A real loss to the AirWing - I was primarily a helicopter crewman, but did qualify as an S-3B Senso... flew a few missions off USS Kitty Hawk on her 1997-98 cruise.
VS-38 AW2, SENSO 1988-1992. USS Ranger (CV-61). Operations Earnest Will, Desert Shield, Desert Storm and Defense of the Kurdish Peoples. Viking Night Ops was gnarly... Part of the Viking overview video I created... Link: ua-cam.com/video/haRV--q0bjY/v-deo.html
Had a buddy assigned to the classic F-18 straight out of training. Interestingly he had a late growth spurt at 25 years old and grew to 6'8. He was in the airplane on deck and the Captain saw him and was like "what the Hell?' Get him outta there! That was his last day in a Hornet. He went on to fly the S-3 and apparently was fine.
Was lucky enough to see two S-3 Vikings while on a trip to Japan. This would have been in 1998. I was in Hiroshima at the time and they were low so perhaps on a visit?

Shut up’agot. Let’s hear about the capabilities and crew before we focus on the archaic targets. Look for Lockheed or Parascope docs for known bias docs. This “we are fighting dot dot dot” isn’t entraining.
I've heard this "air conditioning vent" thing said about the gold war 1000 times over the past 40 years. *It just struck me* . Air conditioning doesn't "vent" to the outside. its a closed circuit. The interior of the building is like a fridge - the exterior is a cooler joined by water pipes. Air doesn't move between then two... nor are there "vents" ... So the heat disparity they were hitting with bombs were just air conditioning cooling units on the roof. - I mean - it blew the shit out the building but it wasn't goin down a "vent".
As far as SWO officers were concerned, this was our favorite/ideal acft in the Air Wing.

AW’Yes! How I miss the old days of VHS.
There with them on the GW, 1st and 2nd Med Cruises. Supported via one shop behind VAST in IM3. What a blast we had back then.
I was in VS-30 right next door.. Cecil.. Diamond Cutters.. AO..🇺🇸
Cvw17?
I was attached to VS-28 Gamblers, AO. Was one of my favorite tours, the S3B was a great aircraft to work on.

I miss this show
CVN65 early 1980s. I still recall the giant sucking sound of startups.
Thanks for sharing!
I have seen a S-3 fly once. Came over the airfield in a hard break, vapor wisping over the wings.
VS -33 NAS North Island AW here. Great times 84-88
The A-10 of the Navy.
This is the plane that Bush was on when he landed on the carrier USS Abraham Lincoln for the now famous Mission Accomplished speech
That very plane is on display at the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, FL.

Thanks Mike for digging these up for us! Truly great documentaries!
Also, doesn't the S 3 has the same engines as the A 10?
It sure does. GE's TF43
Sure does, but also the same engine type as the Bombardier CRJ airliner series
