Fisher's Big Wheel was a discount department store chain that operated in several states, including Ohio, during the 1970s and 1980s. The Conneaut, Ohio location, along with many other stores in the chain, closed in the early 1990s due to a variety of financial difficulties. The company struggled to compete with larger national retailers like Walmart, Kmart, and Target, which had more buying power and could offer lower prices. Fisher's Big Wheel filed for bankruptcy in 1993, leading to the closure of most, if not all, of its remaining stores, including the one in Conneaut, Ohio. This closure was part of a larger trend at the time, as many regional discount chains faced increasing competition from national retailers and the changing landscape of consumer shopping habits.
An awesome video, Wallie! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 Here in Weirton WV, we had a Fishers Big Wheel store which was located on Three Springs Drive where Gabes is located. Fishers Big Wheel didn't own their own store buildings as they were leased out. My Mom worked at the Weirton WV location for 18 years. Fishers Big Wheel was a really good department store. I shopped in the store alot. The Weirton location opened up in 1974, which was the same year the Weirton Kmart store opened. The company went bankrupt in 1993 and every store closed. My Mom retired in 1988. As for the Weirton location, Fishers Big Wheel had a 22 year lease on the store building.
This puts me in the mind of the Ames in Kentucky you had filmed awhile back, with all of the merchandise just going to waste and rotting away due to mold and water damage. A shame, indeed, to see these places go to destitution.
Not to far from where I grew up at, there was a Fishers Big Wheel. I don't remember exactly what date that it closed it would have been no later than the early 80's, if not earlier. They were pretty cool stores to shop in if I remembered right. I know if that stuff that was stored in there from Save a lot, I definitely would not want it used back in a store anywhere. Great video, Wallie. Kudoa!!!
EDIT: I really hope this is old product that is just going to the dump. Maybe it is. ORIG.: In my opinion, this is a health hazard that needs to be reported to the proper authorities, especially if they are indeed selling those products. And I'm not even half way through the video. This is very, VERY bad. Good idea in theory and on paper, TERRIBLE idea in reality to store stuff there. I seriously hope that's all going to the dump or something.
We had a Fisher's Big Wheel in North Ridgeville,Ohio when I was a kid and my parents shopped there all the time. In the surrounding areas we used to have Hills, Gold Circle, K Mart, and others. But, we only went to those if Big Wheel didn't have what we were looking for.
Wow Awesome first find abandoned or not fishers big wheel I've not been one of these before so that's might be expect why I did not know garbage inside.
I grew up in a small town south of Pittsburgh, Waynesburg Pa. You recently did a video there of the abandoned Pizza Hut. We had a Fishers Big Wheel that opened in 1972, closed in 1994. My mom worked there 22 years, my sister still has her red smocks and various employee badges. ❤
There used to have a fisher's big wheel where I'm at. Sometime before I was born it became a pamida when they took over some of the old big wheel locations before big wheel went of business all together. It's now a discount drug Mart & a dollar tree.
In Uhrichsville Ohio there is what im pretty sure used to be a fishers big wheel in the claymont center :) dollar tree/family dollar is next to it :) i could be wrong though 🤣
Alrighty I live in Conneaut and remember when Big wheel was in the Plaza along with Value King for the grocery store. Today it not abandoned the Grocery store that took the place of Value King was Save A Lot and they also lease they space that Fishers had and use it as storage for the non perishable foods they don’t have room for in the stockroom.
I've talked with the owner of Save a lot many times. He is NOT leasing it because he owns the whole plaza. Both building including the one that had the movie theater in it. He has told me that he owns it all except for the old Perkins which is now a Mexican restaurant and also the old bank which is now a Vets office.
@@Charleshawn66 That don’t surprise me every interaction I’ve had with him it seemed to me that he was stuck on himself and he was just better then half the towns population am I wrong possibly but that’s how he’s come a crossed to me.
@@mconley600 I’ve probably talked with him 15 times in the last 5 years. I never saw that all. He was always helpful and friendly to me. If I needed something like the pink sugar packets two visits ago he walked me all the way to them. A few years ago he put a lot of money into work into save a lot and showed me all the changes like the new 2 long walls of freezers on the west side of the store.
I'd report that. If in fact that is current storage for an open store you don't want to sell/buy stuff that sitting in an abandoned and moldy old store/warehouse. Too many people can get sick.
No there stockroom is actually fairly small for the size of the store and just don’t have the space needed to keep adequate product in stock for the week.
I loved the Madison, Ohio Fisher's Big Wheel! It was a nice store when my children were growing up! They used to do a triple coupon day and great clearance and seasonal sales! The building was knocked down and the store next to it was Giant Eagle and now Marc's. I hate that they are storing food and items in a mold infested building! Unhealthy for the employees, and for those buying those items.😢
Why in the world would you want to store things in this building that is in rough shape with mold growing on things and you can smell it? They have gotta be outta of their mind to place things in there.
By This popped up on my Wall today (10/14/24)-then five posts down was your video of a closed Kmart in the same town from six years ago; this building strongly reminds me of an old Kmart store. How close is this store to that Kmart-or is it the same building?
All the years I have been watching your channel Wallie this was an odd one. Why would a store have back stock in such a moldy, disgusting place like this
I live in Conneaut. In the early 2000’s the old Fisher’s store was being used by some rather dubious (mob?)people selling furniture & appliances. I’ve not seen any physical activity here in years. I used to work in zoning. The graffiti was the work of a guy about 15 years ago that was caught & court ordered to clean up the graffiti here & around the area, but never did. I remember when the plaza was built & Fisher’s Big Wheel opened. It’s really a blight on the area that the law department had no real interest in pursuing when I worked for the city.
I lived in the 'Burgh for 3 years. During my time there, I think I missed a grand total of one day of work due to winter weather. Pittsburgh proper averages about 44 inches of snow per winter, although I've seen much higher amounts in other areas of Allegheny County and other suburbs. Certainly a better winter option than Erie. 😂
Great video but I wish you would have worn a mask while walking a rounded the molded are a. But first and foremost hopefully you can find out if that is new items stored to be sold or old to be thrown away. Thanks for sharing.

Yesssssss....came here as a kid all the time. Thanks bro.

As always great video 👍
I always wondered what this place was. It reminded me of an Ames with the double doors.
Awesome video

Awesome find Wallie! Someone told me the discount drug mart in north royalton was once a fishers big wheel
Also the marcs in strongsville and the super dollar general in brunswick
Cool! Thanks for sharing!🏚
Glad you enjoyed!
@@WallieB26 I always do!
There is also an abandoned 2 theater cinema in the stores across the parking lot by the Chinese restaurant
Amazing video love the vids I’m a huge fan of you and am inspired by you!

Great Video wallie keep it up buddy :D
Another great video Wallie!!! That would make me nervous too if they are storing food in that moldy ex store though.
My mom worked for Fishers Big Wheel in Avon Lake, Ohio
When it's that bad they can't be storing stuff in there. Even the prepackaged stuff can get moldy or bad especially the paper products. 😢
Great video so rare to find these. Also did you see the closing rite aid in area when there
Good video wallieb26

I think that Save a lot store has to be poorly run if they have overstock in side of an abandoned store
No there stockroom is actually fairly small for the size of the store and just don’t have the space needed to keep adequate product in stock for the week.
Cool video that was fun
Hey Wallie I found a Kmart in Conneaut, OH at 199 Gateway Ave. I wasn't sure if you got that one on video or not.
I would not eat anything from there

nice ⛈️ ⚡️ 🌩 😎 👍
I heard a giant beaver has run out of Christmas Tree Cakes!
I recall one in South Lyon, MI. If my memory is correct. Late 1980s.
The Big Wheel that was near me is now a Dodge Jeep Chrysler and Ram Dealership
Nice early to the party 🎉 💪🇺🇸😎

Hey I have question !! Is Pittsburgh safe to live at weather wise do people miss a lot of work ? Through winter ?

Note to self: next time I roll up on a vacant building, I should grab my kn95 mask
Save a lot is so nasty. No surprise that they store product in a moldy building.

Fishers Big Wheel the chain went out of business in 1994.
Can you visit the abandoned Chuck. E Cheese in Monroeville, PA
I've wanted to but I noticed it was all papered up.
This is concerning
I'm wondering if they own the toy company
Probably abandoned. You can tell how gross it is inside.
Hope you filmed a train video while here.
