- Jonathan 'jiffy' Davies made his Wales debut in the warm April sun in a game postponed from earlier in the season due to the severe 1984 -85 winter. Davies marked his debut with a try and a drop goal in a game which also saw Neath team mate Paul Thorburn, playing his first game at the national stadium, kick 2 conversions and 3 penalty goals.

Agreed, Tony. BN was a fantastic line out jumper and all round second row.
You see a fair few catches in the line these days, but yes Norster was an exceptional athlete. It was, together with Jiffy Davies their great misfortune to be at their peak at this time in Wales.

Amazing Ringer got sent off for a Finger tip, Orwin stays on for a blind punch in front of Everyone, Palmade was an Excellent referee.
In comparison to Dooley, Orwin was a pussycat. Dooley was a thug and anyone smaller than Dooley and with his back to him, was extremely vulnerable to a cowardly punch from behind. Palmade wasn't the worst referee. That penalty was probably 'reversed' in Palmade's head by Orwin's punch because Evan's 'careless' footwork would have been otherwise addressed. Ringer was simply the next one in that game to do something stupid, though the WRU's reaction by effectively exiling Ringer out of future teams was excessive.
Palmade the French referee always seemed to be the referee in the 1980s

Thanks for posting. A great game. Rugby as it should be refereed. And I write this a fortnight after the 2023 World Cup Final, All Blacks v The Springboks. What should have been a 'game of all games,' a festival of delight for rugby fans the world over, totally ruined by all the new refereeing rules. I don't think I'm exagerrating when I say that hardly a three minute period of free rugby flowed without the blast of the whistle or a visit to the TMO. Not the players fault, but what an awful game. Have the officials killed rugby? The comparison with this game from the 1980's suggests so.
Dirty English
Two truly dreadful rugby teams. It would take England another 3 years before they finally began to get their act together, and Wales another 10.
There are a few very decent players on both sides and some of the English would shine very brightly in years to come, but this was a non event.
