Oh wow ... I had a light teal blue 82 diesel Olds Custom Cruiser wagon and it was one of the best cars I ever owned. The diesel did give up the ghost with a blown head gasket, but had the engine remanufactured to a gas 350, and it rolled on to well over 250k miles before the rust got to it. I loved that car!!! The best family wagon ever for my family.
I don't know why, but I've been getting a lot of Olds Diesel videos in my recommended feed. Not that I'm complaining.
A good friend of mine is the son of the owner of the Oldsmobile dealership that was in Winchester, VA (obviously out of business now). He has frequently told the story of how these full-size Oldsmobile's were wildly popular in the late 70's until the mid 80's when they went to front wheel drive. He said they sold very quickly and with minimal discounts. These are a far cry from the cars we have today. Sadly, by the time GM correctly the problems with the diesel engines, Americans had lost interest in them. Cars today have no style, no pizzazz, and no character. It is like driving a computer. What a loss. Thanks for sharing this gorgeous example of American engineering and excellence.
+Jeffrey Van Ness I believe he was referring to the 6cyl. diesels , Not the V8 350 rear wheel drive in this video. They were grenade's set to blow up @ 30k .
4thstooge yeah the six cylinder diesels even carried over briefly into the new front drive 98 cars in 1985. The bad reputation was already out there so few people ordered their cars with them. Today they are some of the more rare 98's to own as a collector.
takes me back in time
i drove one of these in the eighties and loved it
Wow! A diesel wagon is pretty rare indeed! Very nice!
the oldsmobile diesel engine was a victim of poor maintainance even a DURAMAX IS NOT BETTER THAN OLDSMOBILE LET,S NOT FORGETTHE OLDSMOBILE ENGINES WERE BUILT FOR CARS WHILE THE DURAMAX IS BUILT FOR LIGHT AND MEDIUM TRUCKS BUILD QUALITY IS EXACTLY THE SAME THE OLDS USED A NOGULAR CAST IRON CRANKSHAFT BUT THE DURAMAX USES FORGED STEEL AND STILL HAS DURABILITY PROBLEMS IF THE OLDS WAS NOTHING BUT A DIESELIZED GAS ENGINE THEN WHAT DO YOU CALL THE DURAMAX PERFECT HARDLY TODAY,S FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM YESTERDAY,S BUILD QUALITY
This is a super nice example of this model. All optioned out with nice wire wheel covers and cornering lamps. The lighter oak paneling looks much better than the darker tone they used later on.
What a beauty! My dad was a used car dealer and I remember as a kid around 1989 we had a brown 1982 diesel Cutlass sedan. It sat in a garage in the backyard because we couldn't sell it. No one wanted those diesels especially with the engine problems with earlier year models. Really, a big issue was people didnt know how to crank them. I got in trouble for cranking it right away when I was moving it for a wash before the warning dash light went out. I was always confused as to why we didn't use it as our daily driver because it was so nice and clean. We had a mint diesel Oldsmobile Cutlass and a blue/grey 1982 Cadillac Seville bustleback, just sitting in the back yard garage waiting for a seller. Those are a part of my childhood memories, lol.
It’s one of my dreams to own one of these
I'd love to have it....In the 80s - 90s 1/2 ton pickup and Oldsmobile Cutlass wagon.... really enjoyed them
I own a 1982 Chevy Caprice Deluxe Estate DIESEL WAGON. Absolutely love it! 113k miles and going strong today!
This car was owned by an elderly gentleman who had it garaged and meticulously cared for it in Vancouver, Washington before my friend Miles bought it. Had the pleasure of test driving this immaculate 1982 Olds Custom Cruiser Wagon, had only 85k miles at the time. Nobody bought it. Quite collectible now. Headliner was perfect original had the factory new GM smell as well. It is a pleasure to see Chevrolet and Olds wagons driving around now in 2024. Has that Wagon Queen Family Truxter, Chevy Chase/ Beverly De'Angelo 80s vibe! Awesome! Hope this car is out there still owned by a collector taking great care of it! :)
I think what that car so rare is that it still has the original 5.7 diesel engine in it, the fact that it still runs after 30 years is quite impressive, you should be proud.
I just love the sound of old cars!
Me too.
I had one for years. It's probably still running today.
wow, absolute gem
The car was sold in December 2012, to a Lotus Dealer in NJ.. I have many fond memories and can vouch for how nice it really was :)
Miles Buck how much did you sell it for
Miles Buck can you put me in contact with an owner or who you sold it to at least?
I hope whoever owns it now actually knows what they are doing and didn't rip the diesel engine out because they are too stupid to take care of them. If I could I'd love to get my hands in this and daily drive it.
I saw the body of this car was made from wood. was that strong enough ?
I'm in south Carolina so here our vehicles are solid I will not sale a rare car to anyone in the rust belt I've had guys contact me trying to buy cars from me all the time I refuse to send a rare car to its death even if it's going in garage nope
my sister and brotherinlaw had a 85 wagon, same as yours, but green blue with wood on the side, gas engine but was a great car, smooth as silk to drive :)
Beautiful car. I had a an Electra estate wagon in nearly as good condition. I foolishly parted with it and have regretted it ever since. Hang on to this beaut!!!!
WOW What a wagon!
ah...the good old days !
What a gem.
Nice car! Reminds me of Lethal Weapon 2. Lol! Hey Riggs I got my wife's wagon back. Except it's a diesel.
Pretty much the nicest car I've ever seen
Olds diesels then were good engines. All the bugs had been worked out from late 70's.
Great video of a great rare diesel Olds wagon. I have 4 Oldsmobile diesels and am looking to buy another one.
HERBHOOVERS I’ve got one 79 custom cruiser 937776717four
I had an 82 but not diesel. I noticed the center of the steering wheel has a different design than most. Boy I sure do miss mine.
What a rare breed wagon!
If I had that I could pull a 35' travel trailer, I could travel America !
thats a beautiful wagon!
this is my dream car
Hmmm sold to someone in NJ - this means it is getting closer for me to own!
wow that is sharp!
That car is amazing. It takes me back to when Ronald Reagan won the white house. The cold war, AT&T divided apart, the first artificial heart was placed in a human. This car is amazing. I have a 1981 Oldsmobile 98 Diesel.
You should hold on to this car if possible, or make sure it falls into the right hands. This car is actually museum quality and you might consider calling automotive museums to let them looks at the video to see if they would like to buy it.
Incredible!
Wished I would have seen this when it was originally posted
If this car is ever for sale, please let me know!
My friend has an 82 Toronado with the 5.7 diesel and it has 500,000 miles on it, but it does have ARP head studs.
Wonderful car you have
I also love these diesel custom cruisers so well that I have two but sadly my 81 in nearly mint shape was hit hard twice by a careless driver and now needs major repairs.. It did limp it's way home though. Tough cars they are.
I must find one of these.
It looks good.
Superb. !!
Very beautifull car
Tell u what who in the hell would want a minivan or suv compared to one of these so much better!
GM,s future was yesterday
Agreed 100%!
I know. These were way cooler, despite what most people think. They forced drivers to drive more gently and they didn't block the friggin view for the vehicle behind!
@@AlexanderCrump And I'm a Wagon fan. I bet that, if I stuck a 6.5 TD in one of these 80s models with the right gearing, I could get 40 MPG on the Highway in it. I'm not exaggerating, I already have a 6.5 in a 99 Suburban and it still gives me 20 MPG combined in rural driving. I must have light gearing in it. If I stuck a 6.5 in a 91 - 96 Roadmaster, I could get it even better. Maybe I could break 50 HWY if I modified the car aerodynamically and added WMI (Water Methanol Injection) to the air intake.
This was the first car my parents had that I remember and the first car I ever twisted wrenches on EXACTLY the same. Same paint same diesel same
WWWOW! Nice!
Cool!
Beautiful wagon. Shame we've gotten away from the station wagon like this in favor of SUVs. The only thing with this car was by the time the engine was made right, the damage done from prior year engines was hard to forget. Great idea, bad execution.
+senorkaboom Typical GM Take a good idea, cut corners bringing it to market screw the consumer, THEN fix the problem later. Too bad it never worked. The public would never buy one of the experiments after being screwed the first time. Examples: Corvair suspensions, cars roll over wait til the next generation makeover. too little to late Chevy Vega wildly popular car but the aluminum engines burned oil. GM re engineered the engines 4 years too late. Then the above mentioned Olds Diesels they rarely went over 30k without grenading, Engines were fixed way too late to make anybody want to buy one.
+4thstooge The idea (Diesel Wagon, though a 6.2 would probably be better) is still a winner in my mind though, when the engine's working properly. If it's working properly it's awesome for road trips and even if I don't know much about it, I still can learn about making my own fuel for it.
No water separator and weak head bolts were issues on these according to what I heard but hat wasn't the only problem these had; mechanics didn't know how to work on them either.
Very true
What a beauty bill.Did you sell it??
I still was my car had the original paint on it. That would look really nice. But I never had a garage for it like you probably odd for yours
I have an '85 with a gas engine with only 66,000 miles . . . what are you asking for this diesel ?
Mmm very nice. Have a look at my one. What's the performance like vs. a 307? Cheers
That's the car from Poltergeist!
nice car!!
Please i want to hear the v8 diesel
Miles buck I'm very interested in this car. Would you happen to know where it is today?
I am looking for one of that
That is a car! What a beaut - if only a big corp like GM could have done diesel V8 right the first time. Just enough clatter to say "I'm a diesel!". 105 horse was small, but it's diesel torque that counts, and imagine if GM could have done a turbo diesel next ... from the company that brought you Futurama and the Firebird turbine cars ... must have lost talent in the 70's ...
A big comfortable car with small car fuel economy, I hate you that car should be mine.
I want!
I heard these cars could get pretty high MPGs, considering that they have automatic transmissions and aren't very aerodynamic and are about 4k pounds too. I wonder if they would get more than 30 MPG HWY if they came with manual transmissions?
Where are you located? Asking $?
Do you still have the car?
thats a sweet wagon, id sell replaceable cars that are a dime a dozen, IE NEW SMALL CARS THAT GET GREAT MPG, THEY ARE REPLACEABLE, A DIESEL WAGON IS NOT...anybody who would trade that station in on a car/truck, that is common and replaceable is foolish
Especially if that diesel wagon was a 1978 or 1979 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser with "Di-Noc" woodgrain paneling!
For sale?
Tell me you want to sell this?
Very quiet from most I’ve heard.
do you still have it for sale/where/price?
castirondude I’ve got one 937-776-717four
?
Being a 1982 model, I'd say the engine used was the improved DX block version if you say it is still original after all those years ago.
ClassicTVMan1981X yeah I believe they strengthed the blocks in 1981 and newer. Most of the problems were on the first generation versions from 1977-1980. 1981's and newer arent perfect but better.
At least V8, better than passat tdi lol
What's the thinking behind putting wood on a car's exterior ?!?
To make it look it's a wooden car or to try to inject some 'warmth' into the 'cold' metal car ?
Whatever the rationale, why no more such 'wood panelled' cars around nowadays in new cars ?
gas mileage was only slightly better with diesel. they had lots of problems with non-commercial diesel engines.
I get 30 mpg in mine just driving regularly but I do a lot of highway driving. Have a gas one that rarely tops 15
romu
It needs injectors. They are bottoming out.
Do you know what makes this wagon rare? Because no one wanted it when it was new either.
