When you speak of mistakes people make it is as if your are personally speaking to me. Your pointers are spot on and have helped me improve. By the way, your book is great as well.
I'm learning watercolor for the very first time. I have found your videos to be the MOST helpful out of so many I've watched. I've been practicing these leaves and they're not coming out quite right. You said in the beginning NOT to curve ur stroke. But, for the 2and stoke, the bottom stroke, we DO curve slightly?? Thank You so much. I was so lost on everything until I found you and your wonderful videos. I enjoyed you love art school one SOO much I've been practicing these dang on leaves for days lol. I just couldnt thank you enough or explain how much you have already helped me. 💕💕
Hey Crystal! So a compound stroke should do the “curve” for you. When you apply pressure to a round brush it’ll get fat, and as you get closer to the tip of the leaf, you’ll gradually release that pressure so the width of the leaf tapers to a fine point. This will naturally give the leaf a curve without you having to curve your brush! Also, just wanted to let you know, I have a new leaf tutorial coming out Friday (good timing for all if you leaf practice). I show how to paint ten different, easy leaves. Definitely don’t miss it! Happy painting! ❤️
@@JennaRaineyChannel Ok thank you. I got a little confused with the bottom stroke. . . I'm so excited for Friday now!!!!! Yay! I'm so glad I found you 💕 Thank You
Hello Jenna. I love the way you teach. You are meticulous and you describe the process in detail and so clearly. Best of all, you even preempt the common mistakes. Love your video. Thanks
Third video... You are the first one I watch who explaines step by step how to paint leaves, not only demonstrate it... today is too late, but tomorrow I will start to exercise... Thank's a lot! :-)
Love this..just started with watercolour and been randomly dabbing paint to see what happens, which is fun but Your book “everyday watercolour” is giving me direction and purpose and these videos are the icing on the cake!, Thank you for sharing..
Thanks for sharing and letting me know about your process! I'm glad my book and videos are a help in your watercolor journey! Keep it up and happy painting! xoxo
Jenna Rainey you are most welcome. In my second career I was a chemistry professor and I recognize a great teacher when I see one. Your teaching style is excellent . I look forward to learning good art technique from you.
Thank you so much for this tutorial and for the patience with which you repeated so many times how exactly to hold a brush and apply the pressure. Just as you said, once I got to my paper, I was about to do it in a different way so... thank you for knowing exactly where we, as beginners, would go wrong and for trying to help us! The exercise seems straightforward and simple but it does make such a difference! I love my new leaves! 🙏🏻
Where have you been all this time. I am so glad to find your sites. Just a beginner with the handicap that I'm and 80 years old beginner. Thanks for your refreshing, informative, and relaxing way. I don't find many tutorials in real time. Most of them are 15 seconds to maybe a minute...too fast to keep up.I'll try to find your book. Keep up the good work. You are just too cute and nice and original and relaxing and knowledgeable. Thanks. Diane.
Hi Diane! I am so glad you found my channel as well and that you're loving the videos! I really appreciate all the love and support, I hope you continue enjoying the videos and your painting! xoxo
Thank you for this. I have your 30 day book but was having problems with having a blob of paint at the tip of every leaf. It occurred to me to see if you might be on UA-cam, and here you are!
I'm really enjoying your videos. Not only they are super good and detailed tutorials, they are also so funny. I love how OCD you are about it, like you literally breathe better after doing the correct version of whatever you are making :)
Haha, well I am so glad you are enjoying the videos! I definitely try and have some fun myself and make sure these videos are fun for my viewers as well! Thanks for watching and your feedback! xoxo
A long time ago, I read an instruction book about Chinese painting. The author said that master painters can spend years practicing bamboo leaves to learn how to do them perfectly. In the true chinese tradition, painting is as much a spiritual/meditative practice as much as an artistic process. The mental image and mental relaxation (that alpha state that your brain goes into when really 'in the zone') and hand and brush and paint are all one. Over and over and over again, every day, filling up pages and pages with these leaves. You're only considered a master at them after doing them literally hundreds of times.
Thank you for the great tips and letting me know what I was doing wrong after you mentioned that I paid closer attention to that and TRIED to avoid it. This video is so detailed in the hand position and brush. It is very helpful to know what angle the brush should be at the beginning and end. I loved your 4 part lesson.
OMG...such precise tuition WONDERFUL. Thankyou. Thankyou. Thankyou. I am a complete beginner in painting fullstop...after spending an afternoon doing what you teach I think I see improvements. So wish I could send you a photo of my progress and mistakes?!!!! I do find doing the leaf tip tricky.
I'm so glad you're enjoying, Rebecca! Have so much fun learning and growing as an artist. If you're on instagram, make sure to post and tag me so I can try and find it!!
@@JennaRaineyChannel I'm not on Instagram just yet...will certainly tag you when I am. Thanks sooo much for your support. I've also just bought w&n small tubes x 12 colours and done a swatch!
Thanks for splitting these into lil nuggets of videos. That way I can squeeze the tutorial in when I have a minute!!! Love these 😍 And ps my leaves need a lot of work! I’ve ordered the Princeton brushes from overseas as my current brushes don’t have that snap like yours. I think that’s the key
Great tutorial on the leaves. Any tips for a left hander?? I know I feel I have issues but it could just be me and lack of experience. Any tips would help. Thanks for all you do to teach.
Follow the same steps and techniques, just need to rotate the paper to whatever is comfortable for you so you're not smearing the paint. Can be a little tricky, but YOU got this!
Thanks so much for watching and supporting! Let me know if there's anything specific you want me to teach or paint, and I'll do my best to get as many videos done as I can!
I have a #6 Princeton Neptune that am using for the stems and leaves, so far. What is the difference between that and the one you use Princeton 4050 #6
Hi Jenna - I am really enjoying your videos and find them to be really awesome! I am also reading your book "Everyday Watercolor" - well done. I am brand new to becoming a watercolourist. Is there a recommended order to your videos that will guide me through the process? If so where can I find this list? In advance thank you so much for all of your help thus far. - Scott
Good gosh painting leaves are difficult. I’m going to practice the stems and leaves for a little while before moving on. My leaves are super oblong. Do you have any suggestions to fix that?
I'm a newbie to watercolor. I tried your technique and I succeed a few times but this will take me a lot of practice. I did the straight line and I applied pressure on the brush then slowly lifted and my leaf had parts missing on the leaf and I loaded my brush? I don't understand what problem is? Then I used a different brush a 12 and it worked just fine? It might be the brush but it's brand new? I was using a 6 like you used. I don't know but thanks for the tutorial. I will be practicing. 😊
You'll get it, Jane, just keep up that practice! It took me a long time to get it just right. Try a variety of different levels of paint on your brush and mess with how much water you add... you'll find that right combo that gives you what you need for those leaves. It does take practice tho, so keep it up! You'll be painting leaves in no time! Happy painting!!
