  • Another bridge camera, but this time it's from "Minolta". Obviously the real original Minolta is long gone, but the company "elite brands" somehow acquired the name and has started releasing basic digital cameras. This company is the USA distributor of Samyang in the form of Rokinon, so they do have experience in this market at least. This camera is very similar in layout to the Nikon B500, but at full retail price is lower cost. You do lose out on some features though I wonder if it's worth getting the cheaper option in this case. With cameras like this expectations should be set low so you can be pleasantly surprised by all of the auto features and other fun modes like... GIF capture!
    You can pick up the Minolta MN35Z here:
    Amazon: amzn.to/2EqsAan
    Adorama: adorama.rfvk.n...
    B&H: bhpho.to/3UvLM9X
    Keep in mind it seems impossible to get replacement batteries and proper support for this camera...
    Here is camera I think is a better starter alternative if you don't need a huge long range zoom lens like the Minolta has:

    By the way, this camera, or at least, my Praktica Luzmedia Z35, gave me a wonderful introduction to the world of photography. It does have its limitations but as long as you don't expect miracles from it, it's a perfectly good beginners camera imo.

      I agree. Most anything is a good start, even most smartphones these days. It really does depend on expectations. My first decent camera was a Canon 2-megapixel compact camera. I used that for quite a few years. Though now most phone cameras will top it quality wise, haha.

    The zoom is incredible.
    I've got a Samsung Galaxy Note 10 and when I take pictures of the moon, you can hardly see it. With the Minolta M35z, you can actually see the detail of the moons surface. I can take clear pictures of some across two football fields.
    That being said, stabilization is an issue and this camera doesn't take pictures rapidly, as some others do.
    I bought mine for $70 online and I'm happy overall. 😊

    • @ScottJWaldron
      @ScottJWaldron  4 роки тому +3

      That's a good price. Yeah, these all-in-one zoom cameras are always going to have an advantage with the big lens. The Samsung S20 Ultra phone has a "100x space zoom" but it's actually more like a 10x optical zoom with the rest being marketing, lol.

      "100x space zoom" lol. Yeah, I don't think a phone is capable of anything in high quality past 10x just yet.

    • @ScottJWaldron

      @chenzenzo You would have to go used and pretty old at that price. I have videos on the channel about a Canon 30D that I bought for around $50 on KEH. That's pretty fun to use.

    Not a bridge camera.. It really just wants you to use auto... only 2 apertures.. the reason that is has a billion shutter speeds.. while the overall picture quality is good, it just really let me down... focuses wanders a lot.. especially on video... and the mic is poor unless you are right next to the camera... get a pentax K1000 and learn photography the real way.....

    • @ScottJWaldron
      @ScottJWaldron  10 місяців тому

      I'd be surprised if this is still sold. Also, experimenting with film cameras is a decent idea for people that want to though I'd personally suggest a used DSLR or mirrorless camera. Film and developing is an ongoing expense that will be amortized pretty quickly if they go digital at a higher cost.
      I've made various videos suggesting that people avoid these types of cameras with long optical zoom lenses and small sensors, but marketing from camera companies was so strong back in the early 2000s that people still think they are worthwhile. Generally I'd suggest to anyone starting out to use their phone (some 1st party and 3rd party camera apps offer quite a bit of control and RAW image formats) for as long as they can unless they really need long optical zoom. Otherwise these cameras don't serve much benefit.
      Yeah, for this specific camera calling it something like a "super zoom" might be a better term than a "bridge camera".

    • @ScottJWaldron
      @ScottJWaldron  4 роки тому +1

      $350 is very limited in cameras. At the moment the Canon EOS M6 with a lens is $350 on B&H. That camera is vastly superior to the Minolta. Who knows how long that deal will last. bhpho.to/39bsXlp

    • @ScottJWaldron
      @ScottJWaldron  4 роки тому +1

      Yeah, the M6 should be a great camera for what you are trying to do. It can grow with you as your skills to do video improve. It has a microphone input port, so you can eventually buy an external mic if you want to really get crisp audio compared to in-camera audio (pro tip is to get microphones as close to you as possible without it showing up in the video). Lighting is also very important. Anyways, the M6 would be a great start due to quality autofocus in video and a lot of control. It also has a very large sensor inside compared to that Minolta.

      I had searched on the internet about it for this video, but I didn't find any specifics. Konica/Minolta sold off all of the camera technology side to Sony according to the wikipedia page. It looks like they still exist and are selling printers as well as business services. They probably sold "Minolta", or doing a long term license of the name. Kind of interesting how it all works on the business side.

    • @ScottJWaldron
      @ScottJWaldron  5 років тому +2

      The lens on this camera doesn't come off. This camera is an all-in-one device. You can only use it as it is without anything else besides a memory card and battery. The reason you are seeing Sony lenses is because Sony bought the "Konica Minolta" company many years ago. Sony used Konica/Minolta technology in Sony's "A-mount DSLR" cameras that had interchangeable lenses. This "Minolta" camera has nothing to do with the old company. They bought the name.

      The Nikon Coolpix cameras would be the same as this one. The lenses on those cameras don't come off. If you want a camera that can change lenses look for an "interchangeable lens camera". The cameras I use for these videos are good for beginners. They are called the Canon EOS M100 and Canon EOS M50.

      Was it always like that? if not then look for something in the menu to reset the camera. It's an old cheap small sensor camera so the fuzzy look could be normal if you are comparing it to a recent smartphone.

      Have you tried contacting Minolta directly? www.minoltadigital.com/contact
      The problem with these companies like "Minolta" that went bankrupt or bought out is that a 3rd party basically just uses the name and tends to provide minimal support (you can see on that webpage that the actual company is "Elite Brands"). So hopefully they will respond. My local shop sells the cameras so I'm asking someone if replacement batteries are even available.

      The response I got from the camera shop is that it was a popular battery many years back and used by multiple companies, but it's harder to find now. I looked on Amazon and the batteries labeled "NP-120" appear to look the same as the one in my video, but like you were saying whatever you bought from there didn't fit. Well I had the same issue. If you look at the Kastar replacement battery there is a little indentation in the center. I used my bench grinder and ground that down flat. Now it may be paper thin, and it still doesn’t latch, but this allows me to push slightly down and latch the door and use these batteries. Don’t get carried away doing this cause you can ruin the battery. I did a little on the top too but I don’t recommend that. I went a little deep but it doesn’t seem to have a negative effect. We’ll see.

      Mary, all I can do here is point you to things in the manual. I used this camera for like an hour back in 2018. If you don't have the manual you can download an electronic version from their website: www.minoltadigital.com/manuals-software
      Pare 31 and 32 describe in detail how to delete images and videos from the camera.
      Page 65 talks about images that are "protected". It's possible you locked them all on accident.
      If you keep having problems you can take the SD card out of the camera and connect it to a computer. The best way is with a SD card reader you can purchase at places like Best Buy or Office Max. You probably can connect the camera directly to the PC through a USB cable to access the files without a dedicated SD card reader, but if you are having problems with deleting files then you might have problems connecting the camera to a PC like that. Either way you can use the computer to manage pictures on the SD card instead of trying to do it in the camera.

    Is this camera good to zoom in on moon or stars with 35X zoom? If it is what is best setting to do so? I appreciate it...!!

    • @ScottJWaldron
      @ScottJWaldron  4 роки тому

      That's not something I tried, sorry. This camera can do full manual control so I'd suggest using that. The Moon is surprisingly bright and it moves pretty quickly through the sky. Stars are very dark and doing wide angle is usually the best place to start with those. You will need to experiment and learn on your own. Minolta had the camera's manual on their site (toward the bottom of the page): www.minoltadigital.com/camerasall/minolta-mn35z-20mp-35x-optical-zoom-wi-fi-bridge-camera

      A great camera for moon photography is the Nikon Coolpix P900. The zoom on that camera is impressive. I’ve taken moon photos right from my backyard with that camera. I recommend getting a tripod for it though (I use a manfrotto) because the camera does get top heavy when fully zoomed out.

    • @ScottJWaldron
      @ScottJWaldron  5 років тому

      All of these cameras have a sensor that's 1/2.3" in size, which is basically comparable to what smart phones have these days. Image quality goes up based on sensor size: first with these 1/2.3" >> 1" sensors >> micro 4/3 >> APS-C >> full-frame. The main benefit of a camera like this over a phone is being able to have a large zoom lens on it for a cheap price (phones will never be able to fit the big pieces of glass required to make that happen). I haven't used those other cameras besides the WX220 that I have a video like this on. For cameras like this I tend to recommend Sony in general. I think they have a bit better handle on these entry level models. Personally? I'd go with one that can fit in a pocket unless I needed a huge zoom lens range (eg. the Sony WX220 or HX80). Though if I didn't care too much about being able to fit it in a pocket, and didn't need a cheap way to get a lot of zoom... I'd save up more cash and get a Canon EOS M100 (APS-C sensor). I get a lot of questions like this because I do make videos on entry level cameras. Overall, I find them difficult to recommend unless the user specifically needs a lot of optical zoom range in a low price, outside of that I say get a good phone or jump up to larger sensor cameras.

    can you manually focus?

    • @ScottJWaldron
      @ScottJWaldron  4 роки тому

      Hi Amy, on page 30 of the manual it talks about focus modes. I'm seeing AF, macro, super macro, and infinity mode. So no actual manual focus, but you can use the AE/AF lock to stop the camera from focusing once it has already. There are more details on how it works in the manual. You can download the manual in PDF format here (link toward the bottom of the page): www.minoltadigital.com/camerasall/minolta-mn35z-20mp-35x-optical-zoom-wi-fi-bridge-camera

    Scott....thank you so much for your honesty...in your review of the Minolta M35Z.... new to the digital camera world...old school Nikon F1 purchased new as serviceman Vietnam. However discussing the Minolta M35Z as slightly better than a cellular phone. My Motorola phone appears to take better videos than the demo..as you movied the camera M35z around in video mode..it appears out of focus and gittery. Looked very bad. Short clip showing the view through the display screen. Later at end of your demo supposedly video mode but not looking through the display screen...panning out store window was clear and stable.
    Which is the true account of the video mode. Short video clip through the display screen was terrible. And what about night time photography my phone is not bad....honest opinion of the M35Z nighttime ability and with zoom lens in use. Thanks for your time.

    • @ScottJWaldron
      @ScottJWaldron  2 роки тому

      What you see in the video is the extent of what I did with it. My opinion regarding all cameras like this is that if you care about quality then save up money for an interchangeable lens camera with a large sensor inside and lenses to give you the reach you want (and be willing to carry a decent sized camera and lens). Nikon has their Z "mirrorless" mount cameras now. Look at something like the Nikon Z50 two lens kit. If you can use an F1 then you can use one of their new Z cameras with time and a willingness to learn.
