- The US prison system sees a lot of people. Men, women, lawyers, teachers, people raised in poverty, and people raised in luxury. But the one person you’d be very hard-pressed to find in a prison is a genius, someone not only smarter than all of the other prisoners and all of the guards, but an overwhelming majority of the outside human population as well. So what happens when a genius does go to prison? Let’s find out…
If you're new here, my name is Andy Jiang and I do vigorous, detailed dives into some of the most fascinating, bizarre, and unreal true stories that are out there. Subscribe and turn on all post notifications so you don’t miss any of my weekly uploads!

"oh no what have you done, you've made a fool of everyone" - Oasis
That’s our horrible legal system. Someone who could’ve done amazing things for this world instead was wrongly incarcerated and mistreated into insanity and addiction.
Turned a non problematic person into one
Exactly what I thought, so sooo sad :(
A life in prison for basically taking what's yours, so shitty
@@SMCwasTaken his choice my ass
Falsely incarcerating people is straight up demonic
@@koraptd6085 1+1=3 and 9+10=21
@@SMCwasTakenRetard moment.
Oh dang.. this broke me. Literally. Poor Mark.. What a cruel world we live in.
Lol soft
@@im_testingesp Being soft and caring is not a problem but being brutally cruel is.
Yeah, i feel bad for mark :(
@@im_testingesp it's not called being soft, it's called having empathy for other humans
Not world, just US.
This is absolutely heartbreaking. All that happened, the imprisonment, the injustice, all because his stepmother didn't like him. He could have contributed loads to society, made millions, all stopped by his stepmother refused to let him have what his dad left him.
Like what Lucy Liu said in Kill Bill: " TEAR THE B*TCH APART!!!!"
And she probably threw all the tools away.
@@lisajswan yeah. Its devastating.
HE COULD BEING ELON MUSK
40 yrs in prison.... All stemming from an hateful, evil stepmother. What a waste of life
This story really puts into perspective just how one person's decision can make or break a person's entire life. His step-mom directly ruined her stepson's life when he could have ended up peacefully building jet aircraft from mason jars and toothpicks.
He could've been Tony Stark. And that was robbed from him.
THIS GUYS COULD HAVE CHANGE THE WORLD
ELON MUSK HE COUDL BEING
If only his mental issues was addressed earlier and someone other than his father loved him... How many people in prison are just like Mark.
He did not have mental illness.
@@lordslane6956 but he definitely got it later in prison
@lords lane Actually that's not a fact just an opinion. You are also wrong.
@@lordslane6956 You're just wrong.
I bet there are a few peoples lives whirling like marks did rn
Let's hope that this video sheds on light on this story enough so that enough public backlash sparks and Mark DeFriest gets finally out of prison.
Would be nice, but if a documentary didn't do that then why would you think this video would?
Never happens in the US. Only happens in South Korea
But now he's old...
Did you at least sign his petition?
Nvm they’re closed 😢
This was about someone who could have completely changed the world for the better if it weren’t for corruption in our society.
Wait what? He jumped out of a multiple story building, broke both his feet upon impact, scaled a barbed wire fence, and ran for 2 miles right after?
yup. it’s ridiculous how powerful adrenaline can be, I guess he just didn’t feel the pain
Dude, He Was In The WORST Prison, For How Many Years?
If You're In His Position, Would You Let Your Broken Legs Stop You From Escaping That Hell?
@@andyyjiangI hope his stepmother is in hell.
What a 🐩
You can tell Jiang loves making these long form stories, because he has literally no reason to and could just keep pumping the shorts for ages.
This is a story of a man who got betrayed by the system. It makes me sad.
On the other hand, your storytelling keeps on getting better. Keep it up, Andy!
You don’t deserve just 1.5 million. You deserve at least 10 mil. These long videos and shorts are absolutely crazy and consistent. They never fail to amaze me
yea he definitely deserves 1.6 mil
And this specific video in particular deserves more than 25k ish views, maybe multiply that by 100 or something and now we're talking
He doesn't deserve 10 million, he deserves 20 million.
@@staticostrich4689 the views on this video is definitely criminal. Should at least be in the millions.
Perfect example of our courts being a legal system and not a justice system. This is a ridiculous abuse of government power.
Incredibly sad. This is a great story, Andy, I’m glad you chose it.
This is the first time I’ve watched one of your long form episodes. I’m going to have to go back and rewatch them all now.
My guy this is simply one of the best things you've done today ;D
His vids are the best
let’s goo! I’m glad you gave them a shot man
@@andyyjiang hey man if you're reading this, i hope and i know you're videos is going to explode.
very good, they are
truly sad, the avalanche effect of a simple mistake that could be easily avoided
just shows that sometimes you take one wrong turn and you can’t turn around
His stepmother literally ENDED HIS LIFE
If she had just been a decent human being she would have let him have the tools and he wouldn't be in jail longer then most murderers. This is such a sick story and the people who locked this genius up is the true mentally I'll one
People shouldn't be punishing Mark for his enginewty, they should give him more tools to work with. To see how smart he really is and how that can be used to helps others, and maybe it could help Mark if he could do something good to help others around him without actually having to interact with them
I, too, was incarcerated unfairly like Defriest, and I, too, am dumbfounded by the reality of this so-called "justice system".
Cheers for making more people aware of his story. I am traumatized for life after what I've been through.
Poor guy. He just wanted his Dad's tools ☹
They turned someone who could've made a big difference into an addicted criminal. That's just awful..
Honestly all Mark faced was underserved he wasn't violent nor did he commit any crimes prior to his first conviction shame on his stepmother, she likely did all that because she despised him. I mean who cares whether or whether not he stole those tools she was likely never going to make use of them.
I can relate to this guy 100 percent , if I hate some place , I am leaving no questions
Me too
Wow. These stories are just wild. This one in particular is sad, because like Andy said, this guy could’ve been so good for the world.
All this time in prison, and he literally didn't hurt a single person. In fact, it was him who got hurt the most because of it.
I mean, you could probably consider drugging people with like 10 tabs of LSD so they start doing things like try to fight a washing machine as hurting people.
Also if we include other types of hurt beyond just physical harm, he probably mentally harmed people by threatening them with a zip gun, and financially harmed people by stealing numerous cars and crashing into a living room (which was reckless and could’ve easily physically harmed people).
To be clear, he absolutely was mistreated, but he’s not totally harmless.
@@TBH_Inc do police officers go to prison when destroying private property in the function of his duties? Do a person that deserves to be free and has the moral right of doing so should do as well?
@@TBH_Inc the point is mostly that the legal system made an unproblematic person into a person who's literally drugging hospital personnel just to get away from captivity.
I hope that this evil stepmom got karma for destroying his life! I mean he was beaten up and sexually abused by 14 men so brutally that he needed a surgery. Damn, this is soooooo sad and makes me angry, that this stepmom's dumb revenge actions led him spending the rest of his life in prison! This is inhumane!!!!
Much like Andy Dufresne, Mark had to go to jail to become a criminal. Without that first arrest he would have lived his life out of jail.
I am so happy that through longer story version, Andy can show more of his personality. Again, i really enjoyed the story!😊
Absolutely HORRIFIC! Agreed Andy HEART WRENCHING, INFURIATING, AND HORRIFYING!
All these so-called authorities 😢... this shows how broke the system is! Can anyone show those man Mercy. Their must be someone or some organization that will pick up his case. Find him a home or an area we're he can research
I have to say I really like your long form videos. This is a major miscarriage of justice all because his story mother hated him and wouldn't give him his father's tools which were his anyway. This is what happens when you show the world that you're a genius and smarter than the people in charge, truly very sad
Dude, if you let him go with the option to exact revenge on humanity. He would probably just asked for his dads tools and be left alone.
That is so sad and inhumane, no words, I'm 60 years old, I couldn't imagine, love your videos.
No one rewards you for being good
But they punish you for being different
What a fascinating story! Oh, by the way… I’m over 50 and absolutely love your videos! ❤
I'm 48.
All because his evil stepmother wouldn’t let him have his own tools. Very sad story.
Literal children have more shorter tantrums then those guards
The fact the evil woman deleted all her social medias after this case blew up and went viral because people went after her like hounding her
She should be scared because she aint brave since she cowers behind a mask of being a powerful person
A genius gets sentenced to a floridian prison after a false accusation that was added on to a real crime they committed and tries to escape.
It's literally plot of JoJo's part 6
He's a JoJo 😭😭
OK... Wow. I've watched hidden stories since you first uploaded, and every one of them is a banger! You are an amazing storyteller!
So glad for a new non short upload! You're the best Andy!
That poor man deserves better than this, the damn justice has ruined such a brilliant mind with such foolish decisions. I hope one day that roams free and finally gets better as time goes on…
Also I love the way you tell these interesting stories in those videos, keep up the good work ❤
That’s a damn shame, sometimes the best people are destroyed for no reason
As a person diagnosed with autism and having been stuck in treatment programs like this for over 9 years, I feel for mark. He seems to at least have autistic traits and deserves better than this I’m praying for him ❤
He is on the autistic spectrum and has aspergers. He also has savant syndrome which is typically an effect of autism, neuro developmental disorder or some form of brain damage or trauma. 😕
Andy I’m 67, and for him to spend fourth years in prison in this case is appalling. This is so heartbreaking.
I just searched and HE HAS LITERALLY BEEN IN PRISON FOR LIKE 40 YEARS THIS IS CRAZY THERE NEEDS TO BE A CAP TO THIS
This is a horrible story about Mark. As you said, this is all because he went to get the tools that his father wanted him to have and a stepmother that didn't let him take them. He has a mind that could have been helpful to our world, instead he has been caged up and suffered endless pain.
It still amazes me how every story is better than the last…
honestly sad that these stories dont get more views. these are amazing!
this video was a rollercoaster of emotions like jesus christ I feel bad for Mark
the stepmom is the one to blame for ruining his life, he could've created a lot of things if only he didn't get into prison
@@therealtime34 there's a difference between reasons and excuses. His stepmom is a reason why he did what he did, but not an excuse. There wasn't an excuse for why he decided to escalate a 4 year sentence to a life sentence, but there were reasons.
There are a lot of people in prison that don't deserve it but OMFGoodness this poor guy 💔💔💔
Our Justice System is so fucked up bro imagine if he didn’t run away and there was no corruption or no corrupt cops on the beginning saying he had a gun which landed him in jail
I feel so sad such a genius like him is put in prison.... And murder rapists... Etc etc walks away freely
Definitely deserves more publicity absolutely beautiful video
There's no Legality in the legal system. There's corruption left and right and peoples judged for their crimes are NOT given sentence based of their crimes. He does not deserve all of this.
They keep saying he is mentally ill but they dont say how they know..
Another great video! I really love these long format video! They bring out the full potential of your storytelling abilities!
The criminal justice system needs to change for the better
The fact that his stepmom was willing to ruin his whole life for no reason is insane
Here’s to hoping this goes viral some day so this man can finally be freed and get the help he needs. It’s never too late for him to use his talents to help the world.
Lol i couldn't comment on the full story but i feel so old now 😂..not under thirty but i love the content and you're becoming at ease in front of the camera with the longer episodes!
Cops said he pulled a gun... Not surprised
Dam the fact that is can relate so much to this guy having no social skill, always talking back to people but at the same time being the dumbest person I know is just insane. Also his case is just a really sad example of the worst person at the worst time 😢
Thank you for sharing this story. It is extremely sad to hear how his life was wasted away in prison. Andy, you are so young and yet your storytelling skills keep me glued to my screen just to listen to you and I am over 50. You're 💯👏🏼🔥
Mark shoots a gun at the wall:"ATTEMPTED MURDER!"
Guards beat him for 11 days straight:"Thats fine."
Like, what the shit.
The fact he got blamed for doing drugs in a place like prison is JUST WRONG.
this story makes me unbelievably angry my god. great video
Another long story, hell yeah!
im loving these long form content so much! i love the series in general!
Man poor mark .... :(
Thank you for going out of your way to make this video. This made my day I just got out of surgery and I’m so bored.❤

Sober staff member: "Hm. Y'know, I have this funny feeling that something might be amiss here. It's normally at least noon before Larry starts beating the appliances."
You do a great job Andy. ❤ Poor Mark. :(
And all started by a spiteful & pedantic woman. Karma, stepmother, karma...
I'm hoping the step-mother is still around to realize and never be allowed to forget what she did to him.

Wow, amazing story! I love these longer videos, keep up the great work!
I LOVE your stories!!! You are the ONLY account that I have "ring that bell" for! Loll can't wait for your next story!!! ❤
Andy you are so commendable. I too am severely pissed off about this. He's so brilliant and nobody allows his genius to flourish. My God what this man has gone through. That step mother of his deserves to be flogged
So very sad what our ( USA) criminal court system does in the guise of Justice when in fact it's all about the numbers. The number of deal's resulting in conviction and if you can tack on a harsh sentence, then you and another feather in your cap.
I have enjoyed your content from the beginning. I am grateful for your longer content while still continuing to appreciate the shorts as well.
Keep up the excellent work.
You should do Cruzan v Missouri. The niece of Nancy lives in our hometown, and told us the story a few months ago, and I think you would like to cover it.
This one's really well hidden, thanks for this gem Andy.
I already know its gonna be a nice story and video, keep it up Andy!!!😁
Love your fast-paced retelling of these riveting stories. You're an amalgam of all my favorite UA-cam channels.
This made me so mad and sad all at the same time.
Florida man asks step mother to take his father's tools, gets police called on him, escapes prison seven times out of thirteen attempts, sometimes with self made gun, gets life sentence.
i could see these videos being a netflix series, not stock footage, but with actors acting out what happened, that would be really cool
Justice delayed, is justice denied. William E. Gladstone .
Hi Andy, I have watched many of your shorts but didn't realise you had this channel. Subscribed as I appreciate your content 😁
This guy could’ve made world a better place it it wasn’t for bad people
This happen just because his "evil" stepmother calls the cops on him for claiming the tools his father left for him.
Great story, cheers Andy, Good job on the stories.
Actually, there are a TON of incredibly intelligent people in prison. My parents worked at a prison, and a lot of them are highly intelligent, but used their intelligence in the wrong way for the wrong things!
reminds me of the japanese prison escapists that used miso soup to escape.
He got thrown back in just days after leaving? Because of testing positive on weed or coke? That stuff takes days to be untraceable in your system. Meaning he literally didn’t even have enough time to test negative. So he could have not even been using them and still got thrown back. I suggest that we riot at the gate of that prison to get him released because he doesn’t deserve what was given. Hundreds of beatings by officers, numerous accounts of SA and R, and even literally neglect by guards. And he’s still stuck there. The parole board should be fired and those guards should get punished severely.
I love listening to Andy tell stories I could listen to anything 💯
Ty Andy. Nice to meet you.
Speaking as someone falsely convicted who spent 1000 days in a Georgiaprison before winning his appeal, all I have to say is... yep.
Even after winning my appeal, they wouldn't open the front door and let me out. They don't want to let you go, you're their meal ticket and bread and butter, and nobody escapes. I spent a month more in there before they "processed me out" by shipping me back to the jail I had originated at.
The worst parts of prison are the noise, sensory deprivation, regimentation, overcrowding, lack of privacy, and poor quality and lack of edible food. A lot of trays were throw away trays, and I survived because my folks put money on my books to buy real food off the store. Real food being nothing more than Ramen, Fritos, and Soda. If you can call that real food.
You are such a remarkable story teller, Andy. I look forward to watching you tell stories in the distant future of events that are unfolding at this moment. ❤
