I recalled this video from 2 years back when I was looking for a tripod head with the Deardorff 5x7. I bought the Luland (Ries - Knockoff) and works well. Thanks

You bet, they're the best, most stable, most beautiful tripod on the market. I've a J100 for 30+ years and another of their tripods is 30 years older than that. Not only that but the firm I worked for sold them cutting tools to build the tripods with. Great people all around.

A tripod to consider, Hi-Boy Tripod. The one I purchased a few years ago for $125 had a Medium Format camera on it, I see one now for $74 when I googled Hi Boy tripod. Another new expensive tripod. Gitzo GT5543XLS Gitzo Maximum Working Height 78" Minimum 3.9" Weight 6.88 lb. you could use the Ries head you have.

Spencer -- Like WoW! That IS one massive tripod. I have the "Zone VI" maple tripod, as you know, for my 8X10 Ansco -- However... If I was to get a larger camera I do think that I would get this Ries tripod that you have here. -----> About the VID you put together... I like the "straight-forward" No B.S. way of it. All too many other "professional movie makers" are all about the production - and that is good - However. Here you show what the product is all about and no fancy crap to get in the way. Thank You for that.

James, appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment! It's beast of a tripod. I just took it on a trip out of state and it was a commitment to carry and take with. However, when I had it set up to take the photo, it was SOLID as a rock. Again, I appreciate you taking the time to watch and I hope some of my other videos help in some way. Thanks!

Thanks for the presentation Spencer. The new tripod/ head combination looks very solid and stable. I've never heard about this brand before. It looks very similar to the german tripodbrand "Berlebach" which produces tripods made out of wood as well.

You are correct. I did look into that brand as well. it's quite popular. I would say anything that will hold the camera steady is a perfect choice. Thanks for watching!

I also have an a Reis A250 head Spencer and I love it - but I paired it with a Gitzo GT5533LS. This combo works really well for me. Good luck Spencer when you get to Death Valley - thanks so much for the great video!

Awesome looking tripod - though I'm not sure I could live without an adjustable center column personally - but wow!...

    Beautiful tripod Spencer!
I looked into buying one a couple years back, the J series legs and head, when I started to get serious with my 4x5. No other tripod beats there stability. Just can't justify the expense to my wife at the moment with a perfectly good Really Right Stuff legs and ball head. It was perfect for my Canon 5Dmk3

Awesome, way to go all out with Ries! Thanks for supporting them and buying USA. I wish I could afford a new Ries tripod. I got a used J100 and J250 head though it doesn't hold up well with a heavy 8x10 and lens with the bellows racked out long for portraits! If I got the J250-2 head that would probably help the most - as you need all those elbow-bands (?) to hold tight tension - especially when loading vertical film holders.

Appreciate the comment! If you have seen my previous videos, like the one I did at Hillsborough River State Park, I used my lighter Manfrotto which can get the job done, however it's not the best. This new Ries is much sturdier however, much heavier. I just got the case for it and we'l see how that goes. Thanks for watching!

wow, could put a 18" gun on this thing, but nice and precise.
a couple of other alternatives are the manfrotto 028 and 058 studio tripods, they have a larger column, geared& locked by knobs, and has a similar leg style, ie two part guying to a central post, which has the foot on it; and for heads, an Arca-Swiss C1 cube, if not a D 4, which can handle a MF 2 &1/2 KG camera and lens set up with ease!!- not sure about the 8 x 10 though?

It’s a beast for sure! I’ll have to check out that system you mentioned. I’ve also put together a light weight tripod from Induro. I made a separate video for it. Thanks for watching!

@@SpencerPullenPhotography I shoot 4x5" a Sinar monorail, and another option came my way in lieu of second hand at a camera store, a Marsace MT-3541S with a Benro BV8H video head a video head with a systematic style tripod with a 75mm bowl adaptor for the BV8H head, this takes the weight, and with such beefy legs, should handle the "off center weight" that this sinar can produce, esp. in macro, with extensions and a 210 or so lens.
After having a look, and feeling the counter balance, this should allow pan and tilt without losing control of an assembled monorail, and the extendable pan bar is extra insurance against this. [the pan bar is the only external handle that can obstruct anything, and it can fold down tight to the legs for easy transport]- a key consideration when going out with the rig.

I have aTripod that I was thinking about upgrading because with my Hasselblad on it. The tripod just isn't stable enough. Because of the lower legs they are just to thin for the heavy Hasselblad. Howe er I just bought a new Chamonix F1 4x5 camera and it is so light the tripod does fantastic job. Still thinking about buying a Carbon fiber tripod though since my Chamonix is partial made of carbon fiber. I looked at the smaller Ries tripod but I really want a light set up for back packing.

That's great you were able to use your existing tripod. That is going to be an issue with this one, trying to find out the best way to hike with it. I'm hoping the case will make it doable! Thanks for watching!

Nice! -- Did you consider a surveying tripod? Not only do they seem to be cheaper, but have to be certified according to ISO 12858-2 concerning their load bearing capability, precision and stability.

    • @SpencerPullenPhotography
      @SpencerPullenPhotography  6 років тому +1

buyaport I have looked into them. However, the challenge is dealing with the 5/8 hole in the base. I’m sure something could be rigged up to work. Thanks!

Aluminium instead of cast, one would assume 'cast' to be iron, aka stainless steel, so in that train of thought, the weight capacity should decline if going to aluminium, as it is a softer metal.

I started out with a Gitzo tripod (for backpacking) back in the early 80's but the legs would "freeze up" in cold weather. However for "normal" use I preferred my Bogen 3050, which I believe was Manfrotto's heaviest duty tripod. It could drop all three legs simultaneously (similar to today's Manfrotto 058 Triaut tripod). But then I bought the early Zone VI (modified Wista) 4x5 wood field camera and so of course updated to the Zone VI lightweight wood tripod. Same combo I have today. It's a gorgeous over heavy duty tripod with an equally heavy duty tripod bag. Question: Did you ever consider the Zone VI heavy duty tripod for 8x10 since you use a Zone VI 8x10 camera? By the way, I've included some of your videos in my fairly new Zone VI Studios/Fred Picker video playlist. Check it out: ua-cam.com/play/PLTgHf_B4Eipbz0DMxI0jutRXJo9aJfXRi.html And please let me know if there are some other videos I might consider putting in the playlist.

Thanks for stopping by! When I was doing research on a heavier tripod, all of the input kept pointing back to Ries. After using it a few times and traveling with it, the set up I got is a bit overkill. If I were to do it over again, I would consider other tripods (not to mention the price!) Glad to hear some of this was useful and I’ll checkout your playlist. Thanks!

Spencer Pullen ya I remember checking out the Ries line of tripods back in the 80's before settling on the Zone VI. And I had considered moving up to 8x10, but when I discovered that using a TLR was actually my favorite way of shooting, I abandoned the 8x10 idea. I also got rid of my 35mm outfit. So now it's just the modified Wista, my Sinar and a Yashica Mat 124G. For awhile I had a wood tripod for the medium format, but don't remember what brand it was. I just use a Bogen 3021 now.
