We live in southeastern Illinois on a 41 acre homestead. We just finished building our log cabin in 2018. Now we are focused on trying to grow our own food and raise livestock. Follow us on our journey we continue to develop our homestead and farm, while becoming more self sufficient.

All that ash is pot ash. So is ur wood stove/furnace. As a kid I had to spread our ashes out on our yard. We always had nice grass.
Great on veg. gardens, if not spread too thick.
Not all of it. 1 to 10 percent potash.
I spread the wood stove ashes all over the gardens, yards, fruit trees and put a pile in the chicken pen for them to dust in too!
He needs to dump the fireplace ash in a location that won't start a fire.
Looking good. Nice video. Thanks 😊
Soil testing actually saves you money. You put the right amount , of the right mixture on your land
Evan the ash and burnt wood is another form of potash
Yes, but there is probably sharp pieces of metal in it.
do you still have that cool magnet you made? But I support not risking metal in the hooves. Magnet is good enough to trust with tires. edit:posted too soon! love the magnet
I use an old seed cleaner with some diy fine mesh screens to clean my compost and wood ash. Works great to get out any foreign material. Only paid about $75 at a local auction for the cleaner, and put in about $200 to repair the electric motor and build new screens. Just a modified old A.T. Ferrel Company “Clipper “ seed cleaner.
Good video, thanks for sharing.😊
Don’t forget to show us your updated list of things to do, with items crossed off! 🇨🇦❤️
Your farm is surely coming along fine looking better lots of hard work paying off.
You continue to have too much fun with all the hardware you have!~!!
I am glad you are. using. Crop science to manage your hay crop
Thanks for sharing. Always enjoy your videos.
Better take the leaf blower to the shop gutters before the spring rains. Another chore that's on everyones list that doesn't like to be done.
At my burn pile residue I built a Screening Jig and I filtered out all the large pieces and the left overs I spread across my Vegetable Garden...
Great job mate thanks again for sharing it and all the best to you and your family and your friends
👍👍👍👍👌Great work on many projects for continuous improvements on your land great teamwork and documentation.!!!
Adding ash can’t hurt anything! Good way to amend soil too! I think you are really going to enjoy having a larger pasture like that I assume you’ll be rotating animals so they don’t over graze any one part. I like that you did that in the smaller pasture next to the big barn. I think it’s all shaping up for a great 2024! Thank you for sharing. See you on the next one. This has been a crazy late winter, weather-wise.
Awesome work
Add to you garden soil. Looking good
Anything you do to help the land is great for the land. Keep up the great work.
By the way, thank you watching you have helped me want to record what i do on our 200 acres cattle farm. DKM Farms. So thank you so much
Stay at it. Looks like it’s coming together!
We at Aerial Advantage LLC would love to help with fungicide application! We are partnered with Bunker Hill. We use drones
The new acreage is looking so good. All your hard work is paying off.
Enjoyed your video Evan you have a great day.
You are living the dream Evan! You get to run some cool equipment and have plenty of projects going on.
Turned out nice Evan and Rebecca, glad you got the burn pile taken care of and the fertilizer spread as needed. Almost fencing time again, always enjoy watching you folks build fence, you do such a great job. Stay safe and keep up the good work around there. Fred.
Hi, Evan and Rebekah! This was a very interesting video. I enjoyed watching you repair the brush pile area.
Those fertilizer spreaders work pretty good. We've used them in the past. Great work keep it up
Wow those gutters need some cleaning out , love your videos
It's all looking good.
Since it's drying out, hit the back of the barn with your sub-soiler east and west down through the bottom pasture gates. Give the water a place to run. Till you get gutters.
Gutters first!
Hi Evan. It looked like the front end loader, was really taking a good bite of soil and moving it well. I think the added weight, from the ballast, really made a big difference. It has turned your already strong tractors, into real beasts. Can’t wait to to see how your largest tractor, performs on its next big job. Great video and keep them coming. You and your wife stay safe. 👍
It will be interesting to see how much better the grass does over the ash pile.
Great your channel for watching as alwasy. i waiting for next video..thanks...
Great job, looks awesome, really like the longer videos. 👍👍💖
I guess that will help for sure ! I LOVE YOU GUYS !!! 🥰 🥰
Getting the pH correct will make a big difference to grass growth. Great video. All the best 🇬🇧.
Nice spreading Evan. The burn pile looks good, glad you were able to run that magnet over the area afterwards.
Great video Evan
Nice work as usual!
P.S. Don't forget Rebekah's bookcase still needs 'doing', 😉
Fun project. Great job!
Add a heavy screen/expanded metal to the brush guard to both tractors. Easy Peasy. Protect the radiator and plastic grill.
You want to remember to have your three point arms up and out of the way so you don't run the risk of hitting the tongue on the spreader. John
I bet where you buried the ashes from the burn pile will be really green when the grass grows. Love your videos
Our family dog watches your videos with us. It is so cute!
Hi Evan - I would not tell the salvage yard "you can have it", most salvage yards pay good money for rusty old scrap metal including old fence wires and any old twisted metal fence posts you have and they will pay "by the lb" and they will have you weigh your trailer when full and after unloading. (may only be worth $20 or maybe $50 for that trailer load) but its "better than a stick in the eye" is an old saying. They will separate the types of metals and companies will buy it from the Salvage yard and melt it down to make new products so it has worth. Take care !
Hey Evvan, man, your screwups are the funniest, the best . maybe you should make deck on the roof for the view. It looks like you are a man who sleeps with a clear mind.!!! KEEP GOING BRO.❤
Could you put a marker at the end of each row, so you have something to head for? 😊
I watched a you tube where a young man used old tires as fencing between poles,
Beet juice doesn’t rust your rims you went the best way
Nice to see you augmenting your fields to develop better grazing.
I don’t understand why you didn’t just spread the ash throughout the field rather than burying?
Do to metal theft, burnt wiring is commonly a no go without a letter from a fire department official, saying yes there was a fire and its not metal theft.
.
We run a little b7100 kubota with liquid filled tires and a backhoe. Its able to handle about 700lbs that way.
It was mabe 250lbs at most before. Makes moving lumber around in a tight space quite easy.
We run a 1950s jd 440 crawler/loader, for the big logs. Or custom ordered beams, that are massive. Very few rubber tire machines can equal what it can pickup.
Now that covered up you should seed it so grass grows there for when you do this year so get some seed and have a good field to make into hay
The problem with your Stihl chain saw isn’t probably your battery, it’s most likely the switch. My Stihl blower had the same problem, shutting down after about a minute. It was the switch..
Thx for sharing
the liquid ballast is the best thing you can do for a small tractor i think, i even have it in my riding mower tires, make a huge difference mowing hills behind the house.
Thanks Guys
I'm probably the only dummy who didn't realize this, but now that you have beet juice in your tires, be sure you have the valve stems at the top before checking your tires for pressure. It makes a mess in a hurry. Don't ask how I know this
🤭
Good video Evan. Next time spread the ashes over the pastures. You’ll raise the pH as well as potash. You’re bringing up non topsoil
Make a dust bath for the chickens with some of the ash ,sand and diatomaceous earth .
Wouldn't that have been funny, when you dug a hole to put the ash in, you uncovered a pile of buried trash? 😜😜💕💕🎶🎶
Your gutters are full of leaves, hope they don't cause problems with the down spouts
JudithB I need to load a couple of freezers, a frig and a dryer, along with the smaller appliances that quit in the last 3 yrs. I hope the scrap yard takes it all!!!! Still nothing from the furnace guy, but I have located another one. So much to do in the spring time!! The chicks are 3 times the size when I got them 3 wks ago, and got seedlings to start planting in the hoop beds. Also found the Dinosaur Kale seeds that I want to try this year. Peaches and crabapple trees are in full bloom and the blackberries are sprouting. Worried about a frost since out frost date is April 16th. Weird weather for sure! I want to get the garden cleaned, beds repaired and still need to get soil test don this month, try to hold off on planting and fill the greenhouse up instead.
💖💖💖💖💖💖
If you get the rest of that lime spread and then some decent rain this Spring, i bet you'll easily double the amount of hay you put up last year. Probably won't need to lime again for two or three years. I just know those hay fields will go crazy!
Charcoal like that is a good natural de-wormer for cattle ... not sure about the sheep though..
Just thought I would mention it to you all...
Wood charcoal
Great video!
I had them put tube's in my tires, it's so the rims don't rust from the inside out
Ash is fertilizer.
It's going to help your hay stand this year with what your doing with the lime, potash and boron. The liquid ballast will help you immensely for counter weight on both tractors, I have methanol or calcium chloride in all but one of mine. Oh no, lost you chimney cap, well at least your wife seen it and you got it back on. The scrap yard should take your fencing wire, mine did, but you don't get anything out of it, it will help taking up the barrel of scrap bolts and metal. Good luck, I hope you have a blessed week.
Not that you need more jobs but I noticed when you went up on the shop roof that your gutters are filed and need to be cleaned. It looks like you have a nice farm and I enjoy watching your Videos.
You could spread all that ash to the pasture and fields to.
thx
Need to clean your rain gutters out on your shed before it starts raining a lot you should look at putting leafguard kind of a system on your shed gutters keep the leaves out
Last fall, i took field fence to scrap yard. They refused all wire fence, claiming their new multi million dollar bailer allowed fence to become imbedded in bottom edges & labor to remove + damage was too great. Also, they had a new, long list of items not accepted. So good luck at your scrap yard.
My local scrap yard also will not take field fence , barb wire nor chain link fence as they claim it can jam up the shredder as well.
The ash good for garden n land Evan
👏👏
Looking good. Are you going to sow grass seed on the area? Blessings on you guys🙂
Did you consider putting windshield washer fluid in the tires? I've heard the beet juice can be a sticky mess. My local tire shop prefers the fluid over the juice. In the last couple of years i've been replacing the calcium in our tractor tires with washer fluid & have been happy with the result.
An orchard question- how far apart are your trees? Mine were supposed to be dwarfs- and recommended planting was 13 feet apart, turns out they are at LEAST semi- dwarfs, and should be more like 20 feet apart!! The tags lied!
Would it be practical to put stakes at the end of the field 40 feet apart until you get a feel for it?
I see that dinner for the rooster is on hold
He is behaving for the moment.
noticed all the leaves in your gutter when you went up on the roof
After a challenging day at work, it is good to know someone has making his day even more challenging than mine.
Ash is fertilizer, we used to spread the rice straw on the fields and burn it.
Yikes!! Now THAT'S A SPREADER!!!
There is a new product called Bio Blast that is supposed to be better than the beet juice. I saw it on Ask Tractor Mike
I couldn't get beet juice I had to use window washer fluid
👍
Check out liquid calcium from Agritec. Better bang for the buck than lime
I might have bush hogged the ashes to spread them out very fast.
Yes all that ash should be spread over the whole field ,not buried in one spot , that’s what potash is 🧐but yes I bet that one area will be the greenest than the rest of the field ,
That old fencing you are going to take to the scrapyard should be worth a little bit of money. I take scrap like that to Alter Scrap Metal Recycling in SW Minnesota & they will gladly take it. It may not be worth much but at least you can get rid of it.
And you expect him to drive from Illinois to SW Minnesota for maybe $20 from scrap? Evan is smarter then that.
Pete said that one the mistakes he made when he started was all the fencing. He said just use electric fence. It's cheaper and a lot easier to fix.
Pete doesn't keep sheep. Different animals need different fence.
Sheep and goats are escape artists. A little shock is nothing to them. Pete does have a 10 joule fencer though.
@@CountryViewAcres Forgot about that. He was referring to cattle. A whole different ball game.
Если это будет пастбище 12 акров то нужно вам купить больше бычков. Для имеющегося стада в настоящее время это сильно большое пастбище.
Have you checked on putting tractor GPS in the big tractor ?
Why not throw the ashes in the compost pile? Wood ash has nutrients.
They will pay you for it what ever it weighs they are open now hauled a load down on Saturday. scrap is about 120 a ton right now it went down a little at the beginning of the month. Who are you having fill your tires on the tractors I want to do that to one or both of my Kubota tractors
Will you have to add anything to keep your tires from freezing in the winter or do you have to drain them
Evan, what is your Dwalt series torque driver's name. I need one that does the job but isn't to big. Thanks in advance
Q: why did you burry it instead of land paining it and just pick up the rest?
