- Todd shows this 1996 FXSTS Springer Softtail and talks somewhat about the history behind the EVO motor and bloodline. To see detailed pictures of this motorcycle, go here www.flickr.com/...
Just cleaned the carb and changed the oil on my 1995 fxstsb. It’s been sitting in the garage for around 5 years. Threw a new battery in and it fired right up. Gotta love the evo motor.
Love these springers. Softtail design is second to none
"New world I'm good" too right brother, I bought my first in 1996 in my mid 20's - still own that one & now have 3 more Evo's in addition. Want at least two more LOL
What an awesome explanation about the history of the Evo's.....nice bike too!
Great looking Harley-Davidson
I love the Evolution Engine. A Harley-Davidson home run! Beautiful bike!
Wow,finally, good bikes, evolution forever.best motor Harley Davidson ever made.
I got 200,000 miles on my 85 FLHTC with original top end..290,000 miles with original clutch. 360,000 miles before getting T- boned going 60..it got totalled. The starter was never replaced or even taken off..
I want to believe you but I just don't. That's insane mileage for all of those items
evo is the best sounding engine. and the strongest motor they ever built
I know this is an old video but I enjoy them very much. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. My “old bike” is a 2001 twin cam Road King. My new one is a 2020 Street Glide. I’d love to own an old shovel or knuckle or pan but it seems like the Knuckles and Pans are much more of a hands on kind of bike. While I have the knowledge about mechanical stuff and could certainly learn the ins and outs I’m more of a maintain it and ride it kind of guy. Which makes your stuff perfect for me to watch and enjoy. Thanks again for sharing.
I don't ride for speed. The feel of the machine is just very different from the older bikes.
Softail springers are SWEET!👍
I've been watching your vids since early 2011 and I have to say its the only thing worth watching on UA-cam.
Hunting Harley's is good stuff you may wanna try Pacific Mikes videos too
Thank you for the history lesson.
Especially valuable coming from someone who was there.
By the way, Barger HD is now called Top Rocker HD.
Didn't know. Haven't been there in decades
@@HuntingHarleys here’s my own little history.
In 1984 I was I was living at Los Angeles Job Corps.
I would ride the bus to various dealers to buy T shirts.
Laidlaws was in Rosemead, Harbor City HD, there was also Vic’s Custom Cycles on Sherman Way.
Anyway I was riding the bus out to Barger’s and I got in a fight with some dude who tried to crowd into the seat next to me.
We got off the bus, he hit me in the face, I hit him on the chin and he dropped so fast and his head went THOCK when it hit the concrete!
I decided that would be a good time to leave, and walked the rest of the way to Barger’s.
Today with cameras you'd probably got a charge
@@HuntingHarleys yeah no kidding, there woulda been 20 people pointing their phones at us.
thanks for the link. lots of 1948 were made, 14,000 of them (very high production for pre 1970 HD's). Lots of them still around in nice original paint condition. I passed on 3 like that (nice original paint) this year.
Now that was a breath of fresh air your knowledge is amazing thoroughly enjoyed it thank you
+Jake C , twin cams to me are a modern bike. If you like fast, powerful, doing 80MPH on the highway or being able to ride 800 miles in a day. You absolutely want a twin cam. ME, I ride 20 miles, SLOW, doing 35-50 MPH on an antique. For myself, this is a much more enjoyable activity. Some like fat girls, some like thin girls, and SOME dudes like other dudes. Hey, whatever works for you.
Yeah I love thin stick chicks. They're just so soft and squishy. So girlie and cute. I don't mind fat chicks though. Not for me, but hay they're still females. lol Also just cause they ain't my cup of tea doesn't mean they ain't for no ont. All's good.
Owned a twin cam 25000 miles later the crank slipped what a piece of shit but it was fuckn fast
Fat Chicks or dudes NEED NOT APPLY
@@kennethwise7108 Absolutely Evo's forever I own and love my 97 Heritage I get compliments everywhere I go on it still . I'm never giving it up .
@@kennethwise7108 nobody else has made a motor that the lower end is indestructible like the Evo 500,000 plus miles just ask Scooter Tramp Scotty he got that out of his first Evo . I've heard of several people who got over 200,000 miles and are still going strong .
thanks for taking time at sharing you're passion, again very interesting...better than what's on TV.
wow, thanks for the great compliment!
1996? Jeez this is like brand new compared to what you guys normally deal with!
Excellent explination Todd. I watch all of your videos and find them to be some of the most interesting things on UA-cam. As a Harley-Davidson enthusiast I find them riveting. Could you please give us a talk about the relationship between the ironhead sportster engines and the shovelhead. Thanks!
I will when I have the chance
not a problem, glad you like the vid!
Thank you for giving the run down on the evolution history. I acquired my first two bikes at the same time i still own. One bike has an 88tc and one has an Evo. I cant keep my dirty mitts off that Evo
.the Tc sadly sits 5 out of 6 rides
@George Lynch Dixon I’m a few years into running my evo and the bike has run great and Is not intimidating as people might think to work on. Iv yet to have a problem with my twin cam bike but but haven’t used it enough to compare fairly.
super reliable bike. Change the oil and plugs every 1000 miles, keep tires and brake pads good and ride it. Just be sure to warm up the motor 1st or you will blow the base gaskets.
Amen to that Bubba .
Morning Todd, love your Hunting Harleys. Built my first WLC Harley 750 chop/bobber in 1976/77. Built a few since. On an original 96 Dyna Wide Glide now, with 12,6000 on the clock. I prefer the carb models. Keep it coming please.
Ah well, back to the shed, stripping the switch gear to repaint the shells. Cheers. Lach. Kent England.
glad you like the vids!
+Phillp Enriquez 1984 and 1985 FXST Softtails all had a 4 speed and rear chain. They also came stock with a kick start and a natural aluminum motor, transmission and primary
how do you warm up an evo properly??
how do you warm up an evo properly??
how do you warm up an evo properly??
let it idle until the side of the cylinder feels warm to touch
Earl Guyton um what? 1984 fxst came with an EVO motor!! What the fuck are you smoking?
Thankyou so much for the education on Evos Todd. Really interesting to know. Keep doing this stuff, it's facinating.
Totally agree. Whatever makes a person happy! Ride on brother and keep making these awesome videos!
steve kwall The bluing of the pipes is related to heat, pipe thickness, and chrome. Run them out of time even briefly, watch the pipes blue.
I love my 1997 Heritage Softail Evo's forever !
glad you enjoyed the vid!
If bikes sit long enough, the oil goes into the lower end. They will sump out any extra onto the ground when started
Nice snail trail...
I have a 95 FXSTS same paint as this one.Im running EV27 cam ,42mm Muk Screaming Eagle Ingn. Thunderheader exhaust. It has been a fun MC Running solid fatboy style rear and 80 spoke 21 frt.
Im very shocked that you are not the Harley Davidson Museum Curator. Your knowledge is of these bikes is Superior. You have taught me alot. By the way ive watched this video a few times, when you take off on the bike is that water or oil leaking out of the bike? just curious or am i just seeing things. Have a great day Todd!!
probably oil. its a harley
Throw a good oil pump & gear drive cams, in an early Twin Cam and you've got a good machine. Like the Springer.
I don't know what Vulcan's are worth, but I'd personally rather have the FXDS!
your right on about the feel , i enjoy my 94 fxdl over my 07 road king feels like your realy riding a motorcycle
Hey todd, I just picked up a 1996 FXDS convertible, the metallic purple looking color with 20,300 original miles on it... runs great, and is mostly stock except for a hypercharger and some chrome doodads. I have the stock bags, but the windshield is missing. The bags aren't in very good shape but they work. Did a straight up trade for my Vulcan 2000 classic. You think I made out ok? Paint is pretty good except for the blemishes you would expect on a 17 year old bike
Things are changing even faster now. To my mind, the newest bikes are getting more like cars that are extremely tedious and difficult to work on yourself. So now, even the Twin Cams are getting outdated.
my '87 FXR had 50k on it when I sold it. Seemed like the older it got the better it ran. wish I had it back. I remember reading a story about a guy who ran an '87 FLH over 400k miles. The company gave him a new bike in exchange for his bike so they could do some tests to see what made it last that many miles.

Whats the method of properly warming up an
An evo motor ? Is it to tick over on its side stand for 5 minutes? No issue with the side stand lean ? Thanks
loved the evo history. feel free to give more...
Yes I rode my buddy's 99 FXR but he had that motor built up I appreciate all your info and your videos are you still in business and in California
Wow, nice I had the same bike same colour New in 98-miss that springer. the springer front end with 18inch apes -now ya got a cool ride.
why don't you leave the choke on longer when its cold so it can idle? Hows the vibration on that soft tail model?
Awesome content bro.
I have a 91 FXRS lowrider conv. 96” S&S. I’m thinking about going to dry clutch/ not open belt. Any thoughts? Heads are done etc... honest 100 hp. I hate oil leaks haha.
At 14:04, what is that fluid coming out on the ground as you took off? Made a streak right under the rear tire!
gatorhunter1 gravity causes oil to eventually seep past the check ball in the oil pump, then into the lower end. When a bike sit's long enough, even a brand new bike, Harley that is, will eventually have this issue. The oil does not magically go back into the oil tank when the lower end is over filled it spews on the ground
HuntingHarleys Wheew! Thanks for the reply, I thought that fluid was coming from a rear master cylinder or something. That happened on my bike once!
I just picked up a 1993 FXSTS for a song. They really are great bikes if you like the nostalgic look. I personally will be building a mildly simplified "bobbed" 70's era inspired bike.
Seeing as you are the resident expert here. What should I look out for with the older carbed Evo motor? Any parts that fail and should be replaced at a specific time or mileage to avoid bigger issues? It is a 1993 with 25k miles on it.
Hey Todd, Bill Davis--an engineer and Motorcycle Enthusiast from St.Louis, Missouri designed the 1st softtail prototype in 1972 on his Super Glide. Easyriders Rag used to run that ad a lot in the mid to later 70's. The company was called Road Worx. I won a helluva lot of bets when i pulled that EZ cutout ad outta' my wallet to show the disbelievers that Davidson originally never made the softtail frame like they boasted. They just bought out Bill Davis and hushed it!!! Google..."Did You Know? The story of the Harley-Davidson Softtail Frame". Or Goggle..."Vintage Road Worx Harley Frame'' (Hawgshack Cycles Timeline Facebook article) for detailed information. The advertisement of Road Worx that Easyriders ran is in this article. It's entitled--ROAD WORX INTRODUCES..."SUB SHOCK". Take Care, and Thanks for the cOoL Videos!!!
yes, I am aware of that. it was not a "secrete" back in the day
Ya, i figured you were hipped to this Todd, was just wondering why You didn't mention it in the History and bloodline of the EVO/Softtail.
lack of documentation and I've long forgotten the names.
Later Bro, till next post. T.C. *P.s. Thanks for doing that 2016 VL rundown at Wauseon Todd, i was standing there watching You shoot it and wanted to also Thank You for your Great Race coverage video's at Wauseon!!! Bumped into some old friends and was preempted. Maybe in 2017? C'ya.
I never know I will go until I arrive, so maybe
I have certain collector's that want the late model EVO's. My "cut off" year is 1999.
My o1 soft tail duce is that way until it get wormed up lol
Thank You for the great post.
Sweet sound!!
No shit...
Soundsnfkin SICC
Miss my 2000 Springer.
Hey Todd did these come originally with Buck Horns ? If so how long did they come that way? Looks good ,sounds good.
I have a 85 Ironhead you should definitely do a video on Ironhead Motors
FYI: Those bags are from a Bad Boy & they are worth a whole bunch of money these days.
lots of different riding styles. personally, I try to not go over 50 anymore
Grandpa
Hahaha
You area f'ing wealth of knowledge!! Being a new rider, trying to distinguish which Harley is the right fit, your videos are such a help. If I lived in Cali I would be buying from you. What Models would you suggest for a 1st time harley rider who is really looking for a used Harley and focusing on dependability (something I can ride all the time without worrying about breakdowns?
Rd Robertson any EVO 1991 - 1999 big twin or sporty, most reliable bikes HD ever made
Strongly agree! If you take reasonable care of any Evo they'll easily go over 100K miles on the stock bottom end. Dependability is why I bought my FXR in 1988. Still have it, store it outdoors most of the time and I'm not kind to it though I maintain it with care. I STRONGLY suggest you buy the FACTORY service manual and parts book if you do your own work or not. They are the best tool you can buy for learning about your motorcycle.
Again another great video from Tod .....your information and knowledge is great but I can't help thinking how many women does Tod have chained up in his basement ?
J/K Tod keep up the good work .
Oh and buy an Ironhead would love to see a video on an XLCH .
Evo = perfection. Point blank.
Todd great videos as always I've been following you for a while now thank you for your knowledge in your input on everything on Harley-Davidson I have a question why don't you like twin cam I have to myself I have a 2003 Fatboy and I have a 2006 Dyna Super Glide both our anniversary box love the twin-cam I've had one or threes and I'd like them to my next one is going to be an EVO though so according to your video I'm going to look for the later Evo and I want to go to the Springer
The new bikes do not have the same feel as the older machines. You will see when you get your EVO.
@@HuntingHarleys on the twin cams other than the cam chain tension Adjusters what do you think of that motor i bought my 2003 fatboy and my 2006 super glide both anniversary bikes the super glide is the red white and blue like the 1976 one was same color scheme I guess that was Willie G's first design and color scheme correct me if I'm wrong
@@robw3761 your thinking of the 1st FX Superglide in 1971. HD was known as the Milwaukee Vibrator for decades. The Thump of the motor was a selling point. Twin cams took that out
@@HuntingHarleys thank you for your reply that's right it was 1971 what the hell was I thinking that's what I get for doing voice command are you still in business I hope so and I hope things are going well for you
What is that springer softail worh if in great shape?
Up to 10k max. I've never gotten more then $9500 ever for one
Cual es el precio y como se puede comprar desde honduras
Dude, You Rock!
Very original ! I like it )
that would of been from being too hot at one time. These pipes may, or may not, have been run on this machine from new. Often, people who think they know how to tune these bikes don't and some put them on a electronic timer and 'get it wrong'. The why these pipes got that hot is unknown. I just know some of the causes.
Whats the reason for the blueing so far down from the head ?
$25 in 1981 is not like $100 in 2021. According to the banks, $100 in 1981 is worth $289.34 today; 29 Mar ‘21. BTW, LOVE THIS BIKE! Sounds like $25 is $72!😂
No, $100,000 in 1981 is roughly $1,000,000 today. IE the house for 100k then is now 1 million
@@HuntingHarleys CA is not indicative of the value of money for the rest of the country. Real estate is also not an indicator of inflation. Real estate appreciates according to demand in a geographical area. The banks say, $100 in 1981 is worth $289.34 today.
Yea, that 100k house in LA cost 5 to 20k most other areas of the USA in 1980. Today same place is 150k to 1 million
What would be a fair price for the same model in similar condition?
Diesel_paid! unknown, whatever your willing to pay and another is willing to sell for. prices are all over the map and make no sense today
I always that the X was the marker for the front end.
exactly
right on zacherzack !!!
Dp908 I'd take an FXDS any day over a Vulcan. But your the rider, so you have to decide.
love my 96 fxd convertable.....cold blooded but if your in a hurry to get somewhere take a cage

Muito bonita, perfeição!
My buddy at work has a 89 Super Bowl addition he bought it new in 89 has over 250,000 miles on it. He's ion his 3rd reman motor. Harley made 100 fx super bowl additions and they made 2 white fl springer models what's your email I could send you some pictures of the magazine they gave him when he bought the bike

Lach again, re the Wideglide, make that12,600 mls ! Old age and shift work don't mix very well !

I have the same bike in purple.
Super 👌🏻100%
Why don't you like twin cams? I just like that you can get a stock twin can in a 103. The power is really competitive with other brands...unlike the olden days!
There's one of them 1989 super bowl bikes on the bay bid is at 5600.00 has low mileage . Also 2 pans a 51 and a 53 both o p no reserve i wish i was rich .
they only made 50 of the super bowl bikes. I had a chance at one years ago, but he wanted too much money. wish I was rich too!!
Wow looks like my bike.
I AGREEEEEEE!!!!!!
I understand.. Its just that a fully loaded evo bagger pulling hills is like towing a gooseneck with a car!! Even the 88in TC is..meh on a bagger. I guess I just like a nice combo of a little speed with my cruising...guess that's why I love my Sporty so much!
This Love 😍 😍 😍 😍

what would my 1980 FXS mean?
say again? what do the letters FXS mean??
yeah like what do they stand for? I have next to 0 knowledge about harleys
I am not sure they ever stood for an exact meaning. The FX series meant big twin with narrow fork. The FXS meant a big twin with narrow fork and one could give an opinion here, but if S really meant anything it is lost. The complete term is FXS Lowrider. Harley offered an FXB and an FXE in 1980 also. The FXB Sturgis (1st year) had a twin belt drive and the FXE came in a super glide version (IE small tank) and an FXEF version, IE Fatbob's (that's the F part). The E meant electric start. However, the FXS and FXB were also electric start. The 1st FX model came out in 1971 and was kick only 1971 and 72. 1973 saw the introduction of the FXE. The FXS was introduced in 1977 mid year.
@@HuntingHarleys hi ! Great channel, love it ! I own a 1985 FXEF Evo 4 speed chain, apparently pretty rare ! Sound nice et rides great. Also own a 79 XLH chopper style
Yeah dude totally a manlie James Erl Jones kinda man's bike.
Learn how to tune your bikes. No reason why an evo shouldn't start and run perfect with out the help of the throttle. And stop running them hard before completely warmed up. All your evo bikes probably leak oil from the base gasket
