Trust a runescape player to bot pokemon
It kinda makes me sad that there is so many potentially great botting challenges akin to this that will never exist (or at-least never go mainstream) because they ban bots. Nothing wrong with that, of course they have to ban bots, but I do kinda wish they had a version of the game, separate from the main game, that allowed you to macro and bot to your hearts content.

If there's one thing that i contempt, is the shiny hunters, they spend thousads of hours for a shitty skin that shinies, no matter how low the chances are, they have no better thing to do. I bet the devs laughed hard that people like this exists, they can low the chances even more and the idiots will never concede. Making a bot that makes the repetitive job for you it's the natural solution, but games that makes you search for a bot are a shit.

yeah this is up there as one of the most absurd pokemon projects ive seen lol, this is the kind of thing that drives ai in scifi to self awareness and insanity. godspeed lil bot

At 14 seconds per encounter, a 1% shiny Seedot would take an average of ~4 months to appear. Yeah sounds like we're gonna be here for a long while :')

Shame this got recommended to me so late. This is amazing. I've been dreaming of completing a shiny living dex forever. I know it's probably impossible with old full odds but I keep at it anyway. I'm around 40 shinies deep into HGSS, currently at my longest hunt with 33785 encounters. Stoked to see where this project goes.
You really haven't missed too much haha
It ain't worth it bro. Shiny hunting is only good in Legends Arceus, or Gen 2 where it's 1/50 eggs, or in later gens when it becomes a cakewalk.

After over 1000hrs into my ORAS playthrough I've completed up to the Hoenn DEX as full shiny. And I completed the full living dex up to SWSH. Still working on completing my SWSH living dex.. Keep up the good work.. Its the biggest struggle is the legendaries. Not all of them can be shiny from portals TT-TT
I’ve been watching the stream almost daily since this video was uploaded, finally beating the first gym will be very satisfying.
I bought a Ruby cartridge just to soft reset for a shiny Treecko, took me on and off 8 months to finally get the bastard.

Fun fact comments section! As of July 20, 2024, this bot is still waiting for the second Seedot. 3,587,000 encounters, 425 total shinies. The quest for Seedot 2 has been happening since August 27, 2023. 328 days of nothing but praying for the second Seedot.
Thoughts for future you:
Chinchou's Illuminate ability or trapinch's arena trap will increase the encounter rate.
Magnet pull or Static/Lightningrod can up the encounters of Steel- or Electric-types, respectively, if youre ever in a situation where you need shinies of those types last on a given route.
Sticky hold & Suction cups guarantee fishing encounters.
I'm surprised they hadn't calculated any of that in, nor thought of using the shny charm. I guess they want to see how long it would take to do i the hard way?
*EDIT* Shiny charms were released in B2W2, I didn't realise this.
the shiny charm did not exist until 8 years after this game came out
repels would make a lot of this stuff easier, though they don’t help with seedot unfortunately

Breeding with a Pokémon with Flame Body would still improve changes and be available in this game, no?
Getting to the daycare, doing breeding with a foreign ditto and carry a Flame Body Pokémon and 5 eggs in your party would still be faster than rawdogging this game's RNG, and going gym-by-gym.

the whole point of the challenge is to get everything before the respective gyms, so unless you're using walk through walls breeding isn't an option here. breeding would save a ton of time for the third seedot though, hopefully he thinks to do that

Thanks for the heads up, yeah, we only soft reset for the starters since it was easy to re-roll TID and SID, but legendary SRs will definitely need to be run aways. I've already written and tested the run away method for Rayquaza and it works well 😁

After seeing grotesque acts of bot torture like this, basically asking the bot to scour the equivalent of the ocean looking for shinies, if AI ever decides to eradicate humanity I'm starting to sympathize with it.
? Would you be mortally offended at a ai for being a bit rough opening and closing a wooden door, a Terminator style ai has about as much in common with a bot like this as you do to the door

See, the instinct I would have in writing a bot to do this would be to veer this towards RNG manipulation internal to the bot, like, make it figure out the inputs it needs on the fly to manip a given shiny, but I don't actually know if the RNG is scrutable enough to do it that way
It’s very easy and very boring.
You can generate a list of future encounters with info on their shininess and encounter slot (which Pokémon it is) and it’d just be sitting there in the grass waiting for a couple minutes or even hours if particularly unlucky waiting to click sweet scent on a specific frame.
That’s not the point of the bot. Anyone can RNG manipulate to get shinys

I love how the bot is missing essential features to complete the run, but it doesn't even matter because there is so much time till it will need those, that the missing stuff can easily be implemented.

I've played gen 3 Pokémon (regular games, hacks, new gen games but in gen 3 style) for ~1000 hours in total and I've only seen ~5 shinies (including a Kyogre during one of the many resets), so needless to say that it amazes me whenever I see people grinding for a shiny. And the fact this bot grinded for 2.5 months nonstop - and still no big progress - tells you everything you need to know about shiny hunting lol

so far, since the bot began searching for the last nut, we're already at a phase percentage above 90%. we're getting so damn unlucky. why not at this point haha
I spent, I don't even know how many, hours, playing Emerald as a child. Hundreds of hours.
And I don't remember ever even seeing a Shiny.
Edit: While playing on an emulator, I found a shiny Golbat after 100h+ in game (speed up on many occasions).
Same here. My brother had one shiny his entire time playing Sapphire (a Nincada) and that's the only one I ever saw.

This is an interesting way to point out what a waste of time shiny hunting is.
you might be able to change the encounter rates by having your lead pokemon be the highest level that the pokemon you're looking for can be (or 1 lower maybe idr), if that is higher than the highest level some of the other encounters can be. (but you'll have to repel)
How does the bot work when you encounter a shiny? Damn man, this is insane and very interesting!
It is programmed to put them to sleep with Spore (Breloom) and catch them with premier balls (we have a ton of money and items from grinding items with a team of Zigzagoon with the Pickup ability)

This is so cool! I did this challenge with Pokemon black and white (not with a bot) and I didn't even make it past the first gym! (20% purrloin way too hard lol) I'm a computer science student, would love to try making something like this for black/white sometime!

I've been researching for a few days and plan to use the Desmume emulator. I mapped the memory, but I still haven't found the memory location responsible for the Inputs ( A, B, X, Y, L, R, Select, Start and more). I looked on the internet but with my knowledge I haven't found anything so far. I find in the memory the address of items bag and the trainer money. It's so cool change a value in the memory and to be a rich, LOL or have 999 MasterBalls.

Feebas will be fun I'm sure. Pre-looking up "How to" guides on the internet had me fishing up and down that river system every single night when I was young. Hundreds of tiles covered over the course of a Summer. I eventually learned how to manipulate the spawn locations for them, but I had no idea of that until AFTER I had already gotten one.
Since this seems to be done on emulator, meaning the .sav file is easily accessible, there's a program that can read that save file and tell you the exact tile where the Feebas encounter is, so I don't think it'll be that big of an issue.
This is the only thing keeping me going rn 😂

You know that hypothetical scenario someone came up with where all AIs will eventually evolve to the point where they merge into one big self-aware hyper-AI that will decide whether or not humanity deserves to continue living based upon how people have treated AIs until that point?
This bot is all the evidence it'd need to kill us all, and it would be justified in doing so.

I just realized Shiny hunting is like going for super rare drops in osrs. I can’t escape.
So after using bot I see a way of improving it by combining mathematics of programs like pokefinder and eon timer to find your secret id and time frame after soft reset to guarantee shiny encounter. I will try to make some standalone script just for timing this weekend if I get some free time.

Genuine question:
Why not run the emulator at 3x speed or higher if the bot can make inputs at the same speed it would at 1x?
You’d be gathering the same information, since the same inputs would be made as if it was 1x (just tuned faster to the same degree as the emulator is what I’m imagining). I’m no programmer so forgive me if this is not possible. But I don’t understand 1x as a steadfast rule.
Either way, really cool concept and I can see you put a lot of work into the bot!
