Wonderful presentation on the - “ last of the iron jug “ Harleys ! I had an 83’ , which was the last “ full year “ production , but a few squeaked out of the Milwaukee Motor Company in 84’ ; I’ve ALWAYS wanted to say that I owned an 84’ for THAT reason . I like your style . Thanks for sharing .
I had an ‘84 FXST. Introductory year for the EVO engine/Softail frame. Having had 2 Ironhead Sporty’s, 3 Shovelheads & a Panhead prior, it was the most drastic change at that time. I was very sceptical & got alotta shit from alotta old school cats at the time. I gave MYSELF alotta shit for getting it..... Change don’t come easy. It’s 2018 now & I still have that bike w/over 160,000 miles on it. Wouldn’t get rid of it for 2 new ones.....
Got one. Almost identical. Original black but different tank logo script. Been in family since new. I've had it for the last 18 years. Wouldn't trade it for any other year.
1984 saw many changes. One of them were the new brakes. No longer dual front brakes except the FLT models and the rear brake was updated. The rear brake actually came out mid year 1983, but was not in any literature of the era that I personally saw until 1984. HD nearly always had many changes when new motors came out, in brakes, frames, and many times in concurrently offered motor line ups. 1984 was the last year of the Shovelheads and the 1st year of the EVO's.
They made 300 1985 FLHPs. Not all police departments picked up their order, so a select few were sold to civilians. There is a 1985 FLHP in the channel
Just been riding my 1983 Harley Davidson FXWG. Keep it between 55-60 and it sure runs fine. Need to replace my Rocker Cover gaskets though. Nice bike, thanks for sharing.
My last shovel was a - 1983 FXWG . After the top end , I soon got massive rocker box gasket leaks . I actually was on the phone with the President of James Gaskets for 45 min and he gave me a “ tutorial “ on the remedy . They ( for some unknown reason) offer two levels of shovel head gaskets . YOU WANT THE UPGRADE gaskets , and if you want what he told me let me know …
@@Dynachop420 I was told to use a piece of like 1/4 “ Plate glass or a piece of granite countertop . I just had a new countertop made for my kitchen remodel , so I used the 2 foot by three foot piece that they cut out for the sink . I bought sheets of Emory paper at Ace Hardware , and taped them to the straight side of the granite to the edge . You take the aluminum “ shovel “ rocker boxes and carefully “ hand mill “ the rocker box one at a time and push in one direction . You get after many strokes a perfect flat surface . The top of the cylinder heads must be carefully but completely clean of any leftover gasket materials . Get the “ upgrade “ James Gasket set and reinstall everything . The motorcycle shop that did my top end did a great job on the boring of the cylinders and machined my heads wonderfully with a nice 3 angle valve job . These later shovels have better brakes. other then this, their reliability is simply a matter of who the mechanic is. Well maintained shovels are reliable. not well maintained shovels break, especially those owned by people who want to ride them like a modern machine. The speed limit when these were made was 55, go 55 and don't break down, go 70 and you will break them
hey love the bike. i had one and thought i had to have a bagger, hated it traded for an 82 wide glide. the single disc brake and belt drive i believe was a later production that is what i had. but seen a 84 this summer that had to be an early run because it had dual discs and chain drive. so a person might check on this. i have a 99 wide glide now and wish i had my 84 back loved that bike. i like my 99 but loved my 84.
People change parts all the time. That said, Harley never stopped the production line because they ran out of parts. They put on last years, or next years, and sold the machine. I personally saw two brand new 1984 Softtails on the Floor at Barger Harley Davidson in Canoga Park California with the 1983 and earlier dual disc wide glide on them. The Catalog says all 1984 models had the new single disc brake. Also, 1984 saw a different rear brake come out. The FXWG come with a rear belt in 1984 "always", but the 1984 and 1985 FXST Softtail came with a rear chain. It is possible you saw a Softtail and mistook it for the Wideglide. The 1984 - 85 Softtail's had a 4 speed and kicker.
o no it was a wide glide had a softtail to it was a wide glide i have been around scoots since late 80s even worked at dales in mt v. ill. iam ate up with harleys even talked to the mechanic who was workin on this bike he said basically what u did that harley just kept building them never stoped so just when they probly run out of dualdisc front ends went to the single would that not be coolto run across a dual disc with belt drive from the factory u never know with harley my 99 kinda has some mixed match parts on it but that is whats cool about harleys
Hey Todd! Question for ya, where would you suggest purchasing a NOS federal label? there may be no opportunity to get one years after the bike was made I'm working towards getting my 89 harley as stock looking as possible and finding that label is tough

+HuntingHarleys I bought that bike. the extra nipple is a tank vent. It goes up thru the inside of the tank and into the cap recess. Since its closed off I guess I'll have to use vented caps? when I remove the caps a rush of air gets sucked in.
+greggmc2 I figured it was a vent. The twisted screw on caps are supposed to be vented as well. If your machine is not dying from vacuum in the tank, IE feeding gas, your fine.
