  • Johann Cruyff of the Los Angeles Aztecs scored this terrific goal in overtime to eliminate the Washington Diplomats from the 1979 North American Soccer League playoffs. Oddly enough, Cruyff would end up playing for the Dips in 1980 and again briefly in 1981.

Ironically Johan Cruyff actually played for the Washington Diplomats at one point in his career.

+Kevin Turner That's coincidence, not irony.

thecelebratedmisterk Played for the Dips that were owned by Madison Square Garden, led by former New York Jets owner Sonny Werblin, and when they folded and Washington packed RFK with 50000, the Detroit Expess moved there and became the New Diplomats and Cryuff played with them too.

The Dips signed him up for the following season immediately after he scored against them. If you can't beat 'em, buy 'em!

Aztecs choked every year after 74. Its like they were watching the Rams and trying to outdo the choke. They should have made the Soccer Bowl atleast once. I guess the Rams out did them in 79 but sheesh. Tough to watch both those teams growing up.

why do so many players have their socks rolled down with no shin protection? Crazy!

The theory was that if your opponent wasn't wearing shin guards, that you wouldn't knock him in the shins (much like the idea that if you weren't wearing a helmet in hockey, guys wouldn't go for your head). Don't necessarily agree, but that was the feeling at the time.

Then the Los Angeles Aztecs got knocked out themselves by the Vancouver Whitecaps, who were just light years ahead of everyone in Their Division, including the Aztecs!

I was there, the Caps had to win game 2 at home and then a mini game which they did, never saw Pele or Beckenbauer but I saw Cruyff and Alan Ball
