The 4x5 camera is a Combo SCII RS monorail camera, we used Caltar-S II 150mm f5.6 lens with it, and HP5+ 4x5 black and white film
expired Polaroid film we used is the 405 Polaroid 4x5
The 8x10 is an Eastman View, we used a Fujinon W 250mm f6.7 lens to shoot HP5+ 8x10 film
and a Cooke Lens 13.3" f6.5 made by Taylor Taylor & Hobson when we shot paper
Photo paper was Ilford multigrade and the Positive paper was also from Ilford
all images have minimum to no editing, just some dust removed, contrast and exposure corrected
Video filmed with Canon g7x, edited with Premiere Pro CC

Glad to see that you are enjoying large format. Lately, I've been watching a lot of videos with Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, who shoots with a very large 8x10.
Contrary to popular belief, film is not dead. The larger the format, the more you're forced to slow down and think about the process.. which is usually a good thing!

Ahhhh! This made me happy! I shot 4x5 and 8x10 for a living, I'm glad you got to experience it! This style of photography makes you think more and study your subject and plan your shot. Especially when it's $10 everytime you click the shutter! You should also explore Polaroid tranfers. When you see your image come up in the developer the first time, it's magical. That guy was super nice to walk you through the experience. Props to him.

yes, it does get addictive, Hence the poison logos on the focus cloth, there is silver under there, granted, but just seeing the dof of some of those portraits inside of Drew, totally addictive!!!; this video really shows off the power of this kind of out of focus affect, and it's creative uses.

That photo at the very end is amazing. Other than the newton rings and the dust. If you do a wet mount and get it printed super big, that'd be incredible

I developed the habit of cocking/firing the shutter once just before inserting the film holder. This ensures I didn't forget to close the shutter after focusing. I ruined a couple of sheets of film when I forgot to close the shutter. The "test firing" of the shutter ensures I am ready to insert the film/recock the shutter. This step may be unnecessary for others but I find it helpful.

The output of this old technology is phenomenal.
It really makes me appreciate the history of photography and cameras as a whole.
The shallow depth of field is nothing but stunning and (as of now) only achievable with large format film cameras.
It's amazing how authentic the photographs look.
As if you took them in the 80's.
You really did a fantastic job.

  • @dougthomson5544

Irene, I have used 4x5 cameras for over 50 years and it delights me that you are experimenting in the medium. Large format forces a photographer to focus on the subject in a way that is difficult to emulate in digital photography. It is slow and methodical and every piece of film is both expensive in time and money. I still have a Horseman monorail studio camera and an Ebony SV45U2 … all my lenses are NIKKOR in Copal shutters. The Horseman is a solid and efficient studio camera and the Ebony is a work of art, field camera that was hand built by Hiromi Sakanashi in Tokyo. Ebony closed its doors in 2016, not from lack of demand, but simply because Mr. Sakanashi retired. The Ebony, made of ebony or mahogany and titanium is a meld of tradition and technology. I love it. I no longer print images on silver paper, but rather digitize the negatives and print on a large format printer.

great video, By the way, Irene, the Tripod is a Manfrotto 074 + a 029 3 way head; we (LF photographers) use these as they can collectively hold 9Kg's of weight, NOT generally the weight of the Mono-rail 😃, BUT you have to consider times when Both standards are on one end of the rail, and you have the head pointed at a flower, or boat off the jetty, ie with the rail pointed downward!- a lot of off centre load is put onto the legs, this 9Kg's is a SAFETY margin, for these circumstances!!

Beautiful model, and will check out the backdrop site. One thing you forgot to mention is to make sure the 'viewing' lever on the lens is closed before removing the dark slide! I sold my Saunders 4x5 dichroic enlarger and switched to digital printing, although I still can develop 4x5 film.

One thing you didn't explain is the satisfaction you get at the end of all the processes. For me digital just doesn't have that. A nice effort. Thank you for posting it.

one other comment, on re-watching, I noticed a 'misunderstanding' you had, at 4:08 it is not "a little tilt shift affect", as the depth of field in this style of camera is a LOT shallower, hence the lens's only being f5.6 or f9 this is because wide open the dof is so thin that a little shift goes a long way, esp. if you have a wide lens, which exaggerates perspective, so you can't stray to far from zero, or you will distort, or lose coverage (vignette). This is a BIG tilt & shift affect, as this is where the 35 mm cameras got the term, and the lens from.
