For me, a biscuit joiner is a must have tool in the workshop. I use a biscuit joiner on more than half of the projects that I make in the workshop. When using a biscuit joiner, the biscuits really don’t add much additional strength to the wood joint, but they are a big help in aligning the boards and making glue ups much easier.

Hi Everyone, I know there’s been a lot of talk about biscuit joiner’s lately so I thought I’d let you know that I’m a big fan… I’ve been using a biscuit joiner since the late 80s and probably use a biscuit joiner on more than half of the projects I make. I’ll probably continue to use a biscuit joiner as often as I do until I save up enough $ to buy a domino ;). Have a great day all! And check out the video on my new mobile workstation if you didn’t already.... it’s a great addition to my small shop. ua-cam.com/video/viQtUujxq-8/v-deo.html .

From your picture of the coffee table that you built, the locations of the biscuits appear to be divots. I refinish ward wood floors, and have found that if you sand before the wood is dry you will be sanding swollen wood, leaving a shallow depression after the wood drys. Maybe just letting the joint dry for a couple days could prevent this problem, or just offset the joint like you do.

    • @MJ-nb1qn
      @MJ-nb1qn 4 роки тому +4

Scott, you are correct. You need to let the glue dry completely (maybe 1 to 2 days depending on environment) before any sanding or planing is done. There can be a lot of glue at the ends of the biscuit that needs to dry. Remember, wood moves. I have used them for years and never had them telescope.

Its a great point that you need to reference off the work piece and not the table. I think that is where a lot of people go wrong. Additionally, using higher quality biscuits will help as the biscuits expand once in the slots and covered with glue. Higher quality biscuits have a more uniform expansion rate and therefore keep the work piece uniform.

      @@OldDunollieman
With a glue joint you are just relying on the chemical bond between the two surfaces. So while it is strong there is always a chance that it could fail.
Biscuits are a floating joint that bonds internally within the wood with the glue. Most the tests that are used to break biscuit joints go far beyond real world usage and it is the wood that actually fails not the glue.
If you glue a biscuit joint you and break it then the glue is not going to be the failing point the wood is.

Jack, one of my first projects was a curio cabinet I made out of cherry. It was terrible. We sent our dining room furniture and had it professionally re-finished. It was gorgeous. The person that refinished the furniture would not let us come and get it. He insisted on delivering it so it wouldn't get scratched. He came into the dining room, saw the curio hanging on the wall, and commented as to how beautiful it was. When I began to point out my shortcomings, he stopped me right there and said, "Of course you know where all the mistakes are. Don't let that prevent me from enjoying looking at it." So Jack, I'm sure when you look at your bench seat, you see the mistakes. Everyone sees the beauty of what you built. I'm sure it;s gorgeous! That curio still hangs on the wall after 25 years. She loves it.

Agreed, big fan here too, especially for alignment/registration when you work alone and multi board edge glue ups turn into a one arm paperhanger act. I was delighted to find one (along with a BUNCH of other woodworking equipment!) in the metal dumpster last recycling day. Same brand as mine (Porter Cable) and at a minimum it was worth grabbing for spare parts.

Jon, I'd welcome your thoughts on cutting biscuit slots with a router and a 5/32" slotted bit. Depth would be controlled by bearing size to accommodate different sized biscuits. It may not be as entirely convenient as a biscuit joiner but since I already ready own one it would save me some money. I made a jig to align with my marks so that would help with precise placement. Great stuff as always. Thanks.

I don’t know about the Telegraph you had on the table top I’ve been using a biscuit jointer for 30 years and never had that happen. Biscuits are one of the best and fastest joints you can use, all of my cabinets that I build are biscuited together and in all the years I’ve been in the business I’ve never had a failure. That being said I would highly recommend a lamello machine over any other, incredible results and always accurate it’s worth the extra money you don’t need the adjustable one just the entry model.

Thank you for the video. Two things.
First, I would like to see someone compare a single Domino strength to simply using two 5 cent Lamello Biscuits on top of one another. No one has done that. Even a clone Domino is 17 cents.
Second, I used calipers and measured the thickness of 30 each of DeWalt and Swiss-made Lamello plate joiner Biscuits. Lamello was 1000 for $46.37 from Amazon, which is 4.6 cents each. DeWalt was $7.98 for 100 from Lowes, which is 8 cents each. I calculated the mean and standard deviation of the thicknesses and the Lamello were more than 3x as uniform. 97.7% of Lamello are predicted to be between 3.69 and 4.00mm. DeWalt are 3.34 to 4.31mm. The goal is to be as close to 4mm without going over. Visually, the Lamello have a glue-gripping pattern on each side. The DeWalt had a more shallow grid on one side.
No sense in judging biscuits without using Lamello brand.

Good tip about choosing the correct reference surface when using a power hand joiner. Always use that front plate.
I jumped past the biscuit joiner to the Domino DF 700. Not everyone can do that, they are pricey. I've added Seneca's DF 500 conversion kit so I can use smaller dominoes with just one machine.

Not all wood species come in the width you want due to the fact that old growth forests are either gone or protected from logging. Also some trees reach a maximum diameter at maturity, unlike humans! A bench that width needs a 80 to 100 year tree to get clear wood out of. Hardwood like that hickory (just guessing) just isn’t possible because the species don't grow wide enough and any that did will cost you a fortune. Hardwoods come from trees that have leaves (deciduous) and softwoods from trees that have needles (coniferous) like evergreens such as pine, redwood, cedar, etc. . Oak is probably the widest girth hardwood but an oak 3-4’ in diameter is a thing of beauty and nearly 300 years old. It would be a shame to cut it down for a dining room table.

    Expansion contraction, on finishes
If your project moves wont that tend to pull on the finish material and cause cracking like poly and such a hard finnish

Travis Oliver which is also 5-6x the price. Not as necessary for an amateur woodworker. If you’re a pro that does this for a living then for sure it’s cost vs time saved and it’s definitely worth it.

Although there are some similarities, they are different tools that have different advantages and disadvantages. It's like comparing a finishing nail to a deck screw.

How tightly are the biscuits supposed to fit into the slots? I have a Porter Cable biscuit joiner I bought in the late 1990s, and the slots it cuts are noticeably thicker than the biscuits. The biscuits wiggle around enough that they aren't really much help for alignment. The boards can still shift up or down by at least 1/32".
Do I just have a crappy biscuit joiner? I've been thinking of replacing it with a Domino, but if a different biscuit joiner would work better for alignment I could save a lot of money. (Of course, a Domino is good for other sorts of joinery too.)

@@Jason-uz8hj I'm pretty sure I'm using the right biscuits. Even the Porter Cable branded biscuits are loose in the slots it cuts. Next time I need to glue up a panel, maybe I'll buy one of the DeWalt or Makita biscuit joiners that get good reviews and see if they work better.

According to Steve Ramsey, you don't need all those tools. A hammer, a level and a sharpie are enough to build the Burj Khalifa

I strongly disagree: it’s a neat tool. Very useful for somebody, completely useless for many many other woodworkers. Those kind of videos can lead to wrong purchases by those that get started, see how good you are as a woodworker, and decide that they need one to be like you. If you’re looking at this video to understand if you need one, you probably don’t need one.

Luca Pelati It’s all about marketing bet you most of this guys talking about how neat and necessary a biscuit joiner is are getting paid to do so, lately woodworking is becoming more popular and companies just want to sell products, them like ants people just buy before even trying to see if they can do without it to end hanging the tool on the wall and use once a year or offer it up in craigslist two years later trying to get the same money they paid while new...thats a vicious circle

It takes years to learn hand cut joints. My father is a traditional arts and crafts carpenter and he was amazed by his first use of biscuit joints.
