The beginning is unbelievably beautiful. The rest is also astonishing. The mystery of the Hudson River, the folklore that surrounds it, it resonates in this music
A great version of one of my favorite Monk tunes, and one of a few Monk tunes that hardly ever get played. Most musicians get stumped by the odd meters in the A section, then by the 3 1/2 bar bridge
It's probably a nearby date in December. He played a concert in La Salle Pleyel on the 15th and probably wouldn't have been also recording a separate concert in a studio on the same day.
The Hudson was a car brand. The Hudson Hornet was the fastest car on the road in its time. I just learned that from Dave, my favorite sidekick and pretty much an expert on the subject of old cars plus being an ace mechanic. Maybe the real title refers to the car.
I was told by a source that I consider to be somewhat reliable but that I would not swear by that the title refers to an erotic experience that he had in a car that was parked overlooking the Hudson. The Identity of the lady was mentioned to me and is neither Nellie nor Nica. As I said, I do not necessarily subscribe to this theory but it is plausible.
Monk and his wife were good friends with Pannonica 'Nica' Rothchild who lived in an appartement overlooking the Hudson in Weehawken. Monk stayed there a lot when they were recording at Rudy Vangelder studio's.

Jan Nye It’s also possible that it could refer to the Hudson river which is where Monk only lived a few blocks from in NYC.

Maybe it’s not the car
