I was in Cardiff that day to watch the game.got pissed with my mate then got the bus back up to Pontypridd and got locked out of my house by my mrs for being drunk. great day
These were the Nadir Days of Welsh rugby, nothing could stop the remorseless advance of england. To say that as a Nation we were dispirited would be an understatement ... and then This Game! We all learnt that we still had worth, in built and in our genes. :-)
A great game (even for a neutral fan. I'm Irish). I used to have this match on video. England were going for a 3rd consecutive Grand Slam and were up against an un-fancied Welsh side. Wales had propped up the 5 Nations table in the last few seasons. Great individual battle between Rory Underwood and Ieuan Evans, 2 of the greatest wings of the era, or any era. They would be the wings for the Lions' team against New Zealand in that year's Lions series. Great to hear Bill McClaren on commentary, the greatest rugby commentator of all time. England were denied 2 tries. Wales would go on to win the Championship in 1994 while England would win another Grand Slam (3rd in 5 years) in 1995!
I was there as a young English man it was my first visit to The Arms Park with my Welsh Guard uncle Tim who had a pair of debentures and invited me as I was getting married that year. He was English but was as Welsh as you can be and savoured every minute, along with Max Boyce who was sat directly behind us alongside a very disappointed Ian Botham…. The train journey back to Newport was very painful 😣
England were unlucky to lose this game, but what a great counterattacking try from Ieuan Evans. But I agree with Eddie Butler that Dewi Morris' try should have been allowed ; a mistake from the referee.
England had declined a bit by this time. They fluked a win against France at Twickers, then lost this game to Wales...and lost badly to Ireland in Dublin. Sure they had a good win v Scotland.....but this was not a great championship by them. Still, they provided 7 of the Lions test pack v NZ that summer and 4 of the 7 test backs (Guscott, Andrew, Morris, and Underwood).
Maybe England were a bit unlucky on the day with the 'disallowed' Dewi Morris try and a blatant high tackle by Mike Rayer which you wouldn't have got away with even a few years later. England still the best team on paper, but even the great Welsh side of the 1970's had a dip in fortunes with couple of mediocre seasons (1973-74). They lost at Twickenham in '74 with JJ Williams claiming he had a perfectly good try disallowed, which probably would have won Wales the game.
hywel williams they hardly got hammered. Got robbed in the first test by a terrible ref decision giving NZ a penalty in the last minute. Losing by a point. Lions won the second test easily. Lost last test. Could and should have won 2-1.
She was happy. Unlike the rest of the Saxe-Coburg-Gotha lot (she was too good for) she had feelings for Wales, and William supports Wales. She also went to support Wales in France.

In this match Ieuan got the better of Rory. And he also crucially did v Campese for the Lions.
I was there. Missed the try. Went for a pee just before half time and heard the cheers.

I came here for 1:15:30 🙂 Tarw taking the mark on his own line and booting it out close to halfway.

Both full backs excellent. England's backs were cluless. Fine refeeeing, but?
Ricky Evans v Jeff Probyn.
Look at that English side...how in the hell did Wales do that? Ha. Merlin lives.

A 3 on 1 overlap at 13.33 ignored by Scott Gibbs!
