Back to the future was the biggest movie in 1985.. Then Somewhere in time came out in 86.. Back to the Future was a big smash hit at the time.. Then Maiden used some Blade Runner influence for the main idea.
Phenomenal for sure! Title track, Wasted Years, Stranger In A Strange Land, and Alexander The Great was some powerful stuff! Really had that classic '86 arena reverb production!
Somewhere in Time is definitely my favorite album with Bruce Dickenson. I’ve also really come to love the first two albums with Paul DiAnno, maybe the first one a little more so.

I "discovered" Iron Maiden in 1984 with their 'Powerslave' album so it'll always be #1 on my list. 'Somewhere in Time' and 'Piece of Mind' aren't far behind. They're my second favorite metal band behind only Sabbath.
Brave New World is my absolute favorite album. I just think all the songs have so much story and so many transporting musical elements that it just can’t be beat. Great videos tho!!

Glad to see someone who doesn't immediately bash No Prayer or Fear for being terrible albums. They weren't great, but not deserving the flak they normally get.
Well it came after the brilliant 7th son with its brilliant lyrics, phrasing and theme. Adrian left so a bit of maidens sound is missing. The production is not as good as the eighties albums imho. 7th son did well in Europe but thr Yanks never took to it so for me npfd was an attempt at re engaging with the American Market but for me it marks the end of maidens classic 80s period.

Also has the best B-side songs in any album) 2) Fear of The Dark (Man...This album takes you on a journey. Some songs like Childhood's End, Chains of Misery, Weekend Warrior are criminally underrated) 3) (This one is hard) Powerslave (An absolute classic in Aces high, 2 minutes... Some songs are really fun to play on guitar like Back in The village and also that galloping riff on Powerslave is a killer) 4) Seventh Son of A Seventh son ( Moonchild is the best album opener imo, also titletrack is instant classic) 5) Brave new World (Titletrack has one of the most complex guitar solos you could ever come up with. The Nomad is lowkey The Most Underrrated IM song) Other great albums : Killers, Number of the Beast Note: I never understood why Piece of Mind is such a fan favourite as i never really felt something special listening to that album. Sure The Trooper is a catchy song, but to me there are more less-known songs that i find a lot better.

Very cool you put Somewhere in Time as number one because it was never one of my favorites but it shows how Iron Maiden speaks differently to different people. I think the best is the Paul D'Anno stuff because of the gritty vocals and there was more diversity and creativity in the songs. Not a big fan of Fear and No Prayer.. but Powerslave, SSofaSS, Mind, and Beast are some of my favorite albums of all time. Now I'll have to go back and revisit Somewhere in Time because of this review.

That's a great ranking. Glad to see the 1st 2 albums get the respect they deserve. Killers is my favorite followed by Number of the Beast but your list is very similar to my tastes. Somewhere in Time is good but I can't see how anyone would have it ranked above the first 5 albums, no way. It does probably have the best cover art, although they are all great.
X-Factor has a special place in my heart; I kind of take it personally when people talk shit about the album. But I understand why it's not a favorite among most Maiden fans.
X-Factor is one of my favorite Maiden Albums, though i must say, i had my problems with it back when it was released, because as a kid it was a must bashing the new singer because only trve maiden is with Dickinson bla bla... well, many years later i started to fell in love and enjoy X-Factor as a part of Maiden. X-Factor is definitly a "grower" but if it hits you... Also it is the "darkest" Maiden Album which has an impact on me when i have also some not good mood moments.

My favorite Maiden album has to be Somewhere In Time as for me personally it was the most impactful and there was just something about the production quality that made that album so special which is why I wished Maiden would play more tracks from that album anytime they play a live gig.
I'm SO glad you put Piece of Mind above NOTB and Powerslave. I think Piece of mind is so underrated. At least compared to the albums before and after it. Every song on it is great if not amazing. And amazing playing and tone. Love your #1 pick as well :)

Extremely interesting #1. I didn't see that coming at all. I mean, obviously by the process of elimination I knew it was going to be in your top 3 but still, quite an intriguing pick for #1. I agree with %98 of what you said. Only thing of note is I personally would have moved A Matter of Life and Death up slightly, but anyway, great video!! Two thumbs up!!

Interesting list and probably a hard one to do. I love every one of those albums and I’ve been a fan since I was in HS when NOTB first came out. Some of your choices I agree with, including your #1. Somewhere in Time is incredible and the tour was phenomenal, my first of 14 times seeing them. Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner is my all time favorite Maiden song. It embodies everything that is the unique sound of Iron Maiden, especially the emotion. ROTAM is a very close 2nd and for all the same reasons. I was a little surprised that you didn’t have Brave New World higher though. It’s so good from start to finish and it’s a long double album, but seems shorter because it’s so intense.

Another good video Bryce , sucks they took other one down , I got hit with a copyright warning/ban on a Guns N’ Roses live video I posted , so I removed all the live videos I took of them sadly, hopefully this one doesn’t get taken down , heard music in the background but you seemed to talk over it most the way through , a few bands will go after you for anything , I had a friend lose her Facebook account and years of pictures she couldn’t get back after posting an eagles song , those guys come after you for anything you post of them with there music in it.
Never listened to somewhere in time so I think imma have to give it a listen after this. Glad to see piece of mind getting the love it deserves as well
Good list! You've given a lot of thought to this and came up with a unique list that I'm sure many IM fans disagree with (I'd change some stuff too) but your appreciation of their music is obvious! Somewhere in Time is basically my co-favorite album along with Seventh Son, followed by Piece of Mind, Number, Killers and Powerslave, then Iron Maiden. It's really tough to rank their first 7, especially when realizing that Brave New World, Dance of Death and A Matter are all excellent too. I've rarely seen No Prayer ranked that high but I can appreciate that, it's a good consistent album, although I feel Fear of the Dark has a couple better standout tracks (but a weaker album overall).
Brave New World is great! One of my favourite albums, and the one than brings Iron Maiden back to the top. I bought the Brave New World t-shirt just yesterday.
Mainly it’s just Di’Anno’s singing style at times reminding me of some of those 70s punk bands which I’m not a fan of... but he’s grown on me over the years and it doesn’t bother me too much at this point

Your top 4 is also my top 4, no surprise there I'm sure, but I have mine (right now anyway) at... #1: Piece Of Mind #2: Powerslave #3: Number Of The Beast #4: Somewhere In Time My top 2 could switch, and my #5 is prolly Killers. I'm an old school Maiden fan and when Somewhere In Time came out, I didn't really love it. I thought it was a little, I dunno, more "commercial" and maybe a lil meh, but it super grew on me.
My ranking from 1-11 is set but sometimes my 12-15 spot does change sometimes, after watching this video i was kind of tempted to rank The Final Frontier and No Prayer For The Dying higher on my list, It hurts me to rank it low on my list mainly because Bruce sounds like he's suffering and gasping for air on that album and there's some songs I don't care for and I only genuinely like six songs off of The Final Frontier but other than that it's a cool looking and sometimes sounding album. Saw them in 87 on the Somewhere In Time tour. You needed six eyes to watch that show. They had inflatable gadgets hanging from the ceiling of the Arena. Saw them a second time on 7th Son anniversary tour where they played the entire album, which is my favorite

Seventh Son is not underrated at all. Every other Maiden fan loves that album to death and many metalheads say that that was their last truly great record
I couldn't resist doing my own ranking. I've been a fan of Maiden for over 30 years now. They got me into metal! Personally, I love Final Frontier. If not for sentimental reasons, it would be my #1 album. I'm surprised you ranked Brave New World so low, but to each their own! I respect your list! One final note is that other than Virtual XI, I don't think there is a bad album here. I'm horribly biased, as Maiden is my #1. I do rank Bruce's solo albums - Accident of Birth and Chemical Wedding above the Maiden offerings. Just throwing that in there. For me it's between Killers and Somewhere in Time. I love the early punk laden feel of Killers and I love the synthesized Blad Runner inspired spirit of Somewhere in Time.
Time was the first Album I got back in the 80s and was hooked. So for me personally it is the number one. Masterpiece of an era that was a joy to experience.

Agree that Somewhere in time is #1, the production is still extremely good and to me maybe the best sounding metal album ever produced. The guitar stuff is so good, Smith and Murray playing solos that just fits the songs so well that you couldn't imagine those solos being played any other way.

Brave New World is my absolute favorite album. I just think all the songs have so much story and so many transporting musical elements that it just can’t be beat. Great videos tho!!

Somewhere in Time No Prayer for the Dying and Fear of the Dark is where they started to lose me, not bad albums but quite a drop off from the previous albums IMO.
Glad to see someone who doesn't immediately bash No Prayer or Fear for being terrible albums. They weren't great, but not deserving the flak they normally get.

Well it came after the brilliant 7th son with its brilliant lyrics, phrasing and theme. Adrian left so a bit of maidens sound is missing. The production is not as good as the eighties albums imho. 7th son did well in Europe but thr Yanks never took to it so for me npfd was an attempt at re engaging with the American Market but for me it marks the end of maidens classic 80s period.

1) Somewhere in time (1998 remastered) (Has the best guitar riffs and solos ever. Also has the best B-side songs in any album)
2) Fear of The Dark (Man...This album takes you on a journey. Some songs like Childhood's End, Chains of Misery, Weekend Warrior are criminally underrated)
3) (This one is hard) Powerslave (An absolute classic in Aces high, 2 minutes... Some songs are really fun to play on guitar like Back in The village and also that galloping riff on Powerslave is a killer)
4) Seventh Son of A Seventh son ( Moonchild is the best album opener imo, also titletrack is instant classic)
5) Brave new World (Titletrack has one of the most complex guitar solos you could ever come up with. The Nomad is lowkey The Most Underrrated IM song)

Very cool you put Somewhere in Time as number one because it was never one of my favorites but it shows how Iron Maiden speaks differently to different people. I think the best is the Paul D'Anno stuff because of the gritty vocals and there was more diversity and creativity in the songs. Not a big fan of Fear and No Prayer.. but Powerslave, SSofaSS, Mind, and Beast are some of my favorite albums of all time. Now I'll have to go back and revisit Somewhere in Time because of this review.
Steve Harris said on that Metal Show A matter of life and death was among their best work and has been overlooked..I completely agree !

That's a great ranking. Glad to see the 1st 2 albums get the respect they deserve. Killers is my favorite followed by Number of the Beast but your list is very similar to my tastes. Somewhere in Time is good but I can't see how anyone would have it ranked above the first 5 albums, no way. It does probably have the best cover art, although they are all great.

X-Factor is one of my favorite Maiden Albums, though i must say, i had my problems with it back when it was released, because as a kid it was a must bashing the new singer because only trve maiden is with Dickinson bla bla... well, many years later i started to fell in love and enjoy X-Factor as a part of Maiden. X-Factor is definitly a "grower" but if it hits you... Also it is the "darkest" Maiden Album which has an impact on me when i have also some not good mood moments.

My top 5 or 6 can be interchangeable most days. Depends on my mood. Incredible band with so many great albums. Every album has something enjoyable even if the album as a whole is not the best. Love em!!
My favorite Maiden album has to be Somewhere In Time as for me personally it was the most impactful and there was just something about the production quality that made that album so special which is why I wished Maiden would play more tracks from that album anytime they play a live gig.

Interesting list and probably a hard one to do. I love every one of those albums and I’ve been a fan since I was in HS when NOTB first came out. Some of your choices I agree with, including your #1. Somewhere in Time is incredible and the tour was phenomenal, my first of 14 times seeing them. Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner is my all time favorite Maiden song. It embodies everything that is the unique sound of Iron Maiden, especially the emotion. ROTAM is a very close 2nd and for all the same reasons. I was a little surprised that you didn’t have Brave New World higher though. It’s so good from start to finish and it’s a long double album, but seems shorter because it’s so intense.

Another good video Bryce , sucks they took other one down , I got hit with a copyright warning/ban on a Guns N’ Roses live video I posted , so I removed all the live videos I took of them sadly, hopefully this one doesn’t get taken down , heard music in the background but you seemed to talk over it most the way through , a few bands will go after you for anything , I had a friend lose her Facebook account and years of pictures she couldn’t get back after posting an eagles song , those guys come after you for anything you post of them with there music in it.

The Final Frontier has grown on me. Some really good songs on that album. The Talisman is a really underrated song in my opinion.

Good list! You've given a lot of thought to this and came up with a unique list that I'm sure many IM fans disagree with (I'd change some stuff too) but your appreciation of their music is obvious!
Somewhere in Time is basically my co-favorite album along with Seventh Son, followed by Piece of Mind, Number, Killers and Powerslave, then Iron Maiden. It's really tough to rank their first 7, especially when realizing that Brave New World, Dance of Death and A Matter are all excellent too. I've rarely seen No Prayer ranked that high but I can appreciate that, it's a good consistent album, although I feel Fear of the Dark has a couple better standout tracks (but a weaker album overall).
Brave New World is great! One of my favourite albums, and the one than brings Iron Maiden back to the top. I bought the Brave New World t-shirt just yesterday.

Mainly it’s just Di’Anno’s singing style at times reminding me of some of those 70s punk bands which I’m not a fan of... but he’s grown on me over the years and it doesn’t bother me too much at this point

Interesting list...certainly a far cry from most Maiden fans. I personally LOVE that 'A Matter Of Life And Death' finally broke into the Top 10 on someone's list! (probably in my Top 5 in their discography). It was, however surprising to see 'Somewhere In Time' eclipse your #2 and #3 choices as well as how low you ranked 2000's 'Brave New World.'

I'm an old school Maiden fan and when Somewhere In Time came out, I didn't really love it. I thought it was a little, I dunno, more "commercial" and maybe a lil meh, but it super grew on me.
My ranking from 1-11 is set but sometimes my 12-15 spot does change sometimes, after watching this video i was kind of tempted to rank The Final Frontier and No Prayer For The Dying higher on my list, It hurts me to rank it low on my list mainly because Bruce sounds like he's suffering and gasping for air on that album and there's some songs I don't care for and I only genuinely like six songs off of The Final Frontier but other than that it's a cool looking and sometimes sounding album.

Personally, I love Final Frontier. If not for sentimental reasons, it would be my #1 album. I'm surprised you ranked Brave New World so low, but to each their own! I respect your list! One final note is that other than Virtual XI, I don't think there is a bad album here. I'm horribly biased, as Maiden is my #1. I do rank Bruce's solo albums - Accident of Birth and Chemical Wedding above the Maiden offerings. Just throwing that in there.

For me it's between Killers and Somewhere in Time. I love the early punk laden feel of Killers and I love the synthesized Blad Runner inspired spirit of Somewhere in Time.
Time was the first Album I got back in the 80s and was hooked. So for me personally it is the number one. Masterpiece of an era that was a joy to experience.

Agree that Somewhere in time is #1, the production is still extremely good and to me maybe the best sounding metal album ever produced. The guitar stuff is so good, Smith and Murray playing solos that just fits the songs so well that you couldn't imagine those solos being played any other way.
