Them old homesteader rockpiles are amazing. All them small rocks picked up and most likely unloaded by hand off a stone boat. I remember Dads first rockpickers were me and my brother walking ahead of our little JD with a front end loader filling by hand. Once I got older he let me take the tractor and pick. I would put it in low gear at idle and let it go then walk around and fill the bucket. Break time was going to dump it. Ahhh good times....
My Grandfather’s brother emigrated to Rosetown Sask area from the Uk on a assisted passage in 1926 out of Liverpool £24 including 160 acres of virgin prairie arriving in May so he could build a house before winter
Years and years ago late sixties early seventies LP assist on their tractors when they had a hard pull they would give it a little bit of LP so it would bring up the horsepower
Our dad made us pick up all the small rocks an eat em, so he could save on tucka. Then we had to sleep on broken glass. Every mornin we had to knit two mile of chicken wire with crowbars. We done it tough, but the old man said we had it easy compared to when he was a kid.
Regarding rockpiles and slewes, some time back we dug out some wet spots (+/- slewes) and filled them up with rocks (yeah, we have them as well) but only to some 3 ft from the suface, the rest was filled up with some of the good dug out soil. Voila, act of magic, the wet spots were not so bad the next spring. Natural drainage had been helped to do its thing. I imagine your land is different, alcaline springs and who knows what but, perhaps a workout next winter, with your earthmoving scuadrone, could be worth a try in a couple of spots. Perhaps you find gold when you are digging 🤔🤑👍
Its funny as we get bigger iron to do things faster and "better" we end up burning all this fuel. It wasnt so long ago that we would work up about 600ac. And then seed it on no more then a 150 gallons of fuel. But it took us all spring.
Man, I can only imagine how long and boring a day could be while working one field that is 10+ sections in size. Not falling asleep at the wheel could be a challenge.
3-1/2 miles long you must get pretty excited when you get to the end of the field so you can turn. I guess when you have to actually steer the tractor it wouldn’t be as bad😂
But remember that the fuel per hour on the dash will go up and down with the engine load from 33 mph to probably 6 gallons an hour on steep downhill sections so would probably be about 15 gph average
Hi Mike, I have a question (you saw that coming I think). If one tractor doesn't have auto steer working, doesn't that mess up the lines for the other tractors/seeders in the same field? Hope you get some more rain this year, take care.
HP will approximate 20 times GPH fuel burn using .35 pounds of fuel per hour per horsepower. Brake specific fuel consumption can be as low as .3 but that is at 1100-1200 rpm.
Hi Mike, I have a question, you have drill at front then your cart and I just watched welker brothers drilling and they have cart then drill and wondered why you haven't tried that way as it must be better to take all your wheeling out and easy to do corners , or would say the disadvantage is not being able to see your drill when it's at back of cart? Look forward to your response. Keep up your excellent work.
The cart and toolbar are not interchangeable: they have to be set up that way, likely from the factory (particularly for the array of hoses). Don't think Bourgault even offers a rear toolbar configuration in this size. Never seen it in any images at least.
Check the plug at the back of ur tractor. The isobus connector. I had the same problem with my GPS. Went back and on the back of that plug it was unplugged. Probably not ur Problem but worth a check.
Over 30 gallons of fuel an hour , not bad lolll the engine in my sailboat is a kubota 30 HP ( BETA30 the brand ) under load . 1.6 liters @ 2200 RPM an hour . Yes liter not gallon …

@@kenhofer8063well considering I’m from southern Alberta(a couple hours away from Mike) and the land was covered in glaciers at one point during the ice age…
So wouldn’t you be better off running a smaller drill and cart to keep the speed up and fuel consumption down, wouldn’t it equal out in the end and maybe be better on the tractor. Just asking.
I don't believe they do it this way, they just divide the field into sections and everybody gets one. At least that was how they did it 2 years ago, it might've changed in the meantime
Great illustration Mike. Always wondered why you guys didn't pull 100 ft. drills. I know traction is sometimes an issue but seems you usually speak about lack of power. Do you guys not do the ECU tunes to add horsepower like so many farmers do???🦾
They have so many hills and their fields are so large that it doesnt make sense to try and do it this way. They would double seed so much and use so much more fuel
I'm 42. I remember when we didn't have 1 piece of equipment with autosteer. Now if it goes down I'll just quit until it's fixed lol.
6500 acre field??!! That's awesome, now that's a field haha, awesome video as always mike, God bless an thanks for sharing 💪🤙👌👍✊

Have a great spring planting. Be safe
I truly hope the weather plays fair with you guys this year and you all get a bountiful harvest Mike 😄👌👌

Sure nice to see water in the sloughs down in your country after such dry years!
Usually when you clear up those rockpiles, you get to the bottom and find the reason it’s there. Generally there’s a monster boulder at the bottom 😂
Over in the east you might also find the fittings for a horse drawn rock pan in some ancient mulch too.

That is quite a big field Mike.👍
2 row with the edge of the bonnet in speed time not to shabby 😊

Great video Mike
1 field 6500 acres thats insane , im from a state where a 50 acre field is huge.
Every pass on a 3 mile long field with that drill is 30 acres covered so 1 round (down and back) would be bigger than your field.

You should try to tune one of your tractors and see how good it dose on the hills

Great awesome video mike ,
33 gallons an hr 3 mile run 4.5 miles per hr. So each 3 mile run is 21 gallons. That puts the size into perspective.
Isn't the 33 at peak consumption?
3 miles is 30 ac.1 gal/ac

Hi Mike could you get the tractors dyno tuned like Larson farms does and increase the horse power
Rock pile? Bring in a rock crusher and make your own crush gravel!
100 ft seeder...... no problem mike. just gonna have to try and see how it does
Mike ya needs to try a 100 h.p. tune on one of your tractors to see how much it helps you pull the hills
Have you ever thought about getting your tractors tuned to see if it would help on the hills?
He should try it

Otto Steer must be a cousin of Otto Pilot in the movie Airplane.
As flat as that land is, it’s easy to imagine that 15,000 years ago that area was covered by 10,000 feet of glacial ice!!!

Yes you can. They are called Big Bud’s. Coming from a guy that runs a quadtrac.
