VOYAGER reacts to Gåte - Ulveham - EUROVISION 2024

- Опубліковано 22 тра 2024
- Australia's 2023 @EurovisionSongContest entrant, the progressive synth-pop metal quintet VOYAGER are giving their ninth-most qualified takes on the 2024 Eurovision official entrants, starting with the mystical heavy modernised medieval stylings of Norway's @Gatemusic and their song "Ulveham".
(featuring a little snippet of David Firth/BBCs "Fat Pie's David Firth ridicules 2009's music scene - BBC Comedy Extra" - a hilarious little animated sketch... you should watch it now: • Fat Pie's David Firth ... )

petition to have Voyager become the official Australian ESC commentators
We'll do it!
where do I sign :)
So agreed!
They could present The Jury vote.
@@ar50000 Guess what
Last year my favorite Eurovision thing was to watch people react to Voyager’s entry. I think this year it’s going to be watching Voyager reacting to new ESC contestants. 😂❤
Norway deserves to win this year, this is it
Takk, jeg er enig med deg. Thank you, I agree with you. 🤗
The instrument used is called ”Nyckelharpa” in swedish or ”Nökkelharpe” in norvegian. Meaning ”Keyfiddle”. A traditional instrument in Sweden and norway . Ulveham means Wolfskin. The female singing in the very beginning of the Song is traditional herding call. Called ”kulning ”. No words. Just voice. The Singer of Gåte uses this Way of singing in the refrain. In a more heavy and rock way. The namn of the group is Gåte, meaning Riddle. The lyriks are based on old middeval song. Its about the beautiful daughter who has to leave her home because of the envious stepmother. But wherever she goes she becomes popular. So the stepmother turns her stepdaughter to a needle and then to a sword (symbolic offcorse). But people likes the stepdaughter the most anyway. So the stepmother makes her stepdaughter to become a wolf with wolfskin. To walk the dark forests alone. But the the wolf wants revenge . So the wolf attacks the stepmother and kills her. The only thing is that the stepmother is pregnant with a son. A halfbrother to the wolf. She Will never be happy and complete again because she drank the blood of her own brother.
Thankyou !!!!!! This is incredible. I love this song 10000 times more now after reading this and understanding it better
The singing techinc kulning us Also swedish, as a Swede I would like this to win
The Norwegian word for traditional herding call is "lokking" or "kulokk".
No that's not all correct. When the stepmother curses her into a wolf she says she will never be cured unless she tastes her brother's blood. The girl runs into the forest because she doesn't want to hurt her brother.
Then one day the stepmother is riding in the forest and the girl comes across her and rips into her tasting her blood. This lifts the curse because the stepmother carries the same blood as the brother (who was already born way before)
There is no ö in the Norwegian alphabet, this is wrong information.
You’ll never see Norway lacking in sending in a variance of artists year after year- all of them being amazing
🤗♥
The first time I saw this song in the Norweigan semi-finals I was blown away. Then I heard the whole six minute full length version...and the build up to the final chorus is just phoenominal. Love this one. Great review too!
The chorus gave me goosebumps - it's catchy in a different way and is what keeps repeating in my head afterwards. Everything about this performance blew me away. Loved seeing you all getting emersed into it along the way 🙂
Yeah, the chorus kinda makes it for me: the huge drop, the half-time feel, the vocals that are emotional despite being wordless. As a prog nerd, this is Extremely My Shit, and the end of the video gives me the impression that it is also Extremely Their Shit.
Great reaction. I think you should watch Gåte ft. Djerv - "Svarteboka" if you want to know more about this band. They're absolutely amazing.
Gåte are amazing live!! They’ve been at it for over 20 years 🥳 you should check out Svarteboka, a new favourite for me 🤩 also Jygri and Iselilja - both brilliant albums 👏🏻👏🏻
Next up, Croatia reaction? 😁
Also, it’s nice to see Danny doing well, stay strong man!!! ❤️🩹
Thanks for doing it, and it's great to see you again!
This song wasn't written for Eurovision, neither the chorus, and that's what I like the most, it's authentic.
I don't want to see songs written for ESC / for the artist, where the performance is just a theatre act where the singer tries to convince us that it's their song.
Much love to all the bands who attend ESC with their own songs!
That is partially why the Sanremo songs are so strong every year - they are written to impress and move the ITALIANS. If a song wins and chooses to go to ESC< it's already had it's true test, from the Italian perspective.
Please do this for all the Eurovision songs! Thank you please! :D
Funny you mention Leprous, Magnus (the guitarist of Gåte) featured on Einar's first solo single Grotto!
Good to know, that is cool
Please make this a series! I'd love to hear what you think of Windows95Man and Baby Lasagna!
if you like leprous, you will probably love magnus`s(the guitarist) other band by the named "22", it's an absolute hidden prog gem that that deserves so much more love. i think it was said some place that leprous even was inspired by them to some degree. I urge you to check out the "Flux" album and the song "plastik".
Phwoar, I can hear the Leprous sound here big time! Thanks for letting me know about this!
@@thescoon1 you're welcome, glad you liked it!
😍 Being 50% Aussie and then getting to see Voyager reacting to Gåte with their song Ulveham - my absolute favourite entry of this season - is simply lovely 💓. Thanks for sharing your opinions with us all and please return to the ESC another year 🎶. You guys rock! Glad to know you enjoyes listening to some good old Norwegian folkrock. Ulveham means wolf skin, so don't let yourself getting too carried away about the title while dreaming about ham and other delicious stuff. These lyrics are talking about some serious stuff from the Medieval times... 😉
I just love how you're all genuinely big Eurovision fans. Loads of past entries are always like "Yeah, I love Eurovision. Loreen was my favourite..." but you know they're just there for the exposure. You guys get it
What?!?! Two of my favorite things: Voyager and Eurovision Reactions, in ONE video??? Be still my heart! 😉 Fantastic reaction. Your thoughts and comments are so insightful, especially given your expert experience. Thanks for sharing and I look forward already to the next one ❤❤
Awesome reaction you guys🤗
Loved you in Eurovision😍
This is the semifinal performance, and they have changed the lyrics a bit since (it’s actually better now imo)
I love this song and performance, and I’m so glad we’re sending Gåte (gaw-teh) with this original song to Malmö🤘
The genre is folk/rock.
Gåte has been a band since 1999 , with a pause in between, so they know what they're doing.
About the song:
The intro is an old “kulokk”.
A “kulokk” is how the women called/calls the cows home to be milked in the summer (often in the mountains)
So the chorus is inspired by this “kulokk”
The song itself is inspired by a norwegian medieval folklore/ballade.
Ulveham means wolfskin
English lyrics:
[Sample: Vocalization; Marit Jensen Lillebuen]
[Verse 1]
I was such a beautiful maiden
My stepmother evil, my mother she died
She turned me into a sword and a needle
And sent me to the king's estate
And the anger my stepmother felt the most
That all the stately liked me best
[Chorus: Vocalization]
[Verse 2]
Then she gave me skin like a grey wolf
She cursed me to walk the forest alone
And never will I bе whole and good
Before I drink my brothеrs' blood
[Chorus: Vocalization]
Greetings from Norway🥰
This is such a fun idea❤ was a very good video. Will you guys do this with other songs aswell?
It's great here in the U.S. waking up to this. I liked Voyager's entry last year and I like Norway's entry this year.
This will be the very first time one of my overall favourite bands - Gåte are my favourite non-metal band - will participate in the ESC. Gåte were founded already in 1999, when their singer was just 14 years old. I have been a fan of this band since 2004 and have seen them live four times so far, the last time a few months ago in Oslo, which might have been their so far most spectacular show. BTW, the vocalist's brother who played violin and keyboards left the band just a few weeks before their tour last autumn and was replaced by John Stenersen, who plays the keyed fiddle here. Since he isn't featured on the recent band-pics, I assume he isn't a permanent member of Gåte (yet), but only plays with them when they are performing live, thus your assumption that he might be just a session-musician seems correct (so far). Since I've also been following his own band Bergtatt since the beginning in 2009, I know that he is a huge fan of Gåte, so I'm happy for him that he now can play together with them.
In addition to the live-clips and music-videos you find on Gåte's official youtube-channel, I highly recommend to also watch what might be one of their most impressive live performances, namely this live rendition of "Margit Hjukse" (in which especially their guitarist does some crazy stuff in the second half of the song - just see what he does with a portable spotlight): ua-cam.com/video/OnNjBs6ULlE/v-deo.html And since you liked the song "Ulveham", don't forget to check out the original version which is about twice as long as the ESC-version and was already released last year on their EP "Vandrar".
The chap playing the trad instrument is from Wardruna
Woah, I love Wardruna!
His name is John Stenersen (Wardruna).
He is also the band leader (and only founding member left) of the Norwegian female-fronted Folk Metal/Rock band Bergtatt, which released two albums titled "Røtter" (2009) and "Lagnadsoger" (2013) and still does exist (I asked him about it after Gåte's concert in Oslo last October), even though they haven't been very active over the last couple of years. He also plays hurdy-gurdy. For anyone who might be interested, I recommend to check out this live-recording from their concert in Budapest in 2016, which features their current line-up: ua-cam.com/video/rrcHo3jdcU8/v-deo.html
@@MissLoonasSpeech I didn't know that. Thanks, I'll listen to the albums.😊🖤
That a was a light-hearted but excellent review.
Love you all, mates
The comparison to Leprous are very clear…thought the exact same when I heard it. Wonder if Einar could recreate those vocals 😉😂 My number one and I don’t expect it to come down…love it!!
Please please please do this for all the songs !!!!! Thank you for being such awesome ambassadors ❤
That's the plan... if all the editing doesn't kill me ;)
I think you guys are gonna love Croatia~
Having my fav artisits/bands from both ESC 2023 and 2024 in the same vid is a dream come true
You guys were my absolute favorite part of last year, I hope we get more of you this year, I love how much fun you guys seem to have with each other ❤
This is my favourite so far, I Love the traditional elements. It's a great mix of Eluveitie, Within temptation and Nightwish ❤❤❤
And I love that you stayed a part of the ESC bubble ❤
Much love from Germany 😊
Semi-related, but I can tell from the light outside that you’re in Perth. I mean I know you live in Perth so that is also a give away, but the light looks different than in does in Sydney. Photo memories of my trips to Perth will come up and I’ll look at the light and say, “That’s Perth.” I am not a crackpot.
I love Voyager so much. Please do this every year: I’m loving the joy, humour and technical expertise that’s going into these reviews. I’ll be checking all of them out.
Estonia also has some cool folk instruments in their song this year, totally in a different kind of song though!
One of my favorite artists from last year reacting to my favorite Eurovision entry maybe of all time. Greatness !
Realy cool that Voyager was reacting to Norway and realy cool that they liked the song ❤ Thank u soo mutch guise . Huge hugs from Norway ❤❤
The traditional instrument is a Nyckelharpa
Its always so much fun to watch you! You are a great band with a great chemistry! Can't wait to rock with you live in autumn in Vienna!
So glad you liked the song! As a Norwegian American it hits me on a deep soul level and somehow makes me cry even though it is a raging banger. Looking forward to your further reviews!
The chorus is huntingly incredible
I love the reaction and I love this song. I love that they took something traditional and made it contemporary.
This was a truly interesting listen. Hearing you all talk about the songs from an insider perspective is fascinating!
I LOVE that you guys have done a reaction video. Please do more of these (hopefully for all of the ESC entries).
It's interesting to see your opinion as fellow musicians, former Eurovision entrants, and (of course) Australian National Treasures.
Love Norway's song. It's currently in my top three.
Welcome to the Eurovision Reactors bubble! MORE PLEASE ❤️
And.. The drummer playing also in Maraton!
Please make more of these!
HOOOORAAAYYYYY!!! I didn't know I needed this so much. Thank you! Luv ya! ❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥
Very Leprous-y (LEPROSY!) - thought the chorus is Bjork-esque (look at me mr fancy pants). Love the concept for this video, thanks guys!
The guitarist and bassist used to be in the fantastic Norwegian band 22 who were one of the best bands in the world. Listen to their amazing song Call me Trimtab to see just how great they were.
Love you guys. Great to see Danny looking so well. See you in UK in October x
So so stoked you guys are doing this!!! Looking forward to other editions. Such great comments covering many angles. You guys are the best!!!!
Hey hey it's Voyager! I love this and I miss you guys at Eurovision
Me too, I love the intensity, and her voice is incredible!!
I love that you did this. The Eurovision react community needs more old embittered lifelong musicians.
I am so here for this! Can't wait to see more (of both reactions and that adorable dog!)
Omg! So happy to have you guys reacting to Gåte! You were my favorite entry last year and Gåte is my favorite for this year’s contest
My 2nd favorite from last year reacting to my 2nd favorite from this year, awesome! 😊
My favourite band of 2023 is reacting to my favourite band of 2024. Fantastic!
Everyyyyyone misses you, but this helps - you ARE still part of Eurovision 24 this year❤️🫶❤️ BRILLIANT...can't wait to hear your other evaluations 🎶❣️ ps Alex ham & gate LOL
Simone and Danny, I hope you're doing well (as well as the rest of course)! Anyway, fun video! I think it's a very cool song and performance myself.
I hope Danny and Simone are doing better.
We love you guys 😊 can‘t wait to see you in Europe next October
YESSS WE NEED THIS!!
Loved seeing your reaction to this. Would be very excited to see your reaction to Ireland too.
Good to see Danny doing well! Love this vid and can't wait to see you lot in Manchester in October!
Please do more of these ☺️
we want more! :D
Love you guys! Hope you come back to Eurovision one day❤ Still get hyped listening to your song😊
Great insights. This might explain why they didn't end up higher in Songfest. It might have been just too complex for this everage contest. ;P
Thank you for sharing with us! I’m looking forward next one!❤️
I'm so thrilled to see Danny back in action. Hope he's doing as well as he looks. ^_^
Awesome! Looking forward to all your reactions!
I recommend everyone to listen to the full version, it's almost twice as long!
You guys should listen to the full version as well, it almost has 3 more minutes, including some unexpected screamo vocals from Gunnhild in the bridge
You should listen to their last EP Vandrar.
Thanks for this, Voyager! Nice to see you're doing well!
Subscribing. Hope you do more of these!
Love to see you❣️
I still listen to Promise. Came to see and hear some ESC videos UA-cam to distract me from my neighbour who is jamming his sawing machine... to hear it with you😂
Love for Gåte / 🇳🇴 this year🎶
OMG this is so pleasantly surprising seeing you again, thank you for the reaction!
loved your song last year it was the best
the band has been going since 1999
YES - a wish come true that I didn’t knew i wanted so badly ❤
You must react to Croatia’s entry at some point 🤞🤘😬
Love it! ❤
I've really been enjoying your reaction videos, although I've been watching them randomly and only just watched this one.
If you don't already know, "Ulveham" wasn't written for Eurovision. The original version is on their EP 'Vandrar' and is nearly twice as long.
GATE ate amazing
Gåte (pronounced [ˈɡôːtə]; Norwegian for 'riddle')🖤🐺
Riddle or enigma
The other side of the world checking in here 😉
Gåte is great. A Folk-Metal band that has been around for ages. I saw them live back in 2001 or 2002. Back then, Gunhild (the vocalist) actually wasn't old enough to enter the venue (18yrs limit). While that really didn't post any problem for the band or the gig, that fact was almost all everybody talked about before the show. For us 18+ppl back then it was funny.
After the show we all was blown away. That was just DIFFERENT. And amazing.
If you really want to check more of their stuff out, start with the early material. Brilliant.
Norway out.
Omg that David Firth reference 💖💖 that music predictions video is one of his masterpieces
Just a short explanation about lyrics. Her biological mother is dead, and her step-mom (Evil) cursed her so she would be a Wolf (Ulveham = Wolf leather). She could only become human by drinking her Brothers blood, but she didnt have a Brother. One day she attack and killed her stepmom while she was a Wolf, and then she turned human. Cause her stepmom were pregnant with her Brother.
You are my winners ESC 2023 no matter who "won". It would be great if you could react all top 3 - 5 songs in the winning ODDs
Thank you guys for making ESC-Reactions. You´re awesome.🤘
Especially after the German broadcaster cancelled the Songcheck-Reactions & Shows, i´m glad you keep it alive in your own funny way.😊
That's my favorite performance
Gåte is an old band, so I was almost shocked to see them win the national Melodi Grand Prix, and being sent to Eurovision, as they're a band I listened to a lot in the early 2000s, as back then there were two great "folk metal" type bands, Gåte, and Lumsk.
in with the progpower shirt YEAAA BOIIIIIZ!
Quick translation guide: Gåte=riddle, ulveham=wolf skin (though in this context, it refers to shapeshifter/person turning into a wolf through use of a wolf skin)
Sigh. Everyone forgets the second meaning of Gåte: enigma. This band fits the second meaning perfectly. Their songs are the epitome of enigmatic
Hoping to see your reaction to Ireland's entry. Can't wait for that.
I keep forgetting you guys are from Perth so the "Midland Gate" reminded me of that lol
After hearing all the songs once, there is one song that has stuck in my brain and that is Ulveham. with Gåte. Tells the lot!
“Yay, band!”
I just love Simone in this 🤣❤️
So glad to see Danny in good condition
Love to see you react to this!! But very weird that this video had overlayed the old and new lyrics on top of each other🤔
Find it so great Australia is a part of the Eurovision contest..
Please react to the other songs - I loved this!
