The actor Lorenzo Music, who did the voice of Carlton the Doorman also wrote some episodes Rhoda and Mary Tyler Moore, was a writer and performer on the Smother's Brother's Comedy Hour, was the co-creator of The Bob Newhart Show, and was the distinctive voice of Garfield the cat.

Also the voice of Dr. Peter Venkman in "The Real Ghostbusters" animated cartoon series; later Bill Murray, who played the live-action Dr. V. did the voice of Garfield for the live-action/animated "Garfield" theatrical release.

I had my apartment broken into in my 20s. Several were broken into that day. It was a nice neighborhood and building. The person took all my jewellery. I was so scared to live there. Stayed at my friend's that night. Got a new lock. The police officer I had was awful. I lived in Ottawa at the time. This was back in the 80s. I was frantic.

Same! I could never understand why I was so drawn to Rhoda’s whole aesthetic, I wasn’t even alive in this era. It might be that Rhoda was aspirational for me. She represented all of my neuroticism and complex maternal psyche, but with the confidence to own it.
      Also, her wardrobe was goals.

Good episode! Ruth Gordon is always a hoot. I first experienced her when she was the nosy neighbor/coven member in the movie "Rosemary's Baby". I also loved her in "Harold and Maude". This show is one of my faves from the 70s, along with "The MTM Show", "The Bob Newhart Show" (not to be confused with "Newhart"), "WKRP in Cincinnati", "Taxi". The only thing that really dates these sitcoms is the lack of electronic gadgetry and, in some cases, the clothes..

"Kiss Your Epaulets Goodbye" is the first episode of Season 2 of "Rhoda", and thus the season premiere. Written by Michael Leeson, and directed by Robert Moore. First aired on CBS on September 8, 1975. Starting with this episode, "Rhoda" introduced a new opening sequence, which consisted of clips from Season 1 episodes, intercut with Rhoda in many different activities around New York.

11:08 for a split second Valerie looked right at the camera. Also, I love these old 70s sitcoms because they remind me of the homes of my family and my friends’ families when I was a very young kid. The furnishings and styles. But why does Brenda seem to have two pieces of furniture in her apartment neither of which look exactly like a bed or a sofa? (I get the whole small NYC studio apartment thing, but I can’t figure her place out.)

Carlton is a regular cast member so of course I knew he wouldn't stay fired. But I still don't like that he got his job back. Not only did he let strangers with no i.d. into Rhoda's apt without permission but he wasn't even genuinely sorry about it! And I didn't like that Brenda didn't back up Rhoda's complaint to management by saying that Carlton also let Lenny into HER apt that same night when she was out too. Carlton had a dangerous pattern of doing that & hence putting them and other tenants at risk.

This very thing happened in a building I managed. The Desk Clerk (+doorman) was fired immediately and stayed fired. The tenant sued the building and recouped her loss from the building's insurance (her homeowners subrogated). The entire affair was not a bit funny.

Thanks for a better quality too. I just finished watching season one over the weekend. I always had assumed that only luxury apartments in high rise buildings had their own security and a doorman in the city of New York. Rhoda lives in the Bronx area.
The studio audience laughter is annoying sometimes. They must select certain types of people who laugh out loud at anything. This was taped in LA studios so I assume only local Californians were admitted.

CaptainGrimsdale I hesitate to disagree with you, but Rhoda's and Brenda's parents live in the Bronx. Ida is always complaining about schlepping all the way from the Bronx to visit her daughters and in Episode 3, "Ida's Doctor", when Brenda challenges being referred to as a child, Ida explains that a child is a 22-year-old girl who is not married, lives in Manhattan and works in a bank. I've spent a fair amount of time in NYC and it is indeed a schlep from Manhattan to the Bronx (Yankee Stadium). I it's also a schlep to travel to Queens which is across the East River and just above Brooklyn. There are lots of residential neighborhoods on Manhattan Island such as Chelsea, Soho, Greenwich Village, Gramercy Park, etc., and they're great places to spend hours walking and patronizing cafes and shops. The iconic Victorian era brownstone homes alone are worth a visit. The boroughs of the Bronx (beaten up but not bowed), Queens and good old Brooklyn have charms of their own. No place in the world quite like NYC. One of my favorite places among many.

Melanie Hamilton I am not familiar with the New York area or where the Bronx area is located. I grew up in Sydney Australia and I had assumed the Bronx was part of Manhattan. I never knew how large New York is compared to other major cities around the world.

CaptainGrimsdale I appreciate what you've said. No reason you should have any idea how the 5 boroughs of NYC fit together to form the city. My first trip was with my parents when I was 8 yrs old to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among other places. I didn't return until I was 19 when I visited a sorority sister who lived on Long Island. It's been my good fortune to have had many friends who attended various colleges in NYC and several who have lived there over the years so I've visited many, many times. It's much easier to enjoy the city with folks who know their way around. It can be daunting otherwise, but not at all impossible. Even though I'm from the South and my regional accent gives me away, I've found New Yorkers to be very friendly and welcoming. The energy and the ethnic diversity of NYC are absolutely amazing. Perhaps someday you'll see for yourself. I would absolutely love to see Australia. My stepmom spent 3 lovely weeks there not too long ago. She enjoyed herself immensely.

They actually did have a B plot with some continuity for Brenda’s polyamorous lifestyle which I had never before defined as such. Clearly, such concepts were far above my theory of mind as when I first watched the series. It just seemed bizarre to me, but I’m going to rewatch with this in mind. Polyamory in the 70s, very avant- guard.
