As you have mentioned.. shapes and patterns that keep the eyes moving, odd numbers of things rather than even. Developing a “feel” for what looks right
Thank you Jenna!!, truly a marvelous tut. I would love to see more of you loose floral arrangement such as this one. I have finally gotten all of my suggested materials, painting lots of leaves, trees and my family thinks I am a natural!!, lol. So enjoy watching anything of yours and some others…no one compares to you.
Wow! Not only your art is beautiful but your generosity on explaining composition and your thought process is what makes the difference in your videos. Thank you!!!
It is so helpful to see how an artist actually uses their palette. So many tutorials the camera is just focussed on the page, you're lucky to have so many angles! Love it! I've been thinking I've been mixing wrong/am lazy because I never clean my palette and seeing you make that purple on top of the green was great! I struggle with composition so this is awesome thanks :)
Thank you for sharing your expertise Jenna. I found this video really helpful. Im still very much a novice and I struggle with composition and how to fill in the gaps. Your approach has really inspired me. Thank you again.
I watched this again today. Great lesson in composition with such pretty colors and not too fast to follow along, especially if I slow the speed down a bit 😊
I'm so happy you loved the video, Robin! And I'm so happy to hear you diving into your new art passions! I hope that my tutorials will help you in your journey of watercolor. I have a video coming out THIS upcoming Saturday that I think will be a huge help for you -- 10 tips on instantly improving your watercolor. Stay tuned!
Hi Jenna, I am revisiting this tutorial from Jan, 2020. It is so valuable. Can you replicate it again someday in slower motion. It's such a quality lesson, but the speed within is so quick. I would say this is one of your best lessons,
You're so welcome, Linda! And yes! Have fun, get loosey-goosey with it, maybe try some things out of your comfort zone -- and even if it's a disaster, hey! It's still fun and you can learn unexpected things. :) Take care!
Wonderful! I really enjoy your watercolour process videos. I am learning a lot, and also find it extremely relaxing and inspiring watching a painting evolve. Thank you.
Sooo cool! When I wasn't dozing...because its so relaxing watching, I learned a lot. Particularly about home to compose a floral piece like this. You make it look so effortless. (Sign of a Pro)
Ssoo BEAUTIFUL!! Ssoo Inspiring!! Your painting and tutorials make me want to paint. It's just so effortless and magical. I love watching you! Thanks for another great video!!
This was a great tutorial Jenna! Two things I noticed in my own version: #1. I put the first flowers close to each other so there wasn't much room to add more colors in between. I think it's just because I didn't know what to expect but if I had watched one time through first I could have left room there. #2. When I start the brush in the center and go out my point is at the outside and not the inside. I keep trying to start the point on the inside and round off the outside of the petal but it doesn't come natural. If I start at the outside I can do a better job but the center isn't as clean. I know it just takes more practice. I just started back after a few month break so I'm not too worried, just thought I would share. Thanks for your videos!!
Thanks for sharing, Cory, I appreciate you letting me in to your watercolor journey. I am glad this video has helped you with composing your pieces, and yes, you are right, practice practice! Just enjoy those moments, enjoy the process!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I struggle with composition and you have helped me so much! Zig zag!! Who knew?! I love your teaching style. You are very informative, but relatable. Thanks again!
I love your work and teaching method. Also, your videos are very well done. I have learned quite a lot watching your videos. And I think you're very funny.
I’ve been reading your book and these videos are SO helpful. I really tune in to learning different compositions and why, I hope you do more on this topic. Great teacher, thank you so much.
Wow great work! I dont draw or paint floral often but the zig zag thing makes a lot of sense. I don’t do water color but maybe will try some day, that wet on wet thing looks fun. I am a guy but really think your work is fantastic👍 When I step up my painting game I’m def gonna check out more of your videos. Thanks so much
First of all your art is FANTASTIC and the simplicity and vibrancy create such appeal💜 but I came in when you were talking to the camera and the first thing I noticed was how awesome your skin looks so I wanted to add that, as well.
You are really a master at loose florals. You make it look absolutely effortless. I keep trying to get this look but haven’t gotten anywhere close. I’ve only been working with watercolor for 4-5 months
Selfless Artist i know so far😭😭❤ would love to see a realistic floral painting from you.. the basic steps.. 😍😍 and john u are the best videographer jenna could ever have 🤭😜❤
Aw, Chiranthika, thank you for your kindness! You've always been such a support, thank you so much! Realistic florals - yes! We'd love to do one of those soon!
Most informative and helpful, thank you so much, Jenna. It has also made me aware of my tendency to stop too soon. Maybe. But I have the fear of overworking a piece.
Been painting for three months and have had 2 people "comission" me for different things but I am still SO new that I struggle with the composition of the peice and I'm getting annoyed when my florals I use as a reference don't echo as well as I had hope for in my paintings but I am going to keep learning bc those moments where the strokes magically make sense are magic.
I love painting these big, loose florals with you! I wonder if you could create a tutorial like this one, only with marigolds and blue lily of the nile or hyacinth?
You call it rule of 3 - I've always called it 'odd numbers' - never two, but 1, 3, 5, ect is fine. But I never knew why. The viewer looking for pairs, I never knew that, so thanks! (on rewatching, I see you do say 'odd numbers are good' :) ) Using color to draw the eye where you want it, that's a nifty trick I hadn't thought of, so again, thank you!
Finally!!! :D I loved the video and it's content. It was surely worth the wait :D Tips about placement were really awesome. My favorite part was definitely the movement of brush on paper and colors bursting in wow technique. I like how the three flowers were looking together as a piece of art. Surely a must watch video for anyone who wants to move forward in the field of art. Looking forward to the next video. Keep up the awesome work Jenna and John :D
Hello Jenna! Thank you so much for this new awesome video! I'd also like to highlight that your video style is my favorite ever, the light is perfect, the cameras are at a perfect distance to clearly show how you work with your brush, colors and shapes, these, added to your great explanations, make your videos the BEST of the BEST! (and music/soundtracks are always perfect too!). This big THANK YOU is to you and your husband for all your efforts and great results!
you have lots of info, not alot of u tubers dont explain i love it!.im currently trying to learn cherry blossoms..cuppy look?? idk im a begginer and the instuctions i have I cant seem to grasp..practice practice Is what they say.🌺🌼
Hi Maria! I just started this channel less than a year ago, so I think that may explain why I don't have as many subscribers as you expected. But thank you for watching and supporting. Practice, practice! Yes! Enjoy the painting process! Take care!!
Hey there no I didn't mean anything in mean spirit.. maybe I didn't explain myself right I was just saying a lot of people that I watch on UA-cam other artists don't give the explanation of things let's say how to draw a star flower but you do and that's good for me as a beginner a lot of them just do what they do with no instruction so it's like almost copying their work I don't want to copy anyone's work I want to have my own style, lol that's if I get there 😊
Oh your comment wasn’t taken negatively at all!! Don’t worry! 🤗 I just appreciate you taking the time to watch my videos and comment and enjoy! Take care and have a lovely week, Maria! ❤️
Absolutely beautiful ! Do you do tutorials on roses? I would love to some roses in different colors. Thank you so much for your videos, I enjoy watching them.
Very pretty! I love your videos! As someone commented below I'd like to see semi realistic florals. This was interesting as I didn't realize when you license a design that the purchaser had any say in color or format for design. I thought they simply bought your work. That's how much I know!! :)
Ya know, I am wanting to do some realistic florals soon too! They take A LOT longer (of course, because of all the detail), and it can be tricky filming during baby naps and with all the other work I have to get done, etc... BUT, we'll try and film one soon!!
@@JennaRaineyChannel That would be great! I've been trying to learn more botanical painting but my natural style seems to be somewhere in between. Too much detail in full realistic botanicals. I can't imagine how you do so much with that little guy to care for but I appreciate what you for us would-be artists. And Myles is so so cute!
Hi Jenna. I did buy your watercolor book the other day. It's great!! Ok, so I am having a bit of a problem with pastel colors. If you buy a pastel watercolor in a tube it is opaque because they add white to it. If you take like a cad. red and water it down it is not really a pastel its a water colored down cad. red. Could you do a video on how to achieve pastel colors in watercolor while still remaining translucent. Thank you!!!
I'd love to find the same (or similar) set you use - that has the paints then the mixing trays adjacent. Is this something that is common and readily available? Or special order? Obviously I'm a newbie but REALLY enjoying learning watercolor. Any help with where to find something like what you use would be greatly appreciated!! (so happy I found your channel : ) )

Hi! I love your tutorials (and your brand of humor)! You mention using the Winsor & Newton professional grade paint, but I'm curious about the "cotman" version of that brand. Have you tried that? How does it compare other than being less expensive? Thanks for doing what you do!
Hey Becky! I do prefer professional because of the saturation, color mixing, and lifting. I know it’s more expensive, but it’s worth it in my opinion. I’d try them both and see what you love personally!
This tutorial was tremendously helpful! Not to mention how quickly you made such an absolutely beautiful piece of art! Oh how I wish I was that skilled! You make it look so easy!!! I am an extreme beginner! I'm a new subbie! I'm hooked! I will be soaking up....pun intended.....as much watercolor instructions as you will give me. I totally connected with the way you teach! Hand lettering is another I'm trying to learn. They go so beautifully together. I have so many visions in my head! All I need is my hand to behave and do as the brain sees. Lol...where can I get my painty little paws on a Pantone card set? I'd really like to have one for so many things. Making jewelry is my experienced art. Ok...I'll quit chatting away here...just very excited to find you. Now I want to look for your books! A must have in my library! Thank you so much!
Amanda! Hi! Welcome to my channel. I absolutely LOVE your enthusiasm and just excitement to get into watercolor. Just keep up that practice, enjoy the process, and you're hands will begin to "behave" more and more! Lol. The Pantone Formula Guide can be found here( amzn.to/2VWHc9Y ), and just so you know, I link every supply I use in every video, so if you ever need paint, paper, brushes, anything -- if you want to see what I use, you can check out the description for all of those! I made it as easy as possible for you and linked them all there... Thank you for your excitement, for your love and support! I appreciate it! xoxo
OMGOODNESS! I don’t know what I expected, but you are just adorable... truly beautiful. I hadn’t seen your face at all until this video is why I was surprised. I just knew you have a nice voice and pretty hands. And, you’re also a great teacher. Well, now that I’ve sucked up to the teacher enough, I’ll get back to the video and shut up 🤐 😥😒😅. Well, you see, I’m a professional photographer, so I see a lot of faces and study faces. I know photogenic people, usually, when I see them, and I can see that you are photogenic. That doesn’t always make one beautiful, but in your case , you are. Also, just bc one is beautiful does not mean that one is photogenic. Anyway, that’s why I mentioned how pretty you are. My husband says I tell this to people too often , that I should mind my own business, but it’s something I would value knowing. 😂
I really enjoy this video and all of them really. Would love to see more videos on composition as it is a tricky part of painting. Also- is this video sped up? I find myself trying to go faster to keep up but things don’t turn out nice. Thank you!
I’m so glad you enjoyed the video, Alisha, and I appreciate your feedback. I’ll keep composition in mind for future videos. There were moments where this was sped up because it was a composition focused video and I wasn’t actually teaching much of the flowers, so we sped it up to get to the composition talk.... sometimes we’ll speed things up because if we don’t, some vids would be literally close to an hour - so sometimes we have to make that decision, although we prefer not to... hope that clears it up for ya. Thanks for watching and supporting!
My daughter is 13 and she watches you everyday. Thank you so much for making videos. She is very shy and she has really came out of her shell this year. I had one question my daughter wants me to buy these Winsor tube paints for her birthday. Is there a proper way to put them into the pans or should I not do that at all. Because that’s what she wants me to do,put the tube paints in the little squares. is that OK or am I going to ruin them thank you
Hey Vincent! I’m so happy to heat your daughter is enjoying the videos and getting into watercolor! All the exact paints I use, just FYI, are linked in the description. As far as putting them into the pans, there’s no special way to do it, but she could do it herself if she wanted. What I do when I am getting fresh paint out, is I will pour the pigment on my palette, and I like to let it dry, then activate it with water when I am ready to paint. That will usually make the paint last longer, instead of going straight for fresh, wet paint out of the tube. I hope that helps! Happy birthday to your 13 year old!!
Hi Jenna. I know this video is quite old, but I just came to this specific one via a very recent reference from Crystal Tan. I watch all your videos (thank you for sharing) and I'm just being a bit lazy, but I'm curious if you have any videos, specifically, re: the perspective of painting flowers i.e. the different views? That is a weak point for me. Also, I have an aversion to sketching and drawing...I WILL not do that. Can't help it. LOL Thanks.
Do the books change from year to year or is it pretty much standardized? Since the are fairly expensive is it something that a beginner would need? Sorry for all the question but I trust your opinion and information you put out in your videos. We don’t have art stores where I live so I have been watching hundreds of UA-cam video and getting more and more confused. So lucky you I have chose you to be my UA-cam go to person....🤣
Hey Patricia! The books stay as-is, I'm not making any edits or anything, if that's what you're wondering. My first Everyday Watercolor is PERFECT for beginners! And of course, if you are specifically interested in flowers, then my second will help you with loose style and realistic florals. If you decide to get one or both, I do hope you enjoy! ❤️
Hey Jane! It is literally a book FULL of different colors that are assigned numbers, so that designers and manufacturers and whoever else can be on the exact same page when it comes to coloring a particular piece. Colors on screen can vary depending on what screen you're looking at, so it's best to have a pantone book to know exactly what color you're going for... I hope that makes sense. Check it out here: Pantone Formula Guide: amzn.to/2VWHc9Y
I'm thinking maybe my brush is too small. My flowers dry out before I can utilize WOW so there are hard lines everywhere. By the time I'm putting in some stems, the petals are too dry to create that blooming effect even though I'm loading it with as much water as the brush can hold 🤷🏼♀️ Even so, it turned out great thank you for the tutorial!
Wow, beautiful paintings! Love the flowers . - You can also use 'The Golden Ratio' so you always makes beautiful paintings. That's the most used measure-teqnigue by the greatest artist in the world. But, I just don't think it'll go with the style you're doin' btw. Anyways, thank you from your new subber. 🙂
Thank you so much for sharing, Lene! Definitely different ways to go about putting together your pieces, I love the diversity with art. And welcome to the Jenna Rainey UA-cam fam! Thanks for the sub. Take care! xoxo
@@JennaRaineyChannel You're welcome. I'm sure somebody will take good use of this proportional divider. I think the ratio is something like 1:1,67.- And, luckely we're good to help eachother out when it comes to art, right? Happy painting. ❣️

Beautiful work! I am just starting in watercolor and you do inspire me to try it out. Thank you.
That's great, Sofia! I hope you LOVE watercolor, you should definitely get in to it! :)
Absolutely beautiful ! Do you do tutorials on roses? I would love to some roses in different colors. Thank you so much for your videos, I enjoy watching them.
Hey Carolyn! Thanks for the love. And YES, here is my rose tutorial: ua-cam.com/video/hVzqaT5xvPM/v-deo.html
Thanks Laurie for the support and feedback! I’ll try and add a video on pigments soon!
Just wow..:)
❤️ ❤️
Very nice!!
Thanks!

Jenna Rainey wow - thank you so very much!!!!!
How does the relate to color harmony...complimentary,analogous, etc?
Lovely and inspiring... Thank you for sharing :-)
Aw thank YOU Lynda!
Wonderful 👌💐
Thanks Kumar!!
I appreciate it! xoxo
Exquisite
❤️❤️
Aw Liz, you're too kind!! Thanks so much for the compliments, and all the love and support! I appreciate you!! ❤️❤️
SO helpful, Jenna, thank you! :O)
So glad! Thanks for watching!
Great video. it's beautiful. You have talent. I'm happy to see your video. Today was a good day. 😊🌸🌈🌸🌈
Thank you, Hagru! I am so happy that you had a great day and that this video was a part of that. Take care!
Thank you ! Maybe next one on how to digitalise,?
Yes! I'll try and get some design videos filmed soon!! :)
Happy birthday to your 13 year old!!
amazing..love the composition ..thanks a lot for creating it
Thanks for watching!
LOL Thanks.
Snapdragon tutorial for a not so typical flower
What are pantone colors?
By the time I'm putting in some stems, the petals are too dry to create that blooming effect even though I'm loading it with as much water as the brush can hold 🤷🏼♀️
Even so, it turned out great thank you for the tutorial!
Wow
❤️
Awesome tutorial
