Velocicoaster - The Apex Predator of Rollercoasters

  • So, it appears that the Jurassic World Velocicoaster is finally among us and it’s quite the beast. The apex predator of rollercoasters, as it were. Normally, I do a much more in-depth analysis of attractions because I tend to focus on dark rides, but this is going to be a little bit different. It’s not that the coaster doesn’t have a story to tell, but the focus is very much on the experience of the track layout and its various elements. It’s an intensely wild ride. As a channel focused on dark rides, today we’re going to instead be focusing on the layout of this coaster. We’re going to be breaking down why it’s a great addition to Islands of Adventure and answering a lot of questions about why it exists and how it compares to something, like say The Incredible Hulk.

    One of my favorite parts of the ride has to be the lockers being seamlessly merged into the queue. Such a genuinely good and useful idea.

      If you have a mobile ticket, make sure you print out a physical copy for the lockers. Otherwise, you’ll have to ask a team member to open your locker if you put your phone in there.

      Yeah I think Airtime Thrills put it at #11? Which is ridiculously high for a coaster at a park that's more of a "theme" park than a "thrill" park
      (Update: He moved it to #6 with the release of his top 100 list for this year)

    I live within a relatively short distance away from Cedar Point, so I felt like I shouldn't have any expectations for a serious roller coaster when visiting Orlando as I'm a bit spoiled by our local coasters. Both Hagrid's and Velocicoaster blew me away. Velocicoaster I think is one of the best roller coasters ever made. I don't want to spoil specific elements for anybody, but I get excited thinking about them again. Definitely THE coaster to go on if you are a fan of coasters.

      "America's Roooooler Coast!" I'm about an hour and a half drive outside of Cedar Point, too, and I have a very huge "Millennium Force and Maverick" bias. While Rockin-Rollercoaster and Hulk Coaster were fun, they were never "top coasters" for me.
      After the _very first ride,_ Velocicoaster dethroned everything Cedar Point has to offer for me. And I don't say that lightly, it's a _very_ good ride.

    omg i absolutely love velocicoaster !! i went on it when it soft opened and i’m a pretty quiet person but, as soon as i got off that ride, my eyes were wide and i was smiling so hard, i literally couldn’t process what just happened and so i yelled on top of my lungs to my mom, “can we go on that again?!” and it turned out a team member was in front of us and so she turned around and asked if we really wanted to go on it again and so we of course said yes and she took us through the express lane 😭!! she led us all the way through and through the lockers and we got to choose what row we wanted and so we went in the last row, which is my personal favorite row. i don’t remember her name since this was in 2021 but i will always be so thankful for her and for making my day all because i decided to yell so damn loud ☹️🫶.

    Velocicoaster is perfect for Islands of Adventure. It would be cool to see Universal gain more inspiration from Phantasialand by incorporating large mega coasters into themed worlds like Taron and F.L.Y. but with Velocicoaster and maybe Hagrids Motorbike we are starting to see that more!

    Went into this one blind, and it resulted in two fantastic surprises.
    1. The second launch. Oh my god, especially when you already feel like you're going fast, rocketing to 70MPH was insane
    2. The drop at the start was not the drop that we saw outside. I had a difficult time telling where the ride actually started when looking from the outside, and thought that that beginning drop was the big one that I saw in the que. When I realized I was wrong, and when I realized just how long they kept you hanging before dropping was seriously one of the best parts of any ride I've ever experienced.
    I've never been so glad to not know about something, as it shaped a unique experience that wouldn't have happened if I had known everything going in.

    I think the story of the Velocicoaster would have been cool if it turns out that "you" the guest, actually are the raptors, and that there are fictional guest here to see you, watching you from a window. You become part of the experiment. Then, you have a bunch of scientists and military guys start testing out your ability, then off you go on the ride. Then, when you come back, they are like, the experiment was a success. While on the ride, you have a guest taking a picture of you, and that could be the photo op. Man, I don't know, I thought it would be a fun idea.

      i like that, i think the secret life of pets dark ride in hollywood studios has the point of view that you’re being transformed into a pet, and i think that can translate to this ride. maybe not a concept like “ you’re transformed into a raptor” but you’re just a raptor. Universal has done that point of view before in life of pets so it could translate well if handled correctly

    This coaster is perfect, it is well themed, the lines are always short even when it is a 45 minute wait, just by how quickly the launches happen, the coaster itself is a true coaster you would expect to find at a thrill park (of course at a theme park quality), also because it is at universal instead of say Cedar Point it is never the longest line as Universal is still a family park and as such Hagrid's take the brunt on the crowds. It definitely isn't the best pure coaster but it is definitely in most peoples top 10 if not top 5 behind the God Tier coaster thrill machines like Steel Vengeance or Iron gwazi

    I'm a sucker for the aesthetics of the og Jurassic Park and I've wanted to go on the River Adventure basically my whole life but never got the chance to go to the Universal parks, so I am worried that they'll replace the river adventure in Islands of Adventure with the Jurassic World version, although it would thematically make sense now with the addition of the Velocicoaster. However, that new Jurassic World one does look enticing to me, now that I've seen they've done it properly. I think you're in luck though. 13:27 I haven’t been to Universal in years but I do remember the last and the only time I was there me and my siblings rode that ride about like four times because there was no one in line and I really liked it. The funny thing is for years I actually thought it was called the rock and roller coaster. Since it was years ago though I wonder if I would still like that ride now

  • @MCLegoboy

    First ride of the day, you gotta do it before the line backs up too far, and even then, it would still be worth it. The way I see this coaster, the idea of putting a ride in the Raptor Paddock is nonsensical, which does fit in line with Jurassic World, but even this is pushing it for the Jurassic World movie. However, I was thinking about this the other day, and it's more like you yourself become one of the Velociraptors with what we see them do in the movies. They're like cheetahs with how fast they can sprint, they're able to maneuver quickly and easily around, and they can jump better than any of the other predatory dinosaurs we see. All of that is present within this coaster. I doubt that they're doing pirouettes and barrel rolls in their jumps and they certainly cannot fly, but even then, you're moving fast, the arcs in the track are like the long jumps or high jumps they make, it's just incredible. I've never experienced anything like this ride.

    Your review was pretty spot on of my first experience of velocicoaster. Between it and Hulk it forms a ying and yang on the spectrum of roller coaster extremes. Its an instant masterpiece and makes me super pumped for the future of universal.
    I think you're a little too harsh on Rip Ride Rockit though. While a bit mediocre, and clearly a ripoff it still gives another aspect of coaster experience that the others dont... sharp vertical drops. Yes the lift is pretentious and uncomfortable, as are the restraints, but Rip Ride Rockit provided a lot of those high speed, steep drops similar to coasters closer to my home, something the other coasters lack. Additionally, the noninverted loop was the first of its kind IIRC, and so it deserves some credit for being innovative.

    Velocicoaster blew my mind with its bursts of speed. The Hulk ride is now 3rd in my eyes with Hagrids being #1 and Velocicoaster being a close 2nd. All 3 are still amazing iconic rides and make Universal Studios worth it. I think they just need to update some rides like in the Comic book area and maybe drop the DR. Seuss area and do something else because it barely had activity now that all kids go straight to harry potter area.

    IOA has always been the better park in terms of rides and theming. That theming that would make me livid to replace park with world on the river adventure and make me willing to chain myself to the discovery center.
    People always point to Harry Potter for starting this highly themed trend, but universal has been living by the design philosophy of “ride the movies” for decades and it shows when they can put you in a comic book or bring the world of Seuss into ours. But Jurassic Park was the crowned jewel of theming in IOA prior to Potter. The discovery center is an immaculate recreation of the visitor center and it really puts you in Jurassic park so I’d be heartbroken if they decided to retheme to world (which would be a baffling choice in the same way Disney favoring the contentious and not universally loved star wars sequel trilogy is).
    I personally also think the Jurassic world version of the ride in Hollywood loses sight of what makes that ride work so well. For example the mosasaurus at the start dies away with the bait and switch because it antagonizes the guest immediately by cracking the glass rather than starting with peaceful herbivores that make you forget the big drop outside for a minute. It also doesn’t make any sense from a physics stand point to have the aquarium enclosure riding above either side of the boat, at least I don’t think so. And the mosasaur could easily eat us during that part where it literally swims under the boat instead of hitting the glass lol. I also think going into the theropod enclosure is a less thrilling final than the restricted areas of the park version. In the park version, the ante is higher because not only are you entering the carnivore area, but they’ve also escaped into the maintenance service areas to get you. In world you’re bothering them in their space lol. Though I guess it fits for world’s themes of more thrill more teeth and back zookeeping.
    Velocicoaster is good fun though! Hagrid’s feels like it’s all about speed with it’s extra launches while hulk feels all about power, apt for the big guy. Velocicoaster feels like a mix between the two which makes sense for velociraptors and gives a feeling of viciousness that they have.

    This is coaster is the cousin of Cedar Point's Maverick. I might rank this one higher above Maverick. Both are wild rides although, I do tend to love the second launch on maverick a bit, it's way more forceful, but too bad about the trims at the top of the small hill before the dive. I love the stall element and theming. Maverick has practically no theming but Cedar Point is all about coasters/thrills.

      @@BigBossMan538 When I criticize Six Flags, I'm really referring to their cheap use of IP as a marketing tactic. For as good as a B&M invert like Batman is, cloning it and relying on the name alone is a disappointing endeavor. It's not the Six Flags parks don't have good attractions or aren't worth going to, but they do everything as cheaply as possible. For example, the Six Flags Rotation Program had them take a coaster from one park and move it to another to premier a "new" experience. I suppose that was cheaper than paying for a new attraction, and also had the detrimental effect of making those coasters rougher and rougher as they were moved around. It's not terrible if you're literally going just for thrilling rides, but it's also not a standard that Disney should lower itself to.

    I don't think you get the theme behind the queue. The queue is partially in the former backstage area of the raptor exhibit. That is why it looks not fit to be a queue. The silly idea is, to make the exhibit more interesting, that they build a coaster in it for guests.
    Also Jurassic Park is a unique park within the brand, build in Isla Avontura at IOA. As with many theme parks who have multiple parks around the world they copy attractions form other parks. So the Island is perfectly themed and not at all confusing (if you know the back story).

    • @PoseidonEntertainment
      @PoseidonEntertainment  2 роки тому +5

      As someone who is intimately familiar with the theming, it's insulting that you suggest I don't get it.
      First, it's clearly not a backstage area. Nothing about it suggests that. The actual story, as the queue clearly explains, is that the Indominous Rex is a project that has been delayed. Because of this, Claire Dearing commissioned a roller-coaster through the raptor paddock to get people up close and personal with them.
      Second, it's Isla "Aventura" to fit in with the theme of IoA. It is indeed located in Florida, but it is not part of IoA and is completely diegetic to the Jurassic Park story. The "island" is an overall theme that fits abstractly into the overall theme of the park.

  • @SFANNNBCUSofA
    @SFANNNBCUSofA 2 роки тому

    It's a damn fine coaster, but I think a lot of your arguments about theming at the Mine Train should also be applied here. Obviously coasters are designed for different audiences. Looking at theming objectively, you bash Mine Train for a lot of the same qualities that Velocicoaster have. Mostly rock work, barely any on ride show scenes, generic architecture, lack of story. The only difference is slightly more theming in the queue with different video effects and a few animatronic raptor heads.

    • @PoseidonEntertainment
      @PoseidonEntertainment  2 роки тому

      I don't think that the standard of judgment is equivalent at all. Velocicoaster was clearly intended for the intensity of the coaster experience to come first, with the theming being a secondary factor, just as with the Incredible Hulk. The coaster's layout and visual spectacle take precedence. In contrast, Seven Dwarfs cannot commit to being either a narrative driven or engaging coaster experience and so fails in both regards. It is true that the raptor paddock isn't any better themed than the German mountains, but the difference is that it's a backdrop and not the focus of the ride. If you were to take away the theming of Velocicoaster, it would still be an exceptional experience.

    • @SFANNNBCUSofA
      @SFANNNBCUSofA 2 роки тому

      @@PoseidonEntertainment You kind of make my point. Each coaster has a very different target and judging my people's reactions and queue times, they are exciting and thrilling for that target. You're not the target audience for Mine Train and I'm not sure, when talking about theming, you were objective. Remove the coaster from the theming and both spaces are lackluster in theming in many ways. Yet also it fills the same visual functions of Hulk and Velocicoaster in the sense that it's visually pleasing to look at from many angles around in the park and adds kinetic visuals. It's been a minute since I watched your Mine Train video, but I think you call it, more or less, a waste of space. Considering that the ride was not even supposed to be built when they announced the Fantasyland renovations and that they managed to squeeze a coaster in a space allocated for princess meet and greets is impressive. Velocicoaster is a damn fine coaster and I'm really not trying to come off as die-hard defending Mine Train, just pointing out the qualities you dislike about it are the same for this coaster, but because one is a coaster designed for an the target audience of such little kids, you didn't apply the same standards in reviewing. Your Mine train video was harsh. Maybe that was on purpose for the views.
