We live in southeastern Illinois on a 41 acre homestead. We just finished building our log cabin in 2018. Now we are focused on trying to grow our own food and raise livestock. Follow us on our journey we continue to develop our homestead and farm, while becoming more self sufficient.

Please do not split the channel. As a true, long ago fan of the channel, the variety and long term goals of self-sufficiency for your farm is why I have watched. Keep it up and show what you enjoy.
Agreed
Totally agree
Evan, I'm 100% for more solar content. That's how I discovered your channel. I'm putting in a solar array this summer, and greatly appreciate the information you and other channels provide. I came for the solar, and stayed for the entertaining adventures of daily life on the homestead. Keep the videos coming!
I don’t understand why one would not respect your desire to be completely independent of the grid. I enjoy, and have done so since the beginning, your channel. It is the best on YT in my opinion for telling it like it is. You may make some errors but you are not afraid to show those too. I really respect you and Rebecca for the way you take care of your animals, the land and each other. It would be easy to be jealous! Thank you for sharing all of your journey and content that you do. You have a beautiful farmstead!
I've actually ran into people that seem to believe that those with home solar must be (greedy people) as they do not want ot pay for electricity regardless to the fact they paid for all the equipment. I believe its just the world we live in today.
@@Bowhunters6go8xz6x It isn't greed at all. It is a long term investment. I have over $50,000.oo dollars invested in my system. My children will benefit from my system more than I will. And Yes I would do it again.
I like the single channel talking about all aspects of the farm. Keep it all together please.
I enjoy your whole story. If people do not like it, then they do not have to watch.
Keep the channel the same I like it the way it is. Thanks.
This is Your Channel! Do what you are passionate about if you don't want to burn out.
I just wanted to let you know, I love your channel. Maya is a star. I loved when you was putting in the fence and she was getting in the way!😂 And another thing. You make mistakes and not afraid of showing them. You have an honest channel. Thank you for that.
I don't understand why people would be negative to understanding how solar impacts your farming? It's the future. Please continue sharing it with us.
I appreciate every one of your videos, Evan.
Keep the solar in Evan, it's integral to your farm/homestead and that's what we want to see is your developments as they happen.
If you put drain tile underground around the barn and you put rain gutter and downspouts on it would solve a lot of your water problems.
I enjoy the solar content. No need for a separate channel.
I enjoy the solar content. It's how I found your channel and I have stuck with it ever since. Not sure I'd regularly watch a channel only focused on solar, personally I like the way you mix it in with the rest of the content, but I'd certainly give it a chance.
I appreciate the channel, thank you!
Please keep us updated on your desire to be independent and self-sufficient. I enjoy this type of content. I admire your willingness to share your journey to independence.
Evan you make whatever content you want. This is your channel.
I think you just need to keep it all together. I enjoy it all.
If you like it, I like it! I’ll never have solar panels, but I enjoy watching you prepare for your future!
You should get some barn lime to put down before rebedding…great for animal health!
Thanks for showing us how to make the soil blocks. My ex girlfriend had similar issues with water seeping into the barn. She had a French drain or tile system put around the barn and that solved the issue. Might be worth investigating something similar.
We love our Clyde’s planting guide. Everyone that gardens should have one
I bought one on Evan’s recommendation!
WE can only encourage you to fix the gutters, grading and drainage around the barns. you have spent a lot more time fixing the results of the water damage than it would take to address the root causes. You are very smart Evan. Keep up the good work! Thanks for sharing.
To dig up the barn perimeter and install French drains, install gutters and drains. The livestock need to move somewhere else. So I am working to create a new pasture, that will have plently of grass for all the animals. Then I can move the livestock over there, and work freely on the barn. but the pasture needs to be done first.
@@CountryViewAcres Thanks for the reply. It seems you have the situation well in hand.
Up north they just add more straw or hay until spring time and let it build up. I don't keep and cattle inside, although they sometimes have access to the barn depending on the weather. I don't have that challenge.
Wish I had a little slice of Rebekah’s dessert.
Evan, keep all the solar included just in the one channel. Just like you do with the all the tractor restoration, gardening, firewood, building the shop, and the mushroom hunts. It’s your channel and you can share it how you like. Either way you decide to post up the videos, I will be happy for them.
before you rebed the barn you should get some bags of lime and use a spreader and put some down before the beding helps with smell and kills bad bacteria
A channel dedicated to solar would be good for some, me personally, I prefer the every day tasks to maintain your homestead. Just love your honest, down to earth approach, warts and all. Very enjoyable. Wish you well whichever way you go. All the best.👍
God bless you all and thank you for sharing this video it was great mate.
Anyone who talks trash about your taste in solar just doesn't understand facts. Keep doing solar.... I love it too
It’s very interesting to fallow your solar projects, it will be very beneficial for you as well as for the environment.
I think your “geeking out” on Solar is fascinating.
Good Luck with getting a Solar Channel started…
No new channel. Just post what you want. If people don’t like it then they don’t have to watch. You make the titles very clear so there’s no excuses for trolls to be mad.
Your goals and progress are our goals! Thanks for making videos! They give us inspiration on our hobby farm
I’d subscribe to the Solar channel in a heartbeat. It’s an interesting area and becoming more relevant by the day for the future.
I enjoy anything you guys want to talk about on this channel but if you start another one I'll watch it too! You guys are enjoyable to watch.
I enjoy watching and learning about the solar installation and how it all works. I would keep it on this channel. I enjoy your videos and seeing what you have done with your beautiful farm. I really enjoy the building and repairing of projects. How is the rebuild of the tractor coming along.
Finally, make those drains in the barns, after all, they will have to be redone someday anyway, because you will never get out of the swamp
I am a passenger on this channel. You drive!
I enjoy your channel for all content. Watching how you are building the farm to be self sufficient also includes getting off the grid, and your tutorials (as I call them) have provided so much info to me in an easy to understand manner. If I have a say I would tell you to keep everything you do in one easy to follow show. Keep up the great work.
Keep the videos the same I like it all and enjoy watching you get back to the roots
We enjoy the solar videos and talked about it at the farm and machinery show. Not sure why someone wouldn't . We would love to do solar on our farm
I really enjoy the solar content...
I agree with others on not splitting your channel up. Keep doing exactly what you have been in showing all aspects of building your homestead. That is what the channel has always been about, after all it started out building a house with no livestock, etc. and that drew me in from the construction trades side which is relevant to my interests. I have watched every minute of your content from the beginning. I don't have the ability to raise larger livestock on the property at the moment but would if it was a viable option and enjoy that aspect of your videos. Poultry is the only option currently. All the other content around the property will still be there for the people that might not be interested in the solar part of the homestead and if someone is not interested in a portion of the video it is easy enough to skip around to the parts someone finds interesting. And what might not be relevant to someone's current interest might become a curiosity or important to them in the future.
Beautiful Day here in California. I hope one day you fix that barn drain, Concrete saw and jack hammer work, and some plumbing work. Then a hose to rinse down the barn into the drain. Wow!
I enjoy the solar content. If someone doesn't appreciate it, it's easy to fast forward, or just skip that video.
The solar content is amazing! So relevant to your goal to be self sufficient.
I hope you do show your new solar build as it's something that I enjoy. You are a doing a fantastic job towards totally being able to provide your own power and food very impressive. Well done and keep up the great content. Dave UK 🇬🇧
Hey Evan I don't usually comment on a lot of your videos but I do enjoy & watch em even going back to the earlier videos that I missed 👍🏻... Don't know if anyone has suggested to you but after you remove the wet hay/poop you might want to put some lime down to kill any bacteria that was left behind.... It will help your livestock from getting sick ....take care & make videos you want to put out you cannot make everyone happy so just be yourself....
We usually do that but we are out of barn lime.
Oh my…we’ve had enough rain 🌧️
Geek away! It's all part of the journey.
Thanks Evan and Rebekah! Keep doing what you’re doing!
I think you will find the soil blocks to be an economical and highly effective way to do starts.
The sole downside I found was that after making thousands of them, all the sifting and squeezing had aggravated the arthritis in my hands and I had to give them up. I recommend limiting the number you make in one day, and then allow a rest day. Also, take some NSAIDs before each blocking session.
I have watched your change for years and it is one of my absolute favorites to watch! I would love a video of you getting geeky about the solar I find that really interesting!
Everything is looking so good ! Enjoy your evening !! I LOVE YOU GUYS !!! 🥰🥰
Glad to see more solar coming! With all that property you could be self sufficient very quickly. I found the key to the whole operation is not buying new panels but buying used at about 1/3 the cost. Can't wait to see what you do but it's funny, I thought there was still a lot of room on the barn roof! Stay safe and God Bless!
Yall need one of those walk behind skid steers to clean out your stables
The cost of the panels is going down because it’s being subsidized by this administration. Nothing is going down in price these days. And I completely understand your desire to make the homestead off grid especially with frequent power outages. Love the videos Evan!
Evan maybe it would be beneficial for your barn to dig out some drainage trenches around the sides that are problematic. I enjoy your content. Thanks.
Yes for the solar channel
We love the solar content! No need to make another channel.
cu from Barcelona
Evan, I think that making a separate channel for your solar is a great idea……. for the people that are interested in that sort of thing.
But, please don’t take anything away from this channel.
AND don’t take on too much so that you do harm to your marriage and health.
But, if you do decide to do it, you have my very best wishes for all the luck in the world !!
Sincerely,
Rod
U 2 R doing a great job!
You certainly have more ambition with the electrical process than I do. I think it's great that you can do all those things, my hat is off to you. Good luck on your endeavors I wish the best for you. Thanks and have a good evening!
I have more of an "electronics" background vs. "electrical". For most people, yes there is a difference. I like your solar content, and if you do decide to make another channel I would probably watch it as well. I tend to "geek out" on stuff like that as well.
As far as this channel, it is by far my favorite one on UA-cam though I am subscribed to some others. I like the way that you "keep it real" by showing some of your mistakes and showing how you go about doing things. I have learned a lot from watching what you do, and I certainly appreciate you sharing it with us.
My only regret is that I'm not as young as your are, nor as healthy. The barn clean-out that you showed in this video would have been an all day affair for me.
Those soil blocks look delicious.
Bravo to your Solar Power! We've done the same, and appreciate your journey.
Wow, Evan! You did quite a day’s work. I love your smile when you said you just got a phone call about a delivery. I am excited about your new channel.
Very nice job editing this video!
Evan, your knowledge about solar would be great as a side gig when you retire. If you wanted some source of income to cover the coast of feed etc. Thanks for always bringing us along no matter what the chore....it is what homesteading is. Enjoy your evening with friends. Have a Blessed day.
Please don’t split the channel. I am an old man, I don’t agree with everything you do. I still love to see your thoughts on the green energy scam. This is how the pioneers started in the early 1900’s. I still love watching your videos and your work ethic. Do what you think is right.
And the little bit I saw of the lake,it looks good
Evan, enjoyed your video. Hopefully things will dry out and you can move forward with our garden. Have a great rest of your weekend.
I am a retired lineman and I enjoy your solar projects. I am considering one myself😊
Get the drainage pipes in the barn done. Huge priority now instead of an excuse every year. It would save a lot of time. Love your channel and his real you are.
New Pasture comes first. Then I can move the animals over there and work on the barn. But I need pasture first.
We love your content. Don’t worry about the haters. If you wanna get super technical on a separate channel, go for it. I’ll watch that one too!
Moving wet hay is hard work, Done it many times,
I love the old Barn,it needs eaves trough and a lot of tiles and drain. I personally like your channel as it is. At the end of the day it's your decision.
Thanks Evan
Son, you need to put your plants about 1 below your lights.
That’s going to make your plants grow and not be tall and spindly.
Maybe when the Blackberries come in Rebecca can make a Blackberry cobbler.
I for one would just as soon you put the technical items right here all together. It would save you a lot of work producing the same info. just do it in smaller segments. I am an Amateur Radio op and also have an Electical/eclectronic. and farming background also. so it all fits for me!! thanks again for another great video. ECF
The dessert looks delicious! Can’t wait to see the solar build.
Saw weather channel where you might get bad storms.
Why would someone be interested in your channel but not be interested in making their own power via solar? Weird.
Love the solar content Evan, it's all part of the self sufficient journey. Please keep it up.
Thank you.
Yes please Evan you really need to cut through the barn floor and redo the drainage system. After piping out the barn have a huge french-drain system from the back wall at least halfway to the firing range. 5hat will keep the barn yard dry all year round. Having solar all 5he way across the roof is only smart it would just be wasted space if you didn't. Also I was wondering why you didn't move the household propane tank and put it by the garage propane tank so it wasn't in view. Great show 8ve been watching for yrs.
Well send some of that rain our way!! lol. Crazy how it so wet there and we are going into another dry year and I don’t think we are all that far from you over here in mid Missouri. Thx for sharing.
i like anything that you do keep up the good work!!
I like your content. Most of the ppl want all you have to offer. I agree with you keeping all the content together, but that's a business decision.
I also agree with fixing the barn's water issue.
Love your show
Great job love your videos thank you
Thx for sharing
Evan. I'd put gutters on the front side of your barn to try to funnel it away. It doesn't have to be fancy. You can get the sections they sell at Lowe's, Home Depot, or Menards and build your own gutter. It might not stop the water getting in the barn but I'm sure it would help. By the way, I don't mind the solar info. I've got an electronic background. I understand it. Dave in TX
Jesse Muller runs a channel and he is BIG into solar... but really he's into just about everything. He has a geothermal system using a pond he built, and the solar panels, and now he's building a shop which he's going to power with solar. He just built a trailer to mount solar panels onto and make them somewhat portable. He build solar arrays that track the sun as it moves across the sky. His channel is just his name... Jesse Muller. If you haven't seen it, it sounds like his content would be right up your alley.
I would get a large fan to dry out barn next time this happens.
I’m fine with the solar content. I’d love to have solar on my house but right now the math doesn’t work even though the cost of solar cells is going down. The cost of insulation is still berserk here in Maryland. Apparently they expect you to pay it all and get a huge tax break which is great if you’re still working, but I’m retired and the tax break doesn’t help me much.
Geek out on Solar please…very useful for a good amount of people! ✋
Moar solar!!! If another channel is what you need to make that happen, then another channel is what we need! :)
Yes I would like to learn more about solar , I have solar generators for storms in Florida and gas generators
If you want to split the channel or not I'd watch both. I'm also a hobby farmer and did my own grid tie solar so I love the content. IMHO there is somewhat of an unhealthy reluctantance to learning/using green tech because it's not viewed as something one can fix in their garage with a wrench. The silly part is once you understand it, it is much simpler than a machine. It so cheep right now it's really a no brainer if you have roof space or land.
Thankfully, you have the other barn now for the cows and sheep. I'm confident you will get the drainage problem fixed. It will take time and effort, but it will be worth it in the long run. Keep up the good work. Your animals will thank you. ❤
Great job
Just do as you do, we’ll watch
Happy to see your new manure pile. That’s how I have mine and it works very well. For once I’m actually ahead of you… garden seed
