    My grandmother had a 1979 custom cruiser until 2002. At that point it had 400.000 miles. It barely ran anymore so she was forced to buy a newer car.

      I believe it. We got 532,000 miles out of a 1977 Ford LTD II Wagon, 351M engine.

      @@67marlins That wagon may have gotten 500,000 miles. Unfortunately my grandfather died. He kept it up. She couldn't afford to have the mechanics fix it up after he died. So it started to have problems.

    I did sell these from 78-80. Personally, I cannot remember any major issues with these cars when I sold them. Customers coming back unhappy with their purchase.
    I DO remember ordering a. 1980 Custom Cruiser with a Diesel, from February, April May is when they stopped producing cars for 1980, gearing up for 81. That car was not produced. Had to go to 81. Never found out what happened though.
    It was a $895 option at that time for the Diesel. Back then, gas was maybe 1.10 a gallon, that 895 would by a lot of gas.

      Remember--minivans killed the station wagon, first.

    • @myrtistaylor5759
      @myrtistaylor5759 Рік тому +1

      @@lego4virgo mini vans didn't really kill the station wagon they simply went out of fashion. The mini van was popular because you can stand upward when putting small children into the car rather than bending over or kneeling with the station wagon. The station wagon on the other hand can haul wayyy more stuff than a mini van (like a camper or boat) due to the V8 and full body on frame suspension. So it's not necessarily "better" it's just more like "trade offs" but they did go outa style was out sold by mini vans and then later suvs became more popular than the vans

    • @lego4virgo
      @lego4virgo Рік тому +1

      @@myrtistaylor5759 Which is why I said, "Minivans killed the station wagon" vs "Minivans were better than station wagons". Even as the minivan was starting to gain steam, there were households with both a wagon and a minivan, because of the reasons you mentioned--but--once the second generation Odyssey "talked up" the disappearing third row seat (it was in the first gen, which was built on the Accord platform), the station wagons' days were numbered.

    • @myrtistaylor5759
      @myrtistaylor5759 Рік тому +1

      @@lego4virgo saying it "killed it" I don't believe is the way to describe it. Yes full-size wagons were discontinued in by 96 due to poor marketing and gm dropped it to focus on the demand for the GMT-400 platform the Silverado was on. But what about the Volvo 600 series or the ford Taurus or mercury Sable? They were still building those for awhile. It fell out of style like clothes.

    • @lego4virgo
      @lego4virgo Рік тому +1

      @@myrtistaylor5759 Building and selling are two different things. Both wagons weren't selling close to what the Chrysler minivans were doing, and even GM was attempting to make its own brand of minivans to grab market share. The full-size wagons fell out of favor because you could put as much stuff in a minivan as you could that wagon and get better gas mileage.

      You might be suprised how aerodynamic a car can be while still being boxy. Check out the Renault 25, it carried the title for most aerodynamic production car, .30 to .28 depending on trim package.

    Your best bet back then wants to go to the used car lot and look for a 1976 station wagon with the Glide away tailgate with the lowest miles and send it to your favorite mechanic to be completely gone through then a stop at the body shop to make everything else Immaculate and let somebody else Drive the EPA mandate mobile sure they weren't that much smaller but 76 really was the last year of the real GM car that the government had didn't have a lot to do with. Today's cars are called one whack it's on a rollback. A 20 mile an hour Collision compromises the radiator and other parts of the vehicle making it undrivable imagine that and yes somehow people are buying them.
