If you want to make your autorotation practice a lot more like real-life training... (turning off your magnetos is not an option in training), you put your throttle to idle (usually the instructor does this with or without warning) and wait for the low-rotor rpm alarm/light to sound/light up before bottoming the collective. Once at idle, the governor will be outside its operational range and so won't mess with the throttle during the descent (you can also turn it off manually before beginning the manoeuvre). The low rotor rpm alarm will be one of your main cues in a real emergency (apart from no engine sound which you may or may not hear depending on conditions). In the descent you will also need to manage your rotor rpm with positive collective to avoid rotor overspeed which can kill you too. Correctly dosing the collective also serves to help control your rate of descent which is another important aspect of autorotations. This can be practiced by beginning your autorotation at a higher altitude. At the end of the flare, aim to finish 1-2 metres above the ground before bringing the throttle back in and reestablishing a powered hover. One of the most important aspects of this training is to develop the reflex of lowering collective as quickly as possible on hearing that alarm, especially on low-inertia rotors like Robbies. The Cabri has much more inertia in its rotor and so is inherently safer but you're still going to need quick reflexes. Wait too long... and you're toast. 🙂
yeaaaa no one likes hitting the low RPM critical speed.... just not going to have a good time. 80%+1% per 1000ft of DA....Always fun flying high DA days at 2000AGL. Where I'm at we had some 9000 DA days with field elevation of 5600 Robbies are fun and scary all at the same time.
As a real life heli pilot I was really excited about Heli's coming into the sim! Overall I really enjoy them but I think auto rotations still definitely need some work. In real life you would flare the aircraft at about 50ft in order to bleed off the airspeed and then only pull collective at last minute in order to soften the touch down. If you were to pull collective during the flare then you would lose your stored inertia (especially in the R22/44 and Cabri G2) and therefore would still hit the ground at some serious pace, bad back for life is what one of my ex instructors used to say! 😂😂. From my experience of doing auto's in the sim, it appears that the flare without pulling collective actually does nothing and you just continue to hit the ground, even with the engine off if you pull maximum collective the G2 will actually start to climb for about 50ft, which would certainly not happen in real life! I think Asobo have done really well overall but I am hoping they fine tune these things at some point.
