Quiet Desert Photography: Hiking California

- The desert in California, full of vast beauty, has enchanted me this past week! I had an incredible journey, from the desert floor to mountaintop hiking, astrophotography and gorgeous Palm Springs. This is day 1. And we saw and photographed more than I ever imagined I could in one day. This is definitely one of the most incredible photography locations in the world.

It's a pleasure to watch your videos.
Aw thank you very much!
I liked the black and white mountain range shot the best.
Thanks John!
Absolutely beautiful scenery! Very impressive! Great photography and the music accompanied it beautifully. Loved the black and white photo too.
Thanks Maureen!! It was so beautiful there!!
Stunning!
Thank you!!
That was so beautiful awesome images we liked the black and white mountains ...
Thanks Bob!!
Spent a fair amount of time in the desert outside Phoenix back in the 80's. The quietness and the night sky were amazing! And despite some seriously hot daytime weather, it did cool down nicely at night. Enjoyed your photos and hike and look forward to more from your desert trip!
Thanks Bob! It's so true... shade and nighttime were completely comfortable. I really quite enjoyed the weather we had.
Your photography is wonderful!
Oh thank you Judy!
Another great video Rachel, love those desert shots!
Thanks Dave!!
Beautiful Images !!
Thank you so much! 😊
wowwww, what a gorgeous place! The light was amazing!
So beautiful isn’t it?? I could spend so much time there!
Fun video Rachel! Nice job!!!
Thanks Garrick!!
Wow, from frozen waterfalls to a quiet still desert in a matter of weeks....trying to work out why they call that place Palm springs!! Nice!
A crazy change eh?? So amazing
This place reminds me a little of Valley of Fire state park (minus the palm trees). Like Palm Springs it's a dry heat there too, but hot as heck. The day I was there in late Sept it was 105 F. Could barely do much hiking and photo taking while I was there, but it was still fun to see.
Sounds like another place I need to visit! Yeah the heat is something else but I was amazed at how lovely the shade is without the humidity!
This place is so different to what I have ever known. Wonderful for photos out of the ordinary. You look as though you are loving it and I can see why. Great shots, with very interesting trees everywhere you look.
I bet this place makes you really appreciate Water ?
It does!! It kept striking me that water is a precious commodity and it’s easy to take it for granted. But what a stunning place.
Nice video and I like music in this video.
Thanks Peter!
Hey, don't forget to visit Death Valley! It's my favorite place on Earth for photography, camping and hiding from society. Been there at least 8 times and still can't get enough of it... :-)
It looks AMAZING. We missed it. Will have to go back!
Rachel, being a desert dweller well over half my life, I really enjoyed the photos. When you said you're going up the mountain, you may end up in Joshua tree NP. Now theres a place to photograph. A very unique landscape. At the highest point you can see Palm Springs, Salton Sea, and lots of Mojave desert. Make sure you stay hydrated, it gets hot. Loved the music! From the photo of your group, I'd say you found some Joshua Trees. Glad you had fun.
Hi Mark! It was great fun!! We went up the sky tram and hiked from there. Then went to Joshua Tree NP for astro. We did more too! Such a varied and beautiful place!
love the tumbleweed .... fab!!
😄 Thank you!! I loved all those tumbleweeds!
It's always a bit amazing to step into the 90* shade and catch a chill in landscapes like that.
Yes!! I noticed that. So true!
Beautiful and exotic vegetation surrounded by magnificent vistas. Great photos Rachel. 👍👏 I can’t wait for further videos from your trip.
Thanks Maria!!! It was so incredible there!
Lovely video Rachel 👍
With all the rain we're getting here in the UK I've forgotten what the sun looks like 🙈 🙂
Thanks Phil! Oh man really? We’ve had quite a bit in Canada too.
I live in the desert and I don’t know when you and Kara were in Palm Springs, But I noticed that it appeared that you two were not carrying enough water. The desert will kill you if you don’t have enough water. Love your photos and Kara collecting rocks. I pick up a rock from everyplace I visit, to include Europe and the United Kingdom and Canada. Great video. 👍👍📷
Thanks so much Paul! Yeah we probably could have used more water. We kept refilling the bottles before heading out but I could have used more for sure 👍
Picking up rocks is fun, yeah, but illegal in the parks and frowned upon in other areas. If everyone did this, I don't have to tell you what the result would be. When I was a little girl, there were thousands of beautiful shells on the beach. Now there are hardly any.
Amazing opening video to your new series, looking forward to the next instalments, looks stunning
Thanks Mark!! I wish the videos could come close to doing it justice. It was wonderful!
Good first day of your trip. Looks like you two had fun.
It was awesome Tom!
awesome job. cant wait for more!
Thanks Teresa!
Awesome Rachel and Kara! Love it!! Music, photo’s and silence 🙏
Thanks Ko!!
Hi Rachel,
Gorgeous location - stunning photography!! Love the choice of music. Looking forward to the next video. Well done as always. 😊👍
Thanks so much Barbara!!
Awesome video and beautiful photography work! I am looking forward to see your next episode of your California trip! :)
Thank you!! 😊😊😊
@@RachelLerch You are welcome!! 😊
Hi Rachel and Kara, Wow, two beautiful ladies and brilliant photo's all at the same time - we have it all... Seriously, great pix... I had a friend, who at one time, lived not too distant from Death Valley... Wow, the temperatures up there was hot, hot, hot.... Anyway, have a super great time the pair of you, don't do anything I wouldn't... Keep well watered... Take care, xx
Thanks Anthony!! 😊😊
Looking forward to see what you shoot in the desert.
Thank you!
So beautiful! Looks like we are in for a treat after watching this video.
Aw thanks Kelly!! 😊
So awesome, Rachel! I love how California has different 'worlds' all across the state, just like here in Texas, we have desert, mountains, plains, canyons, forests, beaches, etc., (only a couple of waterfalls though 😕) Loved getting a look at where you've been and your lovely photos too! We lived in California for a year and never went to Palm Springs, so I'm looking forward to seeing more 😃
Sounds like I need to visit Texas Liesl! I loved California. Each day was so different. Beautiful
Yes, you do! But the difference between scenery in California and Texas is that in TX you have to drive forever to get from one scenic site to another LOL At least in CA there are more of a concentration of interesting sites. So glad you had a great time!
I’d be willing to give it a go! 😄
A far cry from Canada, isn't it? You captured the soft desert palette nicely. Always bring more water than you think you'll need, the desert will dry you out in no time.
You aren’t kidding!! We needed so much water! Thanks Matt 😊
I aways enjoy the music that accompanies the video good job Rachel. Nice to be in a different location right? Cheers.
It is!! Thanks Gino!
Visited there in2015 took the cable car into the mountains. Would of liked to explore but didn't have the time. Saw a huge spider on the side of the road size of your hand
Oh no!! Hahaha! I’m glad I didn’t see one! I would’ve have liked more time to explore too... beautiful.
I live a short drive from there. Born and raised Californian.
That's awesome! Do you do photography out in the desert?
Not really. Never really thought of taking pictures there. Interesting to see it from your perspective. I guess I’ve always taken it for granted.
Cool! I get that... I think finding inspiration in a familiar place is the most challenging thing.
Rachel Lerch I’m sorry im not a photographer like u. I’m saving money to buy my first dslr. Because u and orthers are inspiren me to take more pictures. I just have my cell phone right now.
I do like ur channel. I just wanna get into the grove of this photography again.
Impressive post and pics, Rachel. Were sensory overload or finding compositions a problem? Late day lighting a plus. That nighttime street fest looked like an amazing collection of photo ops - food, colorful merchandise, performers, too.
Thanks Paul! Compositions were everywhere but being tired was an issue. Lol. The street fest would have been great for photo ops but after a full day of flying, then hiking, I wasn’t up for carrying more than my cell phone!
how are you enjoying the ronin-s? Not sure you made a video bout it yet (with your experiences)
No video yet due to my trip! But sadly I had to return it! Will explain soon 👍
So what part of this planet is not beautiful? From sparse to bountiful, the earth is the chief inspirer for our imagination. I'm loving your photography and videos as a new subscriber.
I agree whole-heartedly Steven!! 100%! Thank you :)
Who put put all those rocks along the road?
😄
You wouldn't want to be here in Palm Springs now. Well over 100 degrees, maybe above 110 degrees. Plus add the dry, and windy air makes for stay-inside-weather.
I saw the extreme heat warning as we were leaving! We just missed it!! Must be crazy hot!
I thought you got a drone there for a second =p
Haha!! I thought that too when I was looking at my footage! 😄
Your video quality Rachel is just fantastic! Looks great with landscapes. We've just started our own photography UA-cam channel and we just wanted to make connections with like-minded creatives. Not asking for you to check out all our videos but if you have a few minutes to check us out then we'll be so grateful Rachel. Have a great day :-) Looking forward to your next vid.
Cool! I will! Thanks!!
