How To Make An Articulated Leather Breastplate

  • This tutorial video will guide you through the process of making an articulating cuirass with step-by-step instructions. You can scale the pattern to any size and you'll learn every step including how to burnish the leather edges for a smoother feel, and experiment with tooling stamps for a unique visual effect. Shaping the leather pieces before adding rivets is crucial for a good look and easy assembly, and using a retaining strap is a highly underutilized technique that makes all the difference. Make sure to plan ahead for the placement of buckles on your breastplate to determine the fit and accommodate additional items. That looks great! I got worried when you started riveting the top bits together, like, "... Did he forget this was going to be articulated?" But I shoulda known better than to doubt you!
One thing I would appreciate is a guide to attaching non-leather materials to leather. Canvas and cloth primarily, but things like glass or plastic (for goggles, say, or like a phone holder, as much as these don't really seem to be the style you're going for on this channel) as well. I'm working on a pauldron, and my plan was to kind of sheath it around a cloth sleeve, but I'm struggling to come up with a good way to affix it due to my regretful decision to include a large lamellar section down the bicep. I was hoping to avoid sewing, but I fear it might be inevitable.

Greaves and tassets, please, to finish the set. As an amateur leather working enthusiast, I cannot tell you how excited each and every video in this series has made me. I look forward to these more than the release of the latest Marvel movie.
I have no criticisms. Your videos are professional, concise, have excellent backing soundtracks, present all relevant information, and the purchased patterns that go with them are easy to print and use.
My only request is for more. More armor. Please finish this set and, if possible, start a new one. Learning from these has been both fascinating and exciting.
If you do want to introduce another armor set in the future, what would you think about upping the level to have people build a set with an intermediate difficulty level? I think after completing all these tutorials, your viewers may be able to take their crafting to the next level.

I recently built the helmet as my first big piece and it shows off the best. Watching this video, I see you using the orange foam chunks for doing the rough-in work on dying. I find that the foam wedge brushes work quite well for edge work near the lines. They are cheap, disposable, and will hold a reasonably sharp edge, even after the spirits in the dye cause the foam to swell.

Another amazing pattern! Can't wait to see the distressing video. You could also use a light box to line up the patterns, or what I do is line them up by placing them on one of my windows on a sunny day while I tape them together. Would love to see greaves of some kind. Lots of cosplay uses different things that look like boots and you could attach the sabaton to them.

I'm very glad you mentioned sizing at the very beginning, because for armor (any armor) if you want a good fit you need to modify any pattern to fit your body correctly -- with loose fitting in mind. Suits should fit snuggly, not armor. Unless you're in the Matrix and your armor IS a suit.
