  • Rollercoasters are certainly a thrilling form of entertainment, but as they and the industry have evolved, they've become so much more. To miss the artistic qualities of the rollercoaster is to miss the hand of the artists that crafted them.

    Bringing up Kumba and Montu made me really nostalgic. Those two were my faovrite coasters as soon as I was tall enough. Hell, I lived in Tampa at the time and remember the day I was tall enough to ride Scorpion the first time when I was like six. I was so glad. (Also I was still too short by a few inches when Montu came out, and was jealous of my taller classmates cuz it looked so cool.

    Something of note about Hagrids that was pointed out to me: The track supports are actually textured to look like wood. A small detail, but a fun one, nonetheless.
    Coasters provide a lot of very important kinetic energy to areas, and parks have realized this, and are honing this to a science. There are so many really good, visually appealing coasters that are opening. For instance, Iron Gwazi has a lot of visually striking elements, such as the Death Roll and the banked turn over the station. Additionally, the entirety of Velocicoaster is a visual marvel.
    I hope that making visually interesting, thrilling coasters is going to become an industry standard.

      As many times as I've been on Hagrid's, I've never noticed that. I'll look for it next time for sure.
      I also agree about your point about kinetic energy. One of my favorite things about Busch Gardens is getting on the Skyride and seeing all the coasters juxtaposed with one another.

    Loved this video! Just home from a few days at Universal Orlando and my first time on Hagrid's Motorbike and, of course, Velocicoaster. They are both works of art and probably my top 2 attractions in Orlando at this point. Ever since Velocicoaster opened, I've been binge watching roller coaster videos and reviews, and I've gained so much appreciation for the different design elements in addition to the thrills. I never thought I'd turn into a coaster enthusiast as I'm nearing middle age, but I'm now making a bucket list of coasters I want to experience all over the world. Thanks again for the wonderful video, and for your channel. I feel like we have many similar "values" when it comes to theme parks and immersive storytelling, and I'm so glad your voice is in the mix, especially since my OG most magical place appears to be going through a bit of an identity crisis these days.

While I enjoy coasters I do definitely prefer a story driven experience over thrills and have often looked down on coasters with a non diegetic track as it takes me out of the immersion and believability, but this has definitely made me think of it in a different light!

    11:00 With all due respect, Revolution is a masterclass on how to pace a roller coaster. The loop, being the primary draw, occurs towards the end of the ride, and the long, drawn out ramp down to it builds anticipation for the then-unique experience of turning upside down. The Roller Coaster Philosopher had a whole article on this; I recommend him highly.

      Hagrid's continues to keep surprising me. No coaster has ever felt so consistently fun to me, no matter how many times I've been on it. The seating position in conjunction with the lateral g's is still pretty unique among coasters, and I think the track layout often gets overshadowed because of the theming. It makes me want to go out to SeaWorld San Antonio and ride Wave Runner.

    Really excellent video. I think that coasters can definitely be architecturally artistic, especially at parks like Cedar Point and Magic Mountain where the park skyline is itself a sort of attraction and a source of excitement.
    I especially enjoyed your section on diegesis and how track integrates into a narrative. It's one of the main reasons Disney doesn't typically have very large coasters. I hear people say that Disney doesn't build giant coasters like B&M hypercoasters because "Disney parks are for kids" but I don't think that's the issue at all. It's that Disney definitely prefers story telling over intensity of forces and diegesis is usually very important to them (except I guess with Tron.) It is very hard to build a gigantic coaster and build enough theming around it while hiding the track or justifying its visibility so the use of mine trains or coasters in the dark is the most straightforward answer. Even in the case of California Screamin', I think many people missed the point. I remember for years people would say "it's not really themed" but they didn't really get it. California Screamin' DEFINITELY was themed but it had the same meta theming that we now see in Velocicoaster. That is that it was a coaster themed to being a coaster. Only in the case of California Screamin', it was a steel coaster themed to being an old wooden coaster on a California boardwalk park like the two Giant Dipper coasters. I actually think that it makes less sense as Incredicoaster from a thematic standpoint than it did as California Screamin', but that gets us into the soul less disaster that Disney has turned DCA into and that's a conversation for another time.
    I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on Verbolten at Busch Gardens Williamsburg or Fire Chaser Express and Mystery Mine at Dollywood. They are all very fun coasters that are significantly elevated by their thematic elements. Mystery Mine features diegetic track (like most mine themed coasters) and Verbolten and Fire Chaser Express feature non-diagetic track. But they are all fantastic experiences and deserve a lot of praise.

    • @PoseidonEntertainment
      @PoseidonEntertainment  2 роки тому

      You make a really good point about California Screamin' and I wished I would have mentioned it, even if it doesn't exist anymore thematically.
      I thought about elaborating more on the coasters you mentioned, but I couldn't find a way to organically fit them into the script. Perhaps sometime later in another video. I have a strong inclination to visit both Busch Gardens Williamsburg and Dollywood this year, so that might be a possibility.

    This is fascinating. As a young boy, a highlight of my year was the state fair, which featured a relatively modest wooden coaster. Of everything I experieced at the fair, this coaster produced the most enduring memory, and not just because of the thrills. Much of what sticks with me is the architectural presence of the coaster.

    • @PoseidonEntertainment
      @PoseidonEntertainment  2 роки тому +1

      That's a good point. To add to that, while I wouldn't consider traveling fairs to necessarily be better than most amusement parks, they do have their own aesthetic and feeling that makes them worthwhile as well.

      @@PoseidonEntertainment Thanks for the response! BTW, I should have mentioned that this is a permanent coaster at the Washington State Fairground in Puyallup, Washington. I really appreciate that you take a stance and make an argument in your video essays. I've often bemoaned large coasters with minimal theming for being eyesores, but that is because I never thought about them as storytelling devices through the track itself. I also love any video highlighting the artistic potential of theme parks and their attractions - they are the future of themed entertainment! There are plenty of informational videos around about coasters/dark rides/etc. but having a stance or opinion or critique that you back up makes your videos stand out. Thank you for changing my mind about the artistic merit of coasters! It will certainly make me complain less the next time I visit a park with seemingly-chintzy storytelling.

    • @PoseidonEntertainment
      @PoseidonEntertainment  2 роки тому +2

      To be fair, a poorly placed coaster can indeed be an eyesore. I really hate the placement of Silver Bullet at Knotts, just sitting in the middle of the park with everything wrapped around it. The poor planning really detracts from its aesthetic appeal.

    • @justgrace1354
      @justgrace1354 2 роки тому +1

      @@PoseidonEntertainment That's true. I haven't been to Knott's Berry Farm yet (it's on my list) but I'm inclined to believe that most coasters are not aesthetically pleasing, with thrills taking priority over story/setting (I know there are some exceptions, some of which you've highlighted). I wish that more thrilling attractions could have better theming or at least landscaping to hide the support beams or the flat space underneath the coaster. However, that probably takes money and effort that many parks don't have, which is why I thought your perspective on the art of coasters is a good one. It keeps me from writing off those coasters that are placed well in a park but are not themed to the nines.

  • @marcussheen

    Your videos are so intelligently put together. One example of coasters being art I'd like to add to the mix are the travelling coasters of Germany, such as Olympia Looping. They are always perfectly and very deliberately arranged so the lift is hidden at the back, and the loops arranged at the front in size order (smallest at the front) so as to showcase the coaster and entice paying riders. Not only are these coasters designed around these principles, but they must also be transportable and extremely high capacity. Combining function and style together like this is such an artform.

      I just looked it up and that's pretty interesting. I wish I had known about that before writing my script, as I definitely would have included it. I love this. I've always thought roller coasters where art. You're the first one to really make a video about it. They are so fascinating and the reason I ride or just watch them, and it has become my main interest from a young age. It's a functional track design to give you adrenaline that happens to look elegant and scary at the same time. So it's kind of like a beautiful car like a Ferrari. It has a function but in it's function it looks beautiful. I'm just waiting for an art gallery to show rollercoasters :) It's also kind of a weird and unique thing when you think about it. A bunch of poles and structures holding up a track that's moving like a snake. And the fact that you can tell alot of world coasters apart from eachother just shows how many interesting layouts you can think of. Btw I liked that you showed my local coaster Baron 1898 after the small break. I was hoping it's design will go on noticed in the world.

    • @PoseidonEntertainment
      @PoseidonEntertainment  2 роки тому +1

      I actually got the inspiration from a video about Rollercoaster Tycoon. I don't remember what it's called or who produced it. I hardly remember what the content of the video even was, but one thing the producer pointed out was how the different elements available to the player can be executed in conjunction with the rollercoasters to create not just functional, but artistic and aesthetically pleasing amusement parks. I don't remember specific points and I can't find the video again, but it certainly helped me develop ideas that eventually evolved into this.
      I also would really like to ride Baron 1898. The only dive coaster I've been on is Sheikra, but most dive coasters strike me as being pretty similar to each other. I like how Baron manages to stand out and be unique with its theming.

    The first coasters weren't always just about function. Premise-themed coasters actually existed as early as the 1890s, with many early coasters simulating trips through the Swiss Alps, the Grand Canyon, or the Venetian Canals. There was even an indoor coaster built in 1905 at Coney Island that simulated a trip through Hades over the River Styx. Walt Disney took inspiration from one of these early themed coasters, the Rutschebanen at Tivoli Gardens, for his Matterhorn coaster at Disneyland. Sadly, the Rutschebanen is the only surviving example of these early themed coasters as the building materials used for theming at that time were usually highly flammable.

Before the thrilling ending with the fire effects and hang time, the riders are subjected to a tension building scene of a canary falling over dead, and a scree showing the mine collapsing in in the riders during a lightning storm. Theming is great, but theming at the expense of the quality of the coaster itself is not my favorite. Universal is amazing, with quality coasters, but I still find myself leaning more towards parks like Cedar Point, as I value thrills over visuals. And you are correct that coasters are works of art themselves. Driving across the the causeway and walking into Cedar Point offers its own kind of visual appeal. Being surrounded by massive steel structures is incredible and immersive in its own way. I do think CP is in a beautiful location as well and has pretty nice landscaping. While I do adore parks like Disney and Universal, it just doesn't compete with riding tons of incredible coasters with friends, laughing and getting high on adrenaline for me. But I try to appreciate each park for what it offers, as each park is unique in its own way.

But Hagrid's is still a fantastic ride with beautiful theming. And I totally understand its popularity and that it's targeted more towards families. I think Velocicoaster is a perfect balance of thrills and theming. But I would take something like Fury 325 or Steel Vengeance over something like Rockin Roller Coaster or Everest any day. Simply because the coasters themselves are so much better imo. Although I know they are targeted at different audiences. Thrills over theming for me. But I appreciate a coaster like Velocicoaster that has both.

    • @zacg_
      @zacg_ 2 роки тому

      I think "quality" is somewhat subjective. I personally really like highly themed experiences and find well done theming to significantly elevate a coaster. But for me, riding a coaster is very experiential and a multisensory experience. In that regard, some people really love dining at a restaurant with nice atmosphere and elegant presentation of the food while others just want it to taste really good. There's really no one correct perspective on that and it's just a matter of preference.
      I really enjoy parks like Cedar Point, Magic Mountain, Carowinds and Hersheypark but I still prefer parks like Universal, Disney, Busch Gardens or Silver Dollar City and Dollywood. I just think I get more out of the rides that adopt a theme or even tell a story. And a coaster can be thrilling while having a well done theme (such as Velocicoaster and Karnan.) But even if the coaster pacing is slowed down a bit for the narrative, I think what matters most is whether or not the narrative has a payoff. Take the firehouse on Fire Chaser Express at Dollywood or the final drop on Expedition Everest. The coaster stops but the narrative builds excitement and there is even a thrilling payoff. Same thing is true with the drop track on Verbolten.
      I'm not saying you need to prefer theming over intensity, airtime or pacing. I'm just saying that theming when done right can build emotional intensity that is its own reward. After all, the point of any ride is to stimulate our brains in a strategic way for a euphoric payoff.

      I didn't really consider Wicker Man to fit into this category as it seems to represent its story in a more abstract way. The theming also isn't all encompassing in the same way that something like the Matterhorn is. I've never been on it, so if you want to make an argument otherwise, I'm all ears, but Wicker Man gives me the impression of being more like Mako or Montu. There's set pieces and theming, but not enough to consider a story being told. Of course, the categories I used in the video are arbitrary and a bit fluid in their application, so I'm not even sure if I understand the standard that I established.
