HAIRSPRAY alumni from numerous productions, along with other professional theater, film and television performers come together for a joyous celebration of song and dance in You Can’t Stop The Beat!
The creative team includes David O (co-conceiver, co-director, musical director), Janet Roston (co-conceiver, co-director, choreographer), Marc Shaiman (music and lyrics), Scott Wittman (lyrics), Ally Rice (video editor), Michael Donovan (casting) and Scott M. Riesett (music mixer). The video is produced by Christopher Sepulveda with associate producers Rebecca Eisenberg and Daniel Henning.

Obviously, it's spectacular musically. But I cannot even imagine the effort involved in editing this together. Dozens and dozens of clips to keep track of, arrange on-screen, sync... It's just mind-blowing.

This was actually really good. With everything moving pretty quickly and many people on-screen at once several times, it made it hard to see everyone, but I still enjoyed it. I noticed some faces from the 1988 and 2007 movies and a couple from the live TV version from a few years ago, but there were three in particular that I didn't or couldn't see close up so I don't know if they were included. John Travolta and Zac Efron(2007 movie)and Dove Cameron(live TV production). Can anyone tell if they were involved in this video?

It's pretty impressive that he took this really quirky movie, turned it into a Broadway hit, then turned THAT version of it back into a movie! I know there's plans to turn the musical version of Mean Girls into a movie, but other examples of this escape me right now.

@@jroston1 The more I watch it, the more it reminds of one of those old Busby Berkeley musicals seen from way up above. I love the patterns of dancing, bed kicks, kitchen dance, etc. That's a good thing -- taking choreography to a new level.
@@jroston1 So far there are a million views (I think I put in about 50,000) and while everyone is in top form, I find myself continually looking at the dancers' squares--the mattress dancing (I see what you did there), the kitchen utensil props, the attention paid to camera angles, the joy emanating from the dancers making the most of their small spaces. Makes me so happy. Thank you!!

Geeze, I remember this in our generation's darkest times and I am watching this again with a new perspective on how much happiness this brought so many people who just needed a little bit of a smile... that's what performers do, even though the arts were struggling the most. It's a happy song but I still get emotional about this one.

This song just gets it right. If I wanted to show somebody why I love musical theater and I have only one song to do it, this is the one I would pick.
Just when you thought you couldn't find a better version of this song. This is what I needed today, deadlines and corona isolation getting to me, but this song always lifts me up. And this combination of people, the household choreo, the sign language bit, the inclusivith and happiness of it all. This is just pure bliss and exactly what I needed.

I love that Ricki Lake didn't play Tracy in a musical version of Hairspray and yet she's constantly included in these sorts of things. Makes me wish Divine were still around so she could've also enjoyed the perks of her 'Hairspray' association (imagine her in this video sharing the screen with Harvey Fierstein!).

@@reginab9802 I fear it will be a long time until I sit in a crowded auditorium and experience a musical again. This was amazing but I started crying halfway through because I realized all of these folks are out of work as well as all the set designers, lighting people, costumers, stage managers, directors, etc. How many will abandon entertainment to survive? Who will be left to be on stage when this is all over? That said, I LOVED every second of this! Thank you to everyone that was involved.

This was such a great idea.
Marc Shaiman is a genius. The way that the musical built on John Waters' film was so creative and smart. The movie version of that stage musical is one of the best such adaptations ever done. And, this cleverly produced UA-cam video bringing the performers from the various stage productions together with Ricki Lake just expands on that wonderful legacy further.
Everyone involved deserves congratulations.

I watch this when I'm feeling off. I saw the tour company in Philadelphia at The Academy of Music years ago and was floored. My husband, who I wanted so badly to see this show on stage, died last month and we never got to see it together. Tryng to keep the beat going in my sorrow.
