Thank you so so much! This will be so helpfull to orthodox christians. I am glad that you mentionned that we should not theologise. In the beginning, when my spiritual father said this to me, I was a bit disappointed, because I had this enthousiasm! I tried to listen to him though, because I assumed that he knew exactly what he said and why he said it. This was the best advice given to me. I took me YEARS to comprehend why he said what he said. I suppose it is part of the φρόνημα. My spiritual father also told me NOT to compare orthodoxy with other religions, ever. I understand now why....orthodoxy really re-shaped my thinking and behaviour and still I have a lot to learn. Again: you two are gold!! I thank God !

When I converted to Orthodoxy after being in Evangelical Churches for 25 years (and having taught Bible studies and even spent time as a Youth leader and gave several sermons over that time), I felt that I should keep quiet and just keep learning, praying, etc. I thought something was wrong with me or that I was not being a good Christian. Thanks be to God for this, Dr. Jeannie helped me to see that I was actually listening to the Holy Spirit and the Church Fathers!

This was so eye opening for this recently chrismated Orthodox Christian, and answered so many questions I have (a lot of them in response to watching too many Orthodox UA-cam videos).I am reading Jeannie’s book now. I could feel myself starting to lean towards Pharisaical thinking, and I needed to hear this for humility. I know nothing. Can’t thank you enough for this interview, God bless you!

What incredible insight you have, Dr. Constantinou. I have very fond memories of taking Early Christianity with you at the University of San Diego. Orthodox Christians such as yourself reinforce my happiness for having converted to Orthodoxy 14 years ago. Many blessings! IC XC NIKA

That was really good. It's great that Dr Jeannie has decided to be a voice for the church and there are theologians that are starting to speak out like Fr Whiteford and Fr Ramsey and Fr Trenham as well etc.
I'm just wondering what the difference is between sharing and theologising is though?
Anyway I'm off to find the video with her speaking to Mexatas.
All the best with your studies.

Thank you! I think she would say that if you in private or with a group of friends share your faith, that is one thing, and another thing if you do it officially on the internet. During the interview, she made also a distinction between speaking, let say about the Bible, and theologising about the heavy stuff. Everyone is called to witness but not everyone is called to be a teacher. To be a teacher you need personal experience and education. I don't want to put words in Dr Constantinou's mouth but that is my takeaway from this interview! Hope it helps

Yes that's very helpful, so basically keep to sharing your faith in a general manner but when it comes to the more indepth theology it's best to have ppl like Fr Trenham and Dr Jeannie etc speak about these things. It's very good advice, I think i myself need to adhere to more. Cheers.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding her point, but the idea that the Son came as a sacrifice to purge sin is not based on "rationalism." It's based on the teachings of almost all of our catechisms, the old testament and is clearly taught by the fathers. Christ is the lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29). He is the scapegoat of Leviticus 16 and bronze serpent lifted on the pole in Numbers 21 (and John 12:32).

@CultofModernism I think she's critiquing a merely legal or mechanical transaction interpretation. Orthodoxy has the concept of salvation as "theosis", an actual participation in the divine life of God. Christ renews creation, we have to enter into it, be transformed ontologically, not merely assent to it by saying "I believe Jesus paid my ticket."

Yes...Catholics call it the 'development of doctine' to justify all the changes that have taken place. They don't look to the early Church or depend on the Church Fathers like we do. Therefore I never felt connected to the early Church when I was Catholic. Through the prayers of our Holy Fathers Lord Jesus Christ have mercy on us and save us☦.

It's funny. She just explained to me why I am drawn East. I need to stop panicking and trying to find answers to an endless series of questions and theories and just rest where God led me and where I experience His presence. Not that I'll stop thinking but God forced me to submit to Him beyond my own limits long before He told me to go to Church. The very moment the GOC door opened when I knocked I recognised it as God's.

When Luther took the Priesthood out of the Church and made the Lay people their own Priest and Kingship. Which but the focus on the individual instead of the communal. Now hundreds of years later... It's all about me. Did I raise my hand and except Jesus? Do I accept Him as Lord? Did I walk down the isle to the alter? It's all about me and what I want. I think that is a misguided focus. I need to look to Yeshua Christos not me.
Just my thought. Please don't take offense. Im still grateful for my protestant upbringing. But more grateful to have been found by the Orthodox Faith
