don't accept in case of first time clients) I demand payment upfront to confirm the booking: no payment, no booking confirmation, no matter what they say, if they don't pay first I just won't showw up and I'll feel free to accept other bookings. I never had issues so far.
    It never happened to me that they run out of food, if that happens, I'd buy it only if it's a regular customer I know very well, otherwise I'll invite them to place a delivery and have food delivered at home the next day.

She’s paying me up front, I’ve had a walk with the dog and a visit for where I’m staying. The dogs are golden - so well behaved! They’re very good with payments. I’m allowed to have my long distance boyfriend come and stay with me while I’m there and they’re just lovely people! She even got dog tags that said “pet sitter” with my number on them so we can have them on the collars as well as the other dog tags. I love dog sitting for people like that!

    I ran my own pet care service in NY for 10 years. I am now working as an employee for a service not in NY (I won't say where.) But tonight, I'm turning in my notice. I am just completely burnt out. My service has me working 7 days a week, schedules new visits without prior knowledge or approval, constantly calls me to cover for others, shoddy routing, walking into nightmare homes (filthy, hoarding, etc), untrained/aggressive dogs... no more. Today was just my last straw. I don't have anything else lined up, but I have money in the bank and I'm retraining for a new career. I love animals, and I want to keep loving animals. So I think it's time to stop.

    I do it occasionally at my own home for love for pets. I require own food, toys, grooming tools and medicines(if required). I cannot have my own pet, because my landlord doesn’t allow it in my current flat, so I treat my pet fever by sitting other people's pets. I ask little bit money, but not a lot, because like I said I love cats and I treat them like own babies. They're mostly specific breed cats as well like hybrid cats.

    Hold up cats need two different litter trays? I’ve got two cats and one tray and have never had an issue! Could someone please educate me?

    • @Emiology
      @Emiology  4 роки тому +2

      The general rule is one litter tray per cat but some people say 2 cats should have 3 litter trays, if your cats are fine that’s good but it’s usually because some cats can get territorial over it or they can end up having accidents in the house (which happened in the situation I mentioned and it would’ve been blamed on me for not cleaning the litter tray frequently enough despite doing it daily)

    • @MyPerfectMischief
      @MyPerfectMischief 4 роки тому

      I’ve heard that you want one more litter tray than you have cats. Some cats are picky and will ONLY pee in one tray and poo in the other. Some cats won’t use a litter tray if it’s dirty (used). If you have multiple cats, one cat might be territorial over a litter tray, which causes the other cat to use something else as the toilet. As a cat gets older and it might be harder for them to get around to where the litter box is, having multiple trays placed around the house is also a good idea.

    I've been a dogwalker and petsitter full time for 4 years, but I thankfully work through a company that handles all the billing and client issues. I just get assigned my animals for the day, and go do my thing. This way, I never worry about being paid, never worry about angry clients, etc. All the clients (and their pets) are required to meet with at least one of us before we will do any services, and that includes getting a profile set up so we are as organized as we can be when we actually do services for them. If someone is a problem, we can ask not to go back. That said, oh man, I have stories! You can't work fulltime with animals without some stories. Been dragged through the mud, had clothes destroyed, and dealt with some weird humans. Taking days off is the hardest part for me, because I'm bad at saying No when it's about an animal needing care, so I'm known for being a bit of a workaholic. One time, when I took a whole day off to visit a friend, and the office manager said she was proud of me lol!

It will be the longest time we have ever been away from my two little rats, but we’ve decided to leave them with our other Aunt and Uncle (and two cousins around my age of 13). I trust them to feed them and give them water and everything, but I don’t really want them to get them out to play because my cousins don’t have a safe, enclosed area for rats to run around in, and I want to tell them in a nice way that they should keep the rats in their cage, but I don’t want to hurt their feelings and make them feel like I don’t trust them. However I think that my Aunt and Uncle know that it wouldn’t be the best as they’re not used to handling them, so hopefully it will be okay.

    I don't mean for this to come off rude. I have been pet sitting since 2013 and have years of pet experience prior to that (in shelters, vet hospitals, boarding kennels, etc.) Part of running a pet sitting business is to also communicate YOUR expectations with the owner. You can't just rely on the owner to provide the instructions you need. You have to ask specific questions, such as where will the key be located, where will the food be located, where are the leashes and other supplies located. You're telling me you walk into people's homes and have no idea of anything because the owner didn't tell you? Did you have these people fill out a pet profile form or a key release form and contracts and things?

    • @Emiology
      @Emiology  3 роки тому +1

      Of course I asked all these questions. I had a 10 page contract and form for them to fill out with information on the pets health, behaviour, the home etc, I made sure on the meet beforehand that they gave me a tour of where everything was such as food, toys, litter trays. But people lie, they move things or they’re not very transparent and do everything to make your job more difficult than it needs to be. Every example I gave in this video was an example of a lack of organisation on the owners behalf, The key release agreement was to drop their key off at mine before they left, when they didn’t do that I was told the key would be in a plant pot for example, I get there and it’s not, then commenced an hour wild goose chase for a key that was with a friend of a friend with a poor dog having to wait inside needing the toilet.

    • @valeriecarole
      @valeriecarole 3 роки тому

      @@Emiology I've never had this experience even slightly. My clients have been great -- even the slightly disorganized ones. Only one time did I have someone forget to leave the key behind for me. They were a daily dog walking client and had me use the back-up outside to get in the house. One time they forgot that they must have needed to use the back-up key and never put it back. They still paid me for the visit even though I couldn't get in the house, which was nice. But, 99% of my clients give me a key to keep, which is highly preferred. I usually request the key at the meet and greet. If I have to pick-up the key before the first visit. I charge a $10 fee. I really don't like having to use keys left outside on the property. But, all your other experiences are wild! I would NEVER have done half the stuff your clients made you do or I'd expect payment if they made me drive around town to get a key to their house and food for their pet. That's incredibly unacceptable and outright rude. It sounds like some of your clients took your kindness as a weakness and took advantage of you. Sorry it's been so rough on you.

The owner in question this time around, was due to drop them off the night before, never turned up, then left their animal alone and left the key somewhere outside the house in a pot and expected me to go on a wild goose chase, but it was between dropping the client for being unreliable and leaving an animal with no one to care for it all weekend. Big mistake, and to this day I will ONLY take out dogs on a leash, no matter what their owner thinks they can handle. When I tell you SECONDS after I let them out, a man walks down the road with his big dog on a leash and these tiny gremlins TAKE OFF barking and growling at this man, I had to chase the dogs in circles around this strangers feet while apologizing and saying “they’re not even my dogs!” While his poor dog tries his best to stay patient and not end these tiny fuckers with one bite. @@yvieclarke5162, That's awesome! Yes, definitely don't worry about leaving them when you go to school or, maybe in the future, work. Rats can be even left alone for up to two days (at most). Especially when you get multiple rats, they can easily keep each other busy if the cage is good and full of places to explore! They'll probably be napping for the most part when you're gone at school- rats are most active at dawn and dusk.
      When you do let them free roam just make sure to be there in the same room to keep them out of trouble and try to "rat-proof" the area a bit by covering any gaps under doors or closets (with towels or other door blockers), moving cords and wires out of the way, and putting away medicine or harmful foods (including trash- they love to poke in your trashcans if given the opportunity!).
