As a non-fan of the games, I had a really good time with this. The acting was great and it was sufficiently creepy throughout. I'm looking forward to the inevitable sequel.
I'm a FNAF super fan. Tattoos and everything. And during the movie I had a really hard time thinking how someone not neck-deep in the fandom would see this movie. So this was a good and thankfully kinder review than what I expected. All the things you have beef with are valid from a critic's stance but make perfect sense to a FNAF fan. This is really the kind of movie that non-fans need to Mst3k Mantra through. Don't think too much about it, just enjoy the cute robots.
I actually saw this movie in theatres yesterday with a friend, got a VIP seat and I thought it was pretty enjoyable, the acting is alright and the effects were actually really nice. But the scares were weak and it did drag at parts. Its funny how I remember hearing about a FNAF movie back in Primary School and I graduated Secondary School a few Months ago and its finally out.
The babysitter was sent there BY the aunt to try to get dirt on Mike. It's never explained how he hired her but she was in the diner scene where they talk about breaking into Freddy's and she's killed off during the breakin which is why she never shows up again and Mike ends up taking his sister to the job with him. I enjoyed this movie but I do agree that the break-in plot was just plain stupid as Mike wasn't even there (it was daytime after all).
It was because they were supposed to make it look like he didn't lock up the place, I think. Granted the big garage door they opened should have still been opened so it still doesn't make sense but whatever.
Well, guess this is yet another film I have a hot take on, because….I honestly loved it. I enjoyed the haunted animatronic concept and thought the performances were pretty solid. Also, it was great seeing Hutcherson and Lillard again. Always thought those two were underrated.
I'm looking forward to seeing this movie, mainly just to see how they adapted the games, given the franchise's story had always been constantly vague and changes over time. With Mike, all I know about him was that he was just the name of the player character of the original game and since he was just a blank slate, they had to give him some form of personality for this movie. Until I see the movie for myself, all I can say is that it's pretty cool that they got Jim Henson's Creature Shop to create the animatronics and how accurate their designs are to how they looked in the original FNAF.
The fact that the animatronics are done with real models instead of CG made them so much better, I think. Even the best CGI can't replicate a thing actually being on the set with the performers.
I thought it was hilarious that Vanessa scolds Mike at one point for sleeping on the clock as if she wasn't farting away her work time spending hours just hanging out in this abandoned arcade
I thought the Mario movie had pacing issues, but this movie makes me want to apologize to the Mario movie (which I like anyways) and be its slave just for saying that
My son is a huge FNAF fan and went to see it with his aunt. He's 12 and freaked out during the scares and had to leave. I doubt we will be watching it again. Thanks for the review.
I've followed the games and lore for all 9 years, I enjoyed the movie but I still agree with almost all of your points here. It was kind of weak as a HORROR movie but as a fan it was an absolute joy. Honestly I'm surprised you didn't say anything about how weird Night 4 at the pizzeria was. If you know, you know. It was both super odd but also adorable at the same time.
1:28- to be fair when Hutcherson saw this go down the kid was by himself and the dad of that kid did pull on the kid’s arm like he was kidnapping him since the kid was resisting, sure he jumped the gun a little and the kid was probably just being a brat. So I don’t completely blame hucherson for doing what he did especially since if you don’t properly treat your trauma in a healthy way people like him are prone to lash out and with how the mentally Ill are treated by society (especially with lack of funding) this sadly is a common occurrence. In the end I felt that this was a somewhat realistic portrayal of how trauma can bring the worst out of someone without proper treatment. Doesn’t excuse his actions, but does at least explain it a little As for the sabotage plan, they do imply that he didn’t lock one part of the shop entirely, and because one of his jobs was to “make sure people don’t get in” it would be his fault if they did, it makes no real sense, but I do know of people who have gotten reprimanded by a superior for issues like it happened in the movie, the only real issue was the movie never made it clear that there was an easy way in or if It was a forced entry, otherwise I could see where the hole in that plan would fall through, but it’s only said through dialogue that he may have forgotten, but I wished the movie showed it rather than said it. Lastly, I do agree that it may not be scary, but it was mostly made in the mind that the biggest demographic for this film are not only fans of the game (who seemed to love this film) but kids who recognize the characters and the complicated lore, so the movie was largely made with kids in mind, I do wish there could have been a middle ground for fans and non fans, but it’s at least harmless enough as a family horror film
The Five Nights At Freddy's movie is exactly that - a FNAF movie. It's made for people who love the games. It's not perfect, but it's fun and a neat homage to the series and its universe. If the FNAF games aren't your thing, the movie won't be either. I happened to enjoy it - already seen it twice and plan to buy it when it comes out on home video.
I had a VERY different experience here. Yes, the performances are all pretty overdone, this thing is DRENCHED in cheese, but I figured that was intentional, and I thought everyone did a pretty good job with the premise. If you're not at all familiar with the franchise, I'd call it around a 6 or 7/10- you can absolutely find better, but it'll entertain. If you _are_ a fan of the franchise, this thing is a *treat,* easily 8-10 range- the fanservice oozes from every crack, but (with one exception in the final climax) I thought it was very well done, it never felt like it detracted from what was going on.
Most of my experience with this franchise is mainly from watching Markiplier's let's play of the franchise over the years (apparently he was supposed to play the security guard in the beginning trying to escape, but scheduling conflicts prevented that happening, at least we got a MatPat cameo), can't really call the worst horror film of the year (there's already two I'm thinking of that are legitimately worse) but I think it's harmless fun if you're a kid or a fan, though Matthew Lillard as the villain was so much fun and made me nostalgic for his time playing Stu Maucher in the first Scream
I think the movie was elevated by two performances, and it's Matthew Lillard and the creature shop. And this is coming from someone who thought the film was okay, even as a fan of the franchise.
You're better off watching Banana Splits. Its more fun and over the top. Since this movie is PG-13, you know what type of jumpscares and horror you'd get. Thank God this was free on peacock because I would never pay a ticket to see this garbage.

Matthew Lillard is so fucking good in every role. A true acting treasure!
Matthew Lillard is Matthew Lillard in every movie.
There's people saying The Banana Splits horror movie and that one with Nicolas Cage in it was better.

I don't see how those animatronics (sp?) could be that scary. They really are too goofy.
This movie lacked a lot. What a shame...
EDIT: At least Matthew Lillard killed it as [REDACTED TO AVOID SPOILERS]
He basically confirmed it the moment he was casted, I don't think there's a need to hide it.

I’m glad I’m not the only that thought that Matthew Lirad wasn’t subtle at all
I'd rather watch Willy's Wonderland, That one has Nicholas FUCKING Cage going a mix of John Wick and DOOM SLAYER on haunted animatronics.

I prefer Nick Cage's version. Haven't seen Banana Splits.
