For anyone struggling, an easy way to get a parallel or tapered piece on the lathe is to set your tool rest either parallel or tapered to the piece toward the direction you want to go. Use your finger as a stop for the tool against the tool rest so it cant go past the depth your finger set. Works everytime.
You were actually demonstrating the finger stop in the video. Nice job.

    Hi All,
Using A wide sanding block with very coarse paper is a simple way to shape wood on the Lethe. Last week when I made the classic cherry bench ua-cam.com/video/SK9yZcZ2_rY/v-deo.html most difficult part for me was turning the long cylinder after the detail at the top of the leg. By using a wide sanding block and very coarse paper I was able to create the legs without any high or low spots. Hope this tip helps you out.
All the best and happy woodworking,
    Jon

The table is gorgeous! And I’m sure your wife will love that rolling pin. That’s a great thing about the lathe, it doesn’t take much material or time and you can get some good practice and have something useful at the end.

Thanks for this how to for beginning lathe users. I would love for you to make a series of instructional videos for absolute beginning lathe users. I find the UA-cam videos already out there on learning to use the lathe hard to follow. You are an excellent teacher and I feel sure that I would learn a lot from your instruction and examples. Thanks again.

Jon. I enjoy your videos, especially when you share your art. My primary woodworking now is turning. I'm retired and I have found turning to be my passion. I'll tell you like I was told, there is no right or wrong way to turn, just what works for you. A very good job
on turning your bench legs. They are not ment to be identical, because they are custom made by your hands, not a machine. Good job,
keep turning, you will only get better, as you did with your many other woodworking skills.

Scraping away the wood like a savage! Then out comes the 40 grit gouge. 🤣

Nice video. I would suggest that a penetrating oil, like mineral oil or walnut oil, is better for kitchen tools that the board wax. While the wax looks good, it stays on the surface and will quickly be rubbed off when the rolling pin is in use. An oil will penetrate a bit and last much longer - and be easier to reapply as needed, too.

Jk Canvas yes I used to, but I found that the top of my cabinet saw was much smoother and flatter, so I switched to using that.

Curious what kind of plywood did you use for the bed with drawers on the bottom and is that the plywood you typically use?

My wife, also a baker, watched this over my shoulder with a gleam in her eye. A lathe as an anniversary present? Perhaps a bridge too far...
