    everyone talks bad about these engine, just gotta give it some love, replaced the head bolts and main bolts with ARP studs so that it can handle the compression properly and not blow a head gasket or lift the heads. and add a water separator then your good to go.

      Not worth it to most people. Way too much money to do all that, for what. 200hp maybe? If you're into it, God bless but most people turn their heads. In a video like this, it's more intriguing to the viewer to actually see one up and running, and somewhat reliable.

      It’s funny how people badmouth these by the time they quit making them they actually had most of the problems fixed but no one would buy them after that.but look at how many people buy 6.0 L power stroke’s now those are money pits. My friend has a fleet of power strokes on his farm most of them bullet proofed But still they’re not cost-effective when do you consider a couple of repair bills cost more than what he paid for the trucks with under 100,000 miles on them.Maintaining one of these is pennies in the bucket compared to a 6.0 power stroke Granted the power stroke has a lot more power but still not nearly as cool as one of these old 5.7’s. I know a guy that has a 85 Chevy truck with a 6.2 It has over 500,000 miles on it other than routine maintenance it’s had a clutch The fuel pump rebuilt and one set of heads put on it. Not bad for a motor people consider to be junk. Water in the fuel killed more of these than anything. They didn’t have a very good fuel system and the fuel was really crappy back then.

    Update:
    The Olds is still running like a champ, I put 30,000 miles on the car since I posted the video.
    Pump has been turned up all the way for two years now and I can get it up to 99 mph before it starts to govern out at 3850 rpm, all original head bolts and head gaskets.
    I have zero issues keeping up with traffic, the guy behind me will literally dissappear in a cloud of thick black smoke.
    I do notice the fuel filters are plugging up around 1000 miles or so, you can take them up to 2000 miles but the injection pump wants more fuel than the transfer pump can pull through the filter.
    I still change the engine oil at 2000 miles and use Rotella 15W-40.

    Yes. These folks started in the 1920’s and worked into owning over a thousand acres by the late 1970’s. We pulled bailed hay with an old 49 Chevy 3100 on four wheel wagons. The old truck had brakes on the right front wheel only. Early on much of the equipment and tractors was patched up hand me downs others had worn out. That was the first new car he ever had and he was in his fifties. By the 1980’s times were good with a new milk parlor, good tractors and implements.

      @Buc_Stops_Here 5 років тому +2

      @@localsheriff Sounds about right. One of the major changes after the first couple of years of production is that they added water separating fuel filtering systems so the engines did not fail like the first model years did. They enhanced the cooling to prevent overheating and reinforced the failing engine gasket in addition. This took care of the three major issues of the initial design and only then was it a relatively reliable engine. They really had a lot of issues when they rushed it to production initially. One of the worst engines ever initially.
