- Xylvestre Denavide, a survivor of the collapsed 21 storey building in Ikoyi had an exclusive time with Dapo Adegboye giving us some inside gist on what really happened and how he was able to survive the accident.
A professionally conducted interview. My heart goes out to this poor fellow. I pray he gets all the help and support he needs. His story is typical of many youths in this country whose future has been mortgaged by our theiving politicians.
This guy appears so simple, so humble, so transparent and so honest in his delivery. I wish I could give him a job. He would make an excellent and dependable manager of men and material.
And I wish he would remain in the building industry, especially now that he has hands-on experience there.
Or he could go back to school when he has had some money saved and study Building Economics for his Master's.
This journalist is superb. I love all the questions you asked this guy. Keep it up
He is extremely good!
I agree, a very professional interviewer
Wow! Nigeria needs to review labour laws and ensure it is enforced. At this point, if graduates are going to compete with non-graduates for jobs, what is the point of having a certificate
This guy sounds so articulate and attentive to details, such fine details that some people with bigger responsibilities unfortunately choose to ignore
This interview needs to go Viral

Very professional.
Nice interview Dapo, my prayers are with the families that lost their loved ones
This gentleman described directly the key problems in this building leading to its collapse, and all before trauma counselling.
He should be a key witness in the forensic investigation.
I thank him for his statement.
Such a profound conversation
great interview/interviewer
My brother I thank God for your life, handwork and persistence. My prayer is for God to touch the heart of well meaning employers to grant you a GREAT job or establish you🙏 I really wish I could myself...it shall be so undoubtedly IJN

From dis guy's account & also from the interviewer's questions of details materials quantities, the collapsed must have been due to overloads due to the fact dat the initial number of floors couldn't sustain the added floors .And dis guy's really gave a candid opinion
Good hearted people should assist the young man speaking. Thank God for his life.
What a challenging story and prayers to the deceased and to the survivors. You could feel his pain as he shared with you this horrifying time.

Literally this guy is traumatized…….in the Nigerian culture to be a bricklayer is downgrading especially for a graduate but trust me in advanced society it’s not. In the US people take students loan to go to school…..while some go to trade school with no hassle of paying back loan and after completing learning a trade they earn more and live a better life than some of those who went to school because trade me are well sort after. I wish there could be a go fund me for this guy so he could get on his feet again. Honestly I admire him and wish Nigerian youths should emulate him.
Thank you very much sir. This is encouraging.
You're right about the dignity of labour in the developed world but for someone with economics degree to venture into construction without proper certification is a recipe for disaster.
He was trained, perhaps by a labourer who wasn't certified too. You can't do such work in developed society without trade test certification.
@@adekunleadeyemo3016 I will need to get the trade test certification then. But we don't work without an engineer looking after us to make sure we're doing what is right. It is well ☹️
Why is there an age limits on getting a job in Nigeria? 32 years is very young. It would be regarded as discrimination in the western world. Thank God for his life, hopefully some one comes up and hire him.
32 years too young to work?🤔
@@ayotundeoluwamayowaolagbem9456 I don't understand what you mean but if retirement age is 60-65 years, he can still contribute about 33 years into the Nigerian workforce. The society is just setting up her citizens for failure, period.
He needs some sort of help for post traumatic stress disorder and financial support.
The information is so clear to everyone, 15 floors is the foundation not 21.
In construction will call that human errors.
congratulations and thank God for your life
God have put you in a better place unknowingly to you.
There are so many options for you aside from being an economist, you can be a developer, a contractor, and if you have the opportunity to travel, what you are doing now will fetch you a lot of money than many white collar jobs .
You have a good skill that cannot be taken away from you.
May the Lord guide you.
Amen 🙏🏾
Xyvestre to God be the glory that you survived in one piece. God that spared your life that day surely has plans for you. They shall be revealed in due time. It is not right that a graduate of Economics because of unavailability of jobs is subjected to work as a bricklayer for a very paltry salary. I pray God heals you from the trauma and emotional wounds emanating from the sad incident. I pray God will place you in a Job befitting your educational qualifications. May the souls of all who died in the incident rest in perfect peace.

Well done Rave🙌👌💪

He definitely needs some counseling

We bless God for your life. Glory be to God
Glory to Him alone
I have always said the building was over loaded. I understand perfectly what he is saying about the thickness of the plastering, that added to the dead load of the structure.
I cannot imagine, this man myst feel the freefall everytime he goes to sleep prayers his way
To the GOD Almighty be all the glory that you are among them that survived.
To Him be all the glory

O my God ...tears...where does one even begin ?
God would use this medium to fix the survivor up.
His situation is the reality of Nigerian graduates.
God that saved him sure have a reason for keeping him
"God that saved him"?
So God allowed the other people to die????

God didn't allow anyone to die,it was Nigerian system that made those people to die.But he lucked out .Despite the horrible system. He was saved
@@aminaolayinka5246 exactly, is the Nigeria system that resulted to that death victims. If it is in another country that evacuation will not last up to 3days

A poor man has no voice. If he criticises the owner he will be without a job. Also due to poverty the owner knows everyone including the governor can be bribed to look the other way. Poverty has eroded into every fabric of society. The real battle in Nigeria is a battle of hearts and minds.

Did not realise they put age limits to jobs being advertised in Nigeria. I don't understand how a 32 years old person is now too old but in top government positions it is all the old people that have passed retirement age that is everywhere.

I am afraid of our faith in this part of the world, especially (NIGERIA). It is quite unfortunate that people are truly being religious but not being Godly.
Very sad, those people died as a result of some persons overlooking the consequences' of quark technical advisers and greedy business men. May the souls of all that perished rest in peace.

This interview is not complete. What did he notice that made him decide to leave the site by December first week?
You are correct. He did say he noticed something and would be leaving by Dec.
You probably didn't finish the interview. He explained his concerns.
You can't put that on public domain guys! It was edited out. This was not live.
That can lead to him being exterminated. As it is, his life is even in danger for the little he said. He should watch his back.
He said he notice the building was approved for 15 storey but had be built to 21 storey, as a bricklayer he knowns it is overloaded.
You probably didn’t finished watching this video
Can you please let us have his contact
They should give this man job o
So, a 32 yr person is considered too old to be given a job in Nigeria? God knows how much suffering this guy endured to finish college and at the end of the day couldn’t find a job to support himself. This is really sad!
My God grant him his heart desires in Jesus name, amen.
Amen 🙏🏾
I need d survivor Infor pls pple
The developer may not have understood the implication of the heavy thickness of the plastering, the engineers should have known better.
No amount of thickness of plastering can make a well fortified high rise structure collapse. Let's not trivialise things here.
You should have asked Good question: which floor where you went it fell, how did you escape. How did the building fall, did you notice any damage on the pillars, do you suspect a sabotage? How was the fall, sudden or slowly? Etc
He already asked those questions
You didn't watch the video cheif
I watched it...it wasn't very clear. It's as if the guy wasn't actually inside the building. I'm looking forward to hearing from someone who was actually in the building and escaped. Someone who can describe vividly. But anyways great content. Thanks for sharing
It is very obvious you didn’t follow the story. Your question was clearly answered by the guy, he even brought out the key to showed that he was about to take sand up.
The last time I checked, it is usually a machine (crane) that conveys materials from the outside into a magnificient building as a 21 storey. Why were labourers
We use hoist in this particular site. Sure you have seen it too before. So the labourers loads the hoist with the sand which is then driven up to the floor it is to be offloaded
This is interesting. 🤔
Thank God for his life. He certainly needs some therapy.
Thanks to God for sparing your life, God will give you a good job and grant you good success in Jesus name.
Amen 🙏🏾
32 years too old but ancient fellows occupying government positions for forever. Smh naija I hail thee.
As a trained geoscientist /engineer ,I am lost for words ...I feel a lot was not checked structurally .we live in a country where people do not know the impact of load on structures .There are structural calculations and of course impacts on buildings .Totally sad 🤦 I pray the families find peace .
Amen 🙏🏾
As in I was also so scared I couldn’t sleep the day I watch the video of the collapse building God heal every heart and soul involved in this tragedy
Amen 🙏🏾
20k salary , wickedness
Too Deep
If you start a foundation for 14 floors. the technology from the structural engineers is based in 14 floors, to add 7 more floors, the building should have beem ripped down , re-calibrated for 21 floors. Just science, adding beams to add more levels with a structure that was desingned for 14 floors would not hold , basic physics. May all the workers and those who lost their lives RIP .
Age Limit for workers in Nigeria, I am laughing so hard i am about to fall off my prayer mat🤣🤣🤣🤣 because, how does one describe the METHUSELAHS (some already showing advanced stages of DEMENCIA) who ARE/HAVE been dictating Nigerian Politics for decades and who REFUSE TO RETIRE. Thereby blocking the chances of young up and coming Politicians ??? SPRING CHICKENS????🤣🤣🤣🤣
By the way? Whatever hapened to "The young shall grow"?? Eh???!
In summary, he cut corners. He isn’t human enough to consider the safety of the workers and aftermath the building completely. This is pure greed.
🔥🔥🔥🔥
May God console those that lost their love one. The whole country is mourning.
Brother you have every cause to praise God all the days of your life. Psalm 103:4.
Sanwo. Please. Is. Time. To. Resign. This is. On. Your. Watch. The crazy. Things
Well. In. Nigeria. People. Hardly. Resign. Mr. Sanwolu. Wouldn't. Read. Your. Comment.

The rubbish employers we have in Nigeria - 32 years is too old for the lot! Yet we wonder why...mtchewwwww!
What is the faith of the other two buildings left?
I promise you no one is gonna trust those buildings… nobody can trust how solid they are cos of what has happened. It’s all wasted time and efforts plus money.
The two buildings letft should be demolished
☹️
Those ones are strong. Handled by previous contractors.
Any number for this guy pls
Politicians are to blame for ALL our woes in Nigeria. A graduate in economics going to work in an unskilled manual labour job because he is not employable.
The developer opted for cheap labour with little expertise and experience. Instead of allowing a construction company to handle it from start to finish. Some flats were sold as high as 1 million dollars. It's somehow.
Construction company engage artisans too not spirits The main structure had been constructed it's the finishing.
greed !!!
Too deep
So sorry he had to go through this, I hope he doesn't feel guilty for the loss of his colleagues who he assigned to work that never made it. 😀
How is your comment helpful? And what is funny to you? People lost their lives and you find it funny? Disgraceful really, and yet we wonder why our country has so many problems. Rubbish
For God's sake why the smile.
🥺😒
God saved him for a purpose..
They live in the uncompleted building? They also cook in there? Umm....
First some of them come from other states to work there, secondly the ones who live in Lagos will have difficulties resuming early due to traffic. If they have to start work by 3:am or 4am. Oshibano was in a rush to complete that project.
My condolences to the deceased, Dat is why it is very bad you involve urself with a profession dat is not your field..... Femi Osibona need to study construction despite he employed professionals to know if dey are not doing d right things like d plastering overload dis guy talked about.
What is the purpose of this interview. Who sent the interviewer and the interviewee
His is alive to tell the story
MAY GOD CONSOLE THE FAMILIES OF ALL THE VICTIMS. BUT VERY PATHETIC TO ASK LABOURERS THAT WILL WORK TILL EVENING TIME TO BE WAKING UP BY 3.30AM!!! AND THAT WHOEVER THAT CAN NOT COPE SHOULD LEAVE!!!
My condolences to the families of the lost lives.God knows best!!
Nigeria, the politicians should look at themselves in the eyes and question where is this country going? It’s obvious we are going backwards!

....yes load 🤷.Anybody reading this should here oo ,there's always a structural calculation for buildings ,and all of this have implications on the integrity of the structure, foundations etc 🤦
Was budgeting of materials not clearly written for each floor? Aside this, why constant variations?
What happened? Why did the building collapse? Are they investigating to see what happened? And to make sure that it doesn’t happen again?
A panel of inquiry has been set up by the governor of Lagos State to determine the remote and immediate causes of the building collapse. I presume that answers your question.
Imagine mfb paying 20k as salary for a graduate
So you don't know. Banks especially fidelity pay graduate 30k. And stil reduce the salary to 19k because of COVID. Whereas the ogas go home with lump sum as if graduates don't have need.
Hmmmmm? I said it? Additional loads OMASE O?
Hey!!! 18pple, 12 pple etc….God ooo
